HELP-Music Library doubled in storage
I'm running out of space on my computer & the culprit is my music library & I think it is being double saved - somehow. In itunes my music library is 26.61 GB. But in the storage path: music:itunes:itunes music it is 54.49. I've checked the listing of artists in the storage path and it seems to match with what is in itunes.
Please advise if I am, somehow, using up too much unnecessary space, and how to get rid of it.

One way to "clean" the iTunes folder is to go into iTunes preferences and change the iTunes Music Folder location, say call it something like "iTunes Music 2". OK out of preferences then use the consolidate command.
The consolidate command will COPY everything iTunes is using that isn't currently located in the location specified in the preferences into that location and updates the date base to now access the file from there. Usually it is used to pull in those few files spread around the drive into the central location.
Since you just changed the location, NOTHING is in that location so iTunes will then copy EVERYTHING it accesses to that location. Any orphaned files in the old iTunes Music folder will be left behind. After the consolidation you can compare the folders to see how much file space was used my orphaned files.
At this point you can delete the original iTunes Music folder to free up the space. You can then either leave the new folder as is, or if you want it back to normal chance the preference back to using iTunes Music as the folder then rename the folder in the finder to remove the "2".
Note that the above assumes plenty of room on your internal drive so hold the original 54-sh GB folder and another 26-ish GB of your new library folder. If you don't have that much free space, then an external hard drive is another place you can point your iTunes for the iTunes music folder and consolidate it there.

Help- music library disappeard after upgrading
Having just upgraded to iTune 5, the program will no longer load my iTunes library. I went to its preferences and ensured that the path was proper, but to no avail. I have tried for the last 4 hours to access the article on the support page about this, but I get a message that the server can not locate/load this article. Please help. Thanks.

However, I now have iTunes 5 working as it should, and with all of my music and my playlists. Just before upgrading the first time I cloned my entire hard drive to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. When I could not get my playlist back, I erased my primary hard drive and cloned the external drive back to my primary. I then did the upgrade again, but with some changes. The first time I upgraded I accepted the Software Upgrade "offer" to upgrade 4 things at once - Quicktime, Java, iTunes, and something about iTunes for a phone. This time I first did the Quicktime and Java, restarted, repaired disk, permissions, and ran Disk Warrior. Then I upgraded the two iTunes downloads, and did all of the above maintenance again. It now works perfectly. However, I have no idea if these changes had anything to do with my success, or if it was just plain dumb luck and the alignment of the stars.

RED Circle/Square covered my whole iphone music library
Upgraded to 7.04 on my iphone 4 then attempted to add a new album via itunes which resulted in RED Circle/Square covering my whole music library. I can now only play one album - the new one Grrrrrr. Not a good exchange for 8 gyg worth of music. I can still see the old tracks but they do not play. Any help would be appreciated.

No this is a new computer that I was using for the first time - but simply to move a cd copy onto the phone. IT appears that everything is still there as I can see the disk allocation within itunes still states that I have 7.2 gyg worth of music. Bad thing though is that the phone when browsed via NT explorer states that I have 5 gyg free which suggests I have lost something. Ive tries accessing backups and the like and I'm getting nowhere really.
Ive attached a jpeg below and would really appreciate any help - music library took 3 years to put together. I'm gutted and not impressed with apple's proprietary tactics and nonsense. -
Why won't Itunes store my music library in my User/Music Folder?
If I select my user name as a storage location in Itunes, Itunes creates folders for artist name right in my user folder, instead of in my user/music folder. This gets especially annoying because if I tell Itunes to store my "media" in my user/music folder, Itunes will then create a folder named "music" in my "music" folder and will also create additional folders in my user/music folder location to store other non-music media in as well. It is very annoying to see this lack of affinity for folders between two Apple created programs.Help iTunes locate your media folder:

ITunes match has destroyed my music library. Help!
So basically several years ago I bought an external hard drive to combat low storage space on my laptop, and moved all my iTunes files to there. However, the hard drive is broken, so most of my music could only actually be played on my iPod, the only songs I could play from my laptop were ones which had their files saved on to the laptop itself. I saw about itunes match and thought that would enable me to save songs from my iPod on to the cloud, thus allowing me to access all my songs from my laptop too. However, instead my ipod has now also lost all the songs that were saved to my hard drive, and only has the few songs I had saved to my iPod. So right now it seems I've paid £21 for the privilege of losing the vast majority of my music library. Is there anything I can do about this?
On a side note, this issue has made me realise how terrible and counter-intuitive apple tech support is.Sorry to here about your problem. I'm afraid that there is nothing you can do to recover your lost music. Itunes match works by scanning your iTunes library on your computer not your ipod.
Possibly, you could see if you can get someone to recover the music from your ext hard drive.

I bought a song on iTunes and it started downloading but then about half way through it seemed to stop downloading so I pressed the square stop button in he middle of the downloading circle so that I could try and restart the download. But when I went back to iTunes, instead of having the cloud and the arrow to let me download the song from the cloud next to it, it said "Play" as if I had already downloaded the song. So I went back to my music library to try and find the song but it's not there and iTunes isn't letting me download it cause it says I already have it. Please help.

So, I'm trying to sync all my Jason Mraz to my iPhone. On iTunes, after I plug in my iPhone to my MacBookPro, on the iPhone tab I check the artist "Jason Mraz." I then sync my phone. I goes through the process then when I check the music library on my iPhone nothing shows up. I then try the same procedure with checking each individual album. Same thing. I tried turning the phone off and on to see if it would show up after I did that, and still nothing. Please help me!!
Un-sync all your music to remove it from the device, then restart (hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go). Now re-sync your music.

I am trying to home share with my new MacBook. The music library I am wishing to share is not displaying anywhere on my new laptop under music or library. My computer is authorized and I have tried restarting itunes, etc. Any help/ideas?
Are you using the same ID for homesharing on all devices.
By the way shared libraries don't show up under either 'Music' or 'Libraries'. -
hello , basically i had some music on my ipod touch 4g , i wanted to sync my music from the music library on itunes to my ipod, to do this i clicked on my devise on itunes and then clicked music and then clicked sync music, on the top of the page it said "backing up (step 1of 3). It stayed like this for atleast 7 hours and when i ejected the ipod their was no music in my ipod ! help me , i want to quickly copy the music library onto my ipod...

Help: failed iBook, how can I transfer safely my music library to a new Mac
My iBook display won't work anymore and also connecting an external monitor does not help. Probably the graphic card has failed and the repair is not worth. I will most likely buy a new iMac in the next days.
Now the problem. How can I get all my iPod music and playlists to the new iMac.
I have my 20+ Gbyte of music on the iPod and (fortunately) the library is on an external hard disc.
The iPod is in autosync with the iBook.
HOWEVER the music library database file and .xml file are still on the iBook, so I will probably not be able to recover them anymore!
The question is:
- is there a way to copy the music from the external hard disk to the new Imac AND re-sync the iPod to the new iMac without loosing the song ratings, playlists etc.?
- I know there are third-party applications to copy music/playlists from the iPod itself, but I have been discouraged as the massive copy operation could damage the iPod hard-disk.
Hence I would prefer to recover the music files from the external hard disk.
I know I could simply import the music in the new iTunes installation from the hard disk, but in this way I would have to scratch the iPod and re-associate it with the new iTunes, loosing all playlists and songs ratings.

iBook Mac OS X (10.3.9)Hey- I'm in a little different position, but thought that whoever answers the above poster's questions probably knows the answer to mine too.
I have all my songs on an external hard drive which my computer has been having trouble recognizing. Therefore, I can't access my songs. Am I understanding the original poster above correctly that I have to purchase some 3rd party software to transfer those songs from my iPod back to my iBook? -
Basically my iPhone 4 asked for my Apple ID and I entered it thinking it was just some check or something and then I've just been scrolling through my music library and there is a whole U2 album there and i have never even heard of U2... i clicked on one of the songs to see what it was and it came up with "This device is already associated with an apple ID. If you download past purchases with your apple ID, you cannot auto download or download past purchases with a different Apple ID for 90 days."
I Can't delete the album like I can with my other music from my phone and I don't really want to connect my phone to my laptop incase I have been hacked and it could give the person all access to my phone?

Disappointed with IOS7, i had organized my music library as per the Genre and now im unable to hear all the songs of the same genre like in the earlier versions. The options of "all albums" and "all songs" are missing in this version of IOS. Help Please..
It would be nice if you told others the steps you've tried and/or how you used to have your setup.
Anyway have you tried tapping MORE this will then bring you to
the selection-list of Audiobooks, Genres, Compilations & Composers.
Selecting Genres gives you a list of all your music split into genres which was set within the Music downloaded via iTunes or uploaded from CD or which you may have set yourself.
Then you just select the Genre you want:
If certent songs are not correctly gategorised you may need to go into iTunes and reselect via Get-info
>Info>Genre and change it there. That way you should end up with all songs of Jazz or other in 1 place. -
I reinstalled my computer's operating system. How do I transfer music from my Ipod to my music library? It transfered some, but not all my music. I authorized the computer, but it did not help.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases.
The ipod is not a backup device.
You need to copy everything back using your backup copy. -

"a couple of weeks ago i decided i needed to move my itunes folder to an external hd to save space on my macbook. everything was smooth except for itunes not being able to find a quarter of my music and me having to locate the songs one by one. i bought an iphone yesterday and decided my life would be much easier to move the music back to the computer and make room by moving other things off the macbook. i was also thinking this may remedy the missing file problem. nope. i know how to find the songs and they're in the right place, just wondering if there is an easier way then locating 3000+ songs individually? not sure whats going on. thanks "Again many thanks. Under iTunes Media though I do not have folders for Books,iPod Games, Mobile Applications, Movies, TV Shows so I only have Auto Add to iTunes, Music, Downloads and Podcasts - My question here is is this OK.
Next - Library files that you mention are there but do not end .itdb
Next - in the main iTunes folder followingon from Artwork and Media folders there is some other iTunes database stuff like Library Extras, Library Genius, Library and Music Library(xml) all dated 10/02/12 plus MimiPlayer .dll dated 21/02/14 and Set Up Short Cut dated22/03/14
AND there is also a Programme Files folder with a sub folder holding file folders called CD Configuration,iTunes Resources, iTunes Help Resources, iTunes Mini Player Resources and Mozilla Plugins all dated 24/03/14 ( when I downloaded the new iTunes) and then a lot of application extension stuff from 2011
To recap I unistalled the old 32 bit iTunes and installed the new 11.1.5 (64 bit) version over the weekend SO is any of the old stuff listed above required.
Outcome right now is that as previously I can only call up the Downloaded music not Podcats or CD copies.
