Help me reduce the woes of my wireless network...

Here's what I have going:
In my bedroom I have a Mirrored Door G4 with an Airport card.
In my living room, I have my modem connected to a Airport Express with 802.11n.
Once in a while, I am able to pick up a signal from my Airport Express, but usually I just "borrow" internet from my neighbors.
I know that my Airport Express is set up correctly as my AppleTV and my MacBookPro both connect without any issues.
A few years ago (before the days of my MacBookPro), I bought an Airport Express, this one with 802.11b/g (I think, date on the bottom says '05).
Here were my two thoughts:
1.) Plug the older Airport Express in RIGHT next to the G4 and extend the range of the network so that it gets some signal.
2.) Plug the older Airport Express in RIGHT next to the G4 and use an ethernet cord to connect directly.
My issues:
1.) Although I have gotten the extended network to work (by using a WEP password, otherwise I get a "connection timeout" error almost immediately), my G4 does not like to stay connected. I cannot get this network to work when I use WPA. I have updated all of my software and tried over and over again.
2.) When I tried to connect directly, Network Preferences told me that the ethernet cord was not plugged in. I am not even sure that this is possible, and if it is, where exactly in the setup I am going wrong.
Any advice would be wonderful, as I have talked to many a person (and even drawn pictures!) at the Genius Bar, and no one is of much help...

I just went throught the same thing. My wirless was slow with my MDD and even my new iMac using older Airport Expresses and an older Airport Base station. I upgraded to a new Airport Extreme. Made a vast difference. I also got a D Link N USB wireless dongle, for use in the MDD, from Fry's and turned off the airport card. This helped even more. Now my itunes sharing works much better and video plays well. I find that video sharing works better on the MDD using Front Row instead of itunes but itunes need to be open on the host computer.

When I switch my time capsule to 5.0ghz mode the range of my wireless network drops significantly. Near the Time Capsule my Macbook Pro works fine, in my bedroom I have almost no signal. In mixed mode it works fine. Any ideas on how to get 5.0 working?

I'm not sure if you understand that 5 GHz has some upsides, but also some very significant downsides.
The upside is that the 5 GHz signal will allow faster speeds.
The downside is that you must always give up something in order to gain something else.Unfortunately, the marketing hype about 5 GHz does not go into very many details about this.
In the case of 5 GHz, the 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not travel as far or penetrate any obstructions like walls or ceilings nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. In many cases, in order to get good 5 Ghz performance, you literally have to have almost a line-of-sight relationship between your computer and the wireless router.
If you have a new dual band router, which broadcasts both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simutaneously, your Mac will connect to the best signal quality automatically depending on its location in relation to the router. In the same room, without any obstructions, it will connec to 5 GHz. But, take the laptop down the hall a few rooms and around the corner and the Mac will connect to the 2.4 GHz signal because at that location, the 2.4 GHz signal is not only stronger, it is also faster.

Can I use this DIR-635 to extend the WiFi network of the "Belgacom" WiFi?
To answer this question correctly, a user would need to have a DIR-635 router connected by Ethernet to a Belgacom router.
If you think about it, the chances of another user who has these two same devices configured this way and also being on an Apple support forum to see your post are about zero.
The following might work, but you will not know until you try.
Configure the DIR-635 to provide a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name, exact same wireless security and exact same password as the Belgacom wireless router. Make sure that the DIR-635 is configured in Bridge Mode.
Can I purchase and set-up an Apple Airport Express or Apple Airport Extreme on my level 1 (the ethernet cable running from level 2 to level 1 could plug-into either of those)
The AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme would need to be configured exactly the same way as mentioned above.
(What is the difference in the 2 -- one is about twice the price of the other…)

Using time capsule to extend the reach of my wireless network

I have a comcast router but wireless coverage only makes it halfway through my apartment. Bought a motorola router for front of apt, attached to cable and time capsule, but I'm not sure what to do next. Do I want to create a separate network or try to extend the comcast network? To make things more fun, my computer will only find the time capsule on one out of 20 scans, the other times nothing shows up. Thanks for any feedback/advice.

You need to use the airport utility on a computer.
If you use v6 utility it is fairly easy and straight forward.
The trick is to place the old TC in the same room as the new one.
Do a full factory reset and then you can just go through the utility to extend wireless network.

Then you can place the old TC about half way between the new TC and the clients would want to connect.. the half way point is not distance but wireless signal levels.
You can pick that up by using the wireless diagnostics in a mac laptop and walking around to pick up the signals.
This is for extend wireless.. if you want roaming network it is entirely different. That means they are plugged together with ethernet.

How do I resolve error 10057 when trying to set up my airport express to extend the range of my wireless network

I have a Dell XPS running on Windows 7 and use an AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi to get wireless internet access for other laptops in the home. I want to connect an AirPort Express 802.11n into the network to wirelessly extend the range of my wireless network. I have installed the AirPort Utility but when I attempt to connect to the AirPort Express, it gives me an error code 10057 and says I should check the internet connection. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP settings on my PC but that did not fix the issue. The Airport Express is also flashing yellow rather than solid green. Has anyone found a fix for this issue?

This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.

OK, thanks for the updated information. Please change your profile when you can.
If you change the network name, keep in mind that any device that connects now will need to connect again to your "new" network.
On your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit in the upper right corner of the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the screen
Edit/backspace out the current wireless network name and then type in the name that you want to use
A few hints....avoid using blank spaces, and also avoid using any special characters like an apostrophe, asterisk, dollar sign, etc. Keep the name short....no more than 20 characters, fewer would be better and simpler to manage.
Click Update at the lower right of the window and wait a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart with the new settings. You are all set now.

I get duplicate IPs error messages (no connection) sometimes when trying to connect devices to the wireless network. How do I fix? Sometimes devices cannot connect to the network because of conflicting IPs. I look on the Motorola and every device has a unique IP assigned but occasionally a device has taken the IP of another device. I have been writing down all the devices and the IPs they have been using. It happens more with PCs than Macs, ipads or iPhones.

If the Time Capsule is set up correctly in bridge mode, then it is the responsibility of the Motorola modem/router to provide the correct IP address assignments for all devices on the network.
Check to insure that the Time Capsule is correctly set up to operate in bridge mode as follows:
On your Mac, open AirPort Utility
Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Insure that the setting for Router Mode is configured to read "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Once you have confirmed that the Time Capsule is configured correctly, everything else is the responsibility of the Motorola modem/router as far as network routing and IP address assignments for devices.
If you continue to have IP address issues, then you should contact the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that provided the Motorola device to you and ask them to fix the issue.

Help with reducing the size of an image but keeping the quality

Hello,
I am wondering how do I resize an image but keep the quality. I am creating a folder design for work and I want to include 6 images on the back each of 156px x 118px.
The images I have are slightly different in size but for example sake one of the images that I have is 225px x 158px. The quality is very poor when I reduce the size.
I have tried changing the ppi to 72 and to 300, I have also tried resizing all in one go and in a number of goes and I have tried the bicubic sharpener but I have just had no luck with it.
I am wondering if anyone can help with this,

A couple of questions:
I am creating a folder design for work...
So this is printed? How large? Pixels are not a unit-of-measure for print.
If for print, you are looking at ppi of 300 or higher AT PRINT SIZE.
So, say you want a 3in x 4in picture. That would mean your original would have to be at least 900px X 1200px. (ie 300ppi x width, 300 ppi x height)
If your original files are not at least that resolution.. . it is hard to add quality after the fact. Unless your are working with vector art.

Be sure to do that on copies of original. Keep in mind the PPI number by itself is completely meaningless. It only has use in describing a to be printed image when combined with the print size.

I need help adding my printer to my home wireless network

My printer was shut down for several months. When i turned it on it was not longer connected to my wireless network. It recognizes my SSID and that of other wireless networks in the area. But I cannot get it connected to my home wireless network.
When I enter my passphrase it returns error "passphrase invalid." If I use the Push Button or PIN set-up I get the error message "WPS timed out."
I have followed the instructions useing the HP Printer set-up disc. It worked on one computer today (it printed a wireless network test report). But, then I could not find the printer on the network later. I also noticed the report does not show a IP address for the printer.
I have also been online with my internet provider and we changed my passphrase 11 times and the printer never recognized any of them. I am operating another printer wirelessly on the same system. By the way, shutting the other printer down did not seem to work. But, they both worked on the network previously.I have also added and deleted the printer several times.
The printer I am trying to add is a HP Photosmart Premium Web C309n-s
I am using a Windows 7 Operating System 64-bit on my laptop and Windows XP 32 bit on the other computers on my home wireless network,
Please help.

Difference between the 'WDS' & 'Extend a wireless network' settings?

I bought a Time Capsule & an AirPort Express with the intention of using the AirPort Express to extend the wireless signal in my home. After reading up on it a little it looked like I needed to use the 2 devices in WDS mode.
I had trouble settings it up in WDS mode & ended up doing it without.I set the Time Capsule to ‘Create wirelss network’ under the Wireless settings in AirPort Utility & the AirPort Extreme to ‘Extend a wireless network’ & it seems fine.
I’m just wondering what the difference is between this & WDS mode? And would WDS be better than what I’ve set it to now? (Would it extend the range better than the current setting?)

"Extend a wireless network" is an option only among 802.11n devices. It is much easier to set up than WDS and is potentially faster in terms of throughput because of the differences between n and g.
It's not clear to me, however, that the throughput of an "extended" network is reduced less in terms of a percentage than is that of a network extended via WDS.

Arrrrrrrrrrgh Please help me connect my itouch to my wireless network

Why can't I connect my itouch to my BT Homehub wireless network?
The itouch picks up the signal but every time I try to connect it says unable to do so. I've reset all my settings on both the itouch and the BT Homehub 2.0 and it's driving me crazy. It has previously worked, so don't understand why all of a sudden its stopped.
Was at a friends house yesterday and it connected without any problem.
Now to top it all off my Texas Hold'em game downloaded from the App store this week won't work either. I click on the icon and get the apple logo then the screen defaults back to the desktop.
I'm not very technically minded so if anyone can help me in simple terms I'd be most grateful!!!

I think this one should be a pretty simple fix since you could connect to the network previously. Resetting your network settings should fix it.
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
After your iPod restarts, you should be able to log in.

Help me reduce the woes of my wireless network...
