Help me hard disk of Lenovo 3000N100 0768-Dku has problem

I check my hasd disk and see it an Sata disk. But my computer driver it as an Ata drive. And now, when i set up Kaspersky antivirus, it make an problem with physic memory error. I check disk by PC doctor 5, and see smart short self test failure. Please, help me.
Lenovo 0768-DKU

First thing would do is immediately backup your data, starting with the most critical.
SMART is pretty damned dumb, actually.
It tries to guess on when a drive will fail by monitoring the rate at which sectors become unreadable.
Typical scenarios include SMART claiming a drive is about to fail, but the drive humming along for years, and SMART saying nothing while the platters grind themselves to junk.
So...your drive may fail soon - it may not.
You'd feel pretty silly though if it said it was going to fail and you did nothing.
I'm a little confused though by the  "physic memory error" you mentioned.
If you actually have a stick of bad ram, all bets are off.
I had a stick turn up bad recently on a system that had been plagued by data corruption, and I *thought* it was either a bad drive or bad controller.
Before ripping it apart and starting to swap parts, I ran memtest86 from an Ubuntu disc, and discovered the bad ram. Swapped it out and the mem problem was gone, and no *further* data corruption occurred.
However, some data damage was already done.
In that instance, I wiped the drive, restored from a known-good image, and carried on.
The problem with bad ram is that a file can easily be damaged in a way that is either undetected, or misdetected.
So....my advise would be to grab a linux disk, boot to it, and run memtest from the menu.
If that fails, power the system down until you can remove/replace the faulty memory.
If there are no memory problems, I would remove and replace the drive, putting the old (faulty) drive into an external usb enclosure for possible data recovery.

  • NEED HELP, old hard disk failed, new hard disk not detected.

My hard disk died, not working, not detected when I restart with the MacOS X DVD and attempt to reinstall.
I have bought a new hard drive, 160 GB ATA - IDE Samsung drive, and carefully replaced it following service manual instructions. All connectors have been carfully but firmly reconnected, and the new hard disk is not detected.
What can i do?? where is the problem??
Thank you very much for your help.

Do you know that the new hard drive is working? As it's new chances are it is, just asking .... do you know it's powering up? If you replug the old not working hard drive in, is it recognized? (this is where you don't put the computer back together, but just replace the hard drive and sort of close it back up, but don't use any bolts close the case). Plus you can feel or clearly hear if the drive is starting up or not.

@ortegaluis: my hard disk crashed a few days back (i have 3000 n100 and currently running the machine on a 1 gb pen drive )
was planning to buy a 320/500 GB hdd : seagate or western digital or hitachi (since hitachi was the one intially installed)
Could you please tell me, which one would be best? (it seems you have experience in the field)
Do i need to look for specs any other than these: 7200 rpm, 2.5" ?
    Thanks
PS:  all those who want to know possible behaviors of hard disks before crashes, visit http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/hitachi . Mine gave a clicking sound exactly like the one on the page. Worked for a few days before giving up. If you hear similar sounds, back up your data immediately unless you want to loose it like i did

  • HELP! Hard disk failing

    Hi
    Need help here.
my iMac's hard disk is failing! I ran disk utility and indicated a fatal hardware and ask that I backup my drive.
I am planning to buy a hard disk and run time machine. But I'm new to this. can someone provide a sep by step on what I need to do. I will have to buy an internal harddisk to replace the one in iMac too.
Once I time machined my stuff. How do I get it transferred to the new HD?
Also how do I make my hard drive a bootable drive? I am no expert in this.. please help.... SOON !

It depends on how much data you change.
My iMac has a 320gb drive and I use a 320gb external drive for backup which lasted about 4 months before filling up.
Time machine works incrementally, so let's say you have 100gb of data on your iMac, the 1st backup will be 100gb. After that, let's say you update 1gb of files everyday, Time machine would add 1gb to the current 100gb each day, so tomorrow the total would stand at 102gb, then 103gb etc etc.
Once the drive is full, it starts deleting the oldest information to enable it to continue backing up.
I would say the best approach would be to get something at least twice the size of your 'stored' data, so if you have 250gb of data on your machine, then get at least a 500gb drive to give you a few months run before it starts deleting data from the backup.

  • Need help with Hard Disk usage selection.

I am going to get a Mac Pro and I am goint to probably use Final Cut Studio and Photoshop. This is the Hard Disk setup I was thinking of:
    Bay 1:WD Raptor X 150GB - OS X and some big applications.
Bay 2:Stock 250GB - Downloads and some programs
Bay 3:750GB Seagate - Music, photos, and videos (Multimedia)
Bay 4:120GB - Scratch Disk for Final Cut Studio and Photoshop
I need recommendations especially about the scratch disk. I need to know if the scratch disk is recommended to have a specific size or speed. Also, instead of the 750GB drive, I would probably wait becaus Seagate might releases a 1TB drive.

Would be nice if we could unleash those other two SATA ports sitting unused untiil there are PCI Express controllers. And are there any drive 'kits' or something in the wings to mount two extra drives? do-able?
If you need 400GB for music, photos and video, then yes, 750GB makes sense. And you think you might want/need 1TB? Given the problems RAIDing those "super size" Seagate's and the unacceptable I/O on some drives reported by Barefeats...
Backup concerns: SATA drives in a universal case with hot-swap drive bays so you can use same SATA as you have internally, and where 750GB Seagate would be nice - and expandable. And where a FW800 interface would be acceptable and offer decent performance (maybe even Oxford 912 "RAID" FW).
For now, it might make sense temporarily to use external for one drive, and reserve the internal drive bays for things like scratch and RAID.
With SoftRAID 3.5.x and 3 x 500GB drives, you could create a stripped RAID using the outer tracks and still have non-RAID or even 2nd RAID using the remaining space.
I would not use 120GB drive for anything. 320 (or 300GB because they are affordable and fast) as the smallest density capacity (except for Raptor of course).
Two 500GB drives, or two 750's if the bugs or problems get fixed, and using those in RAID? Heck, remove the 250GB and get 3rd.

  • Help please, Hard disk issues and HPQ confusion

    Hi all,
I have a Compaq N800c EVO laptop, well 2 but thats a story. And I'm having a game with the hard drive.
Until monday my main laptop was an FIC A360, but this Compaq will be taking it's place.
So I have the N800c which came with a compaq stickered 40gig fujitsu MHS2040AT, it boots and works, OS and all. The fujitsu is ATA-100 and oem equipment in the notebook.
The FIC I'm retiring has a retail Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 60Gig hard disk. This works (OS and all) in the FIC but in the N800c nothing, just a flashing cursor on the top left of the screen. The Bios can see it, self tests ok, but won't boot it.
If set to cable select I get the same,  If i set it to device 0 it gives a non system disk error.
I thought this was strange so I've also tried 2 Fujitsu MHN2200AT 20gig drives again, no joy. Both had clean OS installs.
I flashed the system Bios up to the latest revision from the support section of the site, tried Hiachis drive config utility to hold the ATA to 66, and tried all of the above again.
I even have a second of these laptops i purchased without a hard disk and almost disgarded as i thought this error was the laptop.   Since discovering this all of this behavior is repeatable in the second laptop!
I've read about drive firmware being locked down on IBM thinkpads, is this a similar thing?  Where do i get the correct firmware to apply to my drive? to allow it to work with this laptop. Or Where do I get a Bios that isn't prohibitive for the Laptop.
I have written to Hitachi this morning, and now posting here this lunch time
    Many thanks and kind regards
    Richard

Not so, I've done this on a few machines hence wanting to do it on this one.
At initial boot up it'll discover a whole bunch of new hardware and the items it can't find will become yellow question marks in the device manager. i'm going to have a little play with one of the scrificial fujitsus later and verify either way then i'll report back. I'm fairly confident what i'm seeing is a firmware clash though as there is no logical reason the drive shouldn't load.  It should at least go through to some activity, but its almost as if the computer has asked if its in its club, then when the drive says no it refuses to continue. In the bios and hitachis hard drive utilities it tests as ok. As do the two little fujitsus.
IBM thinkpad drives are "ibm'd" in their firmware anyone know of compaq doing this?

  • Help needed Hard disk Problem

I am not very computer Savoy!. But every time I turn my laptop on it keeps freezing up on me and I get a massage that says I am having a Hard Disk Problem and that I should back up all my files before the computer crashes. And I would like to what I should do to fix this? I thought that I could reload my operating system but my computer did not come with that disk and I can't seem to find it here on this web site. Any idea's?

Without knowing specifically which model you have it's difficult to tell for sure, but most Toshiba's made in the past few years come with a Recovery Partition.  You can invoke the Recovery Process by holding down the 0 (zero) key while turning the computer on and holding it down until the Recovery Process starts.  You can also create a set of Recover Disks from the Recovery partiton by going to "Start - All Programs - Toshiba - Recovery - Recovery Disk Creator".
As for the error message about Hard Disk Problem, that could mean that the hard drive is starting to malfuncion and will soon stop functioning at all.  You need to determince what brand of hard drive your's is, go to that companies support site, download their Diagnostic Program, install it, and run the most exhaustive test to determine if it is failing or not.
And please backup you important data as soon as humanly possible as there is a good chance you will lose it forever.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Lenovo 3000 N100 0768 DKU Battery problem

Lenovo 3000 N100 0768 DKU Laptop has battery issues. The battery shows 75% & total battery power remaining @ 76%.
The battery charge does not change when connected to the system with the AC adapter. The system will only function with the AC adapter attached. The system will not function on battery alone.
Is there some type of battery re-calibration available?   My husband checked the battery with a meter that shows that it still does have power.  The battery is a Sony LION; the original one purchased with the computer.

  • Can anbody offer help recovering hard disk and OS on 13" macbook late 2008

I am new to Mac repair but a pretty skilled PC repair guy (hobby, not job).  I have a college student friend with an A-1278 13" late 2008 Macbook that would not boot.  He could't remember what happed that made it stop but I said I would look at it for him.  When I got it I   determined the power button worked and the hard drive spun bbut it would not boot - no chiem, no video.  If I helddown the power button it would shut down. I did some research on the net and was pretty well convinced there had to have been some liquid contact.  I disaaembled it completely (thanks ifixit!) and cleaned the logic board. I dired it with a blow drier on cool but let it air dry for nearly a week afterward due in part to caution and part to my schedule.  When I reassembled and tried the power but I got nothing, period.  Dissapointed, I looked up how to start without the power button (I had read about during me research).  I tried it (shorting contacts on logic board) and to my suprise it chimed and started up.  Everything seemed to work OK except the keyboard.  I moved around a bit and realized it was running a Parrallels virtual machine (which I've heard about but know nothing about).  I assumed I had simply not connected the keyboard cable completely.  I navigated with the mouse to shut down the virtual machine and then navigated to shut down completely so I could check and reseat the keyboard connector.  While it was shutting down I left the room for about 30minutes to do a chore for my loively bride.   When I returned, I reseated the cable (which was indeed not in completely) and check all of the other ribbon connectors.  Satisfied I turned it over and pressed the power button and, again to my surprise, it chimed and started.  This time however I got the rgey "Apple"  screen and the spinning wheel but it never fully booted.  I held down the power button to shut down.  I did some research again and it indicated there might be a problem with teh hard drive.  Strange but ... I checked the hard drive connector and it was fine so I tried starting again and let it go for a while.  Eventually the screen turns blue but the whell just keeps on spinning.  I shut down with the power button and did some more research.  Unfortunately I don't have the OS disk available so I tried single user boot and ran fcsd.  It reports an "invalid key" and quits afer three tries.  I am trying to get a hold of a disk but thought I'd throw this out to the experts to chew on ( or laugh at, as the case may be).
Can anybody offer a suggestion for a path forward?
    Thanks!
    Mike

Firstly, 10.4.9 won't work - Macs won't boot from an OS version earlier than the one they shipped with (hence my caveat on the Leopard versions).
Disk Warrior may well help, at least for checking the file structure; check their website for the correct version - off the top of my head 4.6 rings a faint bell, but check.
TechTool Pro 5, likewise, and that will do hardware checks too.
Either or both of those is worth having if you intend looking at more Macs.
As for booting from the SL disc, Disk Utility is accessed from the first screen after the language choice. Ignore the installer and go to Utilities in the menu bar.
Running Repair Disk won't hurt anything that isn't already broken. Just don't touch the Apply or Erase buttons
As an aside, if it came to installing from the SL disc, SL's normal installation only replaces the system files - applications, data and preference settings aren't touched, unless you erase the disc from DU first.
I wouldn't do that without the owner's informed consent though - SL needs printer driver updates that may not be available for the equipment they have, and some applications need paid upgrades (Adobe for one).

  • How to Upgrade Hard Disk on Lenovo 3000V100. Copying the IBM_Service hidden partition - solution

For anyone else who wants to upgrade their hard drive I offer the following solution.
The problem is that simply copying the C: drive over to the new hard drive doesn't work.  The new drive hangs when booting.  It turns out that Lenovo in its wisdom(?) requires that a hidden partition must be copied as well, the IBM_Service partition of 5.1G.  I tried multiple ways of copying the drive that did not work
    - Apricorn EZ copy didn't see my new drive at all - that may well be because I was working with a 2004 version - they haven't responded to my email questioning that.
    - DriveImage XML copied the C: drive with no problem, but couldn't see the hidden partition in copying mode.
    What worked?
I used my copy of Acronis True Image 11 to do the copying, making sure to keep the hidden partition the exact same size since I'd had indications in a Lenovo forum that was important.
Just boot from the CD.  You'll have to use the manual mode.
The interface is a bit unnerving because you keep having to go "back" to really go to the next step in making the partitions the size you want.  Other than that it works very well.
This worked flawlessly. The machine booted with no problems. I now have three times the disk space.

  • Lenovo b570 Hard disk

I got this computer about 3 moths ago. It was freedos and I installed windows 7 ultimate. After a month, it went off and then when I turned it back on, there was this message on the screen saying to start windows normally or to repair and reset the system. I chose the last option and couldn't get to turn the computer back on. Then, I could get the computer on, only on safe mode for some time. After that I got the hard disk exchange. Two days ago the problem came back. The computer won't turn back on. It will only work on safe mode.
Do I have to change the hard disk again?
    Someone else with this problem
What is wrong with this series?
There is no virus.  I got kaspersky .
Sorry about my grammar, I will improve one day

    Hi ana92,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! You should repair the Windows and see if it helps. Also, try running hard disk diagnosis to check if the hard disk is the culprit.
Note: Go to Device manager and check for the Hard Disk Brand. After that, download hard disk health checking tool from the respective brand's support site.

  • Will external hard disk with firewire help me to back up my laptop using time machine?

    Hi,
I have macbook pro from 2011 with 750GB hard disk and I try to back up my hard disk using time machine for the first time.
I used time machine before in the previous OSX versions but I had to format the external disk.
I have an external Western Digital hard disk with 3TB space. It has only usb connection.
When I try to backup all my data (650GB) the speed is 25GB per day, so it will take me about a month to backup my disk.
It's my work laptop, so I can't leave it for backup for more than 2-3 days.
I read a lot of forums and tried to see if the small speed is only at the beginning of the back up.
I also tried all the tricks with turning off the spotlight indexing and so on.
Nothing really helps, so my question is:
Is it going to help, if I buy an external disk with a firewire connection? Will I be able to backup my data in 2-3 days?
    Thanks,
    Arshavski Alexander

A Firewire drive would only be about twice as fast as USB 2, so you're still looking at 15 days. Something isn't right.  I'm usinge FW800, and my my 1TB backs up overnight.
Take a look here and see if anything helps: http://pondini.org/TM/D2.html

  • Help NEEDED! External Hard Disk Drive Problem!

    Dear Forum,
I am using MacBook with snow leopard and I am also using a WD Ext.HDD 500GB. Ok, I will described in detailed regarding what problem has occurred so that you guys can help me:D. Firstly, I formatted my wd hdd to hfs+j as the default format is NTFS. Then afterwards, I forgotten that hfs+j cannot support windows, thus I partition it to 2, with one hfs+j and one Fat32(formatted to ntfs when in windows), then I realised that my macbook don't have enough space, thus, I reformatted the whole hdd to one partition only, hfs+j. Now, the problem comes, when I formatted it to hfs+j, I found the free space not right, at default, the wd is 499.41GB(as seen on disk utility), but when I look at the hfs+j partition, the free space is only 499.06GB(as seen on disk utility with no files in it). Another thing, when I looked into the disk utility info of my hfs+j partition, there is 400+MB of hard disk space already taken. Then, I transferred one of my files(4.82GB) into my ext.hard disk, when the transfer is complete, I 'get info' my ext.hdd and found out that 5.26GB are taken up, but I have only transferred 4.82GB of files. So what is happening to my hard disk? Any ways to fix this problem guys?
I really need your help! I will appreciate greatly if you guys can help me, thanks!:D
    Regards
    Ala.

The odd 400MB is the hidden files put there by the system to define the file structure of the partition, plus other stuff like .Trash. It's perfectly normal and the HDD wouldn't be recognised if they weren't there.
You will see a similar situation with the internal boot drive if you compare the Drive size (leftmost item with the manufacturers designation) and that of Macintosh HD (which is the working partition). In my case this shows 640.14 GB for the drive, 639.79 GB for Macintosh HD, a difference of 350MB
This will be the same within about ± 50MB whatever drive you format in HFS+J, including pen drives.

  • Is my hard disk fried?!?

I have a 2009 imac running Snow leopard. It was running ridiculously slow and stalling out on programs like crazy this morning, I had to force shut down several programs several times (usually Firefox or Photoshop - though I did relaunch Finder once as well). Moving files even from folder to folder was painful, as was opening folders. Things had been running slowly on and off yesterday but not enough for me to have any concerns over it but when I tried to work this morning it was next to impossible as I could barely launch files or had to wait up to 10 minutes for a page to load.
I restarted several times throughout the day, still not working well. I checked for software updates on all the affected programs, all were up to date. I rebooted from CD, ran disk utility on it, it said everything was fine. I knew it wasn't fine so I started to back up my files just in case - I had two firewire backup drives daisy chained to the computer. It was having great difficulty backing up to the master backup drive, all files would copy painfully slowly. What was usually a 30 second back up took up to 2 hours if it worked at all without stalling. I have no idea what, if anything, actually got backed up. Again I started from CD and ran disk utility to fix the drive and again it said nothing was wrong.
I quit off disk utility which prompted a restart and ejected the disk. It restarted slowly but allowed me to log in my user and loaded my desktop. While launching the start up programs I have (Mail and Firefox auto start) it stalled. I could move my mouse, view the desktop but nothing else. I waited about 10 minutes to see if it would recover and when it didn't resolve and wouldn't allow me to force quit the programs it was hung up on, I hard restarted using the power button. Upon launch, I got the white screen with the question mark in the file.
I've followed every direction on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570. I can still successfully start from CD but I can't run disk utility as it isn't even recognizing that I have a hard drive. Where my hard disk is supposed to be, it has the icon and says media. It shows the total capacity as 0 bytes and that it's an unformatted drive.
I don't know what to do from here - I really need the information that is on this drive if possible as I have a work deadline looming and I have no idea if it backed up or not. I'm going to drag the back up drives to the inlaws as they have a mac and see what I do have copies of. I was also considering trying to access it in target disk mode off of her computer. Is this a bad idea?
We live in a small town and there is no local mac support. Any information as to what I can do to fix my computer and get the info off of it is greatly appreciated!!

    Greetings,
but I can't run disk utility as it isn't even recognizing that I have a hard drive. Where my hard disk is supposed to be, it has the icon and says media. It shows the total capacity as 0 bytes and that it's an unformatted drive.
If disk utility isn't showing a mounted volume like "Macintosh HD" that does suggest an issue with the drive. This could be physical, or something wrong with the format / partition table.
If you weren't maintaining regular backups like with Time Machine then your priority #1 should be to try to get the data off the drive if it is extremely important data. Any repairs you might do be it with Disk Utility or other repair software (Disk Warrior, Drive Genius, Tech Tool Pro, etc.) run the risk of making whatever data is on the drive harder to recover. Repair programs by their nature move data on the drive. If this drive is truly failed, you want to avoid making changes as much as possible so data recovery software / companies have the best chance to get the data off.
Target disk mode would certainly be my next step.
It might also be worthwhile to reset the SMC which will also reset the drive controller, just in case it is not mounting for other reasons: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If you cannot access the drive in Target disk mode then you have 3 choices:
    A. Try repairing using Disk Utility or other program and hope that the repairs are sufficient to get the drive up and running and risk moving some data in the process (which as mentioned above makes data recovery more difficult).
    B. Contact a data recovery professional.
_There are many nationwide / worldwide data recovery companies out there. Here are a few examples:
    http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com
    http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/
    http://www.totalrecall.com/
    C. Use data recovery software to attempt to extract data off the drive.
    _Here are a few examples:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
Long term the question is, is this a physical issue with the computer/drive or a software issue (formatting)?
Completely erasing the drive would be the way to tell. If you attempt to erase the drive and are unable to, this would suggest a physical issue with the drive, its connection to the logic board, or the logic board itself.
If you can erase the drive then this is probably just a software issue. Formatting of the drive broke down for "X" reason. There are many, hard shut downs, power outages, micro power surges, force quitting applications 100 times a day, etc.
Either way, maintaing regular automated backups is our safety net: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
I hope that helps and best of luck to you.
