What do you mean by "the new HDD"? What drive are you booted from, what disk are you trying to access, and what are you trying to do with it?

  • Can I partition a new macbook air hd to run lion and snow leopard?

I have a new 2011 Macbook Air and it came with Lion. I still have some mission critical programs that are not yet compatable with Lion. Can I partition the HD (I have 256GB) and dual boot with Snow Leopard? I have the Snow Leopard upgrade disk from another Mac. Will Snow Leopard work on this machine?

No. The new MBAs require Lion and will not run Snow Leopard.

  • Rapid Restore Ultra don't resize partition on new HDD

    Hi,
first as a new member,i send many thanks for both Lenovo community and Thinkpad.com Forum members for their great help in the thinkpad users world.....
Following one of the very good advices of Ajikula,i bought a new Samsung HM160HC IDE HDD to upgrade my old Hitachi 60 Gb on my R50p(1832 2ag)...
Previously ,i made a set of Recovery Media CD (19..) with Rapid Restore Ultra ...
You should know that it's the original version of RRU who comes from a previous Restore From Factory Settings, never update it..
On the other hand i run the last Bios and drivers and run XP SP3.
I putted brand new HDD (not formatted neither partitioned) instead of the old one and ran Backup Restore from the boot CD of the set i made..
All run very fine and some hours later all (OS,Programs and data)run fine in the new silent HDD.
The only problem is when i go in Windows "Disk manager" RRU install the same partitions size as they were on the old 60 G HDD,leaving 92Gb of "unalocated space" on the new 160 G HDD...
1)Should i had to format the new HDD before performing the Restore to allow Rapid Restore Ultra to resize the main partition(theHidden IBM service one still the same size obviously)
2)i read in RRU IBM doc any further partitioning lead to problems with RRU use, does that applies to this unallocated space (not already formatted)or just to the other partitions?
In other words, could i format this unallocated space, and IF YES what kind of partition could i create, without disturbing further RRU work (creatind Backups and Restore them..)
Thank you very much for your future help..!!
I apologize for my somewhat approximative english..!!
    Best regards

    Hi,
so first of all you need to understand, that RnR (Rescue and Recovery) is not an imaging tool, it is a backup tool, which means, that in the backup are multiple informations stored. With information I mean also the alocated space. Which means in reality:
    - you capture a rapid restore backup on a 60GB HDD
    - you restore it on 120GB HDD => this will create only a 60GB partition, where will be all restored
    - if you try to restore it on a 50GB HDD, then you may experience unexpected results, as the backup is expecting a 60GB HDD.
So in this case what you can do is to create a second partition from the rest, that was left from the restore.
What you can create is a NTFS Partition.
Let me know, if you need any more information.
    Cheers

  • HDD Failed, how to copy restore partition to new HDD?

    Hallo,
I have a Compaq Mini netbook, with Windows 7 Starter.
The HDD failed and it's not repairable. However, it seems that the recovery partition is OK.
I want to buy a new HDD, install the driver on the netbook and then use the recovery partition/tools in order to install windows 7 on the new PC.
So, the question is simple: How do I copy recovery partition to the new HDD?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hello s91066.
So your hard drive on your notebook has failed? If this is the case what do you mean by the "recovery partition is ok?" I doubt that this notebook has two hard drives so if you're able to see this partition your hard drive may still be working.
You'll need a set of recovery discs to restore the partitions on the new hard drive. If you're able to boot into Windows, which you probably can't with a dead hard drive, you can follow these steps if you can get into Windows.
If you can not boot into Windows you need a set of discs. You can order these directly from HP. The number for the US/Canada is 1-800-474-6836. If you're in another area you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your area's contact information.
I hope this is helpful; have a great weekend!

  • How i can install Mavericks on new HDD because my mac hdd broken

i have macbook pro A1286 hard disk damage . i buy new HDD and fix it on my mac , then how i can install Mavericks ?
i try many times but i cant finish this problem because i cant access to disk utilities or recovery mood because already the hdd is new&empty .

    Thanks

It's going to be impossible to install Mavericks unless you have a working Mavericks-USB-installer or an  "install OS X Mavericks.dmg" that YOU have downloaded from the App Store in the past.
You should use a Snow Leopard install DVD to install 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on your Mac. From there, you can use your  "install OS X Mavericks.dmg" to install Mavericks. If you don't have that, you can download and install Yosemite from the Mac App Store instead.
If you don't have either a Snow Leopard install DVD or a custom made Mavericks-installer-USB, you should call Apple and buy a Snow Leopard install DVD from them. They're still for sale.
The other option is to use another, still functioning, Mac and connect the two using a firewire cable. Then you can use Target Disk Mode to install Mavericks or Yosemite on your Mac http://support.apple.com/nl-nl/ht1661

  • Cloning windows partition for new HDD

I am getting a new HDD for my mac and have a windows partition. From searching, I know that Mac OS X recognizes this as a different HDD entirely. I want to know if there is a way I can clone my current Mac partition AND Windows 7 partition onto my new HDD

Did I miss the memo? I wasn't aware that SD or CCC could clone a Boot Camp partition. I know Disk Utility won't.
I believe CopyCatX will replicate an entire drive via bit-copy. And CloneZilla can also be used to clone the Windows volume or a whole drive. Not sure how well it does with Mac formatted volumes, but it's supposed to work. Look for them at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • Can't format my new HDD (WD3200bevt)

i bought a new internal hard drive yesterday and i found that i can't format it (i am sure that the new HDD set in my MBP corrected). i used disk utility to erase it, then says "file system formatter failed." i googled everything but, nothing. i tried to follow the instruction i googled that change the partition type to Guid, however it says again and again too("file system formatter failed."). it almost drive me crazy. i don't know how to solve it.
P.S. i find i can format it into FAT.
my HDD is WD3200BEVT. also i have a wd5000bevt, it worked beautiful.

    Hi there,
I don't have direct experience of your problem but have suggestions.
    1. Try some of the things suggested on this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1288978&start=0&tstart=0
    2. In disk utility click on the logical name of the HD in the side bar (in my case that's a long name with code for the drive and size), select this and not the partition name! then click on the partition tab. From the drop down select one partition. From options select GUID. Then the filesystem as HFS+ Journaled etc. Then click erase. Does that make any difference?
    3. Or download Ubuntu and try and re-format the disk using the installer.

  • Pls help - Thunderbird still can't recognise my new email - have followed online guides + set MX records but still can't get TB to recognise - spent over a day

    Hi,
I am trying to set up my new business email account (3rd party - netregistry from Australia) [email protected] onto my Thunderbird account.
I have new domain with wordpress exploreyogatravel.com
Trying to get new email onto Thunderbird - have set MX record for netregistry on wordpress. Have manually configured mail account on TB (pop/port/ etc) per netregistry instructions). Have spoken to netregistry on a number of occasions - they now feel it is at the TB or WP end.
TB still can't locate settings for my email account when I manually set up as following and I have wasted so much time on this.
    (incoming - pop3 - pop.exploreyogatravel.com - 995 - SSL/TLS - normal password
    outgoing - SMTP - smtp.exploreyogatravel.com - 465 - ssl/tls - normal password
username incoming - [email protected] outgoing - same)
Please help what I need to do to get this sorted.
    Regards
    Mariska

I think your latest issue will reside in your anti virus package.
Disable email scanning. The setup routine tries to connect to the server 8 ways to Sunday to establish the correct settings. The Anti virus program thinks there is mail coming, steps up to the plate and makes a total disaster out of something that was often not all the pretty anyway. To make matters worse, because of the quick fire scanning some then just decide it is malware trying to spam people and blocks it in the firewall.
Next check the firewall (particularly the pesky Norton one if installed) and ensure Thunderbird has full access to the internet. Auto is not sufficient. That is usually what got us where we are, manually fiddling with settings.

  • Can I partition a new 1Tb drive so that 500 Gb is a FAT32 drive and the other 500Gb is HSF  ?

I have a new Verbatim 1 Tb drive and I want to use half of it to act as the Hard Drive for Windows (via VMWare Fusion) and the other to be my Aperture vault. How do I do this?

You would formate the OS X partion as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID. The GUID portion is created in the Patition tab of Disk Utility. In DU can partition any drive connected to the Mac. To learn how to partition a external drive I was able to locate this article that offers step by step instructions.
    http://www.geek.com/articles/apple/how-to-partition-a-mac-hard-drive-20120416/
This will partion the portion of the EHD you want so OS X can use it. You can use Fusion to partition the other portion of the EHD for Windows use however my understanding is MS Windows will only install on internal hard drives. If you want to install Windows on an external HD then you're really on your own as it's not a supported item from Microsoft.

  • Lenovo G550 move partition to new HDD (including one key recovery)

    Hi guys.
    I have a Lenovo G550 laptop.
I am looking to change out the existing stock HDD with a new SSD drive (from what I understand from other Lenovo support services, it is SATA II compatible (see http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/Lenovo-G550-HDD-SATA-I-or-SATA-II/ta-p/692351)...
Firstly. Is it possible to change the stock HDD with an SSD drive? I have a budget of about $100 AUD so it would only be a 60-120gb HDD. Would 60gb be enough (I really only need about 30gb of space on the c: drive), or would I need to look at the 120gb option.
Secondly, is there any way of migrating the entire contents of the existing HDD to the SSD HDD?
I have the ability to connect them both externally, and a spare blank 1TB HDD that I can use in the interim if needs be.
Ultimately I would like the SSD drive to have the one key boot partition and the original Windows on it. I don't mind loosing all my programs and files - I can back them up and install them in my leisure.
To complicate matters, my DVD drive isn't working (but I do have an external DVD drive I may be able to use, even possibly booting from. But not 100% sure if I can boot from it!)
And to further complicate matters, the laptop has recieved quite a bit of use, so the sticker with the product key number has been worm off. Argh!
Thank-you in advance for the assistance.
    Cheers,
    Dale.

Just done this with a G770.
Simply back up all the HD with Acronis or something to your 1TB disk. Not sure how you would connect this. USB would be best.
Exchange the laptop HD for the SSD
Boot Acronis with the CD and Restore your backup.
    Works fine.
You'll have to check the bios to see if you can boot from Ext DVD.

  • MacBook can't see my new HDD

    Hello,
I'm having some trouble with my HDD replacement.
I used to have a Samsung 250GB (5400rpm, M5S2), it worked perfectly until he decided to die. I choose to replace it with a similar drive : Samsung 250GB (7200rpm, MP2). BUT, the drive utility and the macos installer don't see it when he is plugged inside the macbook.
I tried in a USB case, it works perfectly : I was able to see it and create partitions.
Then I plugged it back inside, but same problem, my laptop don't see the whole drive
Does anyone have seen this problem before ?
Note : The drive is active when plugged inside, I can feel his plates spinning.
Note 2 : sorry for my Poor english

Don't know how, don't know why but :
I tried my dad's HDD in the MacBook (Same model : Samsung 250Gb, MP2, 7200rpm), it worked.
And we tried my HDD in my dad's laptop, and it worked too ... so we switched our drives.
I'm really lost here, we bougth our same drives together, one works on both laptop, and the other one only works on my dad's laptop !
    Thank you everyone.

  • How many copies of 10.2.8 can I have on one HDD? To partition or not to ...

    Hi,
I hope that this makes sense to those who read it. If, it doesn't then, please - someone say so. In case some of you recognize my monicker it has been a good while since I visited and asked for help.
Kappy, I didn't understand everything - had some health issues thus, I couldn't followup?
I have finally installed my Seagate internal, thus my return visit.
I have just installed a Seagate Barracuda 7200, 120 GB HDD. I've made it my master drive. I've partitioned it into four parts. 1) for OS 10.2, 2) for 10.3, 3) for 10.4 and 4) for OS 9. I have not yet put it to use. I made my original Deskstar 40GB the slave, it has three partitions. 1) for 10.2, 2) for OS 9 and legacy 3rd party apps and 3) for photos and videos. I also have an Maxtor One-Touch II External 300 GB FW for backup. Long story - it has 4 partitions, 1) 10.2, 2) 10.3 and .4, 3) for video and photo storage and 4) for OS 9.
    I have several questions.
    1) How many copies of OS 10.2.8 can I have on any one drive - is my Seagate and my Deskstar now considered to be one drive?
1b) Can I have OS 10.2.8 (on both? of them)?
1c) Can I have 10.2.8 on that/both of those drives without causing conflicts or any other problems?
    2) I've been reading through the discussions to see if I could find an answer to any of these questions. What I did find was several different topics that include references about not partitioning new drives.
2a) What are the advantages to partitioning and what are the potential problems/disadvantages created by partitioning a new HDD?
2b) Isn't it necessary to partition a HDD if I'm going to have 10.2, 10.3(maybe), 10.4 and OS 9 all on the same HDD?
2c) Aren't there going to be conflicts especially because of OS 9 and 10.4 being on the same partition?
I will appreciate all replies, corrections, suggestions and requests for clarifications and/or request for additional info.
    Thanks,
    J Ivan

You cannot have more than one copy of OS X on a single volume (partition), but you can install any number of versions of OS X on separate volumes (partitions.)
    2) I've been reading through the discussions to see if I could find an answer to any of these questions. What I did find was several different topics that include references about not partitioning new drives.
2a) What are the advantages to partitioning and what are the potential problems/disadvantages created by partitioning a new HDD?
There are no inherent advantages to partitioning in general except that it may provide a convenient means for organization. However, if you desire to install multiple operating systems, partitioning is necessary to keep each OS separate and to enable you to use OPTION booting. The exception to this is installing OS X and OS 9 on the same volume.
2b) Isn't it necessary to partition a HDD if I'm going to have 10.2, 10.3(maybe), 10.4 and OS 9 all on the same HDD?
    Yes. See previous answers.
2c) Aren't there going to be conflicts especially because of OS 9 and 10.4 being on the same partition?
No. And there would be no problems having OS 9 and 10.4 on the same volume. If they are on the same volume you simple cannot use OPTION booting to switch between them.
