Help me troubleshoot my iMac | random SPOD and freezes

ok, I am 1 step away from literally throwing this iMac out the window, but maybe someone has got an advice before I do so.
In the beginning of 2009, my iMac's harddrive went bad.
I was able to rescue everything via target mode so no big deal. I went and bought a new harddrive for it and replaced it myself. I found a very good guide for the whole procedure and after that I installed a fresh copy of OSX 10.4 on it.
Since then the system would start to do random freezes, sometimes for all running applications, and sometimes for just one or two simultaneously.
The freezes normally lasts between 10 seconds to 4 minutes and I have so far (1 year later) not been able to discover any kind of logic/pattern in these freezes.
Sometimes I can run a plethora of programs at the same time (iMovie, Photoshop, Quicktime, Safari, Pages etc) and everything goes fine for hours. Some times it will take me minutes to just launch Safari or Textmate.
Now, it isn't as though I haven't tried doing anything about it, it just that so far nothing have worked out.
Here is a list of things I have tried since it started in 2009
- Running Repair Permissions (Disk Utility or holding down SHIFT when booting)
- Running maintenance programs like Onyx, MacJanitor, Maintenance, iTools
- Fixing font issues using FontBook, LinoType and FontNuke
- Replacing/Upgrading RAM (I went from 1gb to 3gb)
- Testing RAM with memtest
- Running Disk Warrior
- Disabling various processes/services (spotlight/mds etc.)
- Uninstalling/upgrading/downgrading programs (mostly programs that I use alot like Firefox and Safari)
- Upgrading the OS (first to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard)
- Re-installing OS X (I have tried different combinations like re-installing to Tiger, then upgrading to Leopard and SL, re-installing to Leopard without upgrading etc.)
There might be more but I really cannot remember.
Of course my focus has been mainly on the harddrive itself since this was the piece that got replaced, but everytime I run Disk Warrior or Onyx or any other diagnostics app I have come across, I am told that the harddrive is doing fine.
In the middle of 2009 I then created a 50gb partition on which I installed Win XP. This was because of some work related software that I needed to run. Now, on Win XP I have yet to experience any problems relating to the one I have on OSX. (Of course there are problems with Win XP, but none of them were relating to my specific issue here).
So as it is right now, and have been for too long, I'm better off running Win XP than I am running SL, and that just ****** me off..!
Does anyone here have an idea about what to do next?
I have thought about buying a new harddrive to replace the initial replacement drive, but if that is the only choice I have left, I would rather save up for a new iMac instead.
I have already spent more than enough trying to fix this one.
Here are some details about the system:
Model-id: iMac5,1
Processor name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor speed: 2.16 GHz
Processors: 1
Cores: 2
L2-buffer: 4 MB
Memory: 3 GB
Bus speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM-version: IM51.0090.B09
SMC Version: 1.9f4
OS Version: 10.6.2
Some of these are roughly translated by me from Danish.
Thanks to the people still reading this.

Hi Kguy,
Thank you for the reply.
The freezes happens when opening programs and when running them. And it happens with (as far as I know) all programs on the computer (including TimeMachine, Dashboard apps, Finder, login in/logging out etc.)
As far as I know this is not related to my network, but I will try you suggestion and disconnect the computer fully before running programs on the computer.
Sometimes when the freezes happen, everything on the computer freezes, even the seconds on the clock.
And if I am watching something in Quicktime/VLC/DivX and a freeze happens. After the freeze is over Quicktime will then resume x amount of time later in the movie. Where x is equal to the amount of time the froze lasted.
Hope this helps clarifying

  • My imac randomly restarts and then takes 45 minutes to load.  What can I do to fix it?

I upgraded to Mavericks as soon as it released a few weeks ago.  This is the only change I've made, no new programs or apps otherwise.  Last week my imac randomly restarted and then took 45 minutes to load.  It's done this about 5 times in the last week.  I need some help resolving this.
I've gone through the disk utility to repair/verify the hard drive, and it's done nothing to solve this issue.
I do have a time machine and am wondering if it would be too drastic to reformat and restore from the time machine.
Any help would be appreciated!  I have work to do!

  • Please help! Safari keeps hanging/not responding and freezes everything else up.

I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and Safari (5.1.9) keeps hanging/crashing. I'm afraid I'm not very good with these things so I'll just have to tell the story...
It's happening when I start up Safari, either the home page (Google) doesn't fully load and the pinwheel appears, or it loads but as soon as I try to search or use bookmarks the pinwheel appears. I'm unable to quit Safari, open or close Finder or any software, and it won't shut down normally either. I've tried using Cmd-Option-Esc to Force Quit but the pinwheel appears again and nothing happens. The only option left is to do a hard shut down. After repeating this 5 or 6 times it eventually lets me use Safari, but will almost always hang again unexpectedly at some point during the day. I know this isn't the best way to deal with it but I don't know what else to do!
I'm sorry if this question has already been asked and answered, but because I don't have an error report I don't know whether my issue is the same and don't want to start messing with things when I'm not sure what I'm doing. Thanks in advance for your help!
P.S. The unexpected hanging and freezing started while I was running Leopard and an older version of Safari. I tried to back up and reinstall the OS but my optical disk drive wouldn't read the disk, so I had to take it to an Apple store where they couldn't find anything wrong but installed Snow Leopard and hoped that fixed the problem. It didn't, and it's since started happening on start up, as described above.

Open Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairing, you will need to use the install disc(s) that came with your Mac.

  • IMac loudly whirs and freezes. please help!

I have a 27" iMac purchased November 2009. Have tried searching discussions for help but am unsure what to call the problem as it is so peculiar!
Several times an hour it makes a strange loud whirring noise (which does not appear to be a fan to me as it is not a smooth sound, sounds more like a hard drive 'thinking' possibly?? but I have no idea) and freezes until the noise stops (which generally takes anywhere between 10-30 seconds). Very frustrating as it interupts my workflow and all I can do is wait it out. It does not seem to matter how many/which applications are running. it happens when i have creative suite open but then it also happens if all i have open is chrome!
It is within warranty, however I have no time to take it to be fixed until November as I can't be without it until then, so am hoping someone will have a suggestion to help me out!
I don't know what other information would be helpful, but just in case, it has 4GB of RAM and has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and still has about 775GB of hard drive space free.
would doing a fresh install of my OS help?
any advice you can give me would be appreciated! or point me towards an existing discussion (all i could find were people describing their whirring noise as a buzzing, and mine is definitely not buzzing)

My first thought would be the hard drive, you may not have time to get it check out until November
but think about what you might loose if you don't. Just have a great backup plan for a just
    incase scenario
If its not a harddrive, what ever you have going on is not good, as your aware of, you need to
reevaluate and think about if you lost what you have verses not having access to your files.
I assume you have contacted Apple support on the phone, to see what they might have to say
Its nothing to fool with in my opinion

  • 4s random crashes and freezes, even with DFU restore

I have a 3 week old 4s and have since had to take the phone to Fresno genius bar three times. My phone has had random crashes (preferences, mobile safari, messages, app store, words). Each time I was told that a DFU restore would fix this problem. The last they did was on Dec 21. It is now Dec 27 and my phone has crashed 6 times with the last one requiring a hard reset as the phone froze while using Safari. I understand that phones are computers and it will crash at times. However, this is a 3 week old phone, it has been less than a week from a full restore, and there does not seem to be a pattern on which apps crashes. I also clear my unused apps (double click home button and clear apps on the background) every day, so it's not like memory is tied up. And besides, a 4s shouldn't be concerned about that, right. I also have several friends that have 4Ss and have had not had this problem to the extent I've had so far? Have any of you guys experienced this?

The symptoms that you describe could definitely be caused by a failing power supply unit (PSU).  It can cause many problems that don't appear to be related to the PSU.  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot it.
Here is a guide to help you test the hard driver using the SMART diagnostics in the BIOS.
Test the memory by removing all of the modules and replacing them one at a time and booting.  Place the single memory module in the slot closest to the Processor.

  • Random restarts and freezes. Just upgraded my RAM trying to diagnose new RAM as the problem but they pass Rember test.

Hey so I have been dealing with random reboots and computer freezes since upgrading my RAM. I also reinstalled my 10.8.2 at the same time I upgraded my RAM. I have a Mac Mini Mid 2011 with the OWC Data Doubler Kit and a Crucial M4 128GB Boot drive. My computer reboots every 30 minutes or so and sometimes completely freezes up. I am trying to figure out if the new RAM is the issue as I can send them back. I have ran several Rember RAM tests but the computer freezes mid test so I can not see the issue. All other times it completeles the RAM test with no issues.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.

  • Imac keep crashing and freezing up when I open browsers and program

Hi, I have some problems for my Imac. I don't know why when I open my browsers and some program keep crashing and freezing up.
Any one can help this problem? Or should I follow any step can solve this problem? Thanks a lot!

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

    Hi laf66,
Has the Vista Firewall been set up to allow AIM6.exe as an Exception ?
This is the XP method http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service
How is your router or routing modem set up to allow the AIM ports as opposed to the iChat ones ?
AIM needs to be using UPnP or have ports 1024-5000 allowed.
(don't ask me how AIM and iChat work the ports out but they do)

  • M8430f Desktop with random crashes and freezes

Have had this problem for about a year now. Someone suggested checking the power supply, but I think it's pretty consistent. Sometimes the computer freezes all together, sometimes I get a blue screen... It could happen as often as twice per day, or as infrequently as once a month.
I'm sure there is a memory dump file, but I don't know where it is or what I'd do with it. Someone also suggested Event Viewer, which I found, but again, didn't know what to do with.
I think some memory or the hard drive could be bad. Possibly small sectors, so the crashes only happen when those sectors are accessed. I'll add that two weeks ago I did a clean install of Windows 7, so it's not the operating system.
Any help is appreciated! I'm just trying to find out WHY it crashes.

  • Iphone 5 locks up and does random things and freezes

I have an iphone 5 that randomly freezes, starts apps on it's own, types when I am not typing, video goes astray when playinmg games.  I am ready to throw this thing out the window.  I called Apple Support and they said it is a software glitch.  I tried multiple time restoring from computer backup and from Icloud but symtoms don't go away.  Has this happened to anybody else?  How do you fix it@

Hi...thanks for the advice but it still has random things happening and gets unresponsive. I have backed up and restored from my computer and the cloud. Neither worked. I resorted to erasing the phone and starting as a new phone but I am getting the same random problems. For example, i open the camera app but I  can't take a picture. If I touch the escape button on the top of the phone and open the same app I sometimes can take a picture.
Forget about playing games with graphics. Nothing responds well with games.  The weirdest thing is when you launch email and the phone just starts typing random characters and letters.
I think I have to bite the bullet and get s replacement phone.
PS i use a lifeproof case and the problem occurs randomly with or without the case.

  • IMac picture pixilated and freezes up on start up.

When I start my iMac it seems to start ok at first, then the screen gets pixilated and freezes up.  Some times I can get further in the start up process than others. I did just update to OS 10.10.3.
    Mac (21.5-inch, Late 2009)
    3.3GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8GH Memory
      Processor Name: I
      Number of Processors: 1
      Total Number of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz

I had to make an OS 10.10.3 Start Up Disk and reboot using that. I checked the disk for any damage then restored from Time Machine Back up. Seems to be working better.

  • HELP!!!  iPhone randomly reset and now it won't detect SIM card?

Ok so here's what I was doing when this all happened.
I had called the Linksys support for a new router I just bought that wasn't working right. After waiting about 8 mins I was connected to a gentlmen in India, we worked on my problem for about 10mins or so and then all of sudden my phone just reset, or at least went to the apple logo and just sat there.
then after 30 seconds it started ringing (before it fully restarted) and it was the tech gentlemen call me back. So I slide the thing to answer and the screen froze with the slider on the right but not unlocked but I could see the time and my back ground, just no buttons and I could still hear him and talk to him.
After we fix my problem with the router he hung up, but my phone was still froze and then it started ringing (a friend had tried to call me before it reset while I was on the phone so I assume it was him again). I couldn't answer and it just kept ringing and ringing so I held the wake button and slide the red slider to shut it off.
Left it off for 30 seconds or so then press and held it again to turn it on. Now it says restore need, connect to itunes!
ok, so I did and after wait about 30sec to a minute after connecting it to itunes it comes up with this error:
*"iTunes cannot activate your iPhone because the SIM card is not inserted or a SIM PIN is required. Disconnect your iPhone, make sure the SIM card is inserted correctly and, if you use a SIM PIN, tap Unlock to enter it, and then reconnect your iPhone."*
What the heck?! I've had it randomly reset once before about a month and a half ago and which point I did have to restore, and it did and it worked fine after that.
The SIM card IS in there, and I have no idea what my SIM PIN would be, nor do I see the option for it they speak of! And this happened about 9:30pm, well after any Apple or AT&T stores are closed! I even turned off the phone, took the SIM card out and put it back and it still did the same thing!
What would cause this to randomly just mess-up like this? I loved this phone when I got it but now that this is the 2nd time this has happened and much worse I'm pretty ticked about it. And it's not like I hacked it or unlocked it or whatever that is even called, the only things I've put on my iphone are music, pictures, and programs I all got thru itunes!
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hi Guys,
I'm writing this from the UK. Got an iPhone 3G bought a few weeks ago and activated (no jailbreak or other stuff)it. It worked fine but last night it gave the same error as originally reported in this thread.
Went into the O2 store (this is the provider selling iPhones in the UK) and they told me is the SIM card. Got a new one but still the same...
There is something going on here because I've seen lots of claims with the exact same description. Its almost like there is a bug in the software that gets activated on the 3rd of January.
Will go tomorrow again and ask for a new phone.

  • Intel iMac Randomly restarts, and delayed boot-ups when powered on from off

First, bought the iPod (20gig w/ photo display). Love it. Still use it. Never a problem.
Then bought a MacBook in '06. Love it. Only a few problems along the way but easily fixed.
So, based on that, bought the 20" aluminum intel-iMac (2.4GHz, 2GB memory, 320HD)in October. Loved it. Never a problem. Not one. Until...
...I installed Leopard. What a headache. I've solved all of the problems with help from the forum etc. except one:
iMac waits 3-20 minutes before it feels like "waking up" after I've powered it on, and when it does finally boot-up into OS it restarts upon a whim, sometimes after half an hour or so and sometimes after just a few minutes. Problem.
After searching the discussions and reading through the posts I can't find a solution.
    Any suggestions?
(There's nothing external connected to iMac except the keyboard. There are no 3rd party upgrades. All updates successfully downloaded. And I've unplugged the power cord several times. It is the only way to get the iMac to power on and, eventually, boot up again.)
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Tulliver

    Thanks for the reply, Dennis.
I was able to try the SMC instructions and use Disk Utility before posting my question. It didn't help.
Since posting my question I talked to the Apple guys where we purchased our iMac and after discussing the problems they're quite certain it is a hard drive problem. I take it in tomorrow.
The problem with my post is that I left out the most glaring symptom (good thing I am not a doctor).
My Mac's start-up disk is not named "Macintosh HD". It was. Now it is named ""?????????. So, even though both "Repair Disk" and "Apple Hardware Test" came up just fine, no problems, there is something wrong with my Startup Disk. I had hoped upgrading to Leopard using the "erase and install" method would fix the problem. It didn't. And I just now brought the iMac to its original "Tiger" state and the startup Disk is still called ""?????????. The Apple guys say HD problem. They'll figure it out for certain on Monday.
Thank goodness for back-up hard drives.
Thanks again Dennis for your input.

  • Need help with troubleshooting VPN betwen Cisco 2911 and Dell Sonicwall 4060

    Hello all,
I am trying to set up a VPN Tunnel between the devices mentioned above.  The tunnel appears to be established, but I've encountered some issues along the way.  I can ping from the Cisco 2911 to a server behind the Sonicwall, but I cannot ping from that server to the Cisco router unless the router is pinging the server at the same time.  What should I do to fix this problem?
UPDATE:  The tunnel is no longer working between the two devices.  The end result I am looking for is to have a VPN tunnel between these two devices which does NAT and allows me to ping across without having to constantly ping to keep the session open.  Before the tunnel went down, I was able to ping that server behind the sonicwall using a port on the inside of the firewall as a source port for the ping, and at one point I was able to ping back to the router from the server, but was unable to ping beyond that interface.  I think the problem that I am running into has to do with the zone-based firewall configurations that are already on the router.  I don't want to mess with those configurations already in place, but I am not sure how to get this tunnel working.  I'm fairly certain I need to start from the beginning in regards to this tunnel, but I cannot figure out how to configure this the right way.
Thanks in advance for any help

Finally the testing is successful on Sonicwall NSA 240 as well with Cisco ASA. Actually somehow Sonicwall firewall was discovering my VPN Box's Public leg (Private IP (10.10.50.10)) as well, which was behind a Live Peer IP (203.124.x.x). As per security policies it shouldnt have been discovered on the remote end. i will bring this in Cisco TAC notice.
Logs of Sonicwall were showing ASA local ike id as "203.124.x.x" & ASA Remote ike id "10.10.50.10".
Sonicwall sets these two parameters with PSK (local ike id & remote ike id). This is other than setting the Peer IP. i asked my client to add my ASA actual and NAT IP in these two parameters and the VPN got UP.

  • IMac Printer Timout and Freeze on Epson 1400

I have an iMac 2.8 Intel Core 2 Duo. Its an incredible machine but every time I print a long design on the machine it stops without finishing. I have called Epson but they said it might be my USB connection. I shorten the cord to a 6 foot cord and still I have problems. You see we print high end films for screen printing and need to be able to print 13"x18" sheets of film. The printer usually stops at about 15" with 3" unprinted. I could really use your help! We might even work out some shirts!
