Help, mistake made in Disk Utility

I hit Delete Free Space thinking it would do something else... It used all my free space up. I need help on how to get it back. It said something like It puts a 0 for each file so no hidden deleted files could remain on the HD. I now have 0 free space LoL

Using disk utility to change the size of the partitions on the hard drive results in all your data being lost. You can reformat with a free partition.
Please note you'll will not be able to use the free space at least with the disk utility. Disk utility will not allow you to reclaim the space with out the loss of all your data . You can use the terminal commands to reclaim the space or Linux tools.
From the point of view of disk utility, free space is a partition. So, if you want one data partition & one free partition set up on your hard drive. Choose to have two partitions. click on the second partition. Look at the format field. Click on the double arrow and select free space.

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • How do you restore a password on a locked folder made in disk utility?

how do you restore a password on a locked folder made in disk utility?

    Hello there, HoseDwellers.
The following Knowledge Base article as a great step by step instructional on how to change the password for the account:
OS X: Changing or resetting an account password
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
Resetting a user's password in OS X Lion and Mountain Lion
Important: Passwords for administrator accounts should not be blank.
Log in with an administrator account. Tip: If you don't know the password of any administrator accounts, see "Resetting the original administrator account password" below.
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences.
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click the lock button if it appears locked; enter the administrator password.
Select the name of the user whose password you want to change.
Click the Reset Password button or the Change Password button.
Enter a new password in both the New Password and Verify fields, and add a Password Hint if desired.
Click the Reset Password button or the Change Password button. This should get you taken care of.
Remember, also, that you can restart the computer (you will be prompted to enter your administrator password) and this should log him out  so that when you log back in, you can then follow the above steps with success.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • Viewing disk partitions made using Disk Utility in Windows

So, I took a USB external hard drive and partitioned it into two volumes using Disk Utility. I made sure to format them in MS-DOS format so they are FAT16 and can be recognized by Windows. I then took the hard drive and plugged it into my Windows computer. The first partition showed up just fine in my F: drive, but I'm not sure where the second partition is. When I plug it into my Mac, both volumes appear on my Desktop, but only the first one shows up in the Computer folder of my Windows computer.
    Any help would be appreciated.

What does it look like in Windows Disk Management?
Click Start (if you're on XP then click run) and type "diskmgmt.msc" without the quotes (on XP click OK, anything after XP click on the program), then in the bottom window (where it says Disk 0 Basic disk etc) find your external drive, what do the partitions look like?
It might be that windows isn't mounting that partition for some reason.

So I ran Disk Utility after installing leopard and i am getting this problem:

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I ran disk utility on tiger before i upgraded and had no issues with my drive. What's going on and how can I fix it?
I was also on hold with Apple for and hour and forty minutes. Then I got hung up on. I called back and I got the "In order to give you the help you need, you will need to speak to one of our Agents. Since none of our representatives are availble, you'll have to call us back later. Thank you for calling Apple. Goodbye." I guess I won't be getting any help there so if anyone has any infor that might help please share!

    Try this
Boot holding down Apple/S and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
    *fsck -fy*
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - _run the command again and keep doing so_ (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
    reboot

  • How do i import dvds made with disk utility to idvd maker

I copied video from my flash drive movie camera to the disk utility and made dvds that work on any dvd player. How come I cannot import any of these files to idvd?

files on a DVD that play in dvd players are MPEG 2 files
    iDVD does not ingest that
you could use an app like toast to convert the files into QT files that iDVD would accept
however, qualitywise it will not look very crisp
import your files from the flash drive camera (i suspect it uses the AVCHD-codec?) into iMovie and from there go ti iDVD

  • Help -- backup data with disk utility, input/output error.

My problem started when my MacBook Pro computer (with OsX) froze.  When I restarted, the startup screen stayed on for a long time.  Now, the startup screen stays on for a few seconds and then shuts off.  I do NOT have a recent backup of my data.  I have tried the following:
Went onto the recovery partition, used Disk Utility.  When I verified the disk, it said it needed repair.  When I tried to repair the disk, it said it could not be repaired.
I then tried to copy a disk image of the hard drive onto my external hard drive, but it says there is an "input/output error" and won't allow it.  How else can I backup files on my computer at this point?

Had issue partitioning 2TB my passport drive, got input/output error while using disk utility.
Here is what I did to get my external disk back
    In Disk Utility
    1) Try to use erase option first, it failed
    2) Try to partition the disk, failed as well.
    3) Then try erase option again, then ...   it worked !!

  • Help, my mbp crashed disk utility wont stop running

A couple of days ago, I was using firefox, google earth, and vuze.  I was trying to close some stuff down as my mac was slowing down pretty bad.  She locked up, couldn't force quit... persisted, shut down with the off button.  After that it wouldn't beboot, and I had a dark gray screen with spinning wheel.  I couldn't boot into safe mode, so I went to the disk utility it ran for many hours, and did nothing. It found errors, but did not progress in fixing them... Just said estimated time 1 minute.
    Any ideas?
    It's a mid 2009 intel 2.66ghz, I believe.

What is the SMART status of your hard drive? If it's "Failing," just replace the drive immediately. It will be much easier for you to try to recover data from it when your MBP is back up and running properly again. You'll need an external enclosure or a SATA-to-USB adapter and a downloaded copy of Data Rescue 3 or FileSalvage, both of which offer free demo versions that show exactly what the full purchased version would be able to recover.
    Data Rescue 3: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    FileSalvage 7: http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id= 1
There is no guarantee that you'll be able to recover any or all of your data if the drive has suffered a mechanical or electronic failure.

  • Help burning DVD with Disk Utility

I have a Mac Mini with a SuperDrive.
System Profiler confirms that I can write a DVD-R:
But Disk Utility won't let me burn a DVD. With a brand spanking new blank DVD-R in the drive, it says "Write Ability: Read Only":
What's the problem, and how do I burn my .dmg disk image?
Mac Mini Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Eject the disk.
In disk Utility, select the disk image file and click the burn button.
A drop down window should appear and ask for a blank disk. Insert the disk.
Soon the window should change and show burn options, and the burn button at the bottom right should turn blue. Choose any options you need and click the blue burn button.

If I try to quit it says your disc may be unoperable if you quit now in the middle of some operations. WHAT SHOULD I DO?!!! Help Please, Quick!!!!

    Seef,
This is what Mad Fool posted & it has helped many:
Did you recently update your iTunes?
If so, that seems to have caused a bit of a problem with Panther.
    If that is the case:
Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all ITunes .pkg files
    EXCEPT iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg.
Be very careful here, be sure to leave the last two there!
Then see if you can repair permissions.

  • Disk Utility Reports Volume Check Failed

I've been having some trouble with one of my two internal hard drives, so by mistake I ran Disk Utility from the Panther install disk on my PowerPC G5 running 10.4.10...I didn't realize until after I'd run Disk Repair that it wasn't the Tiger install disk I was using.
The Disk Repair Utility from the 10.3 install disk reported an "Invalid Leaf Record Count(it should be 41 instead of 210)". It also said that "2 HFS Volumes Repaired, 1 Volume Could Not Be Repaired". This was particularly puzzling since there were only two partitions on that internal hard drive. What was this other Volume it referred to?
Upon realizing that I was using an old CD, I ran Disk Utility from the Tiger install disk, and got a report "Invalid Catalog Record Type. Volume Check Failed."
Can anyone shed any light on what this all means, and how I can fix it?
    Many thanks in advance!
    -Zina

Thanks, abrody, for your reply. First, I ws lucky in that there was no indication other than Retrospect reporting a problem with this, the client machine, so all data was available and the system seemed to be working fine (other than the error report).
Here's what worked for me: I ran Disk Repair (from the Tiger install disk)on all 4 partitions on my second internal HD, and came up with a clean report. I erased one of the partitions and, using SuperDuper, I cloned the system partition from the troublesome partition on the other internal HD. Then I ran Disk Repair from the install disk again, on the cloned partition, to be sure I didn't carry over the problem with the clone. It came up clean.
Then I erased the troublesome system partition and cloned the system back over from the trouble-free partition clone.
I ram Disk Repair again from the install disk, just to make sure everything came up with a clean bill of health, which it did.
But I'm going to keep a close eye on this internal HD, since I think it's possible it's failing. I always back up all my data every night, so at least I'm covered there.
Again, thanks so much for your reply and help.

  • Disk utility no longer working, any alternative HDD maintenance prog?

    Hi all,
I have an early 2003 Powerbook G4 12" aluminium. 80Gb HDD with about 4.5Gb free. It's running very slowly but I hardly tax the machine so I'm not too bothered, but I tried to run Disk Utility to make sure everything was ok and it couldnt even verify permissions. It said it might take several minutes to run the permissions, but after 20+ minutes I gave up.
Is there any alternative free program that'll check all the important bits and make sure things are fine?
I used to use OS9 and ran things like Techtool lite and Norton speedtools; zapping the PRAM, optimising the drive and that sort of thing. I get the feeling the HDD on this powerbook is fragmented to ****, but then I didn't think Macs slowed down from such things like a PC.
But its made me realise I don't have any kind of housekeeping tools to keep my now OSX machines running (those being the G4 powerbook and a Quicksilver G4, running Leopard and Tiger respectively).
    Many thanks for any help.

Are you running Disk Utility using your Tiger install DVD? If not, you need to.
Another popular utility is Disk Warrior (more powerful than DiskUtility), however, it costs about $100.
You don't have enough free space on your hard drive as it is typically recommended to have 10-15% free.
