HELP!! my computer shuts down at random ONLY when power supply is attached

I still have the factory power supply. My problem just happens when ever it feels like it. I could be watching something on Quicktime or have Adium running. I have had it happen to me regardless if it was being used a little or a lot. But It ONLY happens when my power supply is attached. If I plug in my power supply to charge my computer it will shut off. I have read some other posts pointing to the problem being the logic board and that a few of the iBook G4's are subject. If this is a common problem with this computer model I think Apple should recall them and fix the problem. Any insight will be great.

Alright everyone it has been a week since I replaced my DC board and no problems. But we all know how Murphy's law works BUT I'm calling this one fixed. Thanks for your suggestions and help

  • Satellite A215 - computer shuts down at random

I own a Satellite A215-S6804, and I've had it for about a year and a half.  The past six months or so, I'll be in the middle of doing something and the screen goes completely black.  It often happens when I play one of the Windows games (like Spider Solitaire), but it has happened when I play a video from the Internet, also.  I know it's not just the light in the monitor, because I can't see anything if I look close enough, and if music is playing at the time, it completely stops.  It appears as though the computer shuts down but the screen stays on.  I also have had the laptop plugged in with the battery in, but within the last month or so decided to take the battery out while it was plugged in (this made no difference; the problem still persists).  What's happening to my laptop?

This has been happening to me recently.  Twice this eveing.  What is happening?  How do we fix it?  Or is something dying in it?   dinkysews

  • HELP! Computer shutting down while loading FL studio Plugins! High CPU load?!

Good day everyone. I am in dire need of some help concerning my Hp Pavilion p6-2330 . I am a producier and I use a programmed called FL studio.
I've never had this problem before but now it happens almost everytime. When I open a project with a lot of VST plug-ins or a new VST plug-in it just immeadiatly prompts windows "shutting down". I am not sure if its exclusive to FL studio or a High CPU load in general.
I've tried a lot. Replaced my PSU. Blow out the dust from my hardive throuroughly. I really doubt its a overheating problem because it only happens when opening a project with a lot of vst plugins or opening a new vst on top. and my CPU isnt hot
Is there a crash report i can look at to see the reason its shutting down? What can i do?!

    Hi,
The following link shows specs of your computer:
       http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c03499435
given "only happens when opening a project with a lot of vst plugins or opening a new vst on top." I think the cheapest option now is to increase RAM from 6GB to say 16GB (using information from the above link). Before goinng out to buy more RAM, you may want to insrease system page file first (similar for Windows 8.1):

  • (Z77A-G45) HELP! Computer shut down while working and... never boot up again

Assembled the other day but...today it was working fine. Sudenly shut down and never boot up again.

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Voltage at 24 pin and 8 pin connectors are ok and under the tolerance as I saw here http://pcsupport.about.com/od/insidethepc/a/power-supply-voltage-tolerance.htm
I will check the other rails.
Hmmm... starting to suspect that the cause is something else.
Missed the beeps in the past.
This mobo (z77a-g45) never emitted a single one.
Not even at startup when it was ok!
    Oh man!
The computer was running well and then suddenly screen went black, no disks activity, no keyboard response, no video, no reset switch working. Fans continue spinning.
Had to pull the plug to stop the fans. Then plug it again but no boot. Just cpu phase led 1 is lit, fans activity and nothing more. No welcome screen, no disks activity!
I will try to test the ram on another computer.
    Any other clues?

  • My computer shuts down instead of sleeps when battery drains...

    Hi there!
So, I just got a new MacBook Pro (the better 15" one) in June. I've noticed, however, that when my battery drains, and the little warning comes up that says "your computer will go to sleep in a few minutes to preserve data," if I let it run all the way out, it doesn't go to sleep but just shuts down. When I reopen my computer after plugging it in, all my stuff is back, but I do have to press the power button and start it up again.
My old computer (White MacBook 2006) always actually went to sleep, and only if I let it sleep for a long time did it shut off.
Have they changed the behavior? Do the laptops only shut down, and no longer sleep when the battery is gone? Or is something wrong with my computer. I'm getting all my data back, and all the windows and stuff are still open, so that's not a problem for me, but if my computer is working incorrectly only three months after buying it, then I'd like to know...
Thanks! Let me know what further information you need to help!

Your computer is not shutting down — it's hibernating, also called "safe sleep". This is indicated by the fact that everything you were working on is undisturbed when you wake it by pressing the power button.
The contents of RAM are written to the hard drive before the machine enters safe sleep, so that if the battery drains completely before you wake it, the contents of RAM (including your unsaved work) won't be completely lost. This is different from ordinary sleep, in which the machine simply suspends all activity without writing anything to disk. If the machine went into ordinary sleep after giving you a low-battery warning and not getting any cooperation from you (i.e. you didn't heed the warning and plug in AC power), and then you didn't wake it for twelve or fifteen hours, the battery might have gone completely dead and your unsaved work would be lost.
In short, yes, this is new behavior compared to several years ago, and from what you tell us, your machine is working exactly as it's supposed to.

  • Stumper!  Sawtooth shuts down on startup - only when HD is attached.

I've been reading this forum for answers, and no one seems to have this particular problem. Care for a real stumper? Put on your genius hats, ladies and gentlemen!
I have been upgrading a G4 Sawtooth, 450MHz. I replaced the DVD-R with a new one and installed a Newertech 1.2GHz upgrade. So far so good.
Then I replaced the HD with a 320 Gb Seagate drive. Aha, the clever ones among you will say, the G4 can only see 128 Gb of that. Yes, and so I installed Leopard 10.5.8 on the drive using ANOTHER COMPUTER and then also installed InTech's Speed Tools (http://www.intechusa.com/). When I went to plug the drive in the G4, everything worked just fine. For a while. Now I get the blinking question mark.
OK, so I figure I was courting disaster with the Speed Tools. Something has gone wrong and the G4 cannot see all 320Gb of te startup drive, some files are not loading, and it's unable to start up.
So I bought an 80Gb drive and plugged it in. Installed Leopard fresh from the DVD right on the new 80Gb drive, right with the G4. The G4 started up on the Leopard DVD just fine! It ran for about an hour to install the OS, and then it went to restart up on the 80Gb drive. And promptly shut down!
Now whenever I try to start up on that drive it shuts down immediately!
    2. Zapped PRAM, replaced battery, reset PMU, unplugged it for several days.
    3. Plugged the 80Gb into the ATA-33 DVD/Zip drive connector. No luck, same shutdown.
    4. Adjusted the jumpers, neither "Cable Select" nor "Master" seems to have any effect.
    5. The G4 starts up with NO DRIVE plugged in at all, and will stay on as long as I keep it on.
I've ruled out power supply (the G4 runs fine booting off the Leopard DVD).
I've ruled out the disc (fresh from the wrapper, and apparently it will work long enough to install Leopard on it).
I've ruled out the ATA bus is bad (it works fine to install Leopard on the 80Gb, so something must be happening).
My next step is to put Leopard on an external and try starting up on a USB drive. My guess is that it's going to start up fine, but we shall see. Any advice? Oh, please say yes, and let me know it is a dumb thing I have forgotten to do...
    I'm at my wits end!

    New update:
    Heck, I've driven everyone away.
So I installed 10.4, that worked. Installed the 10.4.8 combo update, directly from Apple, in an attempt to get it back up to 10.4.11. Installed fine, but when it went to restart, it hung on the grey Apple with clock screen - for about 30 minutes and eventually I shut it down.
Weird, this is what happened last time. OK on 10.4, tried to update to 10.5 and it locks up, only slightly differently this time.
Then I remembered. This has a Newertech upgrade, and I reset PRAM and everything else but never reflashed the firmware. Maybe this is what is wrong? Popped the CD in, flashed the firmware, etc.
Now it won't even come on!
Light on the power button goes off, discs are spinning, fans are turning, but nothing is happening! Cannot reset PRAM, cannot boot off a CD, nothing.
Any advice? I know I should have quit while I was ahead!

  • Computer shuts down during render/prerender

This was not my original problem but it has occured before and I know it will occur again.
My computer shuts down for no reason when I try to render or prerender video in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. From what I can tell it is a general issue with premiere that I am having. I have tried multiple video formats, multiple video lengths, and multiple rendering options and I am still getting random shut downs during rendering.
Here are some specs for my computer which is a laptop:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit OS)
Proccessor: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 ghz
    Ram: 8 gigs of it
    Video: Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT
1 Hard Drive w/ 280 gb of space
As a recap.... My exact problem is that during the rendering or pre rendering proccess my computer simply shuts down as in it turns off.
I can also add that the computer does act strangely leading me to believe that theres some hardware or software incompatibility. While it is rendering I can hear the CPU fan pick up which is usually normal for any rendering application but what I noticed was that it doesnt stop speeding up. Its like if it was going into an overload and I can confirm that at its peak, the computer shuts down.
To add troubles... whenever I pre render any video and it succesfully renders.... Premeire will hang up really really bad if I try to play the pre rendered preview. In otherwords when you preview a video that it pre rendered it usually plays smooth and everything is fine. After I pre render something though and play it I can tell its locking up because the timeline bar is really jumpy and the video playback skips also.
This is the problem I would really love fixed. I usually have to button smash my keyboard until I lock premiere up and then once it unfreezes itself i can preview my work smoothly. This is however like a good 5 mins of my time trying to get the preview to play smoothly though so its really hurting how fast I can work.
If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. I will be trying to run the same stuff on my older laptop and observe the results. I personally think CS4 is incompatible with windows 7.

If you have a recent nVidia driver installed, you might want to check to see if you have either of these two modules loaded - check in the nVidia console:
PhysX, or 3D Stereovision. If you have them, definitely disable 3D Stereo, and test. If no improvement, disble PhysX and test.
Also, try adjusting your Hardware Acceleration. If Max, set to Min and test. If Min, set to Max and test. If either helps, try incrementing up, or down, until it no longer helps.
Last, check your OpenGL settings. If ON, turn OFF. If OFF, turn ON.
It appears that you have a laptop. Is that correct?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • My macbook shuts down at random times...

  • Auto shuts down - could it be the power adapter?

I'm having problems with my first generation macbook lately, it will auto shuts down (not sleep) with the power adapter still attached. And when it shuts down, the adapter still light up green. Im working without the battery, it is removed all the time cos it is dead already.
Could the problem lies with the power adapter? but it's still shows green light, that means there is still power running thru? I would like to test with another power adapter but i don have friends who have a mac. I don't want to spend money one another power adapter, without knowing the cause.
Is it possible to do a test on the power adpater? thanks!

A test you could try (rather than another adapter) is to put the "dead" battery back in and run it on AC. As Gregory said, without the battery, the slightest knock to the magsafe connecter may cause it to disconnect, even momentarily, thus you lose all power and your MB turns off. Hopefully the battery will have enough capacity to allow the MB to stay on (briefly) when the connecter is disconnected for that moment. Just an idea.
    Good luck.

  • Help with ipod and computer shut downs...please.

I've posted this in two other forums to no avail -- lots of views, but no help.
My family now has 3 ipods (we only had 1 before) and yesterday I was trying to get them all set up - updates on the actual ipod, and I've updated itunes to 7.5. There are two issues here:
    1) I am not able to register ANY of the ipods. I get all the way through the process to the very end and then it gives me an error message (after clicking the "No thanks" at the bottom of the page that asks if you want to download the videos) saying that the service couldn't be found? Or something like that. Ok, fine...I can handle not being able to register them for the time being.
    2) I could keep itunes on all day long, as long as the Ipod is NOT CONNECTED. As soon as I connect the ipod (any of the 3 new ones - they all do the same thing) - ok, maybe not as soon as, but shortly thereafter - my entire computer shuts down. No error message, no blue screen of death, no warning - it just shuts down. It might be after I move a song from the "purchased" folder to the actual ipod. Or, as happened yesterday, it's right smack in the middle of a download (happened with both videos AND songs) and then of course, I have to try and purchase it again. I'm not even sure if it took my money already, but if it did, I'm SOL because I paid, but don't have the video/song since it never finished downloading.
I've done everything that's been recommended to me - I disabled all my start up programs (except the windows ones) and that didn't resolve anything.
    My system is as follows:
Windows XP Home Edition (all updated except for microsoft office 2003)
    Service Pack 2
    AMD Athalon 64 3000+
    1.81 GHz
    2GB RAM
Not sure what else you need to know, to try and help me resolve this. Thanks for your time.

  • Help! My computer shuts down semi-unexpectedly.

Please somebody help! My computer shuts down semi-unexpectedly. I say 'semi' unexpectedly, cos, by now it seems an accident waiting to happen ONLY when I play a 3D game.
Now, whenever I play a 3D game there's a good chance the computer just shuts itself down, without ANY warning. Can be within 5 minutes, can be after an hour, it sometimes doesn't happen at all.
After this the computer will not start up at all, and the D-bracket tells me the processor is the culprit. At first I waited a while (+/- one hour) and the thing would start up again as if nothing happened.
After it started happening more frequently (or maybe I should say, 'after it didn't go away by itsself') I just didn't wait, but tried to find out what went wrong, and how to fix it.
All I have learned so far is that if -after a 'radical shutdown'- I release the levers on my processor's heatsink, and wiggle it a bit, then refasten them the computer will start up again, no problem. But ONLY if I disconnect the powercable from my machine ENTIRELY first.
I'm don't have the technical knowledge myself to make anything out of this, and am at my wit's end by now.
    My specs:
    mobo: 865PE-NEO2
    mem: 512MB Pc3200 dual channel
    processor: PIV 2.4GhZ
    video: Radeon9700PRO
    PSU: 400W
    Also:
    - All BIOS frequencies are at default
    - Got six ventilators in a case that is always open.
    - Got Corecenter running in the background with very tight temperature alert settings.
    - I have no other problems with my computer, and I do not overclock.
All this at least leads me to believe it's not a power-, frequency- or heat issue. But then again, I'm no expert. At all.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Juju

    Is ur CPU OCed ?????
And whats ur VDimm, cuz i had the same Problem when running Gothic II with all details aon 1600x1200 2xAniso & 4xFSAA.
I believe the Problem is that ur RAM shuts down under full load if ur VDimm is too low, because all MSI Boards dynamically OC a littel (3-4 Mhz FSB) when running under full load (I read that on http://www.tomshardware.com).
On my system with standard Vdimm @2.5 V and FSB Oced to 250 my system would crash almost everytime when I played Gothic II. Then i found out that the board booted at 407 Mhz DDR Clock. That's when i started suspecting that my Rams couldn't handle 407 Mhz when running at an extremely low 2.5 VDimm.
    So try the following:
-Increase VDimm from 2.5 up to 2.7 V in small steps and check ur system stability every time stop when everything seems fine.
-If u'r Oced don't go for FSB 250 (and multiplier at 5:4) try sth. like 243 so even if dynamically oced ur Rams won't go too far above 400 Mhz.
P.S.: My VDimm is now at 2.6 and FSB at 244 and everything is fine.

Hey!! Wondering if you've learned anything more about this issue? I'm running my macbook with some similar issue.. when running on batt, shuts down at random, can't find any pattern as yet.. I have found that it shuts down in Hardware test mode on batt as well.. I've done a good AHT, SMC, pram reset.. everything else is fine... just this shut-off thing... my batt is in perfectly good condition.. and plenty of charge.. I can't decharge the batt anyway, it won't run long enough unplugged!! I've thought that checking into Snow leopard might help.. but not seen anything about that yet.
    Any info would be great
    Thanks
