Help Me Pick a Laptop

Hey everyone, how are you? This is my first post. I've been looking at laptops but can't decide on one. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a normal low knowledge computer guy asking for help. However, I wish Best Buy had more options to customize the search when you go through laptops and you can specify on the left hand side certain attributes.
I've really been keeping my eye on the following laptop...
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Laptop+/+AMD+Phenom%26%23153%3B+II+Processor+/+15.6%22+Dis...
It looks incredible except CNet "says" it runs older programs a tad slow due to it being a 2.0GHz quad, so older non multi-threaded apps don't take advantage. I've played with identical track pads (or as HP calls it, the HP Clickpad) in store and I'm not sure I like it. Also the graphics is the only other gripe I seem to have found because of the lack of dedicated video memory and a small wish to have a number pad would be heaven.
So, with the following preferences, would someone like to give an opinion on something I may like?
-I'd love to have a full number key pad on my keyboard.
-Good graphics so I can play games, 512m-1g dedicated card memory. (I have no preference between ATI or nVidia)
There was a Samsung I think I saw somewhere, and it was Red, my favorite color, that may have had both of the above.
-I'd like a quad core, but a nice dual is ok. (I have no preference between AMD or Intel. My custom gaming desktop is AMD and my MacBook Pro is Intel)
-Good HDD (Prefer 7200RPM)
-Nice Webcam
-Multi Touch track pad (You know, click, zoom, scroll, etc...)
-Around $850 or lower BUT I'll work with any  higher price if I like it. and it has the goods I want
Any takers on the "Find My Hidden Treasure" challange?

This has everything but the 7200 RPM HDD, it is also a much better laptop for the price:  Samsung - Laptop / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor / 17.3" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Red/B...  $849.99
- Dedicated memory.
- Much much better proccesser.
- Numeric Keyboard
If you want 7200 RPM with dedicated memory, expect to pay a little more - but considering the value, I'd go with this samsung. The hard drive can be replaced after the fact for very little money if you feel it's sluggish. Remember, the 'spindle speed' is not always the determining factor in a HDD's read/write speed - many other factors are put into play.

  • Help to pick-out a new windows 8 touch screen laptop

I Don't need to most expensive or the cheapest. I guess I want the most bang for my buck. I am not up-to-date on my PCs so I need your help. Just reply with your thoughts and ideas. I've always had Hp but it has been 3 years since I have bought a new laptop. I have a few android tablets but no new laptop. The main one I use now is a 64 bit windows 7 with 2.2GHz duel core 17" screen and 4gb ram. It still works just fine but I'm thinking about a faster PC and want the touch screen like my tablets. No resistive touch screens if they even make them anymore.
    Looking for the following
    windows 8
    touch screen
    i7 or same in amd
    8 gb or more ram
    not sure about the rest
Please give me your opinion or advice. if you could buy anything at best buy, which ones and why? PS I game on the PS3 (soon on the PS4) but not on the PC and I don't like lag or buffering in any way.

hmmm, from what you are telling me, I would suggest this laptop:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+15.6%22+Touch-Screen+Laptop+-+8GB+Memory+-+750GB+Hard+Drive+-+Bla...
I would suggest because I am an asus fan myself, I have always used them as my go to manufacturer with my motherboards on any custom built PC i put together. They are a very reputable name, and are very well made. It should meet all your needs, has 750 GBs of hard drive space (gives you enough room for all the HD pictures and videos!) as well as plenty of ram and an i7 Processor. The ONLY thing i see that might be slightly better is a couple of the sony vaios have solid state drives, and that is a nice plus. Faster boot times, faster read/write speeds. But as you said you didn't want something to make you spend more if it was not a big difference and while it would be a difference, I don't see it being THAT big of a difference for yourself. If you can find a local best buy that has that Asus, I would suggest going in to check it out if its on display. Get a feel for it and see if you like the keyboard. That is a big MUST on buying a laptop, making sure you like the keyboard!
I hope this helped! post any other questions if you like!

  • Help me pick a new powerbook

I got the go ahead from my boss to pick out a new laptop (the ibook G3 12.1 800 is broken and oudated. I know this is subjective but wanted some thoughts on what's important to have and what's not. I'm trying to keep it around $1200-1400
    Some things I'm considering
    1) really want a superdrive
    2) With most specs being equal, is it that great advantage to get a powerbook over an ibook?
    3) I've grown accustomed to 12 inch screen, but wouldn't a 15 be really nice? (I do all my computing on this screen)
    4) Is the backlit keyboard that big of a deal?
    5) Bundled software is not that important
    6) What do you think about buying apple-refurbished and or slightly discounted models?
    7) Any other suggestions in your experience, like, 'I wish I would've got this' or I paid more for this but didn't really use it, etc.
On this computer I will do some simple web design, word processing and brochures for my company, some but not a lot of video editing, and other general tasks. Thanks All

I've had 4 15's - all had the lines problem. Every 15" machine I've seen in an Apple Store has had it - the latest was last week. All 4 post Oct 05 15's and 2 Post Oct 05 17's that I've had have had the sound looping - including the machine I currently have.
I was actually prepared to live with the lines on the 15 - I was still impressed with the overall resolution and brightness, but then another, unrelated problem meant it had to be returned. I switched to the 17 and immediately noticed the "lineless" improvement.
Not everyone is bothered by the lines, believes they have them or cares if they do. Some people don't notice or mind, others swear that the lines are giving them headaches. As someone who was willing to put up with the lines while Apple worked out what to do about them, I can say that I saw them pretty clearly. They made things look like they had "texture" when they shouldn't have.
Seems to me that the debate over whether there are or are not lines has been played out in other posts. My advice which appears to have started all this is that there are issues (and it's an undeniable fact that there are for some people) and if considering a post Oct 05 15" it might be a good idea to take a look first. Doesn't seem to unreasonable to me and a bit more sensible than - "don't worry, they're all fine" or "don't do it everyone sees lines and hates them" - I'm not saying that anyone here is saying that, but can't we agree that a sufficient number of people have raised the point that a new user might be well advised to take a look at a machine before shelling out the $$$.
There are 2 tests for lines that I think work.
    1) The first is to press F11 and look to see if there are any faint lines in the shadow at the top.
    2) http://www.cameraid.com/art/quadrants.gif
The top two boxes should be the same shade as each other, and the bottom two should be the same shade as each other also. They are on this 17, they were on another 17, they were not on the 15's I had.
Anyway, I hope nobody minds the post, just trying to be constructive and helpful to the original poster, who at the end of the day will be the person who lives with his/her choice.
    Best of luck.

    Hi Bruce,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I can't tell you whether you should pick a iBook or not, but I can give you some of the facts. First of all, your price range ($1200 - $1400) is less then the cheapest Powerbook (new).
    1) really want a superdrive
Well, for $1300 you can get the 14" 1.42Ghz iBook. The only thing I don't like about the 14" is that some people notice that the resolution isn't as good as the 12". Its very minute, but both models have the same pixels even though they have different screen sizes. It comes with a SuperDrive like you want and it has 60Gb hard drive, which should last some time.
ith most specs being equal, is it that great advantage to get a powerbook over an ibook?
I find that the 12" Powerbook is not that big of a step up from the 14" iBook, so I don't usually suggest it. I would get the 15" if I were to get a Powerbook. Anyways, the real differences is that it has a better display, better video and graphics support, FireWire 800, PC Slot, better SuperDrive, and a faster processor. Basically the display will be much clearer and the resolution is higher. The Powerbook lets you hook up external monitors like the Cinema Display without any "hacks". FireWire 800 transfers information at 800Mbs rather then FireWire 400 at 400Mbs (USB 2.0 has 480Mbs). The problem with FireWire 800 is that its not as common and the products are more expensive. The SuperDrive has the DL (Double Layer) feature.
I've grown accustomed to 12 inch screen, but wouldn't a 15 be really nice? (I do all my computing on this screen)
The 15" I think is a whole lot better if you are big into graphics and like to have multiple applications/windows open (don't forget watching movies too). The only problem to is that the 15" looses its portability feature depending on if size matters. A 15" is going to have bigger case and it is going to take up more room, for some people that is a negative.
Is the backlit keyboard that big of a deal?
I like the backlit keyboard because it is easier to see those buttons that one isn't used to typing when they are in the dark. It is hard to differentiate between F2 and F3 or F5 in the dark. I believe this also might make the battery loose its charge faster but I don't know.
Any other suggestions in your experience, like, 'I wish I would've got this' or I paid more for this but didn't really use it, etc.
I am big into media editing, programming, and things of that nature, which need a faster computer. I bought the iBook G3 1.33Ghz for school and for traveling. It has served me well for those purposes, but it is time for an upgrade. I am giving this to my dad so when he's traveling or sitting in bed he can go online to check his email and do his work. I suggest buying an external hard drive that is at least as big as the one that you buy in your computer. It is a good idea to back your computer up periodically. I have too many photos to fit on my 40Gb hard drive, so I put my iPhoto 6 Library on my SmartDisk CrossFire 160Gb. I also would recommend buying a Apple Wireless Mouse because it is so better then using the track pad. The only negative is that it doesn't have a scroll wheel.
I can't tell you which to buy, but you should think about what you are going to use your computer for now and in the future. If you are not going to use many "pro" applications (Aperture) then I don't personally see the need for a Powerbook. It really depends on how you think you are going to use it and your budget.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • Please help!!! Laptop won't come on...just beeps three times!

I took my laptop to the apple store to get the internal ac adapter fixed. When I went to pick it up the guy told me that it might not come on because the battery was drained. So I get home and immediately plug it to charge and try to turn it on, but the fan only came on for a brief moment and I heard the laptop beeps three times. The screen didn't come on or anything. The light on the part you push to open the screen blinks three times as well. I didn't think anything of it at first so I kept it charged for an hour but when I checked on it I noticed it was very hot. I immediately unplugged it and tried to turn it on. Nothing but the beeps and blinking lights. I have tried everything including resetting the pmu. Can someone please help me?

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Return your Powerbook to the Apple store. 3 beeps means there are no good banks of memory found. The blinking sleep LED blinking is part of the boot process, and it blinks the error code the beeps also indicated. FYI, the beeps are:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • Please help me get my laptop back someone has cracked the master password and is running multiple operating systems which I have no access to

Okay so I am not a computer expert by any means and have no clue how to fix my system. My father worked for intel for over 20 years as an engineer I asked him to restore my laptop to its original factory state and instead he cracked the master password
installed multiple operating systems and made himself the administrator or domain controller. Many features and options I do not have access to so reading the trouble shooting and going through the steps always leads me to a dead end. The laptop is TOSHIBA
SATELLITE L875D-S7332 a6 VISION AMD WINDOWS 8. As far as I can see my profile is actual running a version of windows 7. I do see reference to a windows 8RT windows 2003 windows vista wow64 and 32 I don't know what all that means I would just like to know how
wipe everything and get back to the factory condition I bought it in. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated

Do you have Win 7 installation disk? If yes, then go ahead and format the laptop if you don't need any data. If you need the data it it, then copy the same to USB disk and format it. Removing OS and deleting these things will anyhow keep some remains on
HDD. TO get the speed and performance back, you might need a fresh installation.

  • Please help me with my laptop!

Hello.  I have a Toshiba Satellite L355d-s7815. It was bought in September. I go to school fulltime online so this computer has been used almost every single day since it's been purchased. And up until two weeks ago it worked just fine.
Now, it turns itself off.  I could be in the middle of an exam, and it will just click and turn off. No warning signs, no popups. No messages from virus protection.
Then when I try to turn it back on, it will just click and turn off a few times. I usually let it sit for a few minutes, then try it. Then the message saying it couldn't start comes on and after searching for 10 minutes tells me to restore it. I click yes, because it won't let me choose anything else. And then when it finally gets done, my Kaspersky is going all crazy telling me my 'black files are corrupted'. and makes me update and then it says I'm fine.
It does this to me on different occasions.  While on the internet. While burning a dvd. And EVERYTIME I do something that requires a restart of my computer. That is how it started. It began about two months ago, but only when a program tried to automatically restart. But in the last week it does it whenever it feels like it.  I need this computer for school so I need all the help I can get into getting this computer back on track.
Also, this is my first laptop.  So I don't know what all I could be doing wrong!
    Thank You.

I assume you have nothing plugged into any of the port (usb/etc) and played in CD drive.
When you read this DO THESE FOLLOWING TASKS IMMEDIATELY
    >> Backup your files... all of them (or anything that worth saving - including saved games etc)
    >> Check if the laptop fan is working or not clogged with dust etc. Some computer just die when its too hot.
    >> Prepare/burn toshiba restore CD
    >> Optional: Try to work in air conditioned room / with laptop slightly raised from the table surface for better air circulation and see if it work better.
There are two major possibilities that I could think of
    1. hardware screwup
    2. software screwup
It is harder to test for #1, so I will suggest on eliminating #2
    1. Go to Windows Systems Restore, try to restore your computer to the day before you suspect there is something wrong with your laptop
    2. Reformat the computer... as painful as it might sound, there are high chance that people at Toshiba depot do this the minute they receive your laptop (ps: Did I mention backup your files)
If 1 or 2 do not solve your problem, there is a pretty high likelihood that your problem involves hardware malfunction. Call their support center on how to initiate warranty claim.
ps: you might considering buying a netbook when your laptop is repaired.
    thats my 2 cents
Please update me on the progress.

  • Need help in buying a Laptop

Hi. I am looking to buy a laptop to replace my desktop.I will be using this laptop in my home only( room to room). For surfing the web,e mail, watching you tube videos,Facebook. And one last important thing, playing on facebook poker games.I think it"s called Zanga on facebook.I remember my old laptop before i bought my desktop,it use to freeze up sometimes while i was playing on Facebook-Zanga poker games.I will not be using my laptop for any other games but poker games. My question is do i need a special graphics card or can i buy any computer for these things .I am 60 yrs. old and don"t know a lot about computers even though i have been using them for years.I can not go more then $600.00.Please help me decide.Thank you for your time in reading this.

Sounds pretty average user requirements. As long as you don't plan on running any graphic intensive software or doing anything like mixing audio professionally you can probably grab whatever you want. Sorry I don't have any other advice for ya. Go see what the blue shirts say, that's what they're there for and they can get a better sense of your needs in the store and actually show you different products. It will also give you an idea of screen size, you'll find a keyboard that you can deal with, sound quality (for what it's worth at least).
$600 is a nice chunk of change to put into a computer now-a-days so I doubt you'll have trouble find anything.
I understand some people in your age range like to bring in family members, but I would urge against it since what happens your relative although they come with good intensions tend to look for stuff that they want, not you.
Example- you may want to end up looking into a tablet, like an iPad or Microsoft Surface tablet, with an attachable keyboard (look up a commercial on youtube if you need to see an example), but your son-in-law might tell you to get a 17 inch laptop that ends up needing plugged in all the time.. Have you ever sat at a Starbucks comfortably with a huge and heavy laptop and close to an outlet.... I haven't.

  • Help on purchasing IdeaPad laptop

    Hi everybody,
I wanna get a new laptop and so far Lenovo IdeaPad seams the right choice, especially for the cool aluminum design.
I'll use it mostly for web/software dev and little bit of design (I'll do this on my desktop but just in case) on both, Linux and Windows 8.
    So far I stumbled over IdeaPad U410 and 430p. (http://shop.lenovo.com/ro/ro/laptops/ideapad/u-series/u430p/) (http://shop.lenovo.com/ro/ro/laptops/ideapad/u-series/u410/).
Not sure what to choose however. Also, I don't know what are the system configurations in these cases.
For example, is there any IdeaPad U430p with this configuration?
    Intel® Core™ i5-4258U (if not Intel® Core™ i7-3517U)
1 TB, optional 16 GB built in SSD
    Full HD 250 nits (1960 x 1080)
    8GB DDR3L 1600 MHz
    Windows 8 Pro x64
If not, what's the closest I can get to this? But with Windows Pro if possible.
And just to make sure, U430p has a aluminum body or it's plastic? So far I've only seen U410 and it looks cool.
    I also appreciate any suggestions

  • HELP I need some help choosing the right laptop

Hello there. I am a student and I am looking to buy a Apple laptop. I have around 700GBP to spend, but I do not wish to spend all of that. As I do not use Macs that often I dont think I need the newer Macbooks or the Macbook Pros as I feel that it is a waste of power. My friend said the 12" Powerbook was the way to go. There are several different models out there and I was wondering if anyone could help me choose one. It will be used mostly for word processing and admin based work, but I would like to have enough power to be able to run some graphic based activities. I wont be using high level apps that much but it would be nice to know if the opportunity was there, then i I have sufficient power to be able to run them. My friend said an 867mhz G4 with upgraded hdd and ram would do the trick, but I have found out that the specs range all the way up to 1.5ghz. I like the look of the powerbook and I have heard they are more reliable than an ibook which is why I dont really want to choose one of those. Thanks for any help!

The biggest advantage of the 12PB is its portability, but you didn't include that in your specs.
The graphics are very good for the small screen. If you need more intense graphics you should consider a larger screen.
I use mine for mostly word processing and e-mail. I am also the IT guy in my small office and I manage networked PCs from my PB. I use an external monitor and screen spanning for extra work area. I thought long and hard before I bought my PB, as I had used PCs extensively all my life. The configuration that was recommended to you will work fine.

I have a laptop with Windows Vista.  I've tried to download iTunes but I keep getting a message that says "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.  A program required for his install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support personel or package vendor."  I read a thread that suggested removing all Apple components then restarting.  I was unable to remove Apple Software Update.  All other components were removed fine.  Someone please help.  Thanks.

  • I defaulted input help field (pick list) but SAP CRM still asking for one

We are running SAP CRM 7.0.
Some fields as you know are dialog / pick list fields.
What I mean by this is they are input help fields where you
can click a little square (in sap crm 7.0) to the right of the text box
and it brings up a dialog screen of values that you can select from.
Here is an example screen shot of what I am talking about:

So what I have done is implemented the GETTER function for this input help field so that by default it has a value.
    The code is like so:
    method GET_CURRENCY.
    CALL METHOD SUPER->GET_CURRENCY

        ATTRIBUTE_PATH = attribute_path

    endmethod.

The method works great it sets the default of the currency to say USD.  When I click the create button to create an opportunity the field currency is set to USD, this is great because it makes my job easier that I dont have to click the input help button and select a currency, it is already there.
But once I click the "Save" button for an opportunity I get a small error in the error notification box that tells me I need to select a currency!  But why is this happening a currency already exists?  So If I click the input help (the little button) and reselect the currency value USD then save my opportunity this error goes away.
The question is why does this happen?  I need it so that the default currency value is recognized by the SAP CRM system.  Why do I have to go back in and re-select the currency if it is already set?  Is there some sort of consistency check or something I need to do to eliminate this problem?
Here is a screen shot after creating an opportunity with the default Currency set to USD (this means I did not select USD in the dialog input help it was defaulted by the getter method:
    http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/3011/enteracurrency.png
Only if I go back into edit mode and actually click the little square to bring up the dialog of values and select USD does this error go away.  Why does this happen ?

I called SET_CURRENCY right after setting my value and the error is now gone.
      SET_CURRENCY( EXPORTING ATTRIBUTE_PATH = ATTRIBUTE_PATH
                    iterator = iterator
                    value = value ).
Got the tip from Pieter who has a good blog on SAP CRM: http://sapcrmweblog.blogspot.com/

  • I need help,,upgraded to ipad2, laptop had to be restored b4 I backed up iPad or saved iTunes library. How do I back up and sync my ipad2 without losing content on my iPad.

I need help,,upgraded to ipad2, my HP laptop had major issues and had to be restored b4 I could back up and save any content on the hard disc. So i havent backed up my iPad2 or saved my iTunes library.
How do I back up and sync my ipad2 without losing content on my iPad.???
I need really simple instructions as I've had a bad run with my laptop the last month.
I have re-installed iTunes,it currently has no content in it
all my music, photos etc had been saved to a an external Hardrive (phew)so I'm not concerned about losing them during a sync, but how do I sync my Ipad without losing the applications... The last back up saved was in June when I still had an ipad1
I tried to back it up last night but kept getting the prompts something to the effect of "iPad can only be synced to 1 iTunes library, syncing will erase all content and replace with content on this iTunes library".
Help please,, I've already lost endless hours fixing my PC issues,so I'm not game to attempt this issue without guarantee I won't lose everything, need a simple solution that anyone can follow as my brain has information overload!!! Lol
    Thanks

This should help you out. I copied this from another discussion a while back. Here is the original discussion link.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11527071#11527071
This is what is in the discussion. It really doesn't get any easier than this.
    1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
