Help moving files from G3 imac (OS 8.7)

Howdy. I recently pulled the old imac ( 1999) out of the closet and gave it to my nine year old daughter . It does not have any way to transfer data other than a first generation USB port. I've been unable to find a flash drive ( powered or not) or anything else which can move the files. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ( she really wants to move all the artwork and stories she wrote over to my computers so that she can print them up. Many Thanks.

jjb3272,
There are a lot of used USB printers out there that will work with that iMac. That might be the way to go for a nine year-old.
I am wondering why the USB port does not seem to like the flash drives. Could you elaborate on what you have tried? Also, what used computer stores do you have in Tallahassee? A used USB zip drive would also be something to consider.
Finally, have you tried getting the iMac back on line? That is the environment the iMac was advertised for originally.

I am having a problem moving files from an imac in one location to an imac inanother location.  I have tried using Dropbox which is installed in both locations but when i drad a file ino yhe app it becomes an alias.  When I get to the other location it says I can't open the file because the " original application that created it is not present".  This is despite the fact that the app that created both files is installed in both computers.  If I use the Public folder in the idisc, when I get to the other location the file isn't there.  Am I forgetting to turn something on or off?  Should I manually sync the Public folder and if so how? Thanks

  • Need help moving photos from my iMac to my iPad.

New to the Mac World....I am trying to move a photo file from my iMac to my iPad....and have not figured it out.
    Need iHelp!
    Thanks...

You need to sync your iPad to your computer. When in iTunes click of your device then photos. You can then select the album(s) you want. Then just click on sync.

  • Do you have experience with Adobe Revel moving files from an iMac to the "cloud"?

Over the past few months, Adobe has been moving photo files from personal MACs into their cloud space (Adobe Revel).  They have just hit my computer this weekend.  Is there a way using the Apple operating system to find out the names of the files Adobe moved?

I can tell you with certainty that for documents of any kind "GoodReader" is an excellent app. It will let you connect to your mac via wi-fi. It mounts it as an external drive and you can create folders and drag files to the folders.
I haven't tried dragging any movies or music but there wouldn't be anything to stop you from doing so. There is also a file management component to the app that lets you choose an "Open with ... " type of dialog and open a file with pages if it is a .doc file, or GoodReader can open pdf, doc, xls and many other doc types.
Very happy with this .99 cent app. I agree with the other question though. If I rip a dvd, I use handbrake to convert to mp4 and add to my iTunes - then sync as per normal.

  • Moving files from old iMac to new iMac

I am about to buy a new iMac and wish to move all of the data from my old iMac to the new machine. I have backed up data with both Carbon Copy Cloner and with Time Machine. Which of these should I use to move my old data over to the new computer?

Last week I had to do this very thing. Both Macs ran 10.6.2, the old SL Retail; the new had a new 'SL Build.' (10C2234) (Only bought Retail a short while ago and now it cant be used on the 27" .. Duh!)
In the past I have had problems using MA because I did not migrate the User from the old Mac I created a new user before doing so.
In this case I booted the old Mac in Target Mode (on boot hold "T" key down until FW floater seen), connected it to the 27" via FW 800 and booted 27".
I checked migrate the lot. (There are many upgrades to previous basic SW so I didn't want to go through all these upgrades.)
1H49m shortened to 45m or so and all done.
I opened Eudora only to be told Rosetta wasn't installed! No invitation to 'Get IT?' I installed Rosetta from the Retail DVD.
I rebooted and got kernel panics.
I booted from SL (Cloned previously to a FW drive Partition on TM) and got KP's again.
I booted the 27" in Safe Mode (Hold Shift down on boot until spinning gear runs) and set about trashing all 3rd Party stuff in HD>Library>StartupItems Folder.
Stil got KP's when booting normally.
I ran DiskWarrior 4.2 on the 27" from the FW Partition after booting this Vol in Safe Mode, and DW got confused requesting to CD boot ... you cannot boot 2009 (Late) Macs from the 4.2 CD/DVD.
'Phoned Apple and found there was ANOTHER StartupItems Folder ... System>Library>StartupItems.
This had 3 Folders that were put there by Parallels 5 running on my old Mac. Copied (dragged) to DT, deleted from StartupItems, rebooted and no KP. (Thanks Apple Help!)
Trashed the copied Folders as they were of no use.
So far there have been no major problems; Camino quit 4 times, now stable? Snitch needed registering again.
Runs much cooler than the C2D iMac.

  • Moving files from iMac to iPad

I had a problem with my iMac this morning. I couldn't send an E-mail message, so I thought I'd try to use my iPad for the first time. I wanted to move the message I had typed in my iMac's E-mail program to my iPad's E-mail program. I called Apple Care Protection, or whatever it's called. Anyway, I was told that there was no way to do what I had wanted. I would simply have to retype the message in my iPad E-mail program.
The technicians/advisors at Apple Care Protection are about as good as you can find, and the one I talked to was probably right. However, I just have to check on his advice one more time. Is it correct? Is it true that there is no way to transfer files from my iMac to my iPad? I find that amazing.
I have the latest operating systems for both my iMac and my iPad installed; however, I am using a late 2009 model iMac. Could that be the problem?

Thanks for your very informative response. It's  a model for the way questions should be answered. It was especially interesting to see your comment about my 2009 model and Handoff.  The screen had said that, and the technician I talked to said that the screen was right--OF COURSE--but I still was gob-smacked, as the Brits say. I had thought that the operating system was the only important thing, and that since I had the latest operating systems for both my Mac and my iPad, that I could do anything that Macs and iPads can do. Well, live and learn, and one more thing to learn will be to use the cloud apps that you mention. Finally, it's interesting that you mention Evernote. I know that everyone says that it's the greatest, but I couldn't do anything with it and finally uninstalled it from my computer. I found that Apple's Notes did everything I wanted in fine style. No complaint there.
Oh, I finally understand why you mentioned Dropbox. Sure--I think.  I have DropBox. I guess you are saying that I can export a file to DropBox from my iMac and then send it from DropBox to my iPad. Well, maybe, but right now I'm having trouble sending files from DropBox to anywhere, and I have given up on trying to get help from DropBox. Thanks again.

  • I am having trouble moving files from iPhoto to a thumb drive.  Sometimes I can move 20 photos next time I can only move 2 photos or 0---this is during the same session.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  Can someone please help?

I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.
I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.
Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

  • Help transferring files from old Mac 10.3.9 to new Mac 10.6.1

Hi - I just bought a new iMac with Snow Leopard and I am trying to transfer my old files from my iMac running 10.3.9. I connected a FireWire cable between the two and restarted the old iMac while holding down the "t" key, using Migration Assistant on the new iMac. Migration Assistant kept saying that it was waiting for the old iMac to restart, even though the old one HAD restarted. I looked on the forums and saw that I should try to run Setup Assistant from the Utilities folder on the old iMac. But there isn't a Setup Assistant in the Utilities folder.
So I am at an impasse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some of the items I've found via searching suggest to avoid transfer or migration of older
files from the ancient 10.3 over to the newer 10.5 or 10.6. And when the old computer is
a PowerPC, the new Intel-based Mac may not see or be able to use some of the items.
The older Setup Assistant is supposed to do for Panther 10.3 what the newer Migration
Assistant does for Tiger 10.4; to an extent. The results from the older system are limited.
There is a way to have the new computer import some of the older computer's user files
and account info into it, before its first run; but with a leap so great between 10.3 & 10.6,
    the results overall won't be as satisfactory as just running the new computer totally new;
going through the setup and upgrade processes independent of the old Mac altogether.
The Apple Support- Snow Leopard page should have some upgrade and migration help
info on there which may be helpful: http://www.apple.com/support/snowleopard/
It would appear that the instructions for migrating from an older Mac to one running 10.5
or 10.6 apply to the older computer, so the Panther software may be secondary if it really
matters at all in this process. See this document, and wonder along with me... This is not
quite the same as a migration assistant; but you don't need FW Target Disk in either case.

    The older method may not apply in the path you've chosen, outlined here, below;
but note there are matters about file and older app compatibility in the newer OS:

In the past, I've done a bit of upgrade and some migration action and found that overall,
the new OS X seemed to work a lot better with nothing old involved. That's just me!
And I'm sure each individual's mileage may vary...
    Good luck & happy computing!

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

  • Issue in moving files from data fodler to processed folder in background

    Hi All,
I am facing one issue in moving files from data fodler to processed folder in case of background execution.
When i am executing the file in the foreground, i can move the file from Data folder to processed folder. I am using SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE FM to move the file from data folder to processed folder.  I can see the file in processed folder once the program is executed.
But in case of executing the same program in background, it is giving me the error "Failed to move the file to processed folder" in the spool of SM37 and i can see the file still laying in data folder.
I tried to check other programs which acesses the same folder as the above program, whether they are able to move. They are able to move the file to processed fodler successfully both in foreground and background mode.
Please help me in resolving this issue.
    Thanks,
    Deepa

    Hi Sanu,
Please use teh following code to move the file from source to target folder.
This is a code showing how to create and use COPY command of UNIX in ABAP
    PARAMETERS:
    Input file path
    p_input TYPE localfile,
    Processed file path
    p_proc TYPE localfile.
Declare the Types to file data
    TYPES: BEGIN OF L_X_OUTPUT,
sys(200), " Please note, there are asterisk before and after sys (i.e.sys)
    END OF L_X_OUTPUT.
    * Internal table to store file data
DATA l_i_output TYPE STANDARD TABLE OF l_x_output WITH HEADER LINE.
    * Variable for the UNIX command
    DATA: l_v_unix_comm(255) TYPE c.
    Copy command of UNIX
    CONCATENATE 'mv' p_input p_proc
    INTO l_v_unix_comm SEPARATED BY space.
For example the Copy command is stored as below
    cp u2018/data/interfaces/input/input_fileu2019 u2018/data/interfaces/processed/processed_fileu2019
Examples of UNIX Command *u2022 mv filename1 filename2 --- moves a file (i.e. gives it a different name, or moves it into a *different directory (see below) *u2022 cp filename1 filename2 --- copies a file
    Execute the UNIX Copy command.
This command will copy the file from input file path to the processed file path
CALL 'SYSTEM' ID 'COMMAND' FIELD l_v_unix_comm
    ID 'TAB'
    FIELD l_i_output-sys.
    IF sy-subrc eq 0.
write: 'File is copied successfully using UNIX command in ABAP'.

  • Moving files from PowerMac G3 to MacBook Pro

I have a new MacBook Pro and am moving files from all my old macs onto it. I found an old beige desktop PowerPC hard drive but don't have a monitor for it. Also, I have ancient 3.5 floppies that I need to read and the old beige computer has a slot for that. So, the question is: How do I get my files off the beige G3 and onto the new computer when the beige PowerPC has NO firewire?

One solution is to find any old crappy monitor and hook it up to the beige G3. Then you can configure it to use Ethernet, and set up a small Ethernet network with your new MacBook Pro. It is a little complicated, but not difficult.

How do I get a .mov file from my iMac to my iPad?

    Hi Mike in CoS,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
What app did you use to create the .mov file?  Apps like iMove or Final Cut Pro X have options to Share to iTunes to create a compatible version for the iPad.   If you don't have the option to export the file again, then try the steps outlined in this article:
