Help me extend my network please!

I have a home office where they physically can't install a cable outlet in here. So my cable modem and airport extreme are located in the bedroom all the way across the apartment. I want to include my printers on the wireless network, but I don't want to move my printers into the bedroom near the airport base station. What can I do to keep my printers in the office but also have them on the wireless network?
Thanks!

  • Help with extending a network using AirPort Express

I am UK based and have BT Infinity Internet connection. I have a BT NTE which provides an ethernet connection for my home network. I have an AirPort Express 2nd Gen setup to provide initial router etc with the local LAN port connected to a 24 port gigabit switch. I have structured cabling providing ethernet ports in each room.
PC's etc are configured as fixed IP in the rooms they are in and connect via ethernet, however, my wifi (because of the construction of the house) is very poor especially upstairs and at the back of the house.
I have setup a second AirPort Express at the back of the house connected via the ethernet port, assigned a static IP, configured bridge mode, and setup Extended Network. However, my internal network is now very flacky, wifi keeps dropping out, Internet access for all devices is up and down, in short, it's unusable. However, If I use the second AirPort Express in Join a Network mode it appears to be more stable!
So Q1 - What is the difference between Extend a Network (via ethernet) and Join a Network (via ethernet) and what are the benefits of both? (which one should I be using?)
and Q2 - assuming Q1 is Extend a Network is the correct way to go, can someone please explain in complete detail the exact process and configuration for this to work effectively? If I can extend correctly I am looking at adding a third AirPort Express in the garage so I have wifi access in the garden and in the garage.
    Many thanks for all assistance

  • Can you help with extending my network?

I have an Airpot Extreme base station and three Extremes (all N).  I have my network configured to Extend the network.  My problem is one of my AExpress' does not seem to be extending the range.  The green light is on and it is recognized in Airport Utility.  However when I am standing next to the device the wireless signal on my phone is barely one bar...The device in question is in my barn about 80 feet from the nearest AExpress and 150 feet from the Airport Extreme (with many walls in between).  Do I need to set up a WDS to gethtis to daisy chain?  I thought the Extend a Network setting did this automatically with N AEpress'?
    Thanks

The newer 802.11n "dynamic WDS" does not allow for a relay station like the older 802.11g "static WDS." In essence, the dynamic WDS only allows for a single main and multiple remotes. Think of it as the main being the hub of a wheel, and the remotes can be any one of the wheel's spokes. The most likely reason the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), at the farthest location from the Extreme, is not working is because it cannot get a good enough signal to extend.
Yes, you could reconfigure all of the base stations for the older WDS. But remember, this version has two major drawbacks: 1) It can only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode, effectively nullifying your 802.11n AirPorts' advantages, and 2) For every base station added, the overall bandwidth is cut in half. So in this case, starting with a maximum of 54 Mbps (max bandwidth for 802.11g): ((54 / 2) / 2) / 2 = 6.75 Mbps ... half the bandwidth of 802.11b!
The other option would be to get an external directional antenna or transceiver, but this would pose two issues as well: 1) Cost, & 2) This would potentially only solve the distance issue for the AirPort located at the barn. The other two AirPorts may not even "see" the directed signal if it is being beamed in a direction opposite of them. As you can imagine, the default antennas built-in the AirPorts are omnidirectional. Using an external directional antenna would change that dynamic.

^^This is what I'm trying to achieve.
If the link doesn't work, here is what I need.
I have a Time Capsule 1TB connected to my modem which is broadcasting WiFi to my MacBook Pro. This works just fine. My step sister needs internet on the PC we have, so I want to plug the Airport Extreme into it and use it to receive the WiFi from the Time Capsule (the PC is no where near the Time Capsule so it cannot be hardwired). However I am running into some difficulties because the Time Capsule and the Extreme seem to both think they are the base station and I want only the Time Capsule to be the base station.
    Suggestions?

I assume that your AirPort Extreme is an 802.11n model. If that is the case, you can configure both base stations to extend the Time Capsule's (TC) wireless network.
    Here are the basic steps:
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Help with Samba/WINS networking, please!!

EDIT: sigh I didn't see there was a 802.11n specific forum...
I have been banging my head on this for hours now and have searched exhaustively with no working answer. I bought an Airport Express to replace an aging 802.11g router. (I have heard great things about the AXP.) But...
I have multiple Macs and Windows boxes on the same network. I'm running a webserver, Subversion server, etc. Across the board, the network shares/servers/etc are referenced by the computer's name. (ie. server, ultra, etc.) So, when I do "ping server" the server at 192.168.1.2 responds, as an example.
BUT, now that I have an Airport Express, NONE of the computer names are resolving. Interestingly, if I do a "net lookup server" it finds the associated IP address. But if I just ping it: no-go. I am fully aware that I could just connect via IP addresses to all the various boxes, but I really don't want to have to print out a list of computers and their associated IP addresses.
I really hope someone can help me. I'm massively frustrated and am really not feeling the "It just works" mantra right now. Thanks in advance.

  • I need help with my secured network please

i have forgotten my password for my secured network so what should i do about this?

That depends on which password you forgot.
If you forgot the router login password, then the only way to recover control of your router is to use the reset button, and reset it to factory defaults.  This will reset the password to "admin".
If you have only forgotten your encryption password, you can look that up in the router.  Point your browser to 192.168.1.1  then enter your user name (if any) and password.  This will take you to your router setup pages.   Click on the tab marked "Wireless"  (on some routers, you will have to go to the "Security" tab instead).  Then start looking through the settings til you find your encryption method (WEP, WPA, WPA2).  Usually, just below this is where you will find your encryption key or encryption password.

They said I need to change my settings to NAT settings. I haven't been able to figure out or find anything. I have also spoken to Apple Support on the phone for hours without being able to figure out how to do this ( i don't think he knew much either lol.) Please help me because I've got about 15-20 devices in my house that require to be connected to the internet and this is just making things ridiculously slow and painful for me.
    Thanks!

It is on DHCP & NAT under router mode yet my isp is still the one issuing ip addresses to my devices instead of the router issuing them

  • Help?  I keep getting "Unexpected Error" everytime I try to use my new Airport Express to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule.

I am trying to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule using the new Airport Express I just bought, but no matter what I try I keep getting "Unexpected Error.  Try again".  The Express is still flashing Amber.  I cannot get it to turn green.  What am I doing wrong here?  Please help me.

Locate the AirPort Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup.
Power off and restart the Time Capsule
Shut down and restart the Mac. Turn on the wireless on the Mac and temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the AirPort Express. In other words, you want to set up the AirPort Express using wireless, since that is the way that it will be used.
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything, and hopefully announces a message of Setup Complete. Click Done.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Avoid obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as much as possible.
Walls, ceilings, mirrors, heavy furniture, etc. just kill the wireless signal quality. Keep any cordless phones as far away from either router as possible.
It would be much better if you could plan to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable, as best case.....you will be losing about half of the network speed trying to use wireless to extend.

  • Help!  Trying to use Airport Express to extend existing network

Computer Illiterate here. I have an Airport Extreme base station and am connected to the internet. I have been trying to extend my network using an Airport Extreme.
I previously had the network set up like this, but after my DSL line was cut, and going through several decades of customer service **** with Verizon to get everything back again, I can't get it all to work together (friend did it for me the first time and is now unavailable).
The problem is that when I open Airport Setup Assistant, it doesn't recognize either the Airport Express or even the Airport Extreme (which is working and I can connect to the internet). In fact there is nothing in the list at all. Reluctant to reset the Airport Extreme because I will then lose my settings I presume. Will I have to create a new network and password and all the rest of it? Barely managed to do that the first time. Anyone have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? Would really appreciate any help.

Here is a way to set up a network with more than one router.

  • Basic help for grey haired guy, please (setting up Time Capsule & network)

Could someone provide me the Idiots Steps to setting up my Time Capsule and extending its range with my Airport Extreme? I have spent almost a day. I don't know WDS from Bridge from PPPOE.
There must be seven simple decisions that need to be made.
    1. Is the TC to be set up as a new wireless network and to be a WDS?
    2. I think my DSL model does the PPPOE thing so how does that impact my settings?
    3. Sometimes the Airport Utility can see the TC and Extreme, other times it plays dumb.
Point me in the right direction, PLEASE.

    1. If the TC is your main wireless network then you want to set it up as a new wireless network and select the Extend this Network option under the wireless tab. You would then setup the Extreme wireless mode as extend a network. If this option isn't available it is because your Extreme is an older model so therefore you will have to use WDS for your wireless network.
    2. If the DSL modem is doing PPoE for you then you don't have to worry about using PPoE on the Time Capsule. The default settings for your Time Capsule for the Internet will be fine for your setup.
    3. Good question. You might want to try hard resetting both devices by holding the reset button from 5-10 seconds.

  • Can't connect PS3 to Airport Express Network - please help!

    Hello,
This may have been done to death before, but I couldn't find it...
I have an 80GB PS3 that I am trying to connect to the internet wirelessly through my Apple Airport Express.
When I follow the setup procedure on my PS3, it finds the Apple Network, I put in the security key and it all seems to be going OK. However, when I test the internet connection, it fails to find the IP address.
Can anyone help me with this? Please???
    Many thanks...

    I have fixed it!
Basically, I had wpa2 encryption enabled. I changed the encryption to wep, which then prompted me to enter a 13 digit password, which I did. Fired up the ps3, entered the new 13 digit password and voila! All working beuatifully.
    Many thanks for your help!

  • Extending wireless network via ethernet help

Hello, I'm helping my sister & brother in law get a wireless network running and was wondering if anyone can share some advice about extending the wireless from an Airport Extreme with an Airport Express. They have no networking experience at all and I have a little so got roped into this.
The house they live in is an unsual design (husband an architect) with a feature mid way through the house which kills the wireless signal stone dead so only one half of the house gets wireless.
    * The Cisco cable modem is a 4 port router with wireless (disabled) and an active DHCP server.
    * The cable modem is plugged into the WAN port on the Airport Extreme.
    * The Airport Extreme is set to Off (bridged mode), obtain IP via DHCP so it acts as a wireless access point.
The above setup works great for any wireless devices, although I am a little unsure if that is the proper way to go about it, I'm not used to Apple gear but bought it for the purpose of extending the network and keeping things simple.
The house was wired for ethernet but things didn't work out so well as the cable modem is a temperamental beast and the one place it would give a reliable link was a place with no ethernet ports nearby.
Anyway the plan is to get some homeplugs (ethernet over powerlines) and link the Airport Extreme and Airport Express that way giving a roaming network but can anyone suggest what settings I use on the Airport Express. Apple's own roaming tutorial seems to contradict the settings I'm already using by turning on connecting sharing for the Airport Extreme which last time I tired I think the cable modem did not like.
    Thanks.

My advice would be to only use the Cisco device as a cable modem and disable all of it's router features. You can then configure the AirPort Extreme to create a wireless network. The built in Wizard will guide you thru this easily.
So you should take it (AirPort Extreme) out of Bridge mode, And use it to set up and administer your network.
After you've done this, check that both the wired and wireless connections are working properly before trying to extend the network.
Once you're able to connect successfully to the AirPort-created network, then you can extend it (if it's still necessary) using the AirPort Express.
This is very easy to do.
In the Airport Extreme be sure to check the box "Allow this network to be extended" in the Wireless tab.
then you'll need to configure the AirPort Express by connecting to it. (This is most easily done by temporarily connecting to it's ethernet jack with an ethernet cable and running the AirPort utility.
Once it finds the Express, Go to the Wireless tab and select  "Extend a wireless network" as the Wireless Mode.
You'll then be presented with a list of Wireless network names. select the name for the network you created with the AirPort Extreme, including any security mode and password you set up.
Click on update to send the configuration to the airport express.
The LED will blink yellow a few times, and if it then turns solid GREEN you're all set.
You can disconnect it from the computer and un plug it.
Then select a location for the Express about half-way between the furthest spot you need wireless access and the Airport Extreme . Plug it into the nearest outlet and the LED should flash yellow and then turn solid green.
When it does, you're all set and should see better wireless access through the rest of the house.
Let me know how you make out.

  • Extending AEBS network with another AEBS Help

I have read the FAQ and instructions on how to use two AEBS units to extend my network, and am having some funky issues. Ill try to summarize:
    1. My home network, "Apple Network 7777" is broadcast by router "AEBS Primary." It has been installed fine for over a year.
    2. I purchased another AEBS today, named "Base Station dd42f9" Connected them via ethernet cable- First making sure that the cable is carrying a signal fine (tested it by plugging laptop directly into it to access the web).
    3. Opened Airport Utility. Selected "AEBS Primary" and set to "Allow Network to be Extended." Updated.
    4. Selected "Base Station dd42f9" from AirPort Utility and set to "extend a network."
Now this is where things get ugly.
When I select my home "Apple Network 7777" to extend in the Base Station dd42f9 settings, sometimes I get a message saying "Network cannot be extended."
I have re-checked the ethernet cable, everything is fine.
I re-check settings in the AEBS Primary, and its set to "allow network to be extended."
As I played around with the new Base Station, it suddenly let me select "Apple Network 7777" and enter my WPA2 password. I do it and my new Base Station dd42f9 updates and restarts.
My network works for about 4 minutes, very well. Then suddenly the whole thing stops working.
    No internet.
AirPort utility cannot read the configurations of EITHER base station. It sees them, but sometimes they go off completely as if there is intermitency.
I have to unplug "Base station dd42f9" to even be able to get AirPort Utility to be able to read the configuration of AEBS primary. I again make sure my settings are correct.
When I hard-reset "Base Station dd42f9" and it is still connected via ethernet cable to AEBS Primary, Airport Extreme sees both units fine again.
I really have no clue what is going on. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Here's how to configure your devices if you are using ethernet to connect between the two AirPort Extremes (AEBS). I assume that you are coming out of the LAN <-> port on the "primary" AEBS and connecting to the WAN on the second AEBS.
You may need to "hard reset" the second AEBS again if AirPort Utility cannot read the configuration.
    _On the primary AEBS:_
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
You do not need to check the box next to "Allow this network to be extended". +(This is only used if you are using wireless only to connect the two AEBS devices together.)+
Make a note of the exact security setting that the "primary" AEBS is using for future reference...see below
Click Update to save your settings
    _On the second AEBS:_
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network +("Extend a wireless network" is only used if you are connecting the two AEBS devices using wireless only. You are not doing this, you are connecting via ethernet)+
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as the primary AEBS
    Radio Mode = Automatic
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = exact same setting as the primary AEBS
Wireless Password = exact same setting as the primary AEBS
Click the Internet icon at the top of the configuration page
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save your settings
You should be good to go.

  • Airport Express joining a network - Please HELP!

I just got an AirPort Express 802.11n Wi-Fi, and I am trying to make it so I can get better connection to the internet from different floors of the building wirelessly. When it decides to actually read the Express I can get to the point where it is asking me for the network I want it to join and I select it and put in the password (which I know is correct), but when I hit continue absolutely nothing happens. Its as if I did nothing. So I'm stuck because it doesn't even tell me if I did something wrong or if it wont work or anything.

Hello feldmane. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If your goal is to extend an existing wireless network with the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), then the option to "join an existing wireless network" would not be the correct choice. If the wireless router you want to extend is another AirPort, then you should use reconfigure them into a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) (for 802.11g) or "extend a network" (for 802.11n). If the other wireless router is NOT another AirPort, then extending with the AXn most likely will not work as very few non-AirPorts are WDS-compatible.
