HELP ME. Client Configuration with Data Guard

Hi,
I made a DATA GUARD configuration with Oracle 10g r2 and GRID CONTROL 10.2.0.3.
I've 1DB OMS, 1 DB primary, 1 DB standby phisical, 1 DB observer, fast-startfailover on.
Everything works fine: failover, switchover.
My question is: how the client knows what DB is open when the primary DB fail? How to configure the client can know what the DB is active?
thanks.

Configure the client failover in the tnsnames.ora. The How To will be in the Data Gaurd configuration guide you are using.

I have one problem with Data Guard. My archive log files are not applied. However I have received all archive log files to my physical Standby db
I have created a Physical Standby database on Oracle 10gR2 (Windows XP professional). Primary database is on another computer.
In Enterprise Manager on Primary database it looks ok. I get the following message “Data Guard status Normal”
But as I wrote above ”the archive log files are not applied”
After I created the Physical Standby database, I have also done:
    1. I connected to the Physical Standby database instance.
    CONNECT SYS/SYS@luda AS SYSDBA
    2. I started the Oracle instance at the Physical Standby database without mounting the database.
    STARTUP NOMOUNT PFILE=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\database\initluda.ora
    3. I mounted the Physical Standby database:
    ALTER DATABASE MOUNT STANDBY DATABASE
    4. I started redo apply on Physical Standby database
alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session
    5. I switched the log files on Physical Standby database
    alter system switch logfile
    6. I verified the redo data was received and archived on Physical Standby database

    Please help me!!!!

    Hi,
After several tries my redo logs are applied now. I think in my case it had to do with the tnsnames.ora. At this moment I have both database in both tnsnames.ora files using the SID and not the SERVICE_NAME.
Now I want to use DGMGRL. Adding a configuration and a stand-by database is working fine, but when I try to enable the configuration DGMGRL gives no feedback and it looks like it is hanging. The log, although says that it succeeded.
In another session 'show configuration' results in the following, confirming that the enable succeeded.
    DGMGRL> show configuration
    Configuration
    Name: avhtest
    Enabled: YES
    Protection Mode: MaxPerformance
    Fast-Start Failover: DISABLED
    Databases:
    avhtest - Primary database
    avhtestls53 - Physical standby database
    Current status for "avhtest":
Warning: ORA-16610: command 'ENABLE CONFIGURATION' in progress
It there anybody that experienced the same problem and/or knows the solution to this?
    With kind regards,
    Martin Schaap

  • Init SID .ora during configuration of Data Guard - advice required

    Hi All,
I am looking to implement data guard across 2 RAC clusters. One cluster will be primary and the other is for Disaster Recovery.
I have already set up the two 11g R 2 RAC clusters on RHEL 5 and now need some pointers to good docs for data guard install.
Can some one direct me to good step by step info for configuring data guard between to RAC clusters - detailed explanations of each step would be useful too, in particular around the init.ora file configuration changes between the primary and DR sites
    Much appreciated

    Hi Steve,
    look at the MAA Whitepapers:

  • Database is configured for Data Guard

I am run a UTF8 conversion on a development database that has been cloned from Data Guard. There is a warning in Migration Status: "Database is configured for Data Guard" What is the DMU looking at to determine this? The database is open in read-write mode and it behaving like a primary database (I run the DMU scan and run updates to fix invalid representations). I would like to know what settings I need to update.
Is this preventing me from converting tables using CTAS? When I try to select this for all tables I get the message, "The DMU does not support the conversion method "Copy data using CREATE TABLE AS SELECT" for tables that are involved in an Oracle Streams process, like capture or apply. Use another available conversion method for the table"
    Thanks,
    Ben

The DMU checks if the parameter DG_BROKER_START is set to true.
The problem with CTAS is independent from Data Guard. The DMU checks for tables that:
    - are source of asynchronous Streams capture, or
    - have update conflict handlers, or
    - have DML handlers, or
    - have conflict resolution parameters
The above tables are considered configured for Oracle Streams and are not supported by CTAS conversion method. This is because the CTAS method creates a converted copy of the table and drops the original. The DMU is not capable of moving the Streams configuration information from the old table to the new one.
    Thanks,
    Sergiusz

  • Need help on struts configuration with ColdFusion 10 using IIS

We need help on struts configuration with ColdFusion 10 using IIS.
Earlier we were using ColdFusion 8 with IIS 6 for one of our application.  This application internally calls struts. After upgrading to ColdFusion 10 struts calls are not loading. We get 404 error.
In ColdFusion 8 struts were configured using  actions extension .do in IIS from this file-
    C:\ColdFusion8\runtime\lib\wsconfig\jrun_iis6.dll.
But in ColdFusion 10 this file is not present as ColdFusion 10 uses Tomcat in place of Jrun.
Also there is no information in ColdFusion log file.

    1) how can i configure the time capsule in order to operate as a remote base station synchronizing with the relay using the ethernet port?
Configure the Time Capsule to act as a bridge (not distributing IP addresses). Also configure the Time Capsule to create an 802.11n wireless network with a unique network name (SSID). That's it.
    2) how can i avoid that my powerbook while accessing my wireless network does connect through the relay station instead of using the time capsule?
Configure the Time Capsule to use a different network name than the WDS link between the 2 AirPort Express (AX). Configure the PowerBook to use the Time Capsule network.
There are 2 pieces of information that you should be aware of...
    (1) None of the PowerBooks are capable of 802.11n.
    (2) The WDS link cuts your available bandwidth in half. So the wireless link to your neighbor's has a maximum potential of 27 Mbps.
Let's for a minute assume that you have a Mac compatible with 802.11n. In your configuration the time you could take advantage of the 802.11n speed is when the Mac is sending/recieving data directly from/to the Time Capsule.
There would be NO speed increase in Internet access. The speed of Internet access is going to be controlled by the slowest link in the path to the Internet. That is probably the connection to the ISP. The next slowest path is the WDS link to your neighbor's.
    Duane,
I am in a similar situation, sharing internet with my neighbor. Do you think it would be plausible to hook up a vonage phone adapter to time capsule's ethernet port if time capsule is bridging from my neighbor's router in the configuration you have described? A check of my upload speed shows 1.67Mbps (powerbookG4 w/ airport extreme). Vonage reccommends 90kbps minimum upload speed. Am I going to lose some speed putting the Vonag adapter behind time capsule?
    Thank you

    Hi ,
Could any one provide the steps on how to setup 11gR2 two node RAC With Dataguard . Could the 11R2 Active database duplication can be used in setting up the standby ?
I just need the order of steps to be followed to set up the environment.
    Thanks,
    shashi.

    Hi Fiedi ,
    Thanks for the reply .
I know how to build the oracle dataguard . But , I'm looking for the order of steps that I need to follow to build 11gR2 RAC with data guard.
1] Set up the Grid Infrsatructure for the 2 node RAC .
    2] Create the database .
3] Modify the init.ora prameter to chage the above created database as primary .
4] Set up the grid infrastructure for the 2 node RAC on the DR site.
5] Create the standby database using 11gR2 active database dupication.
Is the above order correct ? If not , let me know the correct order of steps that needs to be followed to setup 11gR2 RAC with dataguard.

  • Rolling upgrade with Data Guard

I'm interesting if this table of possible upgrade from documentation (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28300/preup.htm#i1007814) is true, if I have a plan to do rolling upgrade with Data Guard?

I thinking no, that table does not appear to have Rolling Upgrade Information.
If I read the document correctly you can only this with a logical standby database in Data Guard.
Larry Carpenter's book has some information on this in Chapter 11.
There is also a separate Data Guard section here where you might find more information.

  • Repository with Data Guard

Can i use a database with Data Guard for HA with "fast connect failover" for your EM repository database?

Yes, it is the preferred method. Take advantage of the DG ability to execute a trigger on switchover/failover to move the service used by the OMS from the primary to the standby.

  • Problem with data guard Creating a Physical Standby Database turorial

There is a tutorial of Creating a data guard Physical Standby Database:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_db/ha/dataguard/physstby/physstdby.htm
I tried to install it on two servers. One for primary database second for physical standby.
I have error on C. Creating the standby database over the network, action #6:
"On the standby system, set the ORACLE_SID environment variable to your <physical standby SID> (i.e. orclsby1) and start the instance in NOMOUNT mode with the text initialization parameter file."
When I try to connect to idle instance there is an error pops up:
    C:\>sqlplus / as sysdba
    SQL*Plus: Release 11.1.0.7.0 - Production on Thu May 21 16:28:10 2009
Copyright (c) 1982, 2008, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    ERROR:
    ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
I'v checked listener and it is runned. There is no service for database because there is no database yet.
The question is did some one installed data guard configuration using this tutorial? Is there any errors in it? What should I do to finish this installation?

On Windhose for every instance a service must have been created using the oradim command.
Oracle tutorials are usually Unix-centric, as Windhose is an odd man out, so they don't discuss that bit.
'Kindly do the needful' and create the service prior to starting the instance in nomount mode
Hint: oradim is documented and has a help=y clause.
IIRC there is an option in database control (in the maintenance part) which automates everything.

  • Best Practice for monitoring database targets configured for Data Guard

We are in the process of migrating our DB targets to 12c Cloud Control.
In our current 10g environment the Primary Targets are monitored and administered by OEM GC A, and the Standby Targets are monitored by OEM GC B.  Originally, I believe this was because of proximity and network speed, and over time it evolved to a Primary/Standby separation.  One of the greatest challenges in this configuration is keeping OEM jobs in sync on both sides (in case of switchover/failover).
For our new OEM CC environment we are setting up CC A and CC B.  However, I would like to determine if it would be smarter to monitor all DB targets (Primary and Standby) from the same CC console.  In other words, monitor and administer DB Primary and Standby from the same OEM CC Console.   I am trying to determine the best practice.  I am not sure if administering a swichover from Cloud Control from Primary to Standby requires that both targets are monitored in the same environment or not.
I am interested in feedback.   I am also interested in finding good reference materials (I have been looking at Oracle documentation and other documents online).   Thanks for your input and thoughts.  I am deliberately trying to keep this as concise as possible.

OMS is a tool it is not need to monitor your primary and standby what is what I meant by the comment.
The reason you need the same OMS to monitor both the primary and the standby is in the Data Guard administration screen it will show both targets. You also will have the option of doing switch-overs and fail-overs as well as convert the primary or standby. One of the options is also to move all the jobs that are scheduled with primary over to the standby during a switch-over or fail-over.
There is no document that states that you need to have all targets on one OMS but that is the best method for the reason of having OMS. OMS is a tool to have all targets in a central repository. If you start have different OMS server and OMS repository you will need to log into separate OMS to administrator the targets.

  • 9i RAC to single standby DB with Data guard

    hello gurus,
I have a question, Im trying to set up a standby database.
The primary DB would be a two node 9i RAC R2, to a one single standby DB.
I done this already. My question is if I can use data guard with this type of configuration. I have try to configured it with OEM and the GUI does not support this.
does any one know if this can be achieve using dataguard's CLI??
    thanks

well that is something out of my reach for the moment.
I have to do everything on 9i.
I have the standby environment running already, i just want to make my life easier trying to ad min this environment using data guard

  • What is the major plus with Data Guard compare to standby

    Hi,
We don't need active active replication between our prod and DR, our DR can be 20 minutes RPO (Recovery Point Objective) so what is the main advantage of configuring and installing oracle data guard compare to a simple standby server?
My understanding of data guard is a that oracle will ship your log auto on the DR and apply it instead of me, doing it with 2 script (one on primary server that ship log over, the second on standby that apply the archive log).

    1. Your Primary site get hit by something you can failover to the standby.
    2. If you have a large group of "Reader" users on the Primary you can switch them to the Standby using Active Data Guard.
    3. You can do a switchover and avoid an outage if your Primary server needs work of any kind.
    4. You can preform backup at either site taking even more load off you primary if needed.
    or as the books says:
Disaster recovery, data protection, and high availability.
    Down Side
    1. Cost
    2. Network Load (or additional load)

  • EM Job scheduling with Data Guard Database

    Hi there,
I have an "Issue" on efficient scheduling Enterprise Manager (12.1.0.3) Jobs again databases which are protected with Oracle Data Guard.
    What I want:
A Job should be run against the database, which has the "Primary Database Role" from Data Guard point of view.
When I'm scheduling the job with the Database System as job target, where the Primary and Standby Databases are exisitng in, the Job is executed against all databases.
I can put check-step as first step in the job to check the role by sql, but when I let 2 of 3 job executions ( 2 standby 1, primary ) fail, I will have o mange these failed jobs all time.
Creating an dynamic group also isn't helping, as the property of database role can't be used for defining the group membership.
I have taken a look at emcli but also there I dont find a possibility tho check for database role.
Any one a idea on this topic?
