HELP! Most of my applications won't open

This morning when I woke up my IBook my Mail was still open from yesterday. When I tried to open ICal it kept crashing. So I restarted my IBook and now ITunes, Mail, Address Book, ICal will not open at all!! (However, it seems that iPhoto, Appleworks, Safari etc is fine). I tried to run Disk Utilities (just for the heck of it, even though I am sure it wouldn't fix anything) and it couldn't be found.( I did run it a few weeks ago, so I know it was there.)
I do have a IPhone, but haven't synced in a week or so.
The other weird thing that has happened, is that all the info on the top right hand corner of my menu bar (my airport, date, weather snitch, spotlight etc) disappeared a few weeks ago. Now it is just blank. I haven't changed any settings, so not sure how that happened...maybe it is related??
Thanks in advance for any advice at all...I desperately need my computer to work today!!

I just did a check through my Applications, and the other applications that will not open are
ISync
Internet Connect
Weather Snitch
...which I thought was interesting since they are the applications that are up in the right hand corner of my menu bar.
Any help would be very appreciated!!
Thanks.

  • Most of my applications won't open since I upgraded to Maverick

This afternoon I updated the software on my MacBook Pro to Maverick from Mountain Lion. I got a gray screen for about 20 minutes after the process was done, so I force restarted my computer by holding down the power button. Everything seemed fine when I turned it back on, but then I tried opening iMessage and it wasn't working. Neither is the notification center, Mail, Maps, Calendar, iBooks, or Pages. The App Store is working, but it says that I have 4 new updates yet it won't show me what I need to update. I have no idea what to do! This is what shows up whenever I open one of the applications I listed:
    Any suggestions please?

Dude, U shouldn't update! there are a lot of problems with this update...
For me, the installation went well, the laptop restarted and got stuck in a loop of restart because of a unknown problem. The screen froze on a gray apple logo with som text on it. I tried recovery mode and there were no options that could help the problem, so I closed it and it restarted to Mountain Lion again. Now I don't know what to do. I will not try again thought after what you wrote.

  • Applications won't open after Quicktime Update...and fix won't work!

    Hello,
I'm having the same problem as many others: after the recent Quicktime update most of my applications won't open.
I've followed the instructions from Apple at
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306043
However, when I do the "sudo" prebinding thing, I get this:
update_prebinding: error: dependent dylib is not prebound
    update_prebinding: error 256 running updateprebindingcore
    Any ideas?! Thanks!

  • I Just updated the software of my iphone 4s thru phone, now the photo application won't open... Please help me what to do?

Hi! I'm Ralph.. Just updated my iphone 4s from 6.1.2- 6.1.3. ... Now the photo application won't open... Please help me what to do

Why would this be covered under warranty?  There is nothing wrong with the device, it simply needs to be restored.
As already stated twice in this thread, disable ALL security software on the computer and restore the device.

  • Some applications won't open after updating to OS 10.8.5

I am running the Mountain Lion on a 2009 Macbook Air. I just did an update to 10.8.5 and now some of my applications won't open. A few of the appications that no longer run are Chrome, iPhoto and all Microsoft applications.
I tried uninstalling an reinstalling the apps but that did nothing, I also tried creating a new user account to see if the problem persisted in there and it did. I then tried removing my caches folder from Library which also fixed nothing. I then tried booting it in safe mode and the applications successfully opened in there.
I obviously can't just boot my Macbook up in safe mode whenever I need to use it so if anyone knows how this problem could be solved? They were all functioning normally before I did the most recent update of OS.
I have tried repairing the disk permissions but that resulted in no change also. I do not have the start up disk for Mountain Lion so reinstalling the OS is not possible, nor is booting from disk.
I'm in my final year of college, in the middle of my final year project I REALLY need this fixed.

When I try to open iPhoto, Unity, Chrome or a few others it gives me the same error each time. "iPhoto cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X"
But that doesn't make sense because I just updated the OS and all my applications are up to date also. I've tried reinstalling, no joy though.

  • Mac Applications won't open on startup

Whenever I start up my Macbook Pro, it's very slow when I log into my user account. It takes multiple attempts to open up programs such as Safari, Microsoft One Note, or Microsoft Word. The icon will pop up and bounce in my dock, then stop bouncing but not open. I have to right click and select "force quit" because it will tell me the application is not responding. It usually takes 4 or 5 tries before the application can start normally. If the laptop has been on a few hours, this usually won't happen.
I have tried logging in a Guest User account and everything opens up so quickly! Same thing when booting into Safe Mode and logging into my own user account. Rebooting normally, I still have this problem.
I tried following this thread but the fix seems to be user specific
All applications are up to date. This happened in Mountain Lion and now Yosemite (using 10.10 right now).

Hello, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • Applications won't open, among other things

My MacBook is falling apart...first the wireless stops working (similarly to others), then the backlight goes out, and now my applications have gone haywire...
First, I tried to install the iTunes 9.0.2 update and the install failed and corrupted my iTunes so that it no longer works (I have this posted on another thread). I have tried to redownload and install multiple times and it tells me there is an error in the install. The I tried to install it again from the software update, along with a system update and both had errors installing. I tried doing them separately and they still wouldn't work. This was last Thursday. I was put of town and didn't use my MacBook until today, but when I turned it on, I discovered that half my applications won't open -- mail, safari, iChat, adium, picasa, to name a few. The software update won't open from the pull down menu, but I can get to it from the system preferences.
Also, now it tells me there are no updates, when the two that failed should still show up.
There actually seems to be something wrong with the installer in general too, as now anything I try to install gives me an error...
    Any ideas???

  • Applications Won't Open After Charging/Updating iPod

I downloaded several applications to my iPod Touch from the App store on my iPod. Then, I charged my iPod on my computer, downloaded the latest iPod update, and now the applications won't open on my iPod. When I press the application button, it goes to that app's opening screen and then goes right back to my iPod's main screen. What's the deal? Thanks!

This problem just appeared on my son's iPod Touch. I reset the iPod to it's factory settings. I did NOT restore back to my saved settings. When it was restored, I installed each downloaded application one at a time until I discovered which one was corrupting the operating system.

  • Please Help, Several Applications Won't Open!

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this. Please point me in the right direction if it isn't. I just did a software update. The current "internet security update" was, I believe, one of installs (I wish I paid more attention). Now, I have several internet related applications that won't work. Safari, my browser of choice, won't open (I'm doing this on Firefox). My email app, Eudora, won't open. Quicktime won't open. I just tried reinstalling both Safari and Eudora. Both still won't open. I haven't done anything with Quicktime yet. Just checked other applications (RealPlayer, Windows Media Player). Neither will open. Is there a conflict somewhere? How can I resolve this? Please help!
    Thank you.
    FYI: I have a Titanium G4 550MHz PowerBook running OS 10.4.10.

As others have noted, get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before updating. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall everything.

I recently installed a distributed computing program from computeforcancer.org. I don't know if that's causing the issue or whether it's something else. Any suggestions, as always, gratefully received!

Was the program you installed Java-based? It sounds like it has damaged the Java framework somehow.
The first basic troubleshooting technique is to create a new user and see if the situation exists in the new user. If the problem persists, you've got a system-wide problem. If it doesn't, there is something corrupted in your user environment.
Java has two plist files, one in the Library/Preferences and one in each user's preferences (com.apple.java.util.prefs.plist). Wherever the problem exists, try dragging that preference file out of its folder and onto the desktop. My plist file has several entries for other programs, so the program you installed may have tried to add its entries and corrupted the plist.

  • Applications won't open after error in a update using a Apple G4

Apple G4 wont open applications, it says application switcher error or error type 3, everthing used to work until when updating the mac a error accured it restarted, now it won't open an application without saying error type 3, or when it boots a bomb sign with the following message saying application switcher error please restart. does anyone know what i can do or whats happened? i have a boot disk which isn't the offical apple cd as i cannot find it or find a place where i could get one from if anyone knows where i could get one from that would be most helpful!!
    Thanks.

    haydn,
It sounds like you are talking about Application Switcher from system 6, twenty five years ago.  If you are using system 9 and you happened to have other systems on your hard drive, the computer could get confused with what to do becausse it sees older software that the processor can not handle.
I looked at a map of England and did not recognize any cities that would have a Mac user group.  If you google and find a user group near you, the best thing to do would be to find a Boot CD, put it in, restart while holding down the C key and see if you can clean up your drive.
Otherwise, ebay has boot CDs listed from time to time.  This may look tempting:

But, here is the catch.  The disks look like they are grey and not the universal install CDs.  If one of the CDs is not for your exact model of computer, be sure and look for a CD that is white with an orange 9 on it.
