Help me with my java code

i have an assignment from the book java programming d.s malik.
problem:
for research purposes and to assist students, the admissions office of your local university wants to determine the performance of the female and male students in certain courses. You receive a file that contains female and male students' GPAs for certain courses. Due to confidentiality, the letter code f is used for female and m is used for male. every file entry consists of a letter code followed by a GPA. each line has one entry. the number of entries in the file is unknown. write a program that computes and outputs the average gpa for both female and male students. format your result to two decimal places.
solution:
this is what i have come up with:
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
class Assignment6
     public static void main(String[] args)
                              throws FileNotFoundException
           String str,
                     gender;
           double counter = 0;
           double counter2 = 0;
           double gpa = 0;
           double sum1, sum2;
           double average1, average2;
           Scanner console = new Scanner(System.in);
           Scanner inFile = new Scanner(new FileReader("gpa.txt"));
           PrintWriter outFile = new PrintWriter("gpa.out");
           gender = inFile.next();
           gpa = inFile.nextDouble();
           while(gender.charAt(0) != 'x')
                if(gender == 'm')
                    sum1+= gpa;
                   counter = counter + 1.0;
                   average1 = sum1/counter;
               else if(gender == 'f')
                    sum2+= gpa;
                    counter2 = counter2 + 1.0;
                    average2 = sum2/counter2;
           System.out.println("The count is " + counter);
           System.out.println("The average is = " + average1);
           System.out.println("The count is " + counter2);
           System.out.println("The average is = " + average2);
          outFile.print("There are " + counter + " male students.");
         outFile.printf("Average GPA for male students is: " + average1);
         outFile.print("There are " + counter2 + " female students.");
         outFile.printf("Average GPA for female students is: " + average2);
         outFile.close();
}and the text file is
gpa.txt
m 2.4
f 3.2
m 3.7
m 4.0
f 2.9
f 1.8
f 3.8
m 1.7
m 3.4
f 2.6
m 2.8
m 1.7
f 3.7
m 3.9
f 4.0
f 3.6
m 2.3
f 2.9
m 3.0
m 2.7
x
question:
i couldn't compile and run it, i get 2 errors:
M:\School\CSCI - 111 - Classwork\Assignments\Java1\Assignment6.java:29: incomparable types: java.lang.String and char
               if(gender == 'm')
               ^

               else if(gender == 'f')
thanks

okay i did everything, but i still couldn't get it to work. i wonder if im using a wrong solution. or is there anything i didn't know before even proceeding into this?

    If you call GO () you get in an infinite loop. max gets decreased, and it loops while max is smaller then or equal to size * size. Is your looping logic correct ?

  • How doest jdk docs help as in writing java code?

    hi i wonder how does jdk docs help as in writing java code because if i google a java code the jdk docs always becomes the result of my search but in my experience jdk docs never helps me.
    is there any one know how to use jdk docs? and how to get the code from there.
    im telling about jdk docs from here http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.4.2/docs/api/

    Your question still does not make any sense, and you still haven't clarified what you're not understanding.
    However, if you think that just by reading the API docs, with no other training or study, that you will be able to write that code, then you are seriously misunderstanding the purpose of the docs.
    Obviously English is not your native language. You grew up speaking some other language at home and with your friends, and at some point in school or as private study, you started to learn English. You learned about the grammar and the alphabet and pronunciation, sentence structure, word order, etc. Now you have the basics of how the language works, and you know some words. When you want to learn new words to fit into the structure you have learned, you use a dictionary.
    If you didn't study the grammar, sentence structure, etc., and just said, "I want to learn English. I will look at a dicationary," clearly that would not work.
    Right?
    So, since you now understand and agree with the English example, let me state something that I hope is obvious to you by now: The API docs are your dictionary. They are not a substitute for learning the language basics.
    Furthermore, once you know the language basics in English and have your dictionary, you still won't know how to write a resume (which you may know as a CV). You will look at examples and perhaps take a course on resume (CV) writing. Just reading a dictionary won't help you write a resume(CV). Similarly, if you know some Java basics, you can't learn how to write a Swing app just by reading the Javadocs. You'll look at tutorials and examples. Then, once you know the basic structure of a Swing app, you'll look to the javadocs for more details about more kinds of GUI classes--different buttons and windows and panes and panels and layout managers, etc.

  • Problems with backing Java Code

    Earlier I manually deleted the processChange event handler method for a textfield from the backing java code. As I had no plans to use that event handler. Now my page abends with a message stating that the process chnage method is not available. I tried to add via the event handler for the textbox using the GUI but it does not add the process change event handler method. Using an another process change method as a model I manually entered the code to handle process change for the text bos. Now I am getting an internal server exception - Null in one of the parameters. PLEASE HELP. What are my options - Delete and re-create the entire page

    Hi,
    Yes I am using the recommeded code: The Text field generating the null exception is addDataSourceTF. Whenever we click on the addDataSourceBTN we get an Internal exception.
    Thanks very much for looking into this problem. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    2 things:
    1. Always surround your code with [ code] [ /code] blocks (without the spaces) - otherwise no one can read what you are doing.
    2. Will the following work for you? From your description it is pretty much impossible to tell what you are actually having problems with...
    System.out.println("Part No." +"\t"+ "Quantity." +"\t"+ "Cost Price." +"\t"+ "Retail Price.");
    System.out.println(input_part +"\t"+ "\t" + qty[input_part-1] + "\t" + cost[input_part-1] + "\t" + retail[input_part-1] + "\n");

  • JVM 1.4 seg faults with pure java code?

    Has anybody else seen JVM 1.4 seg fault when running pure java code? This seems like it shouldn't be possible, but I get the following at indeterminate times. Unfortunately, it is difficult to isolate since decreasing the size of the program avoids the problem. When the seg fault happens, the size in memory is ~1GB and there is plenty of real and virtual memory to spare.

    Did you figure out a workaround for this problem?. Did you get it solved with the SUN people?. Is it a known bug?.
    I've got exactly the same problem on the same function and VM library.
    Any info on this is very much welcome.
    Thx
    Krithiga
    I get the same error sometimes with tomcat-4.0.4 on a
    Slackware 8.0.0 and JDK 1.4.0. I don't user any JSPs,
    only servlets and the business calls a remote SLSB on
    a remote JBOSS server and afterwards select some data
    form a remote DB2 7.1 over JDBC.
    Here is the log:

  • Help needed with operating java on other programs

    I have a fairly difficult (I think) question.
    I am trying to create a program to enact itself on other programs.
    It needs to perform 4 functions.
    1) Open an exe (such as notepad)
    2) Use the exe to open another file (such as a .txt)
    3) Find the color of a specific pixel on the screen (ie, (300,800)) and
    4) Pull a number from a field in the program
    I would apprieciate any help on this, whether in the form of an answer, or a url that could help me with it.
    thanks

    you could try shell commands to the dos prompt like:
    try {
         Properties systemProps = System.getProperties();
         String osVersion = systemProps.getProperty("os.name");
         if (osVersion.equals("Windows 98"))     {
              Runtime.getRuntime().exec("start \"notepad"");
         else if (osVersion.equals("Windows 95"))     {
              Runtime.getRuntime().exec("start \"notepad"");
         else {  // win nt (2000 or xp)
              Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe /c notepad");
         }catch(IOException err) {}Or locate the notepad.exe and use the runtime class to launch it, to open a txt file is exactly the same but substitute the txt file name instead of notepad, that should launch notepad and open the txt in it, if you mean open notepad and then control it and open a file, that java can?t do, need another language to do it or work with another language and java together. Not sure about the rest,

  • Needed help with updating java code

    Hello all,
    Let me begin by let you know I am not a programmer and I have tried to solve this by reading on the net. I am a network admin so I tech knowledge but no programming.
    I have a webcam sending a Jpg to an FTP site and there I have used an applet called view.class to refresh once a second.
    site:http://70.154.170.253/webcamold.html
    My problems is now that it refreshes the same image over and over. It refreshes the cached image not the new image.
    From reading I suspect that it has to do with the newer version of java (it used to work fine).
    I have tried using JavaCam but same issue it just refreshes cached image. Also image flickers, the applet I am trying to fix was really smooth.
    I have also tried to compile code that I found on this forum but I got error dealing with deprecated code.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Code:
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.io.PrintStream;
    public class View extends Applet
    implements Runnable
    public void init()
    setBackground(Color.white);
    String s = getParameter("refresh");
    if(s == null)
    update = 30;
    else
    try
    update = Integer.parseInt(s);
    catch(Exception _ex)
    update = 30;
    filename = getParameter("picture");
    if(filename == null)
    System.out.println("No filename given as parameter.");
    md = new MediaTracker(this);
    off = createImage(size().width, size().height);
    refreshImage();
    public void paint(Graphics g)
    g.drawImage(off, 0, 0, this);
    public void update(Graphics g)
    paint(g);
    public void refreshImage()
    img = getImage(getDocumentBase(), filename);
    md.addImage(img, 0);
    try
    md.waitForID(0);
    catch(Exception exception)
    exception.printStackTrace();
    Graphics g = off.getGraphics();
    g.drawImage(img, 0, 0, this);
    img.flush();
    public void run()
    while(th != null)
    try
    refreshImage();
    repaint();
    Thread.sleep(update * 1000);
    catch(Exception exception)
    System.out.println("Error when thread was supposed to sleep: " + exception.getMessage());
    public void start()
    if(th == null)
    th = new Thread(this);
    try
    th.start();
    return;
    catch(Exception exception)
    System.out.println("Couldn't start thread: " + exception.getMessage());
    return;
    } else
    return;
    public void stop()
    if(th != null)
    th.stop();
    th = null;
    public void destroy()
    stop();
    public View()
    update = 30;
    Thread th;
    String filename;
    int update;
    Image img;
    Image off;
    MediaTracker md;

    This is compile error free code and regarding your issues i don't think am good at this stuff
    import java.applet.Applet;

  • Please help me with JACOB: Java-Com Bridge

    While experimenting with Jacob 1.13, I am not even able to run the sample code that comes with the source package. I get an error as below:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: createInstanceCan you help?
    And, is there another way to access MS Word? Basically what I want to do is search and find some text in Word documents and apply some styles to it.
    Thanks in advance for your advice!

    I am guessing that underneath the code you see, it uses the MS Word DLLs to emulate MS Word. So if you don't actually have Word installed in your machine you won't be able to do this.

  • Please HELP me with installation - java.lang.noclassdeffounderror:

    Please Help! For school we need to install JAVA. I installed JDK 5.0 and id did not work. I got exception in thread "main" java.lang.noclassdeffounderror: hello. I was using Texpad to write, compile, and run it. In short I deleted all JAVA 5.0 using My Computer program removal. I installed JAVA 1.4..2_10 and I am still getting that same error. I want the JAVA 1.4..2_10 to be installed and not JAVA.5.0.
    My System Variable CLASSPATH still shows C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\lib\ext\QTJava.zip. My System Variable PATH has nothing as far as JAVA in it. MY PATHEXT has JS and JSE amoung other things in it. My System Variable QTJAVA still has Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\lib\ext\QTJava.zip in it.
    Please tell me step-by-step how I can fix this. I never updated these variables before. What do I need to type and where? What do I need to get rid of or change?
    PLEASE HELP!
    Thanks,
    Jim

    I left my System variable classpath --> C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\lib\ext\QTJava.zip I left my QT JAVA --> C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\lib\ext\QTJava.zip I added Path --> ;C:\j2sdk1.4.2_10\bin and then restarted my computer. I added hello file in C:\j2sdk1.4.2_10\bin and tried to compile it under a new name and it would not compile. it gave me the error below. I was able to compile other java program in my other folder in a different directory. I am still getting the same error messages/ Anything else I should try? IS there anyplace or person I can call who would come and fix this? Something is wrong. This should not be giving me this much trouble. All The Java directions on other websites tell me to do different things. I am so confused... please help.
    I get this during the compilenow:
    javac: invalid flag: C:\j2sdk1.4.2_10\bin\helloa.txt
    Usage: javac <options> <source files>
    where possible options include:
    -g Generate all debugging info
    -g:none Generate no debugging info
    -g:{lines,vars,source} Generate only some debugging info
    -nowarn Generate no warnings
    -verbose Output messages about what the compiler is doing
    -deprecation Output source locations where deprecated APIs are used
    -classpath <path> Specify where to find user class files

    -bootclasspath <path> Override location of bootstrap class files
    -extdirs <dirs> Override location of installed extensions
    -d <directory> Specify where to place generated class files
    -encoding <encoding> Specify character encoding used by source files
    -source <release> Provide source compatibility with specified release
    -target <release> Generate class files for specific VM version
    -help Print a synopsis of standard options
    Tool completed with exit code 2

    If you can fix this I will give you 14 points. I hope it is enough. I just want this to work for school.

  • Help needed with JNI -  java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError
