  • HELP!! powerbook stuck on grey screen, not able to boot safe or single user

hey, i need some help, ive searched the forums the best i could, im experianced at fixing pc's but this has been my first mac in awhile, a friend of mine brought his 12" powerbook g4 to me, he says whenever he turns is on its stays stuck on the first screen where you see a grey apple and it shows a spinning wheel loading, he said hes even left it on overnight and it still stays there, he said he might have gotten a virus, cause he said he was searching **** last time it worked =P (hey i dont judge, every man has to find someway to reveive the "pressure")
so anyway, i dont have alot of his specs, not even the exact o/s # i just know he told me it osx 10.4, so i did some research and found some ways to TRY and fix it, i tried safe mode (shift) and single user mode (cmd+s) and even verbose mode(cmd+v) when booting up the powerbook, but alas, none have worked, safe mode doesnt do anything, just the same grey screen, and single and verbose mode both halts after the cmd screen goes through a few lines.
he doesnt have any software for his powerbook, they are all at home, which is about 900 kms away (or 559.26 miles to the non-metric ppl out there) so im working with nothing but my brain and the net, which isnt much, does anybody have any suggestions, maybe some third party software that would help, just point me in the right direction, or better yet, explain it to me like i was an infant, im not used to macs, but they intrigue. at least for now, i dont want to be put off just from this one little incident.
thanks to anyone who offers help, its my first time EVER asking for it in any forum.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There's a couple of things I can think of that may be the problem. Based upon what you have described, the first is a hard drive failure.
A couple of ways to check for this is to use the PowerBook's original installer disc (which you don't currently have access to), or perhaps a Mac OS X Tiger installation disc, to restart from and then use Disk Utility to perform a Repair Disk. Restarting from CD or DVD is performed by pressing the 'C' key during startup with the disc in the PB.
Another way to check is to see if the drive can be accessed via FireWire Target Disk Mode.
A second possibility is that there may be a directory corruption on the drive. If so, then DiskWarrior is the best option.
Another possibility is to take the PB in to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider for them to diagnose.

  • Help please. Ipad2 stuck in portrait rotation

Hi. I got an ipad2 for Christmas. It works fine, kids love it etc but since Tuesday it has been stuck in the portrait orientation. I find it easier to work landscape and I player is much better landscape.
I have tried the suggestions I've already found on here. The slide switch was on mute, changed it to screen position and unlocked screen and it is now back to mute. Have double clicked the home button and the circle icon at the far side is also unlocked. There is no locked icon on the screen. Have put to sleep and have held lock and home button down to reset. None of it works.
    Any help gratefully received.
    Thanks

There's a fairly standard sequence of recommended steps to run through when an app and/or the iPad itself isn't working as it should. They're laid out in the Troubleshooting section of your User's Manual and have been extensively quoted in these and other forums.
In a case like yours I'd start by powering down, completely, using the red slider, and then after essentially no delay booting it back up again. I'd actually expect that to work but, if it didn't, I'd next try a Reset.
Your text hints that you might have tried that already but, given that you didn't use the term and also didn't describe what you actually did, for a Reset (also Hard Reset, System Reset, etc.) you basically
                   a. Press & hold both the Home and the Sleep/Wake buttons, ignoring the appearanceof the red Power Off slider bar, until
                   b. It disappears and is replaced by the white Apple logo, at which point the buttons are released and you allow a normal powerup sequence to continue.
Still not working? Steps after that are limited: You have to re-load the OS and if that doesn't work then you're talking to Apple about repairs or replacements.

It sounds to me like you either got defective parts or otherwise did not make the repair correctly. We cannot help  with self-repairs here, the iPhone officially not user servicable, but you can ask for advice in the forums on ifixit.com, a site which is dedicated to those attempting their own repairs.

  • HELP!!  iPhone stuck in Recovery Mode after trying to update today w/new OS

Ok my phone is stuck in recovery mode, Ive already restarted my computer & tried to shut down itunes & start it back up, it gets almost done with the restore verification and then it gives me a 1013 or something
    what to do?!

Don't know if this will help but when I updated to 4.0.2 my phone gave me an error and bricked.
I made a new user on my computer, installed itunes and then was able to update my phone without it erroring. Once I had a working phone I went back to the old user and updated my phone with all of the information that was there before. I lost a few things but had a working phone.
Since then I have not had a problem with updating it in the old user. You might see if it will help with you all.

  • Please Help. I'm stuck

I have been stuck on the same problem for 8 hours, and I just cannot figure it out. Any help would greatly be appreciated. I am using the Against the clock textbook for CS4. It says to place the object at location x:0 y:50, but I have to place it at x:0 y:-70 to have it appear where it is supposed to. All the other objects are in the correct locations as far as the x/y axis.
What in the world would cause an object to display in the wrong spot? The center point is where it is suppose to be on the object which is a movie_clip.
I am totally baffled, and this is very frustrating. I was planning on buying CS5, but I can't even use CS4 correctly, lol /

Sounds like the registration point has been, or needs to be moved. There is a registration point "+" and a pivit point "o" other than that I can't think og a reason it would do that unless it is a mosprint in the book.
    Good Luck

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The songs are grayed out in iTunes because the iPod is set to automatically update. That is normal.
As for the songs skipping and not playing, that is not.
    Try resetting your iPod...

  • Please help, my iPhone is stuck after trying to upgrade to 2.1

I connected to iTunes and it was updating my iPhone 3G to the newest firmware. Then there was an "Unknown Error" and my iPhone is stuck on the black screen with the silver apple logo with the spinning circle at the bottom loading something. I restarted iTunes, my computer, disconnected from USB port and it is still stuck. iTunes doesn't even recognize my phone being plugged in, I can't access it at all or do anything with it... Help!

I read everydaytech's post and found the answer through another user. Thanks for your time.

  • HELP! Iphone 5 STUCK IN RECOVERY SCREEN!

last night my iphone 5 (6.1.2) randomly froze, it then wouldnt get past the apple logo, so i connected it to my laptop to Restore it (Which Failed) "Unknown Error (-1)" now my iphone is stuck on the recovery logo and doesnt move. I tried disabling the virus protector, deleting host files etc, but nothing seems to work, everytime i attempt to restore it, it gives me the same message.    I dont mind deleting my files etc, but i would rather fix my iphone asap than to take it into an apple store (45min drive) Please help.    Many Thanks...
    Danny

ive tried on 2 seperate computers, this is definently a hardware problem im guessing, ive booked an appointment with a genius, lets see what they have to say about it.
Before this message came the phone would randomly crash anyways.
    Thanks for your reply though.

  • Please can somebody help- my iPhone is stuck in a loop after downloading IS6.1

Hi, wondering if anybody can help please
I upgraded my phone to IS6.1 - please note that I have always stuck to apples software and never tried to jailbreak it
On sat the phone just switched off despite having 20% battery left and wouldn't switch back on
When I plugged it into the mains the apple logo appeared after 3 mins and then displays a grey screen with IS06 displayed, I then slid the slider bar across and entered by password. This then displayed the docking sign - it wanted to connect to iTunes. I unplugged the iPhone to connect to my PC and the phone died again.
When I connect to the PC it never fires up. It displays the apple logo for 5secs and then switches off for 3 secs and continues in a loop.
I have tried charging for a day, replaced the battery (displays 100% full) and still the same thing happens time and time again
I have held the power and home button switch on and off and makes no difference
I have also tried holding the power button, plugging the phone into the PCM  and then pressing the home button in hope that the iTunes docking sign would appear, but nothing
Convinced this is a software issue
The phone is out of warranty
    Does anybody have any ideas.
    Loosing the will to live!
    Thanks in advance

I will be forever grateful for any help I can get to just bring my phone back to its pre-update state.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately, if you are in Recovery Mode then all your data is already gone.
You need to connect to iTunes to restore iOS then restore from your latest iTunes or iCloud backup.
