HELP ME PLEASE. Computer not starting up!!!

Last night I tried to do a software update on my computer. There were 4 total updates (2 for the Airport, 1 for the iPod, and 1 for the Mac OS). After completing the updates for the Airport and for the iPod, the Mac stopped halfway while updating the Mac OS software. The computer requested a restart/shutdown for the updates which I proceeded to do.
However, the Mac did not shut down smoothly. It stayed frozen for a moment. I had to force it to shut down. Then when I tried to restart the computer, the Mac is left frozen at the startup (I see the grey Apple logo with the spinning progress indicator in the bottom).
The Mac has 2 accounts (my wife and I). She is the administrator and we usually do software updates while we’re in her account. Last night, I did the update while I was on my account. Do you think this has anything to do with it?
HELP ME PLEASE…………………..

Vanan Murugesan,
Software Update (SU) normally works well but in your case it appears to have partially updated the System, leaving it a mismash of old and new components and hence unusable. As a personal preference, I never combine OS or security updates with other updates such as iTunes; I'll either use SU separately for the System update or download the stand-alone installer and bypass Software Update entirely.
Can you boot from your OS X Install disc / Restore DVD? (The actual disc name varies depending on what model Mac you have and what OS was originally installed on it --- you can add that info to your posts via the My Settings link under your username in the box on the right of the Discussions pages). Try using Disk Utility from the Installer menu of the Install disc to check the hard drive, as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck.
If the Mac boots from the Install disc, you can use your Tiger OS X Install disk to do an Archive and Install to reinstall the OS X System while retaining your user data and settings.
If that works, you can get the OS X updates not via Software Update but through the Downloads link at the top of the Discussions pages, searching for the stand-alone Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo for PPC (or Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo for Intel as the case may be). Note that the 10.4.6 update will restart the computer twice; this is expected. If your Mac is an Intel model, you may need to also refer to Firmware Restoration CD v 1.0.
I would certainly run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions while booted form the hard drive after you get things back up and running following the failed SU update.
Good luck!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

It sounds as if you did not put in a pair of identical memory modules or did not use guaranteed compatible memry modules. You can't use the module that was already there unless the one you are adding is identical in all respects.
Only use guaranteed modules in identical pairs if you want your memory upgrade to work right the first time.

  • HELP!!! Computer not starting properly

Hey, I can't get my computer to start up properly.  After I turn off the computer and try to turn it back on, the D-bracket shows the four red lights, which is supposed to be a damaged or incorrectly mounted processor.
I know that there is nothing wrong with the processor, because it has worked fine in other mobos, and I'm almost positive that it is installed properly, because I've had a bit of experience doing it.
To get the computer to start up, I have to detach the video card, turn on the computer for a few seconds, turn off the computer, reattach the video card, and then turn the computer back on.  It starts up fine after that.  What is the problem?  Any suggestions would be great. :O

P.S.  Everything has worked fine on a different mobo, the only thing I'm not sure of is the one I'm using now.

  • Need help now please. macbook wont start up

    I have a white macbook.
I was using it yesterday and the computer just shut off. I went to restart it and it does the chime, goes to the apple screen and just as the little circle under the apple spins, the laptop totally shuts down. it will not start.
I have tried to reset the pram and that didn't work. I just installed 10.6.4 yesterday....
Please help. I need the computer for work today.
    Thank you.

First thing to try, is booting from the restore DVD and installing a fresh copy of 10.6. If you're lucky, the 10.6.4 update just hosed your OS install, and a simple reinstall is all that's needed.
Once you've booted to the 10.6 installer, it couldn't hurt to run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu to verify the SMART status of the drive, and even run a repair disk operation on it.
If the SMART status is failed, or Disk Utility doesn't see the drive, then you're looking at a hardware failure. You'll need to take it somewhere to be fixed if it's under warranty, otherwise if you have some precision screwdrivers like a PH000 and Torx T4, you can replace the drive yourself with pretty much any 2.5" SATA drive.

  • Tried to replace RAM but now computer not starting...PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 - are my hard drives safe? What's up?

Hello - I tried to increase the RAM in my old and trusted Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0...2005)  tonight and now I'm in trouble. It has only 4 slots for RAM.  It came installed with 2X256 and 2X512 ram cards.  I bought 2X 1GB of Ram from Crucial.com after sending them the specs of my computer they assured me it was the right RAM.  I installed the RAM just how the youtube tutorials instructed....  I replaced the 2 256 cards with the new 1GB cards and closed up the computer......note:  I also "dusted" the inside of the mac very carefully and lightly with a barely damp rag.....
I plugged her in and the power button light immediately went on but the computer did not.  The button wouldn't respond to being held down either.   No sign of a startup or a fan noise. Nothing on the screen, no signal.... Nothing.....  So I tried reversing the order of the RAM, I installed the 1GB along with the 512's.  Nothing again, just the light turns on when I plug her in.  Then I returned the RAM to the original configuration.....again NOTHING...just the light on.
I reset the SMU.  (little button underneath the RAM area)  I haven't tried to reset the PRAM yet, but I'm pretty sure that will not work either as she is not starting up at all....just the light is on...  I didn't get a noticeable shock or static spark during the entire operation either. ****....whats up?
Are my Hard Drives safe in there?
Any ideas out there?  Thanks in advance to your advice, T

Ouch!  That was not the way to get dust out.  Running that damp rag anywhere near an electronic component, even if you were wearing a properly grounded writs strap, was way dangerous.
Did you lay the machine on its left side when you replaced the RAM?  That is much safer (though the recommendation only shows up in the service documentation, not the user guide, for some reason).
What I would do at this point is to remove all RAM and try to power the machine.  If other stuff is OK, you won't start but you will see the lunar LED flashing in a repetitive pattern above the power switch.  If you don't see that happening, then things are exceptionally serious.

    Hi,
I have faced this issue and the best bet would be reconfiguring the services.
The other place to check is the DB. Check if it is up.
    Thanks.

  • Why will my computer not start?

    MY computer won't start

    Shutterbug2011,
My guess is your computer has suffered a hardware failure. Please do not piggy back on another thread, this forum is for iMacs and you mentioned you have a MBP.
I would recommend creating your own thread in a MBP forum and I'm sure someone there will provide you some guidance.
    Good luck.

  • Help me please, Reader wont start!

Very wierd situation - Acrobat Reader would not start when I try to open a pdf file, instead heavy harddrive usage starts immediately, my PC hangs for some time and all of this goes on and on until I kill AcroRd32.exe process in Task Manager. After that heavy harddrive usage stops. This was going on with version 9 and recently I uninstalled it and installed Reader X hoping that this will solve the problem but the behaviour is exactly the same! I also have an old Reader version 5, that one still  works OK. But being old version I am constantly getting messages about new features that could be present in new pdf files.
Anybody has a clue what is going on with my Acrobat Reader X and how to fix it?

    Hi guys
My question has not been answered. But I've got some additional information. What I found out is that the problem is somehow linked to my local user profile! If I create another user and login as that user any version of Acrobat Reader starts up just fine. Also, if I login as myself but start Adobe Reader under another user using "Run as..." again it starts up no problem.
    What could be the problem?
    Cheers

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • PLEASE HELP! itunes will not start!

I just downloaded itunes 7.0 when it finished, it told me that itunes installation was not complete because Quicktime was a 7.0, and it had to be the 7.3 version.
I then went ahead and downloaded itunes 7.0 again....and everything was fine.
but now i can't open itunes! i keep clicking and clicking...please help! it's urgent!
    thank you!

I had same problem. Installed Itunes 7, installation appeared ok and then I kept clicking on the icon and nothing would happen except I'd get more frustrated.
I uninstalled Itunes 7 thru add/remove programs. I tried uninstalling quicktunes, wouldn't let me. I then went to explorer, deleted the itunes and quick times folders. My music is located in my documents/my music so it didn't effect my music. Then I turned off my norton antivirus and re-installed itunes 6.0.5 which you can still find and download from itunes website.
Itunes 6.0.5 worked fine. I found those directions thru google and they work great.
I don't know how Apple will sell all those movies and games if they can't get itunes 7 working. I've told everyone I know to avoid it. They took a good system and screwed it up.
    Good luck.
