2) what is the Macintosh HD thing?? What does it does?
3) which place would you recommed to save my file on the Mac or the Macintosh HD???
Thank a lot!!

Hi Jwong93,
Welcome to Mac.
Question 2: The Macintosh HD is the same as Windows My Computer.
Also, you can use the Finder icon on the Dock (happy face). The difference is when you click on the Macintosh HD, Finder opens to that drive. Clicking the Finder in the Dock takes you to your home folder (house icon).
Double click the Macintosh HH to reveal its contents, close it, then click the Finder in the Dock.
Cordially,
RicD

  • Help! New to Mac - compatability with DVI and JVC HDTV

Hope someone can help. I'm new to mac and have just bought a mac mini and a JVC LT32DS HDTV to use as a media centre. I've scanned through the hundreds of postings on the DVI problem with the mac and would like an idiots guide (literally!)as how to set the mini to work with the JVC TV.
Following the advice I've got the two working witha VGA connection but once I use the DVI/HDMI (profigold)cable the screen is not stable and keeps flashing in and out view. I've tried various resolution settings but get no stability. I've read about Switch Res X but don't really know if this is the right way to go.

I went to "Mediamarkt" and tried two Philips HDTVs
    1) 26PF5320
    2) 26PF9320
TV 1) had no problem accepting the DVI signal from the mini at all the native resolutions I tried (no extra software). TV 2) -- originally my favoured one -- had a barely noticeable overscan on the menubar.
So I bought the 26PF5320: a bit cheaper but also higher native resolution.
So it pays to compare even similar models. Retailers will understand the situation. However, it's important to go on a slow day -- not on Saturday -- and maybe hurry up before Christmas. Understandably they don't want to spend too much time on demonstrations when the store is full of potential customers.
The young man from the store was very impressed with the mini. Less impressed with Quicktime and that you have to pay to get a full-screen video. But that's another story.
I was able to carry the TV and the mini (the latter in a backpack) from the store to the tram and then from the tram stop to home. Just two year ago this would have been science-fiction.
I will try to collect more data on HDTV/mini matches and mismatches and maybe put it in an ASCII table for a start.

  • HELP!  New to MAC and I inserted a mini DVD!!!

I didn't know that mini DVD's couldn't be inserted into my Mac Pro and well---I just learned. Not only is this a brand new laptop, but the DVD is the only surviving copy of our trip to Disney. Is there any way I can get the mini dvd out without screwing up the laptop????

I would highly recommend taking it to the Apple Store for repair. It probably will cost some money, but much less than a replacement MBP if you try to do it yourself and end up breaking it. I'm sure they can help you.

  • HELP! NEW TO MAC SERVER MAIL

Call me a dumb but I am new to our Snow Leopard Server software coming from a Windows server. I have watched tutorials at Lynda.com and went through manuals but don't understand how to set up our client mail. We are confused with the instructions because the Mac server allows you to set up "user mail" for you own company.
We are looking to set up a bunch of e-mails for all the different domains we host on our server. These are not our personal company e-mails but our client e-mails for the different websites we are hosting for them.
So how do we set up and configure (add new) e-mails for the different domains on our server?
I hope I haven't been confusing and you guys understand what I am asking. Thanks!

There are a couple of ways of handling multi-domain email. The 'right' way for you depends on several factors, including exactly how you're trying to implement mail/domains, how comfortable you are with command line vs. GUI configuration, and number of users.
If you're just looking for a catch-all email for each domain it's probably easier setup using pure postfix virtual domains. that requires command-line configuration, though.
Using the GUI will require that you add every user to your directory and then give them additional 'short names' that match the email address(es) in the other domains.

  • HELP IM NEW TO MAC and my protools app wont open, keeps saying...

that it had to close unexpectedly and that no other apple programs were affected, this is really bogging me down help me out someone thanks so much

You don't give a lot to go on, but...
have you got a clone of your system on another drive you can use to repair your boot drive?
do you have 30% or more free space on your boot drive?
    what PCIe cards if any?
Have you tried booting in Single User Mode and running fsck command?
command S gets you to the command prompt.
    How about Safe Boot?
Which version of protools? Is there a forum area just for protools?
    What other apps are running?
Did you ever run 'memtest' utility (download and gets run from terminal) to test memory.
There was a 5 part tutorial yesterday on Preferences and Plist file corruption

  • Imac mid june 2011 ..connected toslink to optical to my hometheatre and yest io only get stereo sound..audio midi setup 5.1 is greyed out ? help ?new to mac

guys after a long time...i finally shifted to mac ...a long time windows user...so far the experience is been good..
ok here is my first problem with this setup
in india its a pain to get a toslink to mini adapter ...finally i found one and connected the mini end to headphone jack behind my imac...
(imac 21.5 mid june 2011) and optical end to my hometheatre ...
in audio midi setup the multichannel option is set to stereo 2ch 16 bit..
perian is installed and set to use dolby prologic..
i only get stereo sound from itunes, vlc or movist or even xbmc and boxee...tried them all configured the audio to use 5.1 but no luck,
    questions
why is 5.1 greyed out ?in audio midi setup ?
i am using my mac to create multimedia content and knowing how the sounds created will be heard helps me a lot..
i have invested a lot (3 years savings in this mac) and i wouyld very much appreciate all your help..
i also purchased a griffin hdmi port which connects to my tv but the audio is still stereo..
finally got a toslink http://www.amazon.com/3-5MM-TOSLINK-FIBER-OPTIC-TOSLINK-mini-Toslink/dp/B00006LV F3 this one ...still only stereo...
any help would be greatly appreciated .....

Hello John, I figured it was a signal issue. All the speakers fire and the sound is great. I was running the speakers thru a Dell PC with a Creative X-Fi Elite Pro, THX Certified, 7.1 soundcard using a fiber optic from the Mac Pro to the Z906's, it worked great until the Dell died!!! When I bought the soundcard from Creative I also bought the GigaWorks S750, THX Certified, 700 watt, 7.1 speaker system, used the speakers for 11 years and then the woofer/amp said "I QUIT" Creative quit making the speaker system and the sound card. The satellite speakers from the Creative GigaWorks speaker system still sound great (rated at 78 watt each) and are a little better speaker than the one's that came with the Z906 and the wattage from the 906 is sufficient to drive the satellites without any distortion. Thank you for addressing my issue, you confirmed what I suspected all along, just needed to hear it from someone with the same setup.
One last question, I purchased a Diamond Multimedia USB Soundcard, can't use the fiber optic(not supported by Mac) but the green, tan and black RCA's plug in and produces adequetly. When you plug your 906's into the Mac Pro using the fiber optic how do you set your speaker configuration? When I plug into the mac pro with fiber optic the 'Audio Midi Setup' does not seem to see the 5.1 configuration. Any thoughts there?

  • Help! New to Mac and can't get imovie to work

    hi
i just bought a refurbished iMac and I'm trying to make/edit dvd's from my sony dcr-dvd203 camcorder. Since it says it doesn't support the camera I've tried burning the mini-dvd onto a regular dvd. but how do i import and save the contents of the disk drive so i can work on it?

When i put the disc in the drive it plays on the DVD player but doesn't comeup on iMovie.
Sounds like it is working properly. iMovie is not designed to to edit MPEG-2 content. Even if the DVD where in a camcorder and properly recognized, iMovie would have to demultiplex the AC3 content, convert it to AIFF and store it in a generic MOV file container. Also, since only about 6.67% of the video frames on the DVD are editable, the other 93.33$ would have to be converted to intra-frames before it could be merged with the audio. Even then, since audio and video of your original file was synchronized with each other spatially, offsets have to be generated to minimize drifting between the two tracks in a temporally synchronized MOV file container.
Am not trying to "snow" you here with technical matters but just indicate some of the problems facing users of multiplexed MPEG-2 (HDD/DVD) content camcorders. Some work well with iMovie '08 while others may have problems with a particular work flow or simply don't work at all. In all cases, however, you the user can opt to do what iMovie '08 may not be able to do on its own -- manually convert the data to a suitable format which iMovie '08 can handle.
As previously indicated, the MPEG-2 codec was developed as a distribution and delivery compression format -- not an editing format. It is well suited for delivery and viewing by DVD and Satellite because it condenses the data for compact storage or transmission via relatively narrow bandwidth. Essentially what you have to do is de-compress the data to a an edit compatible data format which is usually stored in files of much greater size. This means disregarding the original purpose for which the camcorder manufacturer specifically chose this particular storage medium.
What I recommend is that new users simply download the free iSquint application. (This is the "smaller brother" application of Visual Hub.) Since it is free, does not require any special codecs, and is very simple to use, it make a good starting place for this type of conversion. Basically, if you can get your VOB or other "muxed" MPEG-2 content file to your hard drive, you should be able to convert it for use in iMovie '08. Even in its default opening mode, if you drop your "muxed" file to the work area, it will quickly create a 320x240 MPEG4/AAC which can be opened in iMovie '08. Using the "Optimize for TV" option will create a 640x480 standard VGA display file with somewhat better quality. Increasing the video data rate increase the video quality even more. (Actually, you are not really increasing the quality here, but rather simply preventing the unnecessary loss of video quality.) In any case, switching to H.264 compression format could possible improve quality even more since this compression format is 2.0-2.5 times as efficient as MPEG-4 used above but increases the amount of time required for the re-compression process.
Thus, the paragraph above should allow the novice user to determine if his or her file can be easily made iMovie '08 "edit" compatible, as well as, explore some of the settings and their effects on the conversion process. Since the application is, as already stated, free, standalone, and easy to use, it allows the new user to evaluate the basic conversion process with only a small investment in terms of time. It also allows them to determine if they need or desire to invest money in more advanced programs allowing a wider variety of output formats, additional features, and the possible potential for even higher quality editing. This recommendation merely offers the interested user an opportunity to gain the necessary experience upon which to base a "more informed" decision regarding where to go/what to do next.

  • Help! new to Mac and lost photos

Hello, all: I have done a lot of research of this forum (quite impressive, BTW) but I'm not sure how to proceed.
Recently got ext. HD and cloned my whole system. Checked several apps and all worked well. I then was trying to backup iPhoto to DVD and somehow screwed up my Library. Applied several of the techniques mentioned by Old Toad, Lori, et al, and recovered most of my photos. Good. My most recent roll still remains missing so I look to my ext HD to find my old Library to copy it back to my Pictures folder - but all I find in the Ext HD iPhoto Lib is the new, rebuilt Library (still missing my last roll). What am I not doing right?
    Thanks in advance. GW

  • Help!  New to Mac! Pictures will not load on Safari (blue question marks)

Sometimes when I surf the web (especially sites like Facebook.com), pictures will not load. They turn into little blue check marks. Eventually, none of the pictures on the webpage will load. I have to shut down Safari, reboot my computer, and then pictures load again for a little while. Any advice? Please help!

... you may have something slowing your connection if you are wireless...I get this from time to time and believe that it is generally a connection speed issue related to interference or distance from my airport. The signal is usually great, but drops off from time to time.

  • MIGRATING FROM POWER PC G5 TO NEW i MAC

Approx how long should it take & is connecting machines via ethernet cable the fastest?
    Anything to watch out for?
    Thanks.

Depends on how much you need to migrate. Ethernet is not the fastest. FireWire is faster - Target Disk Mode - and is what you will need to do using Migration Assistant. However, there are some caveats when migrating from a PPC to an Intel Mac:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:

    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)

    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)

/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • I have an older ibook, safari keeps crashing when I try to navigate beyond my home page. New to mac please help

I am new to mac and was given an ibook. When using safari it will crash every time I attempt to navigate beyond my homepage, I have done all system update and I am not sure what I need to do. Any ideas, tips, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you

This iBook has Mac OS X 10.3.9?  In the Menu Bar for Safari, under Safari, look for an item that says something like "Reset Safari."  You can try resetting Safari, including emptying its cache.
If that does not help, since this Mac is new to you and probably came with the software already installed (and previously used by someone else), you may want to create a new user account for yourself.  Under the Apple Menu, select System Preferences.  Go to the Accounts pane.  Create a new user account that is Administrator.  Make sure it is an Admin account.
From the Apple Menu, log out and log in to the new user account.  In the new user account, it should feel like using a new Mac, with most settings set to default.  Try using Safari, to see if the problem still occurs.  Actually, you may want to create a new admin user account, even if the Safari problem is resolved; it's the next best thing to doing a complete clean re-install to get a fresh start.  You can eventually get rid of the old user account.
FYI, that version of Safari that comes with 10.3 is pretty old.  The current version of Safari (or any recent version of Safari) will not run on 10.3.  You may want to download the latest Mac OS X 10.3.9 compatible version of more recent web browsers, such as Camino, FireFox, Opera, or iCab.

  • Need a little help new to mac

Need a little help I'm new to Mac.. i have had my ibook for over a year now and i like it a lot, but some times my usb post dies on my for a couple days maybe weeks. Ill have my ipod connected and when i go to plug in a flash drive. It doesn't detect my ipod anymore and my usb port don't work. it says that they were "removed improperly" and now they are not working again..i have tried to reinstall the whole os again and that doesn't work i don't have the hardware test disk so i don't know what could be the problem i know its not the logic board is there any test i can do to it to find out the problem its an ibook late 2001... there is no reset button on it. i tried to hold in the space bar and now when i boot up i get prompt to this screen that shows the world and then a folder with a ? mark but then after a few sec it boots right up im a mess need some help

+it says that they were "removed improperly"+
You have to go to the iPod's icon on your computer (or the flash drive's icon), select it and eject it there before removing it. Otherwise, data can be corrupted and/or lost. Repeatedly removing it without ejecting it from the desktop can cause it not to be recognized any longer.
If your iBook is a "late 2001" model. It should have a reset button. Check out the chart here to make sure which model iBook you have:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1772?viewlocale=en_US
+i get prompt to this screen that shows the world and then a folder with a ? mark but then after a few sec it boots right up+
It's trying to find a network volume from which to boot.
Once it's booted up, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk, and select your Mac OS X startup volume. Then close System Preferences. The next time you start up, it should start up without looking for a network volume.

Yes. You should probably use Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5; note that Mac OS X 10.5 doesn't support Classic. If you're looking for other Mac OS 9 browsers, try iCab and Classilla.
