Help me choose a quality, studio vocal mic

Hi everyone -
I'm still piecing together my home "mini" studio and am now ready to purchase a quality, studio vocal mic or two.
I'd like to keep the budget at $500 or less, including used. Should I purchase two vocal mics for home studio recording? I have a simple iMac and will probably purchase a Presonus Firebox soon (or Saffire).
I LOVE the way the SM58 sounds in a live setting but I want a mic that is made for the studio.
I'm also going to get an additional SM57 to record my acoustic guitar - 2 SM57s for an acoustic, what do you think? I've read that's the best setup...
Oh and what about the circular "shield" for the vocal mic? Sorry for the lack of terminology but I'm new to this . What brand of that would you recommend?

I'd like to keep the budget at $500 or less, including used.
I've been very happy with the Shure Condensor I use. I forget the exact model, but it's like this one:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--SHUBETA87A
Which is well within your budget.
Should I purchase two vocal mics for home studio recording?
I use a single mic for vocal and electric guitar recording. I generally use two on the acoustic (an SM57 and the condensor)
will probably purchase a Presonus Firebox soon (or Saffire).
You should be very happy with the FireBox. I use the FirePod and am extremely pleased with the quality. PResonus has a very good rep here, both for theeir equipment as well as their support.
Oh and what about the circular "shield" for the vocal mic?
A defuser, or simply "Pop Filter". I can't imagine any advantage of one brand over another. They are very simple devices, but very good to have.

  • Help with choosing Export quality CS4 souce sony handcam hybrid

I am having trouble getting a good quality once I export my sequence . I have tried different formats and none of them seem to be as good as the original source video.  I am using a sonyhandycam hybrid with the quality set at 9m HQ.  What would be a good project setting and a good formant and options to export for the best quality? I would like the best quality I can get for a DVD, I sometimes do some uploading to youtube so any tips on that would be good as well.  But my main focus is best quality for a DVD.
    Thank You!

Thank you for your advise but how can I get very good quality on DVD then.
as long as your project is <60min, iDVD will create best quality technically possible (=using the highest bit-rate, 9MBit/s) standards allow .
it is not a prob of the tool, but the standards. your source is 1920x1080, a DVD can contain only 720x480 ..
if you want 'higher' delivery-quality, consider BluRay (hmmm?) or a MediaPlayer (AppleTV, WD TV, PS3, .. )

  • Is it possible to add reverb to vocal mic, without affecting my keyboard sound?

    Hello,
I am trying to record my vocals and piano simultaneously. I'm using the MBox 2, with Adobe Audition 3.0. Whenever I add reverb to my vocal track (via the fx tab under my vocal track in multi track view), it affects the way my piano sounds while I am recording (it creates a delay on the sound of the keyboard while I am playing...almost like a 'bouncing note' delay). I really want to be able to hear some reverb on my voice while recording, but I cannot seem to figure out how to do it. This is how I have everything set up:
Piano is plugged in via DI on input 2 on the back of the mbox
vocal mic is plugged in via cannon on input 1 on back of mbox
If anybody could help, that would be wonderful. I've spent hours trying to figure this out with no luck. It is a lot more fun to record your singing with a bit of the pretty reverb....but my piano doesn't agree.
    Thank you
    Best,
    Jenny Jo

    Hello Brian,
Thanks for your help again. I have spent the last 6 hours running into nothing but problems. I tried your advice about recording mono in both separate tracks, and still no luck. I was using a condenser mic, and a keyboard. Both using mono, and I was using the studio reverb. I finally decided to try something simpler, just so I could at least feel a bit satisfied in getting a recording in. I set the condenser mic near my keyboard and speakers, and plugged my keyboard into the speakers. I armed the one mic track for record for phantom power, applied studio reverb, and set up the correct settings for the track by going into Audio Hardware Setup and selecting 'Asio Digidesign Driver' as the audio driver for everything. I simply wanted to play my piano, which would sound through the monitors next to me, and sing into the microphone..which would pick up my vocals with the piano in the background. The only way I could hear reverb on my voice during the recording, was by adjusting the 'mix' knob on the front of the mbox. It seemed to be working okay, and I thought I had found at least a compromise for the moment. But after saving the files, and upon listening to them...I noticed drops and rises/glitches/ in the recording volume. I then did a bunch of tests. I recorded some without any reverb assigned at all, did some recordings with the mix knob up and some with it off...I tried everything I could think of. I saved each one as a wav file, and MP3, just to see if that would affect the sound. Listening to them, they all have those same sound glitches. While doing the recordings, the sound disturbances weren't audible.
I am wondering if there is a setting that I need to fix...I am not the most savvy technical person, and am rather new to recording. Maybe the buffer size needs to be adjusted? I really have no idea...it is frustrating. I should say that I am using an MBox 2, which is supposed to be used with Pro Tools software. I had problems using Pro Tools as well, I don't think my OS is very compatible with it. Unfortunately, I have windows Vista, which I hear nothing but problems about in regards to recording. I prefer to use Adobe Audition, as I'm familiar with it, and like it.
Well, I hope this email hasn't put you to sleep. I really hope I can get this figured out, as I'm keen to record.
    Thank you again..
    Best,

Out of some disbelief I had to try my own setup suggestion from above, since it's not a thing I do daily anymore. Without wanting to go into any dispute with the above poster, I can only say:
    It works well here.
    Your mileage may vary.
Setting up two mono tracks with a separate input to each, I was able to record vocals with reverb from Audition in my monitoring headphones, along with recording an electro-acoustic instrument (guitar in my case) on the adjacent track with no reverb at all. I sang/tested with lots of consonants and different monitor levels and reverbs; I used the Studio Reverb, which is the least CPU intensive and recommended in the manual. There was no noticable delay, echo, what have you, which I felt disturbed my precision at all. Now I KNOW technically there is a delay/latency, but for practical purposes it isn't noticable. I've also heard some singers are extremely pecky on this, and for them there is the solution of direct monitoring and an outboard reverb added to their headphone signal. For everyone else however it works well and the latency just a theory - certainly not an audible 'echo' of any kind. With a poor soundcard and a computer low on resources latency will become evident. Also if you don't use ASIO. This type of application is why we have ASIO.

  • I've exported my pages graphics document as a PDF file and can't seem to reduce the file size without compromising the quality of the photo's used even after choosing "best" quality.  I'm trying to send the file via e-mail but it's too big.  ??????

I am trying to e-mail a graphics pages document I made as a PDF file.  After trying to resize the file, the photo's quality is compromised (really blurry) even after choosing "Best" quality.  What am I doing wrong.  As a regular full sized file (PDF) it's fine, but when it gets reduced, it's bad and it needs to get printed from the e-mail copy I'm trying to send.  HELP! Please.

If there are a lot and/or large images the file will inevitably be large, no matter what.
You can reduce them down as far as possible by cropping and scaling them to the final size before creating the pdf. You can do this by opening the images in Preview .app and using Menu > Tools to reduce the resolution and to crop.
If you have used transparency effects eg shadow, reflection, transparency, 3D charts, OSX will by default render these at 72dpi in the pdf.

  • What gear do I need?  (to record vocal mic and iPod)

    HELP
I have a powerbook and I am running a vocal mic and an iPod with some karaoke tracks on it through a Yamaha Stage Pass system and I want to record into garageband, then import it to iTunes and email the mp3 files to some friends and family.
what gear will I need to be able to keep my setup the same (it has an RCA port for a recording device) and just run it straight to my powerbook and garageband?????
    thanks!

    Hi tooch,
    welcome to the forum!!
If you have a line out on your yamaha, then all you need is a cable to plug into the macs's line-in.
if it has seperate 1/4'' left and right outs, you'll need to get a "y" cable that has two mono 1/4'' TS plugs into a stereo 1/8'' TRS plug. Radioshack has them.
    Good luck tooch!!

  • Looking for a great semi-pro vocal mic

    hey-
I'm looking for an excellent semi-pro vocal mic. willing to spend up to $600-700. Right now I've got my eye on the SE Electronics Z3300A, which looks to be an excellent choice, but i'm open to suggestions.
I'm not particularly looking for personal favorites... I'm looking for tried and true industry vocal mics that deliver under any situation, and always produce excellent tone, good warmth and presence without being too abrasive.
    thanks!
    chris

If you can pump your budget up just a smidge, the AKG 414 is an industry standard condensor mic that sounds great on just about everything, including vocals. It has a very clear vivid sound, and you'll find it takes care of lots of condensor mic needs really well. I've seen it in most studios, it also sounds great as a room mic, distant amp mic, even nice as a kick mic
It doesn't have the warmth and character of more expensive vocal mics, like Neumanns, but cheaper-priced condensors sometimes have too much dark character for me. This would keep your tracks more on the clear and pro side.
    Zzounds sells it for $900.
Don't know where you live, but in NYC B&H Photo Video used to have a room where you could test out microphones. Really best to get your mouth in front of a bunch of options to find the right one.

  • Connecting a Vocal Mic to a MacBook Pro for garageBand use?

I do a lot of singing and play the guitar and i just got my new mac. Still kind of clueless but it seems like garage band can be a pretty useful recording program sooo i think ill give it a try. But, for anyone who knows what like a livewire advantage standard EXM series microphone cable looks like... there is most certainly no jacks for it on the macbook lol. Just wondering is there any kind of adapter i can buy that will allow me to record with a good vocal mic in garage band rather than the quality lacking built in mic lol.
    Please and thankk youuu!!!

    "quality"isn't really the issue.

It's the level of compression. Lower number, more aggressive compression, more visual artifacts.
Aside from that you should never use jpeg as a working format. The compression is destructive and cumulative, and the file deteriorates every time you resave it.
Use TIFF or PSD, and if you need jpeg save out a copy as a single final step.

    What are the main differences?
4gb of ram should be sufficient and I doubt I would ever upgrade to 8gb.
as for graphics, I would mostly only need a mac that would allow me to play the latest Sims games. the first has a graphics memory of 512 and the second has 256.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Help me choose a 865PE board

    Hi,
I need some help in choosing the best(most feature packed, fast etc.) MSI 865PE motherboard.
There are two boards that are pretty identical and trying to find the difference between them has been difficult. They are the Neo2-FIS2R and Neo2-PFISR.
Which one of these two should I buy? They cost about the same. What are the major differences between them?
    Please help me in choosing.
    Thanks!

The faster Prescott's are no longer shown, so maybe they are being re-spec'd again.
Great, I did see this link earlier but I'm confused by several things and please excuse my ignorance but I have been out of the Hardware scene for 4-5 months which is a long time in hight tech.
First thing on this table that I see on the P version is "P4EE Support" what is this? and why does the first table not support it?
On the first table it had a column "PCB Ver." what is this and where can it be found on my computer or Mobo?
So from looking at this link then I can safely say that I can buy a prescott CPU and it will run fine on my neo2 FIS2R?
faster Prescott's, so are there variations in the CPU and will my board be able to handle the faster ones?
Sorry about all the questions but if I can get answers to these then it would be extremely helpful.

    UPDATED:
I do find these two tables very confusing and there is little explanation, To me the first table is saying that all the boards only support P4's and not prescott? the second table is saying that only the Extreme Edition supports prescott?
but the second table also lists the FIS2R etc so its all very confusing????

  • Help With Choosing The Technology

    Hello,
I need help in choosing the appropriate technology for the application that I'm going to be creating.
The characteristics of the system that have been decided until now:
Standalone app built on either Flex/Flash/AIR
Restricted to using the system on a single computer, hence can be a tightly coupled system
The server component of the system needs to be closed source and robust, for which im thinking something like a Java backend, etc, etc.
In a completely new environment, all that i need to be able to do is install just the AIR application and not worry about installing extra stuff for the server support.
Thanks In Advance for anyone who can help me out with this.

If you are saying you want the server component to be on the same machine as the Flex app, then your choices are severely limited due to the sandbox, unless of course you are using AIR, then you can just use the SQLite database.
But if there will be a sevrer component on another machine on the web, you could use BlazeDS, and like I said, its free and very robust.

  • Please help. How can i get my mic to work??

    + Hi all
I have a creative inspire 5. 5700 hooked up to my X-FI extreme music via Digital I/O port.
However im a bit pissed off because i cant get a microphone to work, it seems that the port i use my speakers for is the same port as the microphone..
Any ideas how to get my mic to work without unplugging the digital I/O?
    Cheers

/Re: Please help. How can i get my mic to work? The only solution that I can think of is to get the?X-Fi I/O Dri've. Unfortunately, Creative does not sell this anymore on their store. You can buy it online, though most places I find it at, it is refurbished.
This is what it looks like: http://us.creative.com/products/prod...5&product=4659#
The other alternati've is the X-Fi I/O Console. This, however is rather expensi've (I think it is anyways).

Unfortunately those are the only ways I know of. The X-Fi Xtreme Music does not hook into normal front panel solutions.

I'm trying to create a relatively short slideshow with high resolution images (~3MB) and a couple of short video clips.
iMovie 6.0.3 ruins my pictures. They're blurry and pixelated. Is there a new version of iMovie that can help me import high quality pictures?

avoid using iMovieHD6, which is mainly meant to deliver content to TV = low res, low color profile, low framerate, interlacing..
use any specialized tool as PhotoMagico or Photo2movie..
you can slightly improve slideshow's quality, by setting up a HiDef project (720p/1080i), export as h264 and set the QTplayer app to 'high' ..
aside: the Preview in iM shows a reduced quality of projects .. never judge pic quality of iM on a computer..
and, don't hesitate to make use of the forum's Search feature.. we have approx. 5000 threads concerning pic quality..
