Help me choose a Macbook Pro

Hey everyone, I need some help in choosing which Macbook Pro is right for me.
Basically I'm wondering which of these 2 would be a better choice.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB471LL/A?mco=MTEzMjIzODU
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB471LL/A?mco=MTEzMjIzODU
What are the main differences?
4gb of ram should be sufficient and I doubt I would ever upgrade to 8gb.
as for graphics, I would mostly only need a mac that would allow me to play the latest Sims games. the first has a graphics memory of 512 and the second has 256.
Thanks in advance.

Now what do you guys think...?

  • I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like excel, word etc. 13"

I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like  microsoft office products ...excel, word etc.  I am new to the apple world and have liked the idea of the MAC Book Pro 13" but really dont know if this is good enough or if the computer will soon crash?
    13-inch: 2.6GHz
    with Retina display
    Specifications
    2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    512GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)2

That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.
Good luck in making your decision!!

  • Need help choosing a Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I want to buy a Macbook Pro, I just don't know which of the configurations is the best. I want to go for either the 13" 2.53 Ghz, or the 15" 2.53 Ghz. The only difference I see is the screen size, so is that alone worth it? I was also looking at the 2.66 15" with both GPUs...
I will be using the mac for some gaming (but not much -maybe 1 or 2 games), and mostly everyday use and college and work.
So what is the better configuration?
    Thanks

is it even a factor if you don't play any games?
Currently, the major two areas that stand to benefit from the "enhanced graphics" on the 2.66Ghz 15" model are 3D design and 3D games. Other computing tasks currently do not use the GPU as much as these two, and so do not stand to benefit as much.
However, with the release of Snow Leopard, the GPU will become more similar to a CPU, which will enable it to process general tasks. This will speed up the computer in general, depending on how fast a GPU the computer contains. What we don't know now is how much of a speed-up we can expect. When Snow Leopard is released in September we will know more for sure.
In general, it is usually advisable to buy as much computer as you can afford. The higher-spec you buy, the longer it should last you.
One more thing: There is no reason to wait to purchase until Snow Leopard comes out. Anyone who purchases a Mac between now and September (when it is released) will get a Snow Leopard upgrade for $10. The general upgrade price for any Leopard user is only $29 as well. Dirt cheap and well worth the extra couple months of computing you'd get out of a new machine as well.

  • Help with 2009 13inch MacBook Pro Hard Drive!!!

My hard drive recently died on me and I'm new to everything about hard drives. To replace my old hard drive, I purchased a Seagate Momentus Laptop 320GB 5400RPM 8MB Cache. Is this the right one to buy for basic usage?
Also, when I turn on my computer, there is a flashing folder with a question mark in it, this happened initially when my hard drive died. Is this happening because I need to install the installation CDs?
Please, any help would be great!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That hard drive should work on your MacBook Pro. A question mark appears when your MacBook doesn't find any bootable partition to start, so you can't use your MacBook. To fix it:
    1. Replace the hard disk, insert the OS X disc and press C key while your Mac is starting.
    2. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility, select your hard disk in the sidebar and go to Partition tab.
    3. Select Options and choose GUID Partition Table. Then, press OK, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Format, and select Apply.
    4. Install OS X. When the installation finishes, open  > Software Update and update to the latest version

  • Help me choose which Macbook is best?

    Hi All,
Trying to choose between the various Macbook Pro Retina's in terms of both size and performance, and hoping the community could help me out a little.  I like the portability of the 13, as I commute frequently and also will occasionally need to bring my laptop to client meetings as well.  However, I'll also be using it for personal use and am afraid I'll eventually desire more screen real estate.  So I'm torn between lugging around a larger/heavier laptop for possible future need or a small compact one that I may wish was bigger down the line.  Plus the performance I guess is different between the two.
As far as performance goes - not sure what is best, I can probably afford the upgrades, but just because I can doesn't mean I want to potentially waste money on performance enhancements that may not be noticeable or useful, that money may be better spent saving up to fix my car haha.  I will primarily be using it to surf the internet and write - though I am known to be a huge resource hog on PCs and will likely want the higher RAM.  I will also likely use this for photo editing with lightroom (I currently do this on my PC though so I can always use that in addition or instead of) and I'd like to watch T.V./Movies on occasion either at home or commuting/traveling.   I'm interested in finalcut but honestly have no idea if I'll even use it - maybe down the line for timelapse videos or something.   Anyway, I want to keep my options open for potential future needs without spending money for features I wont use.  I'd like to buy something that I would still be happy using a few years from now as well.
I know.  I'm probably difficult to help.  Thoughts?

Assuming you are planning on doing the power hungry work at home, for the price of a high-end 15" model you could get an 11" MacBook Air for commuting and a low-end 27" iMac which will still be more powerful than the MBP, for your screen real-estate and power needs.
By having two computers you will have what you really want both at home and when out. There is no need to forfeit part of the good experience in one area to enable you to use the same computer in another area.
You wanted the computers to be usable for at least a few years, using these two choices will be more likely to achieve this as typical MBA needs are not resource intensive, and iMacs tend to last a decent amount of time anyway. Spreading wear-and-tear across 2 machines will add to this as well. While a Retina MBP matches a lot of desktops in performance today, they tend to fall behind a lot faster and in a year or two you will find you can match its specs by buying a <$1000 desktop, and wish you had just opted for a more portable laptop instead.

  • Help Needed: Prepping a MacBook Pro for sale

I'm going to be selling my MacBook Pro 15", and I was wondering if there are any reference lists with steps to prepare the laptop, namely, how to:
    - remove my own files;
    - remove any identifying indications on any software;
    - generally making sure that all of "me" is no longer on this laptop.
I appreciate any help, and welcome any tips beyond the topics above.

    From Kappy:
    Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities (Installer menu if using Panther or Jaguar) menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

  • ICloud an illusion? Doesn't show up in help on my new Macbook Pro or in Pages. What's up?

I saw the ads about iCloud and wanted to use it for keeping track of one document on my iPad and my MacBook Pro. I spent hours downloading the latest versions of iTunes, IOS, for Mac and iPad but I don't see any mention of iCloud in Pages or in Help for Pages. I even tried iWork following an offer to sign up free but no dice on that either. Totally frustrated with this.

That's because the Mac version of Pages hasn't been updated for iCloud compatibility, only the iOS versions have.
Currently you have to manually upload and download Mac Pages documents at http://www.icloud.com/ for them to "sync" with the iOS version.

Try a Safe Boot to clear the dyld_shared_cache (dynamic loader cache)
    SafeBoot  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Safe Boot, which automatically rebuilds this cache (among other things).

  • MacBook Pro smell and need help deciding on which MacBook Pro to buy

So I bought a 17-inch MacBook Pro from my brother in August of 2009. He bought it in March of 2008. A couple days ago I noticed that my MacBook Pro has been releasing a really bad smell almost as if burning plastic. But the smell isn't that bad. What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro? I'm getting a New 15 or 13-inch MacBook Pro in June so idk if I should just not worry about it? And I need help deciding if I should get a high end 13-inch MacBook Pro or a low end 15-inch MacBook Pro?

What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro?
Take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check as to the cause of the smell.

  • Urgent I need help about Problem with macbook pro

The first sorry for my english,
I have a macbook pro buy it me almost one year ago, and these days me the mouse remains I want and cannot do anything have to wait a few seconds and it returns to work, and also when it puts in rest it touched all the keys and the trackpad but it does not answer, I have to close the screen and wait awhile to raise it and return to react, if someone can help me it be be to him very grateful, in addition the guarantee of hardware is ended in 8 days. thank you very much

Hi leptones, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'm not sure if your warranty expires in 8 more days or it already expired 8 days ago? If you're still under warranty, I would definitely call AppleCare or go to an Apple Store or AASP; they can troubleshoot it and determine if it's something that needs fixing while you're still under warranty (if you are).

  • Need help removing partition on macbook pro

    Hello
    I have a macbook pro 17" OSx 10.6.6
I have a partition that i am trying to remove. When I open up boot camp assistant and click continue then click i already have downloaded the windows support software to a cd dvd or external disk it tells me that the startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored toa single partition.
    I am stumped.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    -Luke

Have you tried to repartition the drive with Disk Utility to add a third partition or to remove the Boot Camp partition?
I would repair the hard drive to see if that helps:
    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
