    HI Brigdool,
It depends how you made the backup.
If you copied your entire iTunes folder onto the flash drive, just copy it back to the appropriate place on the computer.
If you copied individual folders or files, add them back to iTunes by inserting the flash drive in your computer, and then dragging the files into your "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.
The first method recreates your library as it was, with all playcounts, playlists, etc.  The second method builds a new library with the same content.

  • Need help getting playlist into flash drive

Hi friends ... so sorry to bother ... but I need some help ... my iPod Shuffle isn't compatible with my new cars audio system .... so I just bought my first usb flash drive (sandisk 8gig)  ...I inserted the flash drive and it mounted right away on the desktop ...  I just dragged all of the albums I wanted from my iTunes library to the flash drive icon .... I double clicked the flash icon and all the songs and every artist that I dragged into it showed up .... I inserted the flash into my car's usb port- and it played wonderfullyu... until I clicked on the menu and saw that instead of the 900 or so songs I dragged into the flash drive- only about 18 showed up in the audio systems menu ... only about 5 artists instead of the 30 or 40 that I loaded .... the flash drive is 8gig capacity and my entire library is only about 5 gigs .... I emptied all of the mpg's from my flash drive- threw out the trash ... and re-loaded everything again .... once again, when the transfer was finished , everything I dragged into the flash icon was there- every tune played as it shoud when clicked within the desk-mounted flash drive .... but when I inserted again into my cars usb port- once again only a fraction of what was on the flash drive showed up on my screen ...
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong ...The flash drive never appeared in my iTunes window anywhere and under "devices" there was no option highlighted- maybe this is a clue to what I haven't done right?  this was the first time I ever used a usb flash drive..I didn't format or anything else -when the flash icon showed up on my desktop - I just intuitively dragged my playlist into the icon - everything appeared to be in there ... but didn't end up in my car's audio system .... please advise .... please advise as simply as possible .... much thanks in advance ....
    David

    David,
Ther flash drive will not be a recognized Device to iTunes.  It will simply be another drive.  You can add files to it by drag-n-drop, as you correctly did.
Most likely, you have many files in AAC audio format, and your car player is one of the many that can play MP3, but not AAC.
If you need to convert any formats, consult this document:

  • Problem importing photos to iPhoto Library from flash drive

When I try to import photos from flash drive into iPhoto library, they seem to import just fine. BUT if I close iPhoto and then return later, the photos I supposedly imported from the flash drive are not in the Library, and a screen prompt tells me the "source is not available". Photos import into Library from digital camera just fine. Why are the photos from my flash drive not staying in the Library? Kinda defeats the purpose of a Library if images won't stay in it. Please help!

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • ITunes Library on Flash Drive

I recently purchased a macbook air, and was going to use mainly as a travel computer, but I find myself using it more and more, and hardly ever using my macbook pro. I am contemplating switching completely over. My one big issue is syncing my iPhone and my iTunes content including mobile apps. The macbook air is somewhat limited in storage with 128 GB. I thought in an effort to maintain maximum portability and also storage space, I would move the iTunes library to a flash drive.
If I wanted to do this, I assume I simply have to drag the iTunes Library folder from my home on the macbook pro to the flash drive. Then I would just change the preferences in iTunes on the macbook air so that it knows the iTunes library is located on the flash drive.
Two questions if I have it so far. First, I assume it is not a problem to remove the flash drive so long as I am not accessing iTunes content. Please let me know if this is correct. I store my daughter's iTunes library on an external hard drive, but her computer is a desktop so portability is not an issue.
The second issue, is whether there are any other libraries or folders that need to be copied or transferred. I ask because I see certain references to mobile apps in preference folders in my user library. At least I think so.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Change library by holding down the option key while starting iTunes.

    Correct.

I have no experience with apps. Copying the preferences files will save you some trouble in setting up as long as both iTunes versions are the same.
On the whole idea of using a flash drive, well, okay. I don't see a flash drive as being as robust and I would definitely make sure you maintain backups.

  • Back up i-tunes library to flash drive

Have a 2010 MacBook Ai  and want to back up my i-tunes library and pictures in i-photos to a flash drive.
All I can find online is how to back up to Time Machine.  Don't have Time Machine and don't want to buy one.
Anyone can tell me how to back up music and photos to a USB flash drive?
    Thanks.

Click on the Music and Pictures items of the Finder's sidebar and drag the folders over. An iPhoto library needs to be stored on a drive, partition, or disk image formatted to Mac OS Extended with or without journaling.

  • External HD full, moving library to new drive?

I have my iTunes library on a 500GB external drive, which is now full. So I need to move it to a new, larger external drive. I've found lots of articles about moving the library from the internal drive to an external, but haven't found anything that talks about moving from one external drive to another. Is the process basically the same, or is there anything I need to be aware of when moving between external drives? I was think the easiest way would be to name the new drive the same as the old one and copy all the files over from my back up drive. Unfortunately, I gave the old drive the descriptive name "Lacie 500GB", but if it makes things much easier, I might be inclined to use the same name on the new drive even though it will be much bigger.
    Thanks.

If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will
    i only
    move your music folders location,
    i NOT
your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for step-by-step info:
Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse, "Move iTunes music/Library to new drive", 12:34pm Oct 12, 2004 CDT
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive, after the transfer and to work correctly, the ExHD must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes may reset the location of your music to the default.

  • Help formatting corrupted USB Flash Drive

My USB flash drive is now unreadable by my mac after neglecting to safely eject it. In disk utility I do not have the option to verify disk or repair disk. When trying to erase everything on it, an error message comes up saying "Unable to write to the last block of the device". Write status is still showing read/write. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Do I really have to go out and buy a new flash drive?

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Moved library to external drive ... now can't reconnect files HELP

Hi all. I've searched this forum for answers to my problem but to no avail.
In effort to free-up hard-drive space on my iMac, I decided to move my entire Aperture library folder to my external g-drive. Then, when I started Aperture up again, I opened preferences and pointed to the new library location on the external. I thought it would be that easy...
At first, it seemed to have worked--the files were all showing up in Aperture. However, when I tried to edit or export any of the images, I got a warning message:
"Versions with unavailable master images cannot be exported. The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again."
Also, there's a little yellow yeild icon with an arrow above on the images... I guess this indicates that there's a connection problem?
What should I do? I tried right-clicking the main "Library" icon in Aperture and clicking "Relocate Masters for Library..." but that resulted in another error message:
"Unavailable master images cannot be relocated. One or more of the selected master images are unavailable. You can relocate all available masters, or cancel, connect the required drives, and try again."
I have no idea what to do next? How do I fix this? I have a shoot today and I will need this resolved.... If anyone has any idea, please take me thru this. Oh, one more thing--I have over 11,000 photos so forget manually connecting each one.
One more thing: I am downloading Aperture 3 and will definitely migrate. Will it be easier to connect these files to Aperture 3?

OK, I couldn't figure it out so I set everything back to how it was before the move. Everything is working now and all the files are still in the original location.
Now, I want to move the entire library to the external drive. I've looked into this...please correct me if I'm wrong with the steps to move entire library from my computer to a external drive (note: I don't want to use the computer HD to store/process the photos--I want it all done from my external HD)/. Here's what I found in Aperture help...this is the closest thing I could find for directions on moving the entire Aperture contents from one location to another permanently. Will this work?:
    "Transferring Projects from Another System
If you work with several computers, or work on projects with other people, you may find it necessary to transfer projects from one Aperture system to another. Transferring projects is a simple import process.
To transfer a project from one computer to another:
1 Select the project you want to transfer, then choose File > Export > Project.
2 Enter a name and choose a location for the exported project.
3 If your project contains referenced images, select the “Consolidate images into exported project” checkbox to transfer the original masters as well as the previews and metadata as a self-contained project that another Aperture system can use.
If you are transferring projects with referenced images to another computer and want to transfer just the referenced image previews and not the masters, don’t select the “Consolidate images into exported project” checkbox.
4 Click Save. The project file is exported to the location you chose.
5 Connect or network the two computers together. For more information, see the documentation that came with the computers.
6 Open Aperture on the computer to which you want to transfer the project.
7 In the Projects inspector, select Library.
    8 Choose File > Import > Projects.
9 In the Import dialog, navigate to the location on the other computer where the project you want to transfer is stored, select the project, then click Open.
The selected project appears in the Projects inspector."

  • HELP: moved library to external HD and now I want it back on original drive

So here is what I did: All my music is on an external drive. Got a new bigger external drive because the other one is now full. Followed the instructions on apple's website for moving music libraries from one drive to another, consolidated and everything. I decided I do not like new drive so I wanted everything the way it was on the old drive. The music is there, but now all I get are those terrible exclamation points. When I try to play a song, iTunes can't find the song. under prefs, I have the music folder location pointed in the right direction. I am sure there is an easy fix, but for the life of me, I can not figure it out. I know somebody out there has the answer. Thanks.

my understanding of consolidate is that it COPIES the files to the new, or pointed, location. The files already exist there, and if it does copy the files there again, there will not be enough space. Maybe I don't understand the consolidate function well.

  • IPhoto Library moved to External Hard Drive and need help moving library

Hi - Recently I had my hard drive replaced. I purchased Disk Warrior and moved all files to my external hard drive. Now that my hard drive has been replaced, I'm having trouble moving all my photos back to iPhoto. Nearly all of my 8K+ photos are blurry after I import and enlarge. The ones that are fine have dimensions of or more than 1K x 1K. The digital photos that I moved and are blurry when enlarged are 340x360 (hundreds range). How can I correct?
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Audra

I think I might need to back up ---- So I had a failing hard drive, went to Apple and purchased Disk Warrior. Installed Disk Warrior and tried to recover everything from my hard drive. Then all that was recovered was supposedly moved to my external hard drive. I have now received my computer back with the new hard drive. I plug in my external hard drive and have been trying to move all my images from the external hard drive to iphoto. In both places (external HD and when the photos are imported), the image is at the lower dimensions.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Moving library to external drive

I am helping a client that has an iMac G4 with OS X 10.4. She has a LOT of photos in her iPhoto Library, around 25000 of them, and she is almost out of space on her internal hard drive. She has a new external drive that I would like to move her iPhoto library to.
I found instructions on the iPhoto information page. However, when I drag the iPhoto Library over to the external drive, it starts copying but then after a while I get an error about not being able to copy an alias file and it stops copying.
Also the copy procedure seems very slow, it was showing that it would take 9 hours to copy those photos. While I was watching the file transfer it was only moving about 100MB every minute. Does this model just have the older slow USB connection?

Hi, Techserv. Any iMac G4 built before September 2003 has USB 1.1, not USB 2.0 ports. With such a machine it makes no sense at all to use a USB-only external hard drive. Your client should have a FireWire-capable drive enclosure instead. It would be many times faster.
