If you enabled Find My iPhone on your missing device
These steps require that Find My iPhone was enabled on your device before it was lost or stolen.
Attempt to locate your device using Find My iPhone at icloud.com/find, or using the free Find My iPhone app.
Put the device in Lost Mode to set a 4-digit passcode and display a custom message with your phone number on your device. While the device is in Lost Mode, you can also keep track of changes to your device's location. Lost Mode requires that your missing device be using iOS 6 or later. If your device is using iOS 5, you can still lock your device remotely and display a message on the screen.
If you want to delete all of your personal information from your missing device, you can erase it remotely. Please note that when you erase a device, you will no longer be able to locate it.
Report your lost or stolen device to local law enforcement and your wireless carrier. Apple doesn't track or flag lost or stolen products, but you can use My Support Profile (supportprofile.apple.com) to find a list of serial numbers for products that you've purchased or registered with your Apple ID.
Note: If your missing device is offline, you can still put it in Lost Mode, lock it, or erase it. Your commands will take effect when the device comes back online.If you did not enable Find My iPhone on your missing device

You do not need wifi to erase the content of your phone. Go into Settings>iCloud>Find My iPhone>OFF.

You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can) -

You don't need the Find My iPhone app. You need to turn on Find my iPod in Settings > iCloud on your iPod. Then to locate your iPod from your PC, go to https://icloud.com and follow instructions.

I lunfortunately had my iPhone stolen three nights ago and have absolutely no idea where it could be. I went on iCloud.com and used the Find My iPhone service to locate my phone and it showed up with a grey circle meaning offline, but it gave me a location of my iPhone. I do not know anyone who lives here or nearby here. I drove by today and it wasn't anyone who I think would've stole my phone. Now, my phone says offline and cannot be located. I would like to know how was my phone able to be located yesterday even though it was offline? Does that mean the theif turned the location services off? Also, I have a passcode on my phone (not an obvious one either). So, how would the thief be able to get into my settings? This is my first Apple product and I am not very educated in iCloud. Would anyone be able to tell me if it was possible the thief drove by the house that iCloud located the iPhone to, turned my phone on and then turned it off? I am so confused and will do whatever it taked to get my phone back. Help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S.: I was considering filing a police repot and telling them iCloud located my iPhone at that specific address but I have heard they are not much help. Has anyone gotten their phone back with police help? Or does anyone have another website/tool I can use to locate my phone when it is "offline"?
Thank you, Megan.A thief can reset the device to factory condition and that would defeat Find My iPhone. But at least your data would be safe (I assume you had a passcode defined to prevent others from openning the device).

Just set up my find my Iphone app and it doesnt have me in the right roads ( im at work and it has me 3 roads away from where I am sitting at my desk) was wondering if its something I did or if I need to do something else.
