(Above like the beatles song)Two days after getting a replacement 3G phone I can't get Itunes to recognise the phone so I can back it up to get my data on the Iphone. Any recommendations. Many hours on the phone to no avail so far. Below is a diagnostic.

You can find the backup files and then copy them to a safe place if you are worrying about this.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then press Return.
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, then choose Run. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then click OK.

How did they wipe it? By using Find My iPad and performing a wipe? If so, that means they have your icloud ID and password, not a good thing.
You could try connecting it to iTunes and performing a restore from iCloud. But if they changed password, then you are out of the loop. How did they get your password in order to change it?

Since you've a Retina machine, you have flash storage. If you can get to the Recovery partition (it sounds as if that's where you are? Nonetheless, you can boot into your Recovery partition by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting).
Use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your flash storage. If it can't be repaired, call back.

I've been away from home the past year, and thus havent logged into my profile during that time on the family iMac. The other profiles on the iMac are all normal, but while my profile username and avatar were the same, when I log in none of my data is there and it's like logging onto a new profile for the first time. I have a back up of my data, however my main concern is my itunes music as for some reason when I backed it up a year ago, it didnt get most of music. I don't think that iphone4 has find my phone app installed!
The Find My iPhone app is for locating other iOS devices. The feature doesn't use the app but has to be activated in settings. You were given that option when setting up and activating the phone and had to decline it if t wasn't activated at that time.

If you can see the iCloud contacts in Outlook, you can copy them back to your PC by selecting all the contacts (click one, then press Control-A), then drag and drop the selected contacts to Contacts under My Contacts on the left sidebar of Outlook.
If you want to copy your calendar back to Outlook, select your iCloud calendar on the left sidebar of Outlook, switch to the list view (select View from the ribbon, then click Change View>List), select your events (click on a single event, then press Control-A), then control drag and drop them to Calendar under My Calendars on the left sidebar.

Were the app in your iTunes library? If not the app data in the backup has no place to go. Redownload the apps in your iTunes libaray

and then restore from backup.

If still problem that means the backup does not include the data.

It's "safe" when you use it as intended, for synchronizing Firefox data between multiple devices. Sync was not intended to be used as you tried to use it; as a backup medium or "cloud".

No, it doesn't store a clone. You would have needed to make one with either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
If the files were in your ~/Library folder then they may still be there. As I said, you can access it by
going to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library". I wouldn't think an upgrade would overwrite anything in ~/Library.
If you have a Time Machine backup you may also be able to use that to retrieve them.
