Help me, O-b-noir-obe!

b noir, I need your help! I posted my problem in another thread a couple of weeks ago, and I've been pulling my hair out since, trying to find a solution. I've tried EVERYTHING and need some fresh ideas. Help me, Obnoirobe!! Many thanks in advance!

That's perfect info you've given in that thread ... I've got a reasonable idea of what might be afoot. I'll pop in over there in a moment or so.

First, open your Action Center and expand "Maintenance". Click "View reliability history":
Once the reliability report has been generated, look for Critical events for Safari generated at the time of the "Safari has stopped working" messages. Doubleclick the name Safari in the critical events. (Don't click View solution.) Here's a screenshot showing what to doubleclick:
You should see something that looks like the following screenshot:

  • A big THANK YOU to B. NOIR! because...

I just experienced my first "iTunes has encountered an error and needs to close" warning!, when I booted up my machine this morning and tried to launch iTunes. I tried and tried to coax iTunes to open but I wasn't successful! Next, I decided to back up my iTunes library--it' been about two weeks since I last did this and I've purchased a number of new tunes in the meantime, plus I endured the iTunes Plus upgrade in the interim. All of this was worth trying to save!
Then, I tried a few times to launch iTunes, but dang it--iTunes refused to open. Thanks to reading the many helpful posts by b. noir I knew right away Quick Time was probably the culprit. Sure enough--I tried to open Quicktime independently and it caused an error.
I solved my problem by opening my Add/Remove Programs folder and "changing" (i.e. repairing) Quicktime. (I first tried to do this with my Norton program active and the fixes failed! The next time I tried, I turned off my virus protection and my firewall, then things seemed to work correctly.)
However, please know that I did have to reboot my computer before the corrections took effect!
Now, all is well and iTunes works fine again!
Anyway, this is a big shoutout to b. noir for helping me find the solution from all of his forum posts. I didn't even have to ask a question in the forums, I already knew what the answer would be! And, it was the correct answer!
Thank you "b. noir" and all of the other helpful volunteers on this site! I would not have known how to solve this problem so quickly otherwise. In fact, I'm sure I would have spent the bulk of this day trying to get iTunes to open.
    --Samdogmom

I'm sorry to hear you are having the same problem. Here's one of b. noir's posts about how to fix it:
Re: "iTunes has encountered an error and has to close"
Posted: Jan 23, 2006 8:06 AM in response to: MAJR
    well done MAJR!
just a note on the error message "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close".
there are actually at least three different contexts in which people get this message, and the treatments will differ depending on the context. here's some info on the three most common contexts.
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when LAUNCHING ITUNES
this is the most common time to see the message. in my experience, 90% of the time this is caused by a broken QuickTime 7.0.x. So the first thing people should check for is whether their Quicktime will launch, or whether it gives them an error message when they try to launch it.
if you get an error message when you try to launch Quicktime, the standard treatment is to swap out your QuickTime. there's actually an Apple KB doc on the problem, although the silly sausages have given the error message incorrectly in the doc (as of the 23 December 2005 revision), which makes it more difficult to find the message when you're searching for it:
iTunes 6 for Windows unexpectedly quits when opened
... that method is pretty servicable in the majority of cases, but it leaves you open to a known complication of a broken Quicktime where people can't uninstall their QT and get an error message citing their QuickTime "uninstall.log". so i usually suggest to people that they try a careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall instead (which gets past the "uninstall.log" error):
download and save a copy of the QT 7.0.4 installer to your hard drive. (run the install from there rather than online.) switch off all antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.0.4 Standalone Installer
known complications of QuickTime reinstalls: the most common (for QT versions 7.0.2 and 7.0.3 and iTunes versions 5.0.0.35 through 6.0.1.3, at least) is an error message citing "Error 0x80040707". in this context (again, the treatments for this error message are context dependent too), the most common cause of the Error 0x80040707 is a snarlup in the QT installation registry entries.
what typically fixes it is the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
use the utility to clear the existing Quicktime entries. then try the careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall again.
other known causes of "itunes has encountered a problem ..." on launch: probably the most common of the rarer causes (if you'll pardon the oxymoron) is a rare weird problem to do with the registry and user accounts on XP machines.
to check for that, first head into your "User Accounts" control panel and create a new user account with full administrative privileges. (there's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) while you're in that control panel, switch off "Fast User Switching" in your logging-on preferences.
now, log out of the old account and log into the new account. can you get itunes to launch inside the new account?
if itunes does launch inside the new account, then try an experiment (this rules out an ultra-rare "false positive diagnosis" of the registry/user-account thing). use the following technique to share the music from your old account to the new account:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
if itunes still launches from the new account once you've shared the music from the old account to the new account, then you've got the registry/user-account thing.
fixing the old account might be tricky. we've had mixed success with combinations of complete uninstalls of itunes using the following technique:
Da Gopha: Stepwise clean uninstallation of iTunes
... followed by application of a Registry repair program such as RegCleaner or Registry Fix. failing that, it might be worth just "moving house" to the new account.
(there are other even rarer causes of this message on launch ... if you believe you've got one of those, best to start your own thread and explicitly explain as best as you can what the behavior is and what steps you've already taken to try to resolve the issue.
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when IMPORTING A CD
in iTunes versions 4.9 through 6.0.1.3 this was most commonly caused by a hyperthreading problem on PCs with dual cores and dual processors. on those versions of iTunes, the workaround was to set the itunes affinity to a single core/processor. (Otto42 is our authority on that topic.) but the bug has been fixed in iTunes 6.0.2:
iTunes for Windows quits unexpectedly importing CDs on a dual-processor or dual-core computer
"itunes has encountered a problem ..." when PLUGGING IN AN IPOD
the most mysterious of the three main classes. there doesn't seem to be a common cause of this one (or at least it hasn't been clearly identified yet).
probably the first things to check up on are:
iTunes for Windows may unexpectedly quit when syncing folders of pictures with iPod
... but if no joy there, this is probably the best next port of call:
Troubleshooting an unexpected quit or restart of Windows, iTunes, or QuickTime

  • After upgrading to 10.2.2.12  on windows XP SP3 , itunes does not display any summary info or buttons/options. The buttons work but it does not display the text on the button or the options available.

I recently upgraded the iTunes software to 10.2.2.12 on my Windows XP laptop. Since then, iTunes stopped displaying the Summary info
, the text on the buttons, the various drop down options. The buttons seem to be working but I can't tell what that button is supposed to do
or the option I am selecting. This is preventing me from syncing my photos to the laptop.
this was not a problem with the previous version of iTunes.
    Actions taken :
    - I tried downloading iTunes again and repairing the install. That did not fix it.
    - Don't want to uninstall it as I am worried that I would lose all the songs and the purchases etc.
    1. Has anyone encountered this ?
    2. Is there a solution for this ?
Many thanks in advance for your time and help

b noir, my Windows 7 machine is having the exact same issue as nsadal, and I have already confirmed that all six of the Segoe UI fonts are installed on my computer.  Are any other Windows users having this problem with the 10.2.2.12 iTunes release?
Yeah it does, although the problem predates version 10.2.2.12. It's been around since earlier-on in the version 10s (at least).
It's usually Segoe UI font trouble on the Windows 7 systems too. Unfortunately, the Vortical troubleshooting technique only works on XP and Vista systems, so dealing with the issue on a Windows 7 system is trickier. (There's a bunch of different possible issues relating to the fonts that could be in play, and so the treatment tends to depend on which issue in particular you've got with the Segoe_UI fonts.)

  • Itunes 10.6.1.7 - Obliterated my Library

Hoping someone can assist.  I just updated my itunes on my Windows PC to the new Itunes 10.6.1.7.  After restarting my computer, I opened the application to find my entire itunes library gone.  No music, videos, etc and now I'm afraid to see what will happen if I connect one of my devices.
It's as if it's not loading my previous library and starting completely from scratch!
    Please help if possible.

b noir has you covered, downloading iTunes again shouldn't be necessary. Copy the most recent file from the Previous iTunes library folder and paste it into the main iTunes folder. If you "upgrade" again then you would need to use an earlier file as the upgrade will backup and update the "empty" version of the library.

  • Installing older version of iTunes

I am trying to install an older version of Itunes and am getting the following error: The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. I have tried renaming the file, deleted the folder iTunes in my documents/my music (didn't have anything in it anyway), uninstalled and reinstalled but still get the same error. I have tried to upgrade itunes 10.5 to 10.7 on my PC but keep on getting "older version of Bonjour cannot be removed". I have tried to locate msicuu2.exe which was suggested might help but I understand that microsoft has withdrawn it as it conflicts with office 2007, which I have. Anyway I was unable to find it anywhere.
The current version of iTunes 10.5 operates with my iPod Classic but not with my iPhone 4s whose software v6 requires a later version of iTunes.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi b noir
I have followed your suggestion and this time the itunes installed to give me 10.7.  However on restarting the computer the error message from AppleSyncNotifier.exe - Entry Point Not Found "The Procedure entry point sqlite3_wal_checkpoint could not be located in the dynamic link library SQLite3.dll."
Is this likely to cause any problems or can it be ignored?  What do you think?
Anyway Itunes appears to load OK. I have still to try syncing the iPod and the iPhone.  It was the latter that required the upgrade.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Error: cannot synch ipad/ipod due to software not being installed?

    Hey community!
I've been having this problem synching both my iPod touch and iPad to iTunes (running on a recent Windows 7 machine). I kept getting the error message stating that I didn't have the correct 64bit version of iTunes installed. With a little help from user b noir down at this discussion thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20296011#20296011 , I've been able to connect both iPad and iPod without having iTunes giving the eroor again.
But, iTunes shows neither of these, both in the basic musiclist and in the preferences-tab.
The devices don't appear in the 'my computer'-window, but in the device manager of win7 they are listed as usb-controllers: both always named 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver'. The usb-icon left of their name has this yellow exclamation sign (suggesting an error i presume) but when rightclicking and checking all details, nothing is mentioned about possibles faults.
Basically I'm stuck and really need some help on this matter.
In the installation-forum I've already been helped up untill this point (see this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20296011#20296011 ).
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks in advance!

I read in another discussion concerning the same problem that reinstalling the AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi alone would do the trick, but all I get when I open that msi is this:
"A later version of Apple Mobile Device Suppor' is already installed on the computer."
That's a rarer one. (That sort of trouble more commonly hits different .msi files in the iTunes installer bundle.)
    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Mobile Device Support entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another AMDS install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • ITunes 7.5 messes up audio configuration

I'm kind of stuck in a hole here. With the previous iTunes version, I could not access the iTunes store for some reason. I upgraded my iTunes to 7.5, but now, every time I try and open it, it says it has detected a problem with my audio configuration. I can still open iTunes however, but cannot play any of my songs. But the good thing is, I can now access the store.
My question is, would uninstalling and re-installing Quicktime fix the problem, and if not, what would? Because it seems as if it's the same problem happening, but previously when this happened (with the previous version of iTunes) I could not open my iTunes at all.
    Help appreciated, thanks,

Does the XP troubleshooter identify any problems?
There is a tab in the list of devices in my device manager titled "Other devices," where I found my audio device manager tab and SM Bus controller tab. I am not sure what the latter is but both have a yellow question mark and exclamation mark next to it. I clicked my audio device tab and did not find a troubleshoot option. However, it did say the following:
+This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)+
+To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.+
...with a "Reinstall Driver..." button it wants me to click. With the SM Bus controller, it said:

    Anyone else experience this --
My audio files (aac,mp3) are sounding a bit "off" when played in Quicktime Pro 7.1.6 They sound ever-so-slightly wobbly, with some faint clicking here and there. The same songs when played in my Itunes (up to date) on same computer sound absoultely fine.
    Any reports of this? Remedies?

okay. i don't usually associate Norton with this sort
of thing (i associate it many other iTunes
issues, but not with this one.)
let us know if disabling Norton helps ... if not,
we'll try working through some other possibilities.
    Hi,
Disabling the Norton did not help, however I found another solution. I ended up deleting the new iTunes and installing the older, but latest of version 6 which I remember having worked well and viola... success! It works great! Thanks again for you help and time b noir. Nice to have the player working again.
