Help! Mouting Windows shared drives in solaris and printing

Hi, Is there any article that explains in detail how to mount network folders (shared folders on Windows NT/2000) from solaris ? We have a windows domain with several systems and a print server on windows 2000 and a sun solaris 2.8 system in the same network. Also How do I setup solaris to print to our printer which is configured on a windows 2000 domain? The printer is not an ip printer, but is there a way that you could print to a certain port to the print server from solaris (windows 2000) and then capture info from that port and direct it to the printer? Any suggestion of books might also help.
Thx Paul

Hi, Is there any article that explains in detail how
to mount network folders (shared folders on Windows
NT/2000) from solaris ?The usual solution is using Samba to let Solaris talk the Microsoft file sharing protocol(s).
Sun used to have a product named PC Netlink or PC-NFS.
I don't know if it's still available, though.
How do I setup solaris to print to our printer which is
configured on a windows 2000 domain? The printer is
not an ip printerSamba can also allow Solaris to print to a printer on a Windows print server.
Alternatively for the printing question, I'm told Win2K includes a Unix/LPD Print Service on the cdrom, which supports the Unix printing protocol. (RFC 1179)
Take your pick.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That's not a supported destination. Windoze doesn't provide the things OSX and Time Machine require. See #2 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for supported destinations.

  • Access to Windows Shared Drive

I've been able to access a drive that is shared on a windows PC from my PBG4 in previous instances. However, for some strange reason I simply cannot get it to work. The computer appears in the Network > server column. However, whenever I try to connect to it, I get a message that the object cannot be found. Then I try to delete the alias, and it will not let me. I've restarted the Mac and PC with no success. If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

    Hi Sulo28,
I finally fixed the problem with my computer. I used a “brute force” approach to fix, but it worked. I believe that the culprit of this problem where Mac computer can’t access the Windows shared drive / folder is Norton Anti-Virus program. I tried to connect to Windows machine with almost identical configuration but that did not have Norton Anti-Virus program installed. It worked just fine. So, at that point I eliminated the possibility that there was something wrong with my Mac. I tried to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus, but it wouldn’t allow me. (I kept giving me an error message that Microsoft Installer files are missing.) So, I got tired of it and decided to reformat and reinstall the Windows OS. When, I reinstalled my machine to exactly the same state it was when I had a problem, except I didn’t reinstall Norton Anti-Virus 2006. I was able to connect my Mac to it and vice versa. I would make an educated guess that you also probably have Norton Anti-Virus program installed on your system. You can try to remove it from your system, but I’m pretty sure that you will have to reinstall your full OS in order to fix this problem. Norton Anti-Virus probably modifies some necessary registry settings, and it’s beyond my skill level to figure out precisely which settings it corrupts. As you can image, I would stay away from Norton products from now on.

My USB ports will not recognize any devices, iPhone or external drives. Keyboard and printer work, any suggestions?

I'd start by looking in system profiler.
the blue Apple icon > About this Mac > More info...
goto the hardware section. Scroll down and click on  USB
See what happens when you have the device plugged in & not plugged in.
Move keyboard & mouse around to verify that ports work. Plug device in a port that worked with keyboar or mouse.  Keyboard usb ports are rather low power.
Perhaps device is taking too much power.  Are devices power or unpowered?  Try connecting devices to a usb hub.

  • Exernal Drive and Windows shared drive

Wow! I guess Leopard wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Since upgrading, I no longer have access to my shared drive on my windows desktop, nor do I have access to my Airport connected external USB drive. Although my finder shows both drives, when I attempt to access them, it just says connecting. Any help will be appreciated.
    My Config,
    MBP running Leopard connected wirelessly
    Airport Extreme
XP Desktop with 2 shared drives plugged into 10/100 APE
Mybook 350 connected to APE via USB 2.0

Is this an NTFS drive? If so I think you have an issue with its security settings. Pull up the properties of the drive and click on the security tab and look at who can do what - I expect you will see "names" relating to your old laptop. I would suggest a google for "NTFS external drive permissions" and I would expect you will find some step by step guides to sort it.

  • Read-only access when saving metadata to file from Adobe Lightroom on a MAC OS to Windows shared drive

We have a group of 5 people editing and indexing photos to a shared drive on a windows server, everyone has its own catalog and working on different folders to avoid any locking conflicts.
The windows computers don't have any problems but the Mac's don't write the updated metadata to all files because they get the message "Photos have read-only access".
    The environment is the following:
    2x Macs workstations running:
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    - iMAC with MAC OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    3x Windows Workstations:
    - Windows 7
    - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7.1
    Server:
    - Shared drive on a Windows Server 2012 Standard
I have searched the internet, no one has this problem with this exact setup but I have tried all the solutions I found, namely:
    1. Connect to the network drive with cifs:// protocol
    2. Change the settings of the nsmb.conf for 'smb1_only' protocol
    3. Mount the drive manually by command line
    Nothing worked, any ideas?

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?  I have the same issue and wonder if Lightroom 6 will resolve it.  I  tried AFP, SMB2, SMB3 and they all failed to save metadata randomly. When I use NFS from OS X then it works fine but it's a little slower than SMB and it's not as native as the mount via AFP or SMB, so it's harder to maintain.     My server is a FreeNAS 9.2 (FreeBSD) which is running Samba, Netatalk and native NFS.

try this tip by *Chris CA*:
Point iTunes prefs -Advanced - iTunes media folder location to the shared drive.
Don't uncheck anything or delete anything from iTunes.
In iTunes, select all the files you want to copy to the NAS.
Then right click - Consolidate selected files.
This copies the selected items to the location on the NAS.
You can then delete these from the iTunes media folder (\Music\iTunes\iTunes media\Movies)
when done, point +Tines media folder location+ back to the original location.
if you want to play content of off the shared drive, be sure it is mounted before you launch iTunes.

  • Windows 7 driver for 3500 color printer

I need a windows 7 driver for my 3500 color laserjet printer.  Windows XP is the latest driver listed on the website.

The latest Vista drivers for this printer on THIS page shows one of the enhancements as supporting Windows 7. So it should install fine. Do notice that this is the v.13 software.
EDIT: Just downloaded the version 13 software, and tried installing it. It seemed to go through fine, though I don't have the printer physically here. Check the screenshot.

  • XI3.0 Receiver file adapter write to windows shared drive

    Hi,
Our XI server SP09 currently runs on windows 2003 server,  I wish to use the receiver file adapter to create a file on another windows server.  I have created a folder on the other server and set permissions so that anyone can read and write to it.
The communication channel has been set-up with a target directory of //server/shared_folder/folder and a transport protocol of 'File system(NFS)'
When I try and send an XML message to the file adapter I get the following error on the runtime workbench :-
Last message processing started 09:47:10 2005-06-09, Error: Message processing failed with java.lang.Exception: Message processing failed - configuration error in file receiver adapter (Directory does not exist / cannot be created)
My questions are as follows :-
    a) Do I have the target directory on the communication channel set-up correctly?  i.e. do I use / or \
    b) What username will need to be set-up on the other server so that the file adapter can write to the shared folder
    c) Is there another way of providing user and password information for connecting to the other server?
    Many thanks

  • Help with Windows Sharing Please

    Hello,
I am new to Mac and this is my first mac book 17 running Mac OS X 10.4.8 pro i've purchased through work. I only recieved this 2 days ago. I am having a problem connecting to my windows 2003 active server / domain controller at work and I am having a problem connecting to my windows xp computer share at home when i take my laptop home with me.
At work I am connecting to my network via wired built in ethernet with the following ip
    IP - 10.43.144.190
    SN - 255.255.240.0
    GW - 10.43.144.2
DNS1 - 10.43.144.80 - This is my primary Domain controller DNS
DNS2 - 10.43.144.81 - This is my secondary Domain controller DNS
I also have parralels installed running windows xp for my proprietary software that only run on xp with the following address
    IP - 10.43.144.191
    SN - 255.255.240.0
    GW - 10.43.144.2
DNS1 - 10.43.144.80 - This is my primary Domain controller DNS
DNS2 - 10.43.144.81 - This is my secondary Domain controller DNS
the only difference is that my ip has change.
The problem that i am having is when i go to the finder and network i see all my computers on the network even my windows server. but it won't let me connect. i get an error the the alias no longer exsits do i want to fix or delete.
So i try installing directory access plug-in via directory access and when i go to connect to my domain controller i get an error that it cannot find or resolve my domain name.
Know if your familiar with stupid windows in order for you to connect to AD your computer must be able to resolve the domain name via DNS. to when i go to ping my domain name eg. my.company.com i get an error cannot resolve. but when i ping the ip address it sees the server.
So the first problem that i see with mac is that for some reason it resolves the ip address but i need it to resolve the domain name, and i can't for the life of me figure out how to do this.
and if your answer is to modify the hosts file - i tried that and if your familiar with windows networking that won't work on windows machines either - again STUPID WINDOWS.
So in short how do i connect to my 2003 AD Server.
The reason i know that my laptop will connect to my domain is that remember i installed parralels on this macbook with windows xp. well guess what - you got it, I connect to my domain. so i know that it isn't a hardware issue or a network issue its a mac issue.
Finally i am having the same problem at home connecting to my network via the airport. I see my computer but cannot connect to my computer with windows xp shares. Any suggestions?
If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated. I tried calling MAC support and they were no use. They said they were transfering my problem to the engineers. and then they said that they couldn't help me becuase its beyond their scope of repairs. but if its a mac os x problem how can it be beyond their repair? I mean come on I purchased this mac for work, told by the sales man that i would have no problems and that mac support is there for me if i cannot connect but they seem like they aren't. I could've went and purchased a dell and not have this headache of connecting to my server of workstation.
Again sorry for the ranting but if anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated

Not to sure how to direct you with your issue at home, but here is some help with the server at work.
As I know it, you have two routes. You are obviously (to me) familiar with networking so you might already know that you can install File Services for Macintosh on the server. It's a component of Windows Server that allows you to connect Macs via AFP to the server. Just install it, share a folder and connect via AFP. Easy, but the drawback is that you are limited to 31 character filename lengths on the Mac share.
I am assuming you want to stay SMB. For that, you need to disable SMB signing on the server via a Group Policy. Here is a link describing that:
    http://simultaneouspancakes.com/Lessons/archives/2004/12/howtodisable.shtml
Also, Microsoft has an article on binding a Mac to the domain. It's not necessary, but you can do it if you want to get Active Directory working between the Mac and the server. It will require that the long username for an Admin user on the Mac be exactly the same as a user on the Windows network. If it's different, it won't bind.
I don't know how that will affect your laptop when in use at home.
    Hope that helps.

  • Help - iDVD window won't come out and play!

This is a very weird situation and hope someone else has a solution. I use iDVD all the time and this is the first time I have encountered this problem. If I launch an existing iDVD project, it will load - I hear the motion music and the iDVD drop down menu headers appear in the menu bar. If I select a command from the drop down menu - like "Save as" - the dialog box genies down from the right side of the menu bar. Expose does not find the window.
I do use an external monitor to increase my work space. I have tried arranging the monitors differently, moving the menu bar around, disconnecting the external display, changing the display resolutions all without any luck. I was able to use iDVD by logging into the Guest user account and launching from there. But I don't want to have to do that for every iDVD project.
Any help from the Mac community would be greatly appreciated.

Found the answer finally by searching thru the old posts. Here is the answer for anyone else that might run into this.
Try the following: close iDVD, delete the iDVD preference file, com.apple. iDVD.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iDVD and see if that helps.

  • Unable to save Keynote file to Windows Shared Drive

Have recently installed Mavericks 10.9, and Keynote Version 6.0.1.
I am having difficulty saving any Keynote files to a Windows network Share. The network Share was added with domain credentials of the Windows Environment, so permissions are not the issue as far as the share is concerned.
When attempting to save any file, existing or new to the network Share, Keynote advises that there are not sufficient permissions to be able to save to this folder. If I copy and paste the item into the folder, it works as normal.
It looks to be an issue with Keynote saving with local Mac Credentials instead of Windows Credentials, however there are no issues saving other type of files to the network share, just Keynote.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

This is a known issue, as you are doing the work around is to save to the Mac and then transfer to the the share folder. Hopefully this may be sorted when Apple completes the series of updates we are expecting.
