HELP ME!  DUAL 2.5 GIG OVERHEATING?!?!

I'm really starting to freak out about this. I am using some pretty intense filters in Final Cut Pro 5 and have to let my machine render over night. As soon as I start the beast up I open up the Temperature Monitor and it's jumping between 170 Fahrenheit and 205 Fahrenheit on CPU B. CPU A sits around 170 degrees Fahrenheit. Also the memory controller is between 160 degrees and on the high end 190 degrees Fahrenheit.
I thought that the dual 2.5 was supposed to run cooler?? This thing is a space heater. Also I live in North Carolina. Tonight it is about 65 degrees. I have the windows open in the office, the fan on high and the computer sits under my desk. It's got a good bit of room to breathe. Should I put it ON the desk to give it that extra airflow? What are the chances of damage? I can hold off on renders for a little while. Thanks for your help and time!

That's normal for that computer. My 2.5GHz's CPUs would run around 190F+ when doing something processor intense. It will shut itself down if it gets to hot. The CPU dies are smaller and run hotter on a 2.5GHz unit. That's why Apple went to liquid cooling on them. I would keep it on the floor where the air is cooler. Just make sure the back exhaust is not restricted.

  • Quick help with dual booting

    I have hopped around on different distros and I found that Archlinux would be the best solution for me.  However, I need help with dual booting Archlinux and Vista as I will need Vista around for one program and a game that do not work with any Linux distro that I have tried.  I have not done a text based install before, I have only used newbie distros but I want to move on to Archlinux.
    I will only need one partition for Vista and one for Arch.  I believe I can achieve the goal of dual booting them by shrinking the vista partition, and then installing Arch in the remaining space and use GRUB to boot the necessary partitions when my laptop is powered on.  This works with Ubuntu, so I assume it shall be the same basic concept with Arch.  I can follow the instructions on installing, and the installation is easier than I had expected it to be.  I have one question, how would I go about using the above technique that I mentioned during the install?  I would like to know how to do it correctly, I cannot risk messing up Vista.  I'm fifteen and my dad would be very frustrated if I did mess up Vista.  I would appreciate some specific instructions, because I really like Arch from what I have read.  I also look forward to being an active member in the community as well if all goes well.

    Welcome!
    Another young one I see! I'm currently 17, however I started using linux when I was 13 (8th grade year).
    You can resize the vista partition by using gparted. You can download the gparted livecd from there website (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php). I do not know specific directions, but it is pretty obvious how to resize, and if you need help you can probably google something like "resize partition gparted". I WARN YOU that you do risk data loss resizing the partition. I don't believe the risk is high, but it still there, so backup any important data that you may have in case something goes wrong!!
    Do you have your own computer that you can experiment on? That might be a safe option than using your dads. I am been fortunate to have hand-me-down systems, but when I was young I made my dad angry quite a few times "experimenting!"
    If your dad's system has enough juice, you may want to consider install arch in a virtual machine to get idea of however thing works. Following the Beginners Guide on the wiki will be you best bet for a successful and well configured machine (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners_Guide). If you really want to play it safe you can even go as far as install windows in a virtual machine, resizing the partition, and installing arch in the same virtual machine.
    I hate to say this, but if you absolutely can not mess up vista, I would advice against installing any other OS and messing with the partition scheme. As whenever you mess with the partitions you run a risk of messing up Vista (or any other os for that matter). If you don't already have your own computer which you can tinker with, it might not be a bad idea to look at getting one. They are becoming cheap, you can build one for about $300-$400USD, or buy one for probably around $400.
    Hope this helps a bit...

  • HELP! Dual processors not seen. What happened to them?

    I have a twofold problem, both on AGP Graphics machines with the Sawtooth boards. I purchased mine used about a year ago and it came with a dual 550 processor upgrade installed. It works great, but somewhere recently, maybe after my latest upgrade (10.4.8) I checked my system profiler and it now shows the processors as dual 500s. It used to say dual 550. Any idea where the other 50s went? Could this be a glitch in the OS that doesn't allow it to see the the extra gHz? I may try zapping the PRAM, but do you think it's because of the software? I'm baffled. The other part of my problem is I just upgraded the other AGP machine with a dual 500 from a gigabit ethernet unit. It showed up fine as a dual 500 in the profiler. Then I swapped in a 160 gig internal and popped the OS on it and relegated the smaller, second internal into a storage drive, erasing the OS on that one. After doing that, it just shows up in the profiler as a single 500. Weird. I've never heard of a dual processor losing half and still work fine on the other. As I said before, it was showing up fine until I installed Tiger on the new drive, transfered the info from the previous system via the installer, and now, only one processor shows. Any ideas or suggestions for both machines? Particularly the one missing the entire half of the processor? Thanks!
    G4 Dual 550   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.2 GB RAM, 380 GB Storage, DVD Burner/Handy Slide-Out Cup Holder, USB2, TV Tune

    I am having the same problem. I have a 160GB drive I've been using for years with 10.3 installed. Took that one out and started fresh with 2 160GB drives (one WD and one Maxtor, both 8GB cache)and set them up as "concatenated" RAID set in Disk Utility (while booted from Tiger disc). Installed Tiger, only shows ONE 450mhz processor in Activity Monitor and System Profiler. And it's definitely only running one processor because my Mac is running VERY slow. I went back to the original 160GB drive running 10.3x and everything is fine, 2 450mhz processors showing and fast as ever.
    I've been searching apple support, google and the like but no answers. PLEASE HELP!!!
    Thanks, Eric

  • Need help with dual monitor setup for KDE 3.5.5.

    Using this xorg.conf file, only my NEC LCD analog monitor could display KDE while the Samsung digital can't.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your help guys, I'm halfway there.
    The second monitor shows the KDE desktop, but it isn't exactly what I expected.  Right now, both monitors display at 1024x768 (each) or 2048x768 (total).  The larger monitor stretches and distorts the display of 1024x768 to its natural resolution at 1440x900 and it isn't what I wanted.  Other than that, the dual desktop setup behaves what I expected to.
    Here's a snippet of my xorg.conf that currently works:

  • Alittle help with dual-setup with ati radeon 5770

    Hello everyone, I have been trying to setup a dual display with 2 flat panel monitors.
    1. A WestingHouse Digital Electronics "17"
    2. A Goldstar Company Ltd "23" (Main Display)
    Im currently running the gnome desktop, what im trying to setup, is have both the gnome desktop show up on both monitors. For example if I wanted to move something from my main monitor to the smaller one to the left of me, I want to NOT be able to do that, and only have the mouse be able to move accross the 2. 2 Seperate desktops one 2 seperate screens. Im not quite sure what its called, Im thinking maybe its a clone Desktop? Anways, The graphics card Im using is an
    Ati Radeon 5770, has 2 vga ports. I currently have the "video-ati" driver installed and works well with my main screen, but im unable to get my secondary screen (to the left of me) working. I tried going into System>>Preferences>>Monitors, and tried tinkering with the display, and tried enabling the 2 monitors and moving them from left to right, to see if that would possibly let it show up or start to function, but only the main screen works. I generated a new xorg.conf, since I didnt have one prior to installing Arch, I was following these to guides
    http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors
    http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors/ATI
    both are very nice, but Im still not quite understanding yet. Defiantly am trying. I edited my xorg.conf a few times, but got the same results each time, just the screen going blank and X crashing.  I have here a copy of my xorg.conf, Xorg.conf.log, and xrandr output
    Xorg.conf
    http://pastebin.com/hbmdKrfv
    Xorg-logs
    http://pastebin.com/USZvtAMJ  (Im thinking the Vsync and Hsync have something that might help)
    Xrandr
    http://pastebin.com/2cV95Ef4
    Thank you guys!

    An xorg.conf may not be necessary, but I still find it nice to have the control that the file provides.
    In looking over yours, I see several things that could be causing your problems.
    First off,  I notice that you have Screen0  that is using Card0 and Monitor0.  This part looks ok.
    When I look at Screen1, I notice that you are using  ATI Graphics Adapter1 and Monitor1.   I don't see entries for either of those, although you have an ATI Graphics Atapter2, but there is no entry for your second monitor.
    I also notice that you are trying to use both radeon and fglrx as drivers.  As far as I know (and I don't have an ATI video card at the moment), you can use one driver or the other, but not both.
    After you have these things fixed, then you can put in the Screen section in your server layout to describe the positioning of your second monitor.
    All in all, the issues that you have to fix are minor,  but frusterating if you are too close to the situation.
    Good luck.

  • [SOLVED] Help with dual monitors (second monitor won't wake up)

    Hi.  I'm trying to set up dual monitors, but I can't seem to get it to work.
    I've got an ASUS P8H67-M EVO motherboard, and I'm using the xf86-video-intel driver.  I'm using one VGA and one HDMI.

    So it looks to me like both displays are being detected.  The geometry looks such that one display is on top of the other, but I can change that using an xorg.conf.d config file (e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … xorg.conf).  I also tried using arandr.
    The real problem is that the display on HDMI3 just isn't "waking up".  The power is on, but it just sits there in sleep mode.
    Any help would be great.  I might just be missing something simple.  Thanks.
    Edit:  I just saw a short list of window managers near the bottom of the Arch Multihead page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … _xorg.conf).  I don't see openbox on that list.  Does that mean I'm SOL if I want to use openbox with multiple monitors?  This page seems to imply that it should work fine with openbox http://magnatecha.com/dual-monitors-wit … nd-xrandr/.

    I use XFCE, and when I boot my computer I just run:
    xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --auto --output DVI-I-2 --auto --left-of DVI-I-1
    I'm assuming if you modify the names appropriately that it'll work too.  I have had issues before trying to run dual monitors without taking both outputs off of a single video card (which is what I'm doing now).  For example, I had a graphics card with one (VGA) output and a VGA output on my motherboard.  But, connecting the graphics card disabled the on-board VGA.  So it is possible (I'm not an expert here) that two displays coming off the motherboard may not work for hardware reasons.

  • Please Help iBook dual USB crash

    Hi everyone
    I have a big problem with my ibook (dual USB) 700mhz OSX 10.3.9
    Since last night when I try to start it, after completing loading all the stuff and showing also the desktop it crashes and asks me to restart holding down the power button or sometimes it freezes and I have anyway to restart it.
    I tried to boot from the OS install CD ROM holding the "C" key but the system keeps booting from the HD.
    The same comes when I try to run the hardware test CD. It just doesn't work with the "C" and the system try to boot normally from HD. (What have I to do to boot from a CD???)
    I can just say that my HD (20GB)was almost full and that two days ago I changed the firmware of the monitor installing a patch to have a mirroring display.
    Please help me, next week I have to travel for work and I need my iBook!

  • Please Help - Need to convert 400 gigs of giga samples into my EXS24

    Does anybody know what would be the fastest and most efficient way to convert 400 gigs of giga file samples from my PC into my logic pro EXS24 sampler on my mac?
    I purchased chicken system's translator professional which does batch conversion, but my pc was not working well with that application. I need to find a new way of converting. I know i can convert giga samples one by one in the exs24 but with 400 gigs of giga samples, it could take days and days.
    Any ideas wold be extremely helpful.
    Thank you for your time.

    CDXtract is gettin' third'ed by me.... However, u r into one heu of a conversion armageddon....
    I recently did a huge convertion of my samplecell II lib into AKAI format...
    My recommendation is to convert on the fly - meaning - convert what u have to convert when u need it.
    And make sure when doing batch convertions that the sample programs u really want to WORK like it did in the GIGA gets special attention... Lots of the conversions done by cdxtract - are indeed converted but attack - decay etc... veries from sampler to sampler although the values are the same

  • Help with dual monitors

    I installed Arch on an old Asus MB, and have spent a couple days trying to get dual monitors working. The board is a P4S8X-X with no onboard video, an AGP slot, and six PCI slots.
    First, I tried using an AGP card together with a PCI card with no luck.  I tried using two ATI pci video cards, again no good.
    So, I downloaded a MB manual and discovered that the PCI slots and the AGP slot are all shared. Quote the manual: "When using PCI cards on shared slots, ensure that the drivers support 'Share IRQ" or that the cards do not need IRQ assignments.  Otherwise, conflicts will arise between the two PCI groups, making the system unstable and the card inoperable."
    I'm wondering if dual monitors are possible with this board.  I have another Asus board with an AGP and three PCI slots apparently not shared.
    Couple years ago, I installed dual monitors on my FreeBsd computer, using two cards on an MSI board, with no trouble.  What I'm looking for is two independent monitors, each able to run an application.  I use the JWM window manager. I haven't posted an xorg.conf file as there have been too many to display.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Problem solved.  I switched motherboards and dual monitors are running.

I have years of teaching (programs that won't run on os10, files, etc.)stored on the os 9 and don't want to lose it all. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    If you do an Upgrade or Archive and Install then the drive is not erased. However, it would be a good idea to backup the drive first. Apparently you do not back up so this is a good time to start.
    First,
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. You can now proceed with either an Upgrade or an Archive and Install. I would recommend the latter if you have sufficient free space available.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Next,
    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Need help with dual slider

    Hi everyone, I am a flash designer new to flex, i know that
    Flex is geared more towards coders than designers, but i have a
    pretty good grasp on how to work w/ flex and as3. usually if i find
    some example i can mold my project after that. anyways here's my
    problem: i found a dual slider component by
    Brendan
    Meutzner and have it working great. what i need is for its
    change event to affect a grid of items in an xml file based on
    price. i know i need to put these items in an array collection.
    however, i found the adobe
    FlexStore
    and realized i could download the source by right clicking on it.
    in the products section there is the code and everything i need to
    make my project work (the slide updates visible products based on
    their price) but my problem is it only works the first time(if you
    move the slider you will see it update the product view but only
    from the initial values that wee set). here is a
    LINK
    to my files (with sourceview enabled) so if anyone can help me out,
    it would be much appreciated. feel free to email me,
    [email protected]
    if you need any more info to help me out. thanks!

    Thanks NED!
    that was it... I got the code below working.
    stop();
    maskee.cacheAsBitmap = true;
    vol_slider.cacheAsBitmap = true;
    maskee.mask = vol_slider;
    stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,myFunction);
    function myFunction(event:Event) {
    vol_switch.x = vol_slider.x;
    function startDragHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
    vol_slider.startDrag(false, new Rectangle(2, 0, 298, 0));
    stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, stopDragHandler);
    function stopDragHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
    vol_slider.stopDrag();
    stage.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, stopDragHandler);
    vol_switch.buttonMode = true;
    vol_switch.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, startDragHandler);

  • Help!  Dual G5 won't start for more than 2 seconds

    That's it... It shut itself down a little while ago and now will not start. Upon hitting the button, the light flashes once and goes out, the fans surge briefly, and then everything goes dead again. Removing the power cord makes a relay click.
    I've tried leaving the power cord off for several minutes, disconnecting all attached devices, removing added RAM, disconnecting an added hard drive, zapping PRAM (which didn't seem to do anything since it wasn't on long enough)and nothing helps. There's a mild burnt electrical smell.
    I have a very bad feeling about this. Anything to try other than a trip to the shop?

    One of the processors is burnt. Talked to the shop today and they say the machine boots fine on the single remaining processor with the bad processor removed. No power-up if it's left in.
    I'm more than a little miffed that I need to spend ~$600 on a computer that's just 2 years old. Collecting dust in my basement I've got an Apple IIe, some Mac SEs, a Mac II, a Centris and maybe a couple more Macs I can't recall. All still work fine. I've been using Macs since 1985 and have grown used to the idea that they just work forever, well past their useful lifespans.
    This experience is a wake-up call that we're in a new world. Buyer beware.

  • HELP I am missing 340 gig's!! "hard drive help needed"

    ok so i had a 160gig hardrive in my macbook pro. i bought a new 500gig for it. i used Drive Genius 2 to copy the old hard drive to the new one. when i installed the new one everything works great except it only see's the 160 gig not 500? so my question is how can i make my computer recognize the whole hard drive?
    thanks for any and all help!!

    Start over by first prepping your new drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from theUtilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    Connect your old drive that you have installed in an external enclosure and boot from it by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION button until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Now clone back to your new drive:
    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the internal drive.
    Source means the external startup drive.

  • Help with dual booting...PLEASE

    so I just got a new laptop and ArchLinux is running great on it, I love everything about it.  I originally intended to run WinXP under KVM because there are some windows apps I need to use for my job.  It turns out my bios doesn't support KVM and I can't get what I need to run under wine, so I decided to bite the bullet and install xp.
    My hard drive partitions are as follows:
    20 gb boot
    5 gb swap
    150 gb home
    75 gb free
    when I try to install windows xp it can't detect any hard drive installed on my computer.
    all of my partitions are primary partitions, is that the problem?
    if it is, is it possible to change the swap to an extended partition so i have room for another primary?
    any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    thank you!

    No, that's not the problem. As Kai allready mentioned, Windows is unable to handle the SATA-HD.
