Help me lift myself up from Tiger 10.4.11 to Lion

I want to upgrade from 10.4.11 to Lion.  I have looked at past threads on this topic, but I am still unclear on a couple of points:
- Given the specifications below, my understanding is that my machine can entertain Lion, but that the new operating system may run slowly (is that right?)
  Model Name: MacBook
  Model Identifier: MacBook1,1
  Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
  Processor Speed: 1.83 GHz
  Number Of Processors: 1
  Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
  Memory: 512 MB
  Bus Speed: 667 MHz
- Am I correct that I first need to upgrade to snow leopard?  And if so, am I correct that this is something I can do from home, online?
- From there, is it true that I could just purchase and set up lion (but at the risk losing everything if I don't back up files first)?
Thank you so much for your help in getting me out of the dark ages.

You can only upgrade to Snow Leopard. Lion requires a Core 2 Duo processor which your computer does not have. To upgrade you would need to purchase a Snow Leopard retail DVD. You would also need more RAM because Snow Leopard requires a minimum of 1 GB. I would suggest you upgrade the RAM to the max for your model which would be 2 GBs.

  • From Tiger to Leopard (on to Lion)

Leaving the PBG4 Ti for MBA. Can't move all the applications to Lion from Tiger so I upgraded to 10.5.1 using Archive and Install (saving previous system).
Have repaired Permissions using Disk Utility 11.0 (252).
Installed Combo update 10.5.8 after repairing 10.5.1 (initial install).
Preferences/Print&Fax has dropped all my printers. I can find the printer files in /Users/username/Library/Printers and all the apps for each printer is shown. Put any print dialogue box lists no printers.
Where do I need to move these files to be able to use them.
Also, Yojimbo 1.5.2 has lost all the data contained within each entry. Not sure how to solve this issue.
Thanks for all solutions, ideas, pointers and links.

    Thanks Kappy,
I'm trying to avoid the long (sometimes confusing) process of adding printers that are wired, networked and wifi. Since I know where the existing printer apps are, and they seem to be in the correct place (current user/library/printers) I'm puzzled why the don't show up in preferences or any printer dialogue.
The issue with Yojimbo is a much sticker and more troubling issue. Lots of data that I can't re-enter.

  • Help! Snow Leopard install (from Tiger) problems, Email, Printer, internet connections, etc.

Hi late, but done I just installed Snow Leopard, in hopes of all being better, like SL's ablity to send attachments as "Windows Friendly", better apps, etc.
Well, right away, after installing SL, iLife, & iWork there are problems! I also did the Updates right after.
First, my Address book was totally BLANK - including birthdays of grandkids, used in Birthday Widget! This despite that in Mail, "Previous Recipents" shows those ones "in my address book" & those not in it. But when I click on those I want in my email box ... they're not there, even my daughters!
Q - SO, how do I get this data back in, other than making new cards & groups ... already done in Tiger?
Also, I tried to send an attachment, Windows friendly" box was checked, but saw somewhere I have to "contact" my server? Why? (Verizon, which hates Apple, & caused many other problems since I got this!)
Second, my Printer, though shown as the default (Epson CX 6000) fails to print ... though all is connected properly. When I try to look for tutorials, etc on line, Safari bumped me from one negligible page to another, none of which I was looking for. Then when asking for "immediate tech help" I was disconnected, because Safari showed I wasn't connected to the net!!!
Third, How come the new Safari dosn't have a box where I can type in a URL to go to? seems awful weird!
Fourth, System Preferences, in Tiger too, unlocks various item pages, though I've locked them? also weird.
I'm off to the Apple store tomorrow, but IF anyone can help with any of these now ... you'd be an angel!
    Kathy LPV

If you did not repair permissions and restarted your computer after the installations do so now.
Check Epson's driver download website.  You probably need to update the drivers to work in Snow Leopard.  Please post back the results.

  • How can I upgrade from tiger 10.4.11 to Lion?

i have a Macbook and its running tiger 10.4.11, how can i upgrade it to Mac os x lion ?

You have to check to see your MacBook meets the hardware requirements: at least a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7, or Xeon processor, 2 Gb memory, though 4 GB is much better and at least 7 GB free hard drive space.
Thhen you need to buy Snow Leopard, 10.6, and install and upgrade to at least 10.6.6, then purchase from the app store Lion, 10.7 and install.

  • Upgrading from Tiger Server (10.4) to Lion?

I have an Apple Xserve (Dual 2.66 GHz Xeon proccessors, currently running Tiger Server, 10.4) I'm hoping to upgrade to Lion. The server is used at a non-profit community center so we've had to pass on the last few upgrades (Leopard, Snow Leopard) given the price tags (~$500), but since Lion server was announced at only $50, I've been thinking about trying to upgrade it. From what I've read, this $50 copy is good for a full, clean install, and not just an upgrade-only version. Is that true?
So here's the real question; Can I upgrade straight from server 10.4 to server 10.7?
According to the Step 1 here (http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/how-to-buy/), I first need to upgrade to the latest version of Snow Leopard, but no way will I pay $500 for it. What are my options?
What happens if I install a standard (non-server) version of Snow Leopard on the server, then try to upgrade from there? Will I lose all server functionality? My assumption would be that this would result in upgrading most of my non-server applications, while leaving me with the 10.4 versions of all the server/administrator applications. Is this at all correct? Or do I lose all server functionality by using a standard user disc?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated. We're looking at spending several thousand dollars on an entirely new server, but if we can salvage this one for $50, it would be a no-brainer. Thanks!

Hello, bambe009, and welcome to the forums,
Because it hasn't actually shipped yet any answers here are speculation and nothing is actually known for certain.
That being said it does appear that the only means of distribution will be via the App Store (with some 'sort of' exemptions for large institutional and educational buyers) so some form of Leopard appears it will be necessary.
It may be possible that your client Leopard to Lion Server may very well work (there's nothing to stop you from installing client Leopard on the Xserve) but the obvious downside of this is that you will need to recreate all your services and accounts etc from scratch in Lion. There is a upgrade/migration path for going from 10.4 to either 10.5 or 10.6 that updates your old services and accounts from one server set-up to the new one. I speculate that Lion will have a similar system to move from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server and assuming it does you would lose this moving from the client version to server.
In addition it seems that the Lion Server "add-on" is essentially $50 upgrade to the product itself making the total cost more like $80 total, but still distinctly less than before.
Again - this is several layers of speculation about a product that does not exist yet so several large grains of salt should be taken with this.
    My $.02,

  • Help! Should i upgrade from SL 10.6.8 to Lion OS-X

    Hello
I am a MacBook user and need  valuable advice regarding whether i should go for Lion OS X from Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Currently I am using White-MacBook 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB Ram, NVIDA GeForce 9400 M running Snow Leopard. I am very much happy with the kind of performance i get with my existing system, and more excited in availing Lion OS X, but a bit confused and has been bothering me from the day Lion OS X came into existences.
If i migrate to Lion OS X will the throughput of my existing system come down.
I am now in the process of getting the system upgrade with 4 GB and also getting the Magic TrackPad for exploiting the use of gesture to tis maximum. But as pointed out earlier, in-spite of doing all the hardware upgrading, i am worried that existing performance of my system might slow-down as i review the strength of the new MacBook Pro / Air.
Can you please give me your advice regarding this
    With kind regards
    JMohan

    Hello Sig
The way you state your remake to me is awfully rude. In the first place if you are arguing with the concept of 'out-dated... 2.26 MB which is not correct - MBP so on stuff.
Listen to me i am using White-MacBook 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB Ram, NVIDA GeForce 9400 M running Snow Leopard purchased by Dec 2010 which is only 1 yrs n 7 months old and chaning the system every now and then is not a vialble option, you normally use the system for 5 years and then go for the new one.
Then why should Apple provide an upgrade platform for those users running Snow Leopard and even those this the Leopad version. I cant understand things froom your perspective something like switching over new ones as soon as one comes in the market. Apple take care of its consumer in a friends way by giving so many value added services.
I am a Core Java Developer specilized with Swing applciation, once a new version come in Java and with therie IDE they don't advice your to throw aways the current system. Then while doing my masters at University of Westminser, UK most of the people keeps their electoric gadgets for a very long span of time as the saying go 'Old is Gold'  and i have never seen them buying new ones just for the sake of it as you spite it out. Above all I have seen most of the affluent people at UK using their oldest iPod.
I am not trying to change your opinon lets it be like that as as far as your are concerned and  lets agree to dis-agree, blaming the system or tools is not a good thing.
One more thing negative argument is just a waste of time and i don't have the time for it as time is very precious and lets stop communicating with no heated or hard feelings.
    regards JMohan

  • Migrate from Tiger (10.4) server to Lion server

I have a Tiger (10.4) server that I would like to retire and upgrade to a Lion server. Does anyone know of any documentation on how I can migrate user data and mail to the new Lion server?

Apple's official documentation is available here http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/resources/documentation.html the first choice is specifically about migrating.
You might also find this article useful, see http://www.macresearch.org/tutorial-backup-your-open-directory-server-using-laun chd and also my previous post on a similar topic which you can read here https://discussions.apple.com/message/16430995#16430995

  • Help - upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard AND new larger hard drive, MBP

    Howdy!
My iPhone has finally demanded that I upgrade my MBP from Tiger. And as if by coincidence, my now puny 100GB internal drive is packed full with less than a gig free most of the time. (10% free is the MINIMUM free allowance, I know!!) I run old copies of Adobe CS2, Quark, Quickbooks, Microsoft Office... would love to keep them working without purchasing upgrades, but probably isn't a realistic hope. None of it is mission critical at this point.
So I've purchased the $29 Snow Leopard DVD (from a reseller - it says CPU Drop-In DVD Version 10.6 on the disk), and a new 750GB internal drive (same reseller - The drive is a 2.5" SATA 5400RPM 8MB-Buffer Hard Drive (9MM Slim) (RoHS Green Friendly)), to get with the times.
    My other resources include:
    - two 1TB LaCie external drives with FW and USB2 ports
    - one other LaCie external drive - I think 360GB?
    - Retrospect 5.0 (most of my backups are encrypted Retrospect files on those three LaCie external drives, but there's some room on them)
    - a $22 USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE adapter with AC power, to access whatever laptop drive might be without an enclosure temporarily
    - a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner software
    - I just ordered an upgrade to my ancient (OS9) copy of DiskWarrior
    - A monster UPS battery backup and line conditioner that everything plugs into for this process
It has been a long time since I've DIY'd any undertaking this complex, and I'm looking for advice on what to do first, how to go about this.
    Here's my setup:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.2f10
I'm guessing I should do it like this, PLEASE EDIT or make suggestions or tell me what I forgot to do before I do it!!
    1. Back up everything to at least two external locations! Also, make a bootable copy of my current internal drive in its own volume, to at least one external drive that is formatted in HFS+ GUID partition style, with Carbon Copy Cloner (would Retrospect work well for this instead?).
    2. Free up at least 20GB on the current internal drive (100GB). Hopefully 30GB.
    3. Run Disk Utility on the current internal drive. Fix any problems. (Should I hit it with DiskWarrior instead?)
    4. Format the new 750GB drive to HFS+, GUID partitions. (How long will that take? Can I do it with the USB-SATA cable adapter, sitting on my desk, or does it have to be in an enclosure? The adapter has AC power)
    5. Run Disk Utility (or DiskWarrior?) on the new internal drive in its temporarily external position. Fix any problems.
    6. Boot off the Snow Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD and install onto both drives. (Will this version of the DVD I have wipe all files when it installs to a disk???)
    7. See how they run. Boot off the old 100GB internal drive, boot off the new to-be-internal 750GB drive. Panic if it's not going well.
    8. If the current internal 100GB drive is rocking Snow Leopard and my familiar files and apps seem somewhat functional, use Carbon Copy Cloner to recreate the volume on the new larger drive. Then swap the drives physically. (Links to good step-by-step instructions on this part would be much appreciated here!!)
    9. If the Snow Leopard DVD overwrote or snuffed out my familiar files and apps on the old internal drive, sigh deeply, then swap the drives physically. Use CCC (or Retrospect? or Migration Assistant?) to fetch my junk from the old internal drive's backup and plunk it on the new bigger internal drive (now installed).
    10. See how it runs. Shake my fist at the sky over the planned obsolescence of technology paired with the seductive power of my iPhone. Grumpily upgrade the software that I actually create income with.
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
    Thanks!

Howdy slowpoke43, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
LOL, if your faking it you're the best!
    1. Yes, absolutely... no CCC would be best in my experience/opinion.
    2. Yes, the more he better... Free Space is no longer our Free Space, but OSX's.
    3. Indeed, & if you have the correct version of DW, do that.
    4. Yes, not long, A/C power is great.
    How to format your disks...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/partitioningtiger.html
(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html
    6. Yes, boot off the 10.6 DVD, & no Snow Leopard does by default what we used to call an Archive & Install, saves & updates all your info, APPs, Music, etc., it may quarantine a few things or not but will tell you.
    7. Absolutely, but Panic won't be needed with your great preparation & Bootable Backups!
    8. Not quite sure I understand, but run SL for a few days before you do anything.
    9. Yeah, but again with you doing everything right from the gitgo, I can't picture that happening.
    10. Yes indeed, the hangup with yours is that it only holds 2GB of RAM... a pain in 10.5 & up IME.
Again let me say... GONGRATS, I've never ever seen anybody so well prepared & informed despite your diffidence!

  • Just updated my mac from Tiger to Mountain Lion. Loaded Photoshop elements 11 (brand new in the box) and when I try to start it - it comes up saying - Licensing for the product has stopped working contact for help.

I just updated my mac from Tiger to Mountain Lion.  wiped the computer clean and started fresh Loaded Photoshop elements 11 (brand new in the box) and when I try to start it - it comes up saying - Licensing for the product has stopped working contact for help. in Looking for help I was directed here. what do I do?

I don't know enough to not follow directions. I bought the software brand new in a sealed from factory box. Had it sitting around until - last week when I deleted flash on my computer and had to upgrade to the new OSX. Mountain Lion doesn't use iPhoto - so I had to go with something else. Since I already had this new - unopened package  I opened it up. Shut down all running programs - inserted the disk and followed all the directions for installation.  Still it didn't work.
I have now uninstalled it (the proper way) and am going to try again.
    I appreciate your responses.
    Thank you!
If this doesn't work - I am going to just buy Lightroom.

  • HELP! HOW DO I KEEP LOGIC WHEN UPGRADING FROM TIGER TO SNOW LEOPARD!

So I use a later macbook but have another slightly older one (got it in 2007) that kinda kicked the bucket. I'm now able to use it again (with a new setup). I have Logic express (an older version) but the macbook is running that last version of tiger before leopard. I want to upgrade to snow leopard (which i've learned I can from tiger directly for the low price) but I don't want to lose logic since I payed for it and don't have the install discs anymore.
I don't mind getting rid of everything else but I want to keep the actual program on the comp and just run it in SL. What specifically do I have to do (as far as backing up and all that) to CLEANLY upgrade from tiger to SL but keep logic? I'll have an external HD by the time I'm ready so keep that in consideration.

I have never used Logic Express so I can't help you but if you to the Logic Express Forum and repost over there you might be able to find someone who knows about Logic Express to help you.

  • I am upgrading from Tiger to SL in a MCBPro with 2 gb ram and an intel chip and I get the following notice:  Installation failed.... THE INSTALLER COULD NOT COPY THE NCESSARY SUPPORT FILES. Any help is apprciated

I am upgrading from Tiger to SL in a MCBPro with 2 gb ram and an intel chip and I get the following notice:  Installation failed.... THE INSTALLER COULD NOT COPY THE NCESSARY SUPPORT FILES. Any help is appreciated...

Yes.   I've found that works best.  Especially if the drive is external, since external connections are typically slower, and Spotlight loves to eat up space going back and forth.   Time Machine will eat up as much space as it can, and typically needs drives at least twice the size of the original hard drive that is being backed up, if being backed up in full.   So unfortunately there is a lot of empty space that is needed for smooth operation.

  • I updated OS from tiger to lion.. my Dvd not functioning .. HELP--!!!

Recently i updated to os lion and after i di that my dvd drive stop functioning... anyone help please... i read it might be a software problem.. anyone knows what to do???? Thanks in advance.....

One of the reasons a brody and I are asking about "how you obtained Lion" is that you need to have the App Store in order to download it.  The App Store is only available in Snow Leopard.  The title of your thread states "I updated OS from Tiger to Lion".  There is no way to download Lion from within Tiger (or Leopard for that matter).  If you obtained Lion via other means, you may have an early build which may exhibit problems not found in the released version.
When you say your DVD drive is not working... Is it with one specific DVD, or have you tried other DVDs and they are also not working?
It sounds as though you have successfully installed Lion, but now your DVD drive is having problems.  Do you currently have Lion installed and working?

  • Help: Boot from Tiger partition

Some odd issues on PowerMac Quad running 10.5.1. Any help/advice gratefully received.
Two partitions on the primary drive: Alpha and Tiger-Boot. Alpha is the first partition and is the Leopard boot partition. Tiger-Boot is the second partition - 90Gb - and was cloned from the original Tiger 10.4.11 boot partition before Leopard.
    1. SysPref. Startup drives listed as Alpha 10.5.1 and Tiger-Boot 10.4.11.
Choosing Tiger-Boot and restarting doesn't boot from Tiger-Boot but reverts to Alpha. ???
    2. Startup holding down <Option> key. Internal Alpha and Tiger-Boot listed but Tiger-Boot cannot be chosen.
    3. Startup holding down <Option> key. Internal Alpha and Tiger-Boot listed but not the external drive .... PowerMac refuses to recognize drive as a boot drive but an Intel Mac does. Test was using so this may be the issue here.
    4. Decided to reboot from the Tiger Install DVD. Kernel Panic on the gray Apple logo screen just before the rotating spokes logo appears. Completely reproducible even after reseting PRAM (have to go into open Firmware to eject the DVD).
Any thoughts before I spend time on telephone w/Apple?
    Thank you.

"...PowerMac refuses to recognize drive as a boot drive but an Intel Mac does..."
USB drive? PPC Macs cannot boot from USB drives regardless of the OS. Also, if the partition "scheme" is not correct, you might not be able to boot any Mac. A PPC Mac needs an "APM" partition and an Intel Mac needs a "GUID" partition. AFAIK, you cannot have both on the same drive.

  • I want to upgrade from Tiger 10.5 to Lion. I need to install the snow leopard first but they stoped shipping it to Greece. How do I get it? Please help.

    Hello guys!
I am facing a big problem.  I need to upgrade from OS X 10.5 to Lion BUT I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. They have stoped shipping to Greece and I am not able to find it anywhere (even Amazon does not ship this product here!!!) What I am supposed to do? Please help me.

Clone backup your hard drive at least twice*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Erase and install Lion from the USB Flash Drive version that's available on the online store.
Use the Migration Assistant to import the data, if you are certain everything is compatible with Lion.  Read this user tip to determine if it might be incompatible:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465
If you have any PowerPC (Rosetta) Applications, you may have to manually import the data from the backup:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
And then find the applications that are equivalent to them that are Lion compatible.

  • Upgrade from Tiger (g4 ibook) to leopard/ snow leopard? Please help!

I know a fairly knowledgeable when it comes to the lovely apple mac, but i am getting a little lost in a load of jargon on forums about whether you can update the software on a G4 ibook from Tiger (10.4.11) to something more recent (leopard/snow) which supports iLife '09.
The ibook G4 is an old laptop and I also have a Macbook which I leave at the office which runs off leopard. Can I t-boot and upgrade my software on my old G4?
If so, step by step dummy instructions would be soooo fantastic, if anyone would be kind enough to break it down for me
    hope someone can help

So when you say "verify" what are you referring to?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
There's also a Verify button there, but may as well Repair, which verifies also.
Do you have a referral for obtaining new disc at reasonable price for this procedure or what I should expect to pay? Or just hunt?
If apple still has it, $129, if hunting, make sure it's not a Gray machine specific Disc, which are all Intel only also.
If Apple, you have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it!
