Help me return an iPod to its owner...

A friend of mine went on a trip and found someone had left their iPod on his plane seat and, unable to locate the previous owner on the plane, he brought it back home with him. It's a 32GB iPod with 3G capability and it's currently locked with the 4 digit pass code.
He's called AT&T and Apple who have both told him that even with the serial number of the unit, they are unable to locate the registered owner of this device. I am not inclined to believe the somewhat limited scope of knowledge that first-tier support from either AT&T or Apple would have on the matter so I'd like some pointers from anyone who might know about how to track down the owner of an iPod, bypassing the security code, and any other information anyone can give to find out how I can determine who owns this thing.
Now let me reaffirm my intent here, as it is common for people to automatically assume the worst in their fellow man and immediately conclude that I have stolen this thing or acquired it through some other devious, illicit means. I do not want to keep this iPod. This iPod is not stolen and sits here in my desk drawer with the battery dead, completely unused, and in the exact same state it was when it was found on the airline. Were I interested in keeping it, I could have easily forced the unit into restore mode and wiped it back to factory state and scored a free iPod without so much as a single thought of the prior owner. However, I state again, I do not want to keep this iPod. At all. My goal is to get the iTunes account email out of the phone so I can contact the original owner and arrange for it to be returned.
So if someone here can help reunite a rather expensive device with its real owner and point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. If an Apple employee who's high enough up on the food chain to provide some assistance by phone, let me know. Otherwise, this little paperweight will continue to be just that until I can figure out how to get around the pass code.

It would have made more sense to hand the iPod into the airline whose plane it was on. They at least, would have known who was sitting in that seat, although as Cerulean73 points out, the airline would also be breaking privacy laws if it told you who the owner was.
If I lost something on a plane, I would ask the airline if it had been found, because I would expect it to be handed into them and for me to get it back from the airline. Since the owner may well be resident somewhere else other than the USA, the phone (if it is a phone rather than an iPod Touch) may be registered on a non-USA network, and here in the UK, that could be Orange, O2, Vodafone etc, so AT&T wouldn't have a clue.

  • I found an ipad, locked of course and I want to return to its owner, but how do I do that?

How can I find the owner of an Ipad 2 I found?

that's a constructive and positive answer with a real solution.
Actually, it's complete and utter bunkum, but I guess you'll find that out when you try. Most people try the answers given before marking them as "solved".
The only possible way of returning the iPad to its owner is to hand it in to the police nearest to where you found it. That's probably one of the first places the owner went after realising they'd lost it and it was no longer where they last had it.

  • Trying to return an IPod touch I have found to its owner

I found an IPod touch on Deal beach in Kent about 3 weeks ago. For a while it had battery on it and I tried unsuccessfully to guess the passcode to get into it to find its owner. I tried so many times I logged it out completely.
i tried plugging it into a Mac to see if I could unlock it but it wouldn't acknowledge the IPod. I took it into the Apple Store in Canterbury who said it had been bought in June 2014 and that the pins in the bottom of the IPod were damaged which is why it didn't work when I plugged it into the Mac. The Store said to contact Apple customer services by phone which I did.
Apple could see it had been reported lost but couldn't give out the owners contact details, so I left my name, phone number and email address with them and asked them to pass them on. I couldn't take the IPod to a local police station as Deal's station is closed and I couldn't be sure that if I had made the drive to a bigger town to drop it off, that it would actually do any good.
I still have it. I called Apple AGAIN today to see if anyone had been in touch with them again and they said they couldn't pass my details onto the owner due to Data Protection.
IN total frustration I put the phone down and feel totally powerless to help get this expensive piece of kit back to where it belongs.
so, if anyone is reading this and thinks it may be theirs, please reply to this post and if you can answer specific questions about this IPod, I would be glad to return it to you.

    Turn it into the police.

  • I found an ipod touch with important medical information - how do I return it to its owner?

I found an ipod touch in Toronto today. No identifying info on it but possibly important medical information.
Happy to help reunite it with its owner.

    Report to police too.
Also go to Settings>iTunes and App stores and send an email to the Apple ID email address if different from the iCloud ID address.

  • I found an ipod shuffle... How can I found its owner?

I found an ipod shuffle on the beach, and I would like to return to its owner, but I don't know how to find him/her. Any suggestions?

Apple won’t help with this. If desired, take the device to the local police station.

  • I have found an iPod shuffle. I know its serial number. How do I find its owner?

I have found an iPod shuffle and so know the serial number. How do I find its owner?

I found an Ipod Shuffle and I called Apple Support desk to return it to the rightfull owner. I offered them to send my contact details to the owner. And then the owner can contact me if he likes. They refused to do this as it is a privacy issue. They advised me to bring it to the local police who can send the request to a special e-mail address of Apple. But I know that normally the police won't bother. And Apple will like this probably, as the previous owner will buy a new Apple device.

It sounds like you have a 5G Nano.  See your iPod's User Guide for information on how to delete these videos from the Nano via the Nano's interface.

  • Found an ipod and having no luck finding its owner

I found an ipod on Saturday and thus far I have posted on craigslist, our local community forum and even called the local Apple store, giving them the serial number, my name and number in hopes that they can find out who the ipod is registered to and have that person contact me to reclaim their ipod.
(I even emailed [email protected], but of course didn't hear back).
So, at this point, what else can I do to find the owner of this ipod? The ipod is locked with a passcode, so I can't open it to try to find any owner info.
Suggestions? I figure I will wait at least a full week before I force it into recovery mode and just keep it for myself, but I really want to give every effort possible in locating its owner before I do so.

My neighbor is a cop and I asked him if anyone has come by to claim it and he said no. They will just end up keeping it in a box somewhere if it goes unclaimed after a period of time.

  • My ipod states its disabled and will not function now ...  please help

ipod states its disabled and will not work or allow me to reset from itunes?  any suggesstions?

You are going to have to restore it. Scince itunes does not connect to ur ipod because its disabled you are gonna have to put your ipod in DFU mode. Basicaly u have to hold the power and home button atthe same time for 10 second then release power button and keep holding home button for about 15 seconds ( all this you do it while ipod is connected to the computer) if it works, itunes will detect ur ipod in recovery mode and will give you the option to restore it.

  • Please help !!! iPod malfunction, very frustrated

I got the black 30g vid iPod and everythime i connect it to the cp, its has no reaction:
-the do not disconnect screen does not come up
-it wont charge and the battery is dead
    -not in iTunes
    -no update
The main reason is that when i plug it in the cp it says
"one of the usb devices has malfunctioned, and is not recognized by windows, please click the messa..."
and then it stops charging from there.
I can only see it in device manager as a unknown device
it is not recognized when i go to the iPod updater or iTunes. So that wont help
i tried updateing to everything from iTunes and so on, no solution, and apple makes it to confusing for me to find a solution,
anyome else have this problem or have an idea of what to do? Please help
Or do i have to return my iPod back and if so how do i do it?

make sure all of your windows
make sure you have the latest version of the iPod software
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download
    http://www/apple.com/ipod/download
if you have already done so
    try restoring the iPod
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
if that doesnt work.. try multiple usb ports... a different cable... and possibly even a different computer to determine whether the problem is within the computer or the ipod itself....
