Help me open a link in a new custom-sized window.

I know how to open a link in a new window target="_blank" but I can't figure out how to get the window to open to a custom-sized window.
Look at this page http://web.mac.com/theshow2/iWeb/weddings/Samples/Samples.html and hit the "Sample #1" link to see what I'm talking about. I want the window to open to the size of the movie instead of all the dead-browser space around it.
Can anybody out there help me?

Read through this topic for some ideas about using Javascript to open links in a new window.

It may not include the custom-sizing you're specifically interested in, but you may well find general information which will be of help.

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Using the middle mouse button to open a link in a new background tab also reloads the current page.

When I click on a link with the middle button to open the link in a new background tab, the original page reloads and my view jumps to the top each time.
The new tab loads fine but in order to continue reading the original page I have to scroll down to where the link I clicked on is.
If I right-click on the link and select "Open Link in New Tab" from the context menu then the behaviour is as expected -- does not reload the original page. The flaw only happens when using the convenient mouse shortcut.
This is annoying, for example, on long Wikipedia articles where I want to open some of the cited pages in other tabs for reading later whilst I continue to read original article. I'm constantly having to find where I was in order to continue reading.
I've observed this behaviour on both Windows XP and Ubuntu on various computers.
[EDIT]: Better description of problem in title.

I've never had that happen with Firefox 4 on WinXP. I haven't updated my Netbook that runs Ubuntu to Firefox 4 yet.
    1. Try disabling the Java Console 6.0.24 and the Java Quick Starter 1.0 extensions and see if that solves your middle-click problem.
    2. Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

When I start mozilla or open any link in a new window I get the desired page to load but an additional new tab page opens up along with it. I've tried switching my homepage to different things (new tab, firefox home, show blank page) but I always get an additional new tab to open. How do I get only a single page to open?

    Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. <br>
'''Note''': ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.''
*Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
'''For Firefox versions previous to 29.0:'''
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox"[[Image:Button reset]] button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
    '''For Firefox 29.0 and above:'''
#Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Troubleshooting Information''.
Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
#At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox"[[Image:Button reset]]. Click on it.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

  • How do I make middle click open a link in a new tab?

Previously, when I clicked a link using the wheel click on my mouse, it opened the link in a new tab. I recently updated firefox, and now if I middle click (wheel click) on a link in Firefox, nothing happens. I just want this feature back. I tried looking in my mouse settings but could not find a relevant setting there. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I should add: I have also lost the ability to middle click on a tab to close it.

  • Opening a link in a new window puts its entry in history while browsing in private mode.Does it suppose to work in this way?

    <blockquote>Locking duplicate thread.<br>
    Please continue here: [/questions/785616]</blockquote><br>
I have set Firefox to never remember history. This is equivalent to private browsing but whenever I open a link in a new window I can see an entry in the History menu under "Recently Closed Windows". Firefox should not remember any type of history when I already said it do so.

    Hi,
the only way I know of the is to go to file and click for a new Window.
Sounds like tabs maybe your thing, from Safari's Helpviewer. for more info look there.......
To turn on tabbed browsing, choose Preferences from the Safari menu and click Tab. Select Enable Tabbed Browsing.
To open a link or bookmark in the bookmarks bar in a new tab, hold down the Command key and click the item, or hold down the Control key, click the item, and choose Open in New Tab from the shortcut menu.
To open a bookmark collection in the bookmarks bar or a folder of bookmarks in the Bookmarks Library in tabs, hold down the Control key, click the collection or folder, and choose Open in Tabs from the shortcut menu.
If you select the Auto-Click checkbox for a folder in the bookmarks bar, then you can open all the bookmarks in the folder in tabs by clicking the folder name in the bookmarks bar.
To open a webpage in a new tab, choose New Tab from the File menu and type the address for the page.
To close a tab, click the close button in the tab.
To quickly switch between tabs, press Command-Shift-[ and Command-Shift-].
To show a webpage that is in a tab and close all other tabs, hold down the Option key and click the close box in the tab you want to remain open.
When you click a link in a page you are viewing in a tab, the page opens in the current tab. Click the Back and Forward buttons in the address bar to scan pages you have opened in a tab.
If you choose a page from the History or Bookmarks menu, the page opens in the current tab.
Hope it helps you do what i think you are looking for.
    Cheers
    Eme

  • Why does rightclick+t on a link open the link in a new tab, yet rightclick+t on a bookmark on the toolbar grays it out?

This happens to be more of an issue using a trackpad. Then you rightclick on a link and then hit "t" it opens the link in a new tab. when you do the same command on on a bookmark on your bookmark toolbar, it grays the bookmark out. none of the settings have been changed on it. the way to fix it, i discovered is to right click on the bookmark and hit "p" no idea why, but this solved it. I can't find any of these command online, partly i don't know how to correctly search the rightclick command, but partly, it would only probably list the commands that actually show up as stuff to click with your mouse.
I would also like to know why for two different locations that both open a link in a new tab, why the mapped shortcuts are different. for a link, it is rightclick+t, for a bookmark it is rightclick+w. I mean, make it the same commands, it makes much more sense that way.

Because the "T" in "Open Link in New <u>T</u>ab" is underscored in the link context menu (right-click menu)
You are on Windows 7 and by default Microsoft hid that useful information by default in all of their menus.
See item #9 on my page [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/windows-7/win7.htm Windows 7 Home Premium]
<b>Restore missing underscored letters in menus</b> (turned off by default in Windows 7)
    <br>Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center (<b>WinKey+U</b>) → <i>Make the keyboard easier to use</i>
<br>&nbsp; [x] Turn on Toggle keys
<br>&nbsp; [x] Underline keyboard shortcuts and access keys
<br>&nbsp; [&nbsp; ] Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen.
<p>Toggle keys appears both under mouse and under keyboard in Ease of use / Accessibility options.
<br>Though I would like to activate the last option, preventing windows from being automatically arranged
would also deactivate my favorite Windows 7 added WinKey+&lt;arrowkey&gt; keyboard shortcuts to resize window to left/normal/right side, or to maximize/norm/minimize window.&nbsp; On a dual/extended monitors this would be left/norm/right on each monitor so left/right arrow actually have six positions passing between monitors.

  • Firefox opens all links in a new window

I am using Firefox 4.0.1. I have checked the settings on my browser under Tools / Options / Tabs and "open new windows in tabs" is set. However, whenever I click on a link on a website, Firefox opens the link in a new window. This occurs even if I right click on the link and choose the option to open the link in a new tab instead of a new window.
This behavior began just recently. To the best of my knowledge, none of the add-ons have updated recently.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes

  • Sometimes when I open a link in a new tab and then switch to the tab, the address bar clears and the website won't open.

Sometimes when I open a link in a new tab and then switch to the tab, the address bar clears and I'll have to re open the tab and hope that doesn't happen again. Sometimes this happens again and again. Most of the times if I just open the link in a new tab and don't switch to it, this won't happen. But as I switch too the tab, the text would disappear and the link wouldn't open.

  • Open Safari link as a new page?

Is it possible to open a link in a new Safari page? (The equivalent to right-clicking on your desktop and selecting "open link in new page")

No, there is not a way to open a link in a new page.
You would need to open a new page, then type in the address.
However, if you have an icon on your home screen for a particular website, it will open a new page when tapped on.
    Hope this helps.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?<br/> ''A troubleshooting mode.''<br />

  • Firefox won't open mailto links in a new window like it used to...it just opens gmail in the current tab.

I recently upgraded firefox and now whenever I click a mailto link it opens gmail in the current tab rather than in a new window. How can I get it to open email links in a new window.

My MAILTO problem was finally fixed on the June 29, 2012 Firefox version 14 beta 10 release.

  • Using Firefox 4.0 Beta 4. When I open a link in a new window, the web address does not show in the location bar. Why?

When I open a web page link in "a new window" the link opens, but the web page information does not appear in the location bar. It is blank. If I open the link in a new tab, there is ho problem.
Further, if a open a link from the tab without a location in a new tab on the same window and then go back to the original tab, the location bar fills with the web address.
Have done this starting in several locations, so it not location dependent.

That behaviour is likely top be caused by an add-on, and in your case the likely culprit is IE Tab 2, the various versions of IE Tab have caused problems with Firefox 4 beta including issues with the location bar not being updated.
You can test to see if IE Tab 2 is causing your problem by disabling it and then seeing if the location bar in a new window shows the address. If it is not that add-on causing the problem, see [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
For info, the IE Tab Plus add-on has been updated recently to improve compatibility with Firefox 4 beta, you may want to try that one instead. The latest version is available from http://coralietab.mozdev.org/installation.html
