Help me choose the right black for a background (white text on black BG)!

Hi all!
I am polishing an InDesign document for a magazine. The cover will contain a big black surface with white texts on top (alongside a white surface with black texts/graphics on top and there is also a color bar on top of the black surface.)
I was warned that standard black will not work for the black background and I was advised to produce a 'cyan black' or a '4 colour black' instead.
The cover of the magazine will most likely be like a book cover: fairly thick white cardboard/paper with a coated job.
What exact color choice would you recommend knowing that the text color will be 'paper white'.
I now have this Pantone Black C (from the Pantone solid coated library): would it be good for this job? And what about the other black text and graphic elements on the white surface? Should they be from the same black?
I was hoping for the most straight forward and saff answere to this question as soon as  possible.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Best.
Nic

I agree with Bob.
Generally, I do ask the printer. But usually I set up a rich black with 50% cyan and 100% black.
Adding more than Cyan to the Black can cause misregisteration issues, usually I stick to a 2 colour build for the Rich Black when knocking out White Text.
If your printer suggests differently then use what they have asked.
A few general rules of thumb:
Don't use thin serif fonts below 10pt - as the serifs have a chance of filling in.
Use a slightly bolder version of the font if one is available.
Increase the kerning slightly.
Point size and and typeface is key to setting reversed out type. A font with thick hairlines will not break up as easily as one with thin hairlines. Italics tend to be problematic as in they can break up more easily than roman faces. Increasing the kerning here is vital as it prevents letters from joining up unintentionally.
When talking with the printers - let them know what type size and what font you're planning to use and if it will cause any issues with the print quality.

  • Help with choosing the right specifications for a Macbook Pro Retina?

    Opinions needed....
So I'm new to Macs, but I know what I want to achieve and I feel this is the right route to choose. I'm looking at delving into the world of music production, using Logic pro 9 and garageband, but I also enjoy watching High definition Movies and televison so I know that the Retina display is definatley the right choice for me. However, I'm unsure on the amount of RAM & Which processer I should choose. I have read a fair bit on forums and online about the new retina macbooks being 'locked' from upgrading, so the 16GB of RAM is an immediate choice for logetivity.
The choice of processor is when I start to become clouded in my choice. As forementioned, I'm looking at running logic pro, as well as high def movies. There is also a possibilty at looking into photo and video editing, Whether that be in final cut pro or photoshop... But I want to leave my options open.
I think the choice of 16GB of RAM, 2.6Ghz processor, with a 256GB hard drive ( as i have 1.5TB external space) would be a good choice. Once I've added on applecare that comes out at around £2350, Which is a significant investment, but one that I think will help me immensely for the future. I am interested in other peoples opinions on my possible choice because, as I said before, I'm new to the world of Macs and making the right choice is essential. As a side note, the choice of upgrades also ensures a reasonable resale value, which is a bonus.
    Regards

Both power adapter I have are different (at the magnet end) from the one in link.
Earlier adapters have T shaped connectors, which Apple later changed to the L shape, presumably to make them more abuse-proof. Either one is fine and the one you are using will not damage your Mac.
Retina MBPs and new MBAs use a completely different MagSafe 2 connector which will not fit (without an adapter).

  • Help - Final Cut the right option for making self-playing presentations

    Hi There,
I'm been in a horrible place trying to export a presentation made in Keynote 2 into Quicktime. This presentation has audio embedded in the presentaion (not as an object on the slide) and also has quicktime movies on the slides. The movies have vector images building in and out that is supposed to follow along with the audio and video.
The long and the short of it is, it doesn't work for what I want it to do.
    Keynote can't:
    A) set any timings that are accurate in any way
(i need to have visualks sincing with an audio narration)
    B) can't export either at all at times or with any accuracy to QT.
I need to be able to make QTs so they can be:
    A) made into steaming files that would be available online
    B) input into a DVD so they can viewed on a television.
I know I attempted a cheat by trying to go about this through Keynote and it has failed. Now I have to figure out what will work, learn the app and rebuild the keynote files in the right program.
Is final cut what I want? is express enough? Is there a presentation sofware out there that works? I was also told motion may be necessary? I know there is a strong possiblilty I was using the wrong piece of software for what I want to accomplish. I am will be willing to make the investment if I know it will be succesfull.
I'm really at a loss and need advice to assist in making the right decisions to move foward. Help! and Thank You.

All these applications will take some time learning to use effectively. I'd suggest you spend the time learning them before you tackle a project in earnest.
The full version is a bit more complex to learn because there are many more settings and options, which aren't available in FCE, and which may make it more daunting. The applications themselves behave very similarly, and anything you learn in FCE will apply to FCP.
I'm an Apple certified Final Cut and Motion trainer. Is Motion overkill? Can't answer that for you. It is very easy to use and to get going and be productive. It also comes with excellent templates. If you get Studio you get LiveType as well, and all the applications integrate easily, LiveType to Motion to FCP and any combination of that. I like LT a lot, but Motion is fun to use too, very dynamic in what you can create in real-time on the fly. It does require horsepower though, lots of RAM and a fast graphics card. You might find it a bit bogged down on a PowerBook as the project gets more complex. Motion is really designed for short pieces, motion graphics elements, opening titles, interstitials, not for doing whole programs.

  • Choosing the right technologies for a FEM simulation visualization

    Hello,
I have been a Flash dev for over a year now, developing games for kids in pure AS3. I have recently started thinking about my Bachelor's Degree project and I decided to use what I know and develop as a developer - and I chose Flash to be my ground technology for this.
The subject of my project is to visualize a finite-element method simulation (FSI - which is simulation for both fluids and solid objects) of 2D (3D for Master's) flow through the aortic valve in heart. What I have to do, basically, is use some FEM application (I chose an archaic Adina) to generate data about the mesh (FEM nodes and elements) and then use it to visualize the whole thing. I was thinking about parsing the output *.dat files and put it to XMLs or just putting it manually in a database so I wouldn't have to deal with file access. Either way is fine, I guess.
Now, my question is - what do I use to optimize this?
Remember, I'm totally new to Flex, I've made only a couple AIR apps.
One of the questions is - use FlashDevelop, which I have been using ever since I started programming in AS3, or switch to FlashBuilder? I definately want to use Flex to create the interface, Flash of course to visualize the whole thing and the problem is I can't get a grip on the overall image. Should I use AIR to build desktop app, or keep it web app, what's the best option for me as a Flex beginner, which will have better performance (as the problem itself is quite complicated) and generally what do you usually use for things like this.
I was trying not to sound too desperate, but I don't really have any gurus around to ask questions like that - I hope you can help.
Thanks for all the input in advance!

  • Help with choosing the right hardware

    Hello,
I would like to know what hardware sollutions from NI are best suited for my Master's degree project, which is a motorized crane for a video camera (basically a robotic arm with 5 axes). What I need is something to control my 5 motors (DC/stepper) - both in position and velocity and also need some Digital inputs available for different sensors. In my previous project, I have succesfully built a motorized slider for camera (only 3 axes - 2 rcservo for pan/tilt and a DC motor for translation which was controlled in position) and I used Arduino development board to control it, encountering difficulties for controlling my entire system. In this upgraded version of the crane, I thought that NI hardware are more reliable, and I want to find something to match my application requirements. I just need something to control my motors using Labview, as I will make my own drivers for them (also something affordable for a student as the motion control modules are way out my bugdet).
On the other hand, I would also like to control my system from a smartphone and I was wondering why Labview has implemented applications for Android and Apple, but not Windows Phone? Are there policy issues or just not yet implemented? If not, I would gladly develop an application for WindowsPhone8, as it would help me remotly control my crane.
    Thank you in advance,
    Catalin Ionita
    "Politehnica" University of Bucharest

    Hello Catalin,
There are a few options that are available for this application, I'll start with the simplest hardware with the most difficult software and then progress from there.
The simplest implementation that I can think of would be a high channel count digital I/O device, where you power a custom H-Bridge or similar motor driving circuit. Based on a 6 or 4 pole stepper motor this would translate to 20-30 digital channels. Something as small as a NI USB-6504 (24-ch, 8.5mA) would work with very low performance. This implementation would only have software timed digital output with a significant amount of jitter and variability, as well as the 8.5mA max current drive per channel which would require extremely high input impedance on the drive circuit.
The next step up in implementation would be a digital I/O device with Hardware timing such as a NI PCIe-6321 or a NI PCIe-6323. These cards will allow a buffered digital output which will significantly reduce jitter and increase the performance of this control.
Both of the above methods would require you to program the motion control for the stepper motors, and would also require an external drive for providing the power to the stepper. This could be something as simple as a custom built H-Bridge, a simple stepper motor driver such as this one available from sparkfun.com: Big Easy Driver.
The next option would be using the motion modules such as a NI 9501 or a system built by following the NI Stepper Motion System Selection Guide. This would be the most complicated hardware, however this would enable you to use the National Instruments SoftMotion Module for programming instead of writing all the code from scratch.
In regards to the implementation for LabVIEW implementation for Windows Phone, I am unsure of whether this will or will not be implemented. Please feel free to post your ideas on implementation on the NI Idea Exchange, and thanks for the feedback!
    Cheers,

  • How do I choose the right HD for my macbook pro 13"?

It has a 250gb SATA 5400rpm drive already.  I want something WAAAYY bigger.  I just want to make sure it is the right size and can copy over my old hd.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your present OS X boot partition (no Bootcamp or Filevault) to a blank external drive, you can hold the option key down and boot from this clone.
    Make the drive switch
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Boot from the clone and use Disk Utility to Erase the drive with the Zero or (on 10.7) the next to last option on the right to map off any bad sectors on the drive. (takes some time but worth it)
Then use CCC to reverse clone and reboot normally.

  • Please help with choosing the right text component

    Hello,
In my applet, I need a single-line text component with the following capabilities:
1: Support for bold font (entire text, not just part of it)
2: Support for underlined text (entire text, not just part of it)
    3: Support for blinking text
4: Ability to put caret anywhere within the text field with mouse
    5: Support for field validation
6: Ability to handle various key events and modify the text and/or move around caret position accordingly.
Now, I know there are at least 4 different text components: JTextField, JTextArea, JEditorPane, JTextPane. Which one of these is most suitable for the above features? Is it possible to use JTextField to support all of the above?

Here is a link to the Java Swing tutorial which discusses the text components.
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/text.html
I think you need to use a JEditorPane or a JTextPane (although I'm not sure any of the components support blinking text). A demo program shows some of the capabilities of these components:

  • Help on choosing the right Bluetooth Device

This isn't troubleshooting, but I really am in a stuck of which bluetooth headset I should get after looking at many options. I need help deciding which bluetooth headset to get that will be a perfect match for both my new iPhone (3G) and 80GB PS3. I've looked into the Jabra BT5010, Plantronics' Voyager 815, 520, 855, and Discovery 665 as well, which is absolutely genius (short from its rubbish 3.5 hour battery life for the former mentioned Plantronics device). I think I've narrowed it down to those two (BT5010 and 665), but I am open to new recommendations if you lot have any. I partly don't know what I am talking about because all this is new with me even the ps3 and iphone, which will come 11 July. Here are my thoughts:
Multipoint, good voice/sound quality, and battery life are the three key factors in decision making for me, but with the 665 I will make a battery life an exception, since it is sacrificed for superior sound quality (also without MP). Furthermore, is Multipoint really necessary between a PS3 and iPhone? I didn't think it was vital but just a leisure feature. The BT5010 has 10 hours of battery life along with multipoint I believe and fair quality so I plan on going with that one for compatibility reasons for the PS3. Please advise. Cheers!
P.S. If I had the money I'd by the 665 for my iPhone (I don't talk THAT much) and the BT5010 for the PS3. Also, I looked at Aliph's Jawbone, is that any good for what it's worth?

  • Choosing the right version for low-cost server

After a recent bump on my Internet speed, my ISP changed and my old ISP is providing only domain and email hosting (with no change in price). Thus I am entertaining building a simple server to handle these chores in-house. This is mainly for home use, with some small in-home business where we'd want to have web page and email, but limited streaming, etc. As I am trying to do this 'on the cheap' I'm looking at all options from installing up to 10.5.x on my old G4-upgraded B&W to buying a Mac Mini Server with 10.6. I would like to have the ability to spam filter all email coming into the domain before it gets to the users (family). Thoughts on the most economical solution? How far up the version list must I go to get better reliability? Initially we'll only need 6 users for now.

The only thing that I require is that I need Snapping windows manigment. So I can have 2 windows snaped left and right titled together on the same screen. If you tell me I can configure LXDE to do that I could probably go for it. But since Gnome 3 supports it on the fly I don't mind the excessive use of Ram. This machine is Work/Office /code related.
I would recommend using pure openbox (ie just the window manager); it has pre-set keybindings for snapping (openbox calls it "aerosnap" in the rc.xml config file) & is significantly lighter than LXDE. If you require something even faster, try one of the tiling window managers such as DWM or i3. Tilers are great once you get used to them

  • Choosing the right language for movies downloadable on the iTunes Store

    Hello,
I just wanted to point out, that last night, I almost bought a movie in the non-original version through my iPhone/iPad and Apple TV, and this would have been a first (mistake). I have now noticed at work on iTunes that it does say what language the movie is in - I've also noticed some are multilingual, and some are just synchronized, and the language of the synopsis is not necessarily in the language of the actual movie, although I couldn't find my example from last night (?).
My suggestion would be to either introduce a preferred language option, or to clearly distinguish the languages in which a movie is available, to make sure appointments are avoided!
    Thank you!
