Help me to choose a new MacBook

I plan to buy a MacBook within next 15 days. Now I am little bit confused to choose between the two models of 13'' MacBook (new) 2.0GHz or 2.4GHz.
The 2.4 GHz model has 250 GB HDD and illuminating key board as an extra than the 2.0 GHz model. Now I can always upgrade my MacBook HDD even if i go with 160 GB model. So that is surely not a big issue. But I want to know about your views on the processor of 2.4 GHz. Is it really something that makes it much better than 2.0 GHz model? If not, it is wise to go with the 2.0 GHz model as far as the cost it concerned. Since this is going to be my first MacBook I want your views on that. Please compare the two models in a realistic manner so that I can make a good deal. My purpose is surfing, ssh to other machines, slight programming (for large programs I have access to supercomputers), lots of presentation.
I would also like to know about purchasing Apple care. It is really costly. But do you think I should go for it? I am an more or less an expert in Linux OS and computers. Personally I dont believe I need to have this. What do you think of it?

I have used the last two versions of the white Macbooks, and I now have a new 2.4 Ghz aluminum Macbook. The last version of the white Macbooks that I had was the 2.4Ghz one. It seemed to run every bit as fast as the new 2.4GHz model that I have now. Since I had 4GB of RAM in the old one (I also have 4GB in the new one) - I can give you some thoughts.
1. If you want a white or black MacBook, see if there are still refurbished ones available through Apple. The last four machines I bought were Macbooks (I've been buying them for my family members)- and every one of them were perfect and indistinguishable from new machines (other than the boxes they came in). You could get a 2.4Ghz Black Macbook this way with the same processor as the newest ones (Intel Pereyn). They run every bit as cool as the newest machines, and the memory is much cheaper (about $40 for 4GB through newegg.com as opposed to around $130 for the 4GB for the new machines). Since the hard drive interface is the same, you can easily put any size drive in them you want. I had a 320GB drive in my last white MacBook and I have a 500GB drive in my new aluminum Macbook. The battery life is different. The older model had better battery life - I would say an average of 20-35 more minutes on a charger than the newer model, and the time required to recharge the battery was much lower on the older model. Replacing RAM and the Hard drive on both models is relatively simple. The screen on the newer model is better- even if there seems to be a number of people who don't like it- I think it's fine. And yes, the older model does have firewire - which is only a must if you have legacy firewire devices or plan on using firewire in the future- I don't have either issue, and if I do need firewire connectivity I use my Desktop machine anyway. I upgraded because I had a 12" powerbook in the past, and I really liked it. The 13" aluminum Macbook seems to be the best combination of both worlds. The graphics processing on the newer machine is the NVIDIA chip as opposed to the X1300 in the older machine- but I found the older machine more the adequate for running my application suite, which ran the gambit from web surfing to full on video editing in Final Cut Pro. Hope this helps.

  • Help Me! Reservations about new MacBook. Specifically DVD drive and lack of other features.

I don’t know anything about computers or laptops and I’m hoping someone can help me with this dilemma. I want to purchase the new Macbook ‘13inch laptop but I have reservations about it not having a CD drive. I don’t play video games or anything like that where I would need a drive every day, but I would need one for the occasional DVD or TV show I want to watch. It is more of a slight inconvenience. I mean, every once in a while you need a CD to install something onto your laptop or upgrade something, right?
If I were to by an external CD drive would the retina quality still be projected through the DVD? Would the type or brand of the external drive matter?
All my previous laptops have had a DVD drive so it is hard to imagine not having one. Overall does it really matter that there is no DVD drive?
And, what else doesn’t the new Macbook have that most laptops do? I am a university student who uses it for normal use.
    Thank you!

Image quality is determined by the source, DVD, and then the display.  An external DVD player will achieve the same image quality as internal one.  Blue Ray disks and players have better picture quality but Apple does not support that format.
Many other laptops have viruses, all others have inferior trackpads, and less user friendly operating systems called windows.
    Ciao.

  • Need Help With Appleworks Files on New Macbook

    Hey Everyone,
I had an old iMac blueberry with OS 9.2 using appleworks. I just bought a MACBOOK and i got iWORK and MS OFFICE 2004 installed on it. How can i get my appleworks files to open up on my new MACBOOK.
    please help
    -

will Appleworks transfer and run on an INTEL based
    MAC?
AppleWorks 6 is a "package" that contains both a Classic (Mac OS 9) application and an OS X application. The rest of what's essential to AppleWorks 6's operation is included in the other items inside the AppleWorks 6 folder. AppleWorks will generate all needed items outside this folder when it is run.
The OS X application will operate (and operate well) on the intel based Macs using Rosetta, which is included with these machines. AW 6.2.4 and AW 6.2.9 (IN Mac OS 9, the version numbers on the splash screen and in About AppleWorks for these two are 6.2.3 and 6.2.8) are the most stable and least error prone in OS X; update before or after the transfer if you have earlier versions.
Remember also that your AppleWorks license allows for only one copy to be installed on a computer. If you want to continue to use AppleWorks on the G3 iMac, you'll need to purchase a retail copy to install on the MacBook.

    Barry

  • Need help choosing a new macbook

I want to buy a small lighter macbook. I have a 15" macbook pro. i do like it despite the MANY times it has been in for repair.
I need the smaller one for travel etc. I don't think I want the Air b/c it doesn't have a burner.
That leaves the 13" Macbook. I am on my computer many hours everyday. I do have too many photos & would like a great way to edit, save, store. I also download lots of music. I have a website and store that all on my desktop b/c my Macbook Pros burner ha not worked more that it has. I have to take it for repair again.
I would spend whatever to have everything I need in it.
Pls help me choose macbook and and things i should have configured on it.
    thx!

    hello!
the white MBs have always been dependable for me and every at my school. they work great and the new updated graphics card in the white MBs seems to be the thing you need. if you have a ton of stuff on the MB pro, the hard drive may not be big enough on he white MB, but for the price difference of an upgrade to the aluminum one, you can buy a TB of space on an external HD. not bad. the white MB has a SuperDrive. my flute teacher has a silver MB and it has a hard time picking up AirPort signals because of the metal, so the white one is better if you intend to use the AirPort frequently.
    hope that helps a bit!

p.s. here's a great case if you intend to carry around your laptop. i have it in pink and i absolutely love it!

  • Need Help Moving Aperture Library to new MacBook

I am unable to move my Aperture 3.1.1 library from my old (2008) MacBook Pro to the new one which I just got. It is a managed library.
When I try to move the library over I get the following error message +"One or more items can’t be copied to “Pictures” because you don’t have permission to read them. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?"+.
I have already Repaired Aperture Permissions and Database and Rebuilt the Database.
    Please help. Apple won't!

Niel you are a god! The files appear to be copying over after your suggestion. It will be awhile before I am sure everything is completely set as I am copying a 100GB Aperture library over firewire. However it appears this fix did the trick.
It has been a wasteful and stressful afternoon dealing with this.
    Thank You!

  • Studio 2 and choosing a new macbook pro-Moderators? Apple Advisors?

    Hi all,
Just wondering how much of a performance difference there would be using FC Studio 2 with the 15 inch 2.2GHz 128MB Video card MacBook Pro as opposed to the 15 inch 2.4GHz 256MB Video Card model. I realize the is a slight difference in processor speed, but I've read that Motion is a videoRAM hungry monster. I'd like to get adequate performance from the machine, but the $500 price difference between the two models would pay for a big chunk of my upgrade from FCE to FC Studio 2 if the 15" 2.2 would do for me. I mostly do independent video editing for local wedding videographers and motion graphics for a couple local studios and would like to be able to offer the higher end graphics without the outrageous render times with Live Type, FCE and Adobe AE on my current dual G4. Just tying to get an idea of my final cost so I can budget for it and make the most of those dollars.
    Thanks,

  • HT4007 How can I get Aperture onto my new Macbook Pro 15" Retina that DOESN'T have a superdrive from my 5 year old Macbook Pro?  I still have the CD and serial number for Aperture. HELP! PLEASE!!

Like the thread topic says. I need help getting Aperture onto my new macbook pro that does not have a drive. I have no need for a drive after this to be honest just need my programs back on it. Thanks.

    Two options:
Make a disk image or a clone of the installer CD on your Mac that has a super drive - you can create a disk image using Disk Utility or use Carbon Copy Cloner (if you have it) to clone the DVD to a thumbsdrive. Then run the installer on your MBY from this copy.
Or download the Trial Installer and install from there:
    Download the Aperture 3.1 Trial.  http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/Aperture/061-8328 .20101020.AprE3/ApertureTrial3.1.dmg
Open the Aperture Trial disc image.
    Double-click the "Aperture Trial.mpkg" file.
Follow the onscreen instructions to install Aperture.
After the installation completes, choose Software Update from the Apple () menu.
Install the Aperture 3.4 update from the list of available updates.

I got A new MacBook Air ( 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 ) before xmas, on the 20th of Dec 2014... everything was ok, Im not moving it from its table...
Since I got it, I find it really SLOW when browsing the net... my old one was like 5 years old, with an almost dead battery and it was working like it was new.... and my Bf's MacBook Pro is 2 years old and its working more than fine!
Is it me being unlucky with it ??? Is it Yosemite??
Do I have to go to have it checked ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Oana

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
Try resetting PRAM, SMC and staring up in SafeMode.
         Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761
         Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Can't Connect Via Ethernet on new MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I'm running into a frustrating problem and hoping someone can help.
I have a new MacBook Pro that won't connect via Ethernet. My old computer (Powerbook G4) with the same settings works flawlessly.
Details: under Network Settings I have Automatic/Using DHCP. When I click on Assist Me>Diagnostics, I get green lights all the way down (Built-In Ethernet, Network Settings, ISP, Internet, Server). The Diagnostics tool therefore proudly announces that my Internet connection is working correctly.
When I open Safari, however, it won't open any page. Using Ping I also get no responses.
When I plug the exact same ethernet cable into my Powerbook G4, everything works flawlessly. The only difference is that the IP address ends in .25 instead of .30 (I assume that's from the router assigning different IP addresses to the two computers.)
On another forum i read about someone having a problem with a long/lossy ethernet cable, but I just took my computer to the router and tried with a 2-foot ethernet cable. Same situation.
    Help!
    Thanks

i rebooted the firewall and it worked.

  • How can I install my CS2 upgrade to my new macbook pro?

Help! I have a new Macbook pro and an old upgrade of CS2 photoshop (upgraded from Photoshop 6). I bought these two for a PC and was told in the Mac shop that I could run them on my fancy new machine..........apparently not, it won't install classic photoshop 6 as presumably it's too old. I also have CS2 Indesign but can't find the install button to press for that either......Am I screwed? I can't afford new programmes.

CS2 is the oldest version that can be upgraded to CS5. You may want to do that now before you lose the opportunity when CS6 comes out. You can upgrade and crossgrade to CS5 for Mac.
    Another thought...
I run CS2 for Windows on Linux through Wine. It works fine. You could probably install Wine on Mac and do the same.
The salespeople might have been referring to running your Windows software on Mac with a virtual machine... with the help of such apps as VMWare Fusion or Parallels. These let you run Windows on top of Mac OS X without rebooting into a Windows partition. See the marketing line: "It Runs Windows Too".

  • Brand New MacBook Pro and Display Adaptor Issue

Hello fellow Mac users, I've been a long-time Mac user and owner.
I just got a new MacBook Pro after using a 2006 model for 2 years and am having a display adapter issue that I need help and advice with:
The new MacBook Pro has the mini DVI display connector, my non-Apple external display is does not support the mini DVI, no problem there, I bought the display adaptor...
Except that it doesn't fit the adaptor that fit the 2006 MacBook Pro.
    Please See Image at Link:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/sdjOcw1jrddqtAfjAU0Trw?feat=directlink
File comment: This is the adaptor that connected my 2006 MacBook Pro to the the display. It changes the connection from the Mac's DVI to fit the VGA connection of my display. There are the four extra pins around the flat pin to the left of the connector.
Somehow the male end of the mini DVI to the full-size DVI adaptor doesn't fit the female end of the full-size DVI to VGA adaptor! Please see the images. It seems a few extra pins prevent the connection!
    Please See Image at Link:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/4bG788QVKGCOIJUkzHcjKg?feat=directlink
Comment: This is where the problems begin. The flat portion lacks the four holes needed for the DVI to VGA adaptor to connect.
Is it possible to just remove the four offending pins in the Full Size DVI to VGA Male End?
Any help or suggestions highly appreciated, because as of now, my brand new MacBook Pro is less useful than the 2006 model, which can connect to my external display.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi Rob with a Mac and welcome to the boards.
My suggestion would be that you simply take the adaptor back and get a mini-display port to VGA adaptor instead.
I ran into a similar problem myself recently when I wanted to connect my own MBP13 to an overhead projector. I had assumed that I could use the mini display to DVI adaptor that I use for the DVI capable external monitor with my new MacBook, combined with a DVI to VGA adaptor that I had for my 2007 MBP, connected to a VGA cable to do the job, but this is not possible.
MiniDisplay to VGA adaptors for the newer MBPs are readily available at Apple dealers or through the online store and not too expensive.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • New MacBook air and Iphone 4 won't connect via CABLE

    Hi, hoping someone can help.
I bought a new MacBook Air a few days ago however when I insert my USB cable to connect it to my Iphone 4 to sync to my Itunes it will not recognise or charge the device, let alone sync. It simply flickers between charge and not charge so seems to be connecting for 0.2 of a second then goes off instantly afterwards- which allows many warning notices to appear on my macbook air. I have no idea what to do and I cannot even sync to Itunes.
My Iphone still works and syncs with my other PC and the cable is in good working order......
    Any response would be fantastic.
    Regards

If the phone still syncs to the other computer and you are using the same cable then the problem must involve the computer. Try performing a reset of NVRAM and PRAM.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • How to transfer Address Book from old iMac to new MacBook Pro?

I will soon be getting a MacBook Pro 15" Intel Core i5 with Snow Leopard and want to transfer my Address Book from my old 2003 iMac flat 15" panel running 10.4.11. What is the best way to do that? Is there a particular file or folder that I can copy onto a flash drive to transfer to the new computer? Or can I use my Mobile Me Backup that is on my external drive (or on CD) to do it even though the Backup on the new computer would be a newer version from the older Backup that has the data? I would like to avoid having to use the Migration Assistant if I can, since it looks like that is designed to transfer whole categories of files (like all "files and folders", etc.), which I don't want to do. Thanks in advance for the help.

When I bought my new MacBook Pro, the sales person showed me how to do the V-card method that you suggested. I tried it at home, and it worked. I have been worrying for years about the best way to do this, so was very relieved to find such a simple method. David Pogue in the Tiger Missing Manual also mentioned another tip which I used: he said to select all the address entries you want to transfer (in my case it was all of them) and then just drag the whole lot out onto the desktop. A V-card icon appeared that said: "Name of Person plus 344 others". I then copied that to a flash drive and then onto the new computer desktop. I then dragged it into the Address Book window. As you said it was done in a matter of seconds. Thank you so much!

I messed up badly by trying to restore my brand new macbook pro by doing restart then command R and choose disc utility repair now when I start ,all I get is the white screen with a folder and a question mark,What can I do???help please

Can you still boot to the Recovery partition using Command and R whilst booting? Or did you wipe the Recovery partition as well?
If your Recovery partition is still intact, you can simply boot to it and reinstall the OS via the Internet. If you wiped the Recovery partition, you can hold down Command, option and R keys whilst booting and boot into true Internet Recovery mode. You'll be able to reformat the hard drive, erasing all partitions (format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a dingle GUID partition) and then reinstall the OS that shipped with your machine.
Note that you should use a physical Ethernet connection when restoring over the Internet - it's three times slower if you use wifi.
Try your Recovery partition first and if that doesn't work, use Internet Recovery.
