HELP!!! My emac is dying

Hi,
1) My eMac will not allow me to shut down or restart my computer using the shut down option under the blue apple.
2) Every time I get a window saying that I need to click ok or cancel, it will crash, or unexpectedly quit the program it is in.
3) I have a 30gb hard drive in my mac, and 20 of it seems to be gone, I have only tried to work on 1 movie in iMovie, which now quits any time the spinner comes up, and a couple of games.
My mac is about 3-4 years old, is there any way I can save it until I buy a new one? Because it is to the point where I can not work on it anymore.
thanks.

Hi Daniel, Welocme to Discussions.
As John asked:
Please list your computer specs here In Discussions sidebar - ->
Go to Preferences > "My computer" and tell us your model, iMac, eMac, PwrMac, etc. G3, G4, G5, Mac OS Version (10.4.x 10.3.x), 000 MB RAM, 000 MHz All on your blue Apple pull down menu > "About this Mac"
(Also, 000 GB HD) for this choose your hard drive then "Get Info" (COMMAND + i. tell us capacity and avaiable) This helps us help you better.
1) Often a connected peripheral kicks back a signal to the cpu preventing shutdown or restart. Disconnect all peripheral devices. Remeber to unmount any firewire drives before disconnecting. Now test your Mac with only your Apple keyboard and mouse connected.
2) Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences > Accounts > "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.
3) May be covered in 1 & 2
I don't think your Mac is "dying", let us know.

  • HELP! eMac Keeps Dying

    I have had my daughter's eMac in repair three times now and am my wit's end. Every time I turn it on, it works for a while, and then when I cold boot, the power button will not turn the computer back on. And then we go back to the Apple store again for repairs. What in the heck is happening? I have never ever had these problems with other computers. Any ideas???

    John Brasher,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    What's been repaired or replaced? What repairs did the repair shop report on the three occasions they've had it? Have they replaced the power switch itself? (The pins on the wire connecting the button to the motherboard are reported easy to bend.)
    You may want to check the Apple: Find Service website and check if there are alternate service providers in your area.

  • Help!  My computer died... is my library gone!

    Our computer died Monday. We were not able to recover anything from our hard drive. When I downloaded Itunes on to our new computer, my library was empty. All of my music is loaded onto my Ipod nano (newest generation) If I hook up my Ipod to my new computer, can I get my music back? I'm afraid to hook it up b/c I don't know what will happen since my library is now empty. Can someone please help? Thanks!!

    Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
    Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod.
    The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only

    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
    iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
    There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
    Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Need help with eMac NOW!!!

    I accidently put the Mac folder (forget what it is called, basically the OS) into the trash, and now when I boot it it just goes to a grey screen and says weird things. Even when I put in the Mac OS X install disc and hold "c". Someone please help me.

    1) Borrow a friend's Mac laptop (with firewire) and a firewire 6pin-6pin cable, and put the eMac into target disk mode, so that you can then mount it on the other computer, and get the System out of the trash.
    2) Remove the hard drive, after opening the eMac up and avoiding the dangerous currents, fragile power button, etc, and put it in an external case, plug into another Mac, and get the System out of the trash.
    3) Buy/Borrow Tiger on CD... and instal a new system. Once installed, restart the eMac, then drag the System out of the trash... (though the Tiger instal program may kill the existing system even tho it is in the trash?...)

  • Need help with EMAC

    My Emac screen freezes after a while and the only thing i can do is move the mouse. Nothing else happens i have to shut the computer down. Could this be a Capacitor Problem? Any help would be Appriecated.
    <Edited by Moderator>

    Dave,
    As dolbinau has pointed out, gauging by your serial number, your eMac may be affected by bad capacitors; a problem that Apple recognised a while ago, and set up a Repair Program to fix - free of charge.
    dolbinau's confusion over the symptoms of the capacitor problem is Apple's fault. The main symptom on eMacs with bad caps is that the computer will freeze, for no apparent reason, and cannot be "unfrozen" without pressing the power button and turning the computer off.
    Apple for some reason did not include this symptom in the Repair Program's notes.
    Anyway - because your eMac falls in the right range, you should contact Apple NOW to talk to them about it. Technically the Repair Program has expired (3 years from the date of the computer's purchase), however if you push (ie ask to speak to a supervisor) then they should agree to repair it for free.

  • Need help with emac restoration

    I bought an eMac in a garage sale. It came with Tiger installed in it. I am completely new to Mac OS's. In the effort of trying to upgrade it to Leopard, I think I erased the hard disk(MacHD). After that it immediately restarted and got stuck on the apple logo screen with a spinning wheel below it. Now I didn't get a CD/DVD when I bought it. And with the help of my friend now I have a leopard image in a hard disk.( I have a 250gb hard drive, about 180 is partitioned with fat32 filesystem, and the other 60gb has the leopard image). I restored the leopard .dmg into the partition using the disk utility application with the help of his mac book. So can anyone help me on how I need to proceed.

  • _ (Help, my iBook is dying)

    <html>
    <title>
    Help
    </title>
    <body>
    I think my iBook contracted an STD after playing with his buddy, the iMac G5.
    (N.B. the iMac is not relevant to the problem, just like the <html> codes[I'm bored!?])
    But anyways, my iBook is a 1.33 14 inch. I got it in December 2004 (X-Mas) I use it every single day of my life! But now my battery is dying, it dies at a rate of 1% per minute ± Therefore MAX operating time is ±1.4 Hours. I do not turn off my iBook ever, I sleep it.
    But anyways in XRG (X Resource Graph) my current is given as about 1400 mAh. Less then half from december last year (2900). My iBook is no longer under warranty and I have no money for a new battery. I'm wondering if anyone else has dead battery issues?
    If so can anyone help me get over my iBook's Terminal illness?
    </body>
    </html>

    Why! My poor iBook's life has been shortened by so long. It's still a young computer. Better save up for a new battery for X-mas. By then I'll probably get a new one for the same price!
    Why Are iBook batteries quoted to last so long? Are people expected to only use their batteries for a month then replace them? I just think that the rate of deterioration is far to great! Just say, If I had applecare, which I don't, would I get a new battery or replacement of some type?

  • Help connecting emac to Router via Belkin Wireless Bridge FSD7330

    Dear All,
    I've been given an old emac without an Airport card and would like to connect it to my Netgear WGR614v9 wireless router which I run two XP laptops through.
    I've been told that I need a wireless bridge so have bought the Belkin FSD7330. Unfortunately there appears to be no mac software or drivers with either installation cd, despite the manufacturers saying they'll work with macs and I'm out of ideas...
    The emac connects fine to the internet when hardwired to the router but won't seem to pick up the router or bridge wirelessly... Can anyone give me an idiots guide on how to get started please?
    Any help gratefully received! Many thanks

    Hello,
    As Allan already indicated, no special software is needed for a (configured) wireless Ethernet bridge; you can use it with a Mac or a PC.
    There are different versions of the F5D7330 (one or two antennas; colour). Various variants are mentioned at Belkin's UK support centre web site.
    Have a look at this web page regarding firmware. For example, the 1.00.09 version will update applicable units sold with only WEP security to WPA (the use of which is a good idea). You will need a PC to carry out firmware updates.
    Generally speaking, do not run any (PC) setup wizard software from a supplied CD. Instead, make use of the web-based interface. You should be able to run a browser on a Mac or a PC, but the pages may not look the same everywhere (if there is a problem with one browser, try another).
    If necessary, a manual can be downloaded from the support centre. Use the instructions for setting up the F5D7330 wireless Ethernet bridge in an "infrastructure" mode. The security configuration page displayed after a firmware update (to WPA) may differ a bit from the information in the manual. WPA is normally easier to set up than WEP.

  • Please help! emac wont boot after installing os 9 alongside os x!

    Hi,
    I am a teacher. My school recently gave me an emac to use in my classroom that has Tiger installed on it. I have a bunch of OS 9 games that I want the kids to be able to use, so I decided to try to install OS 9 alongside os x. I just installed OS 9 on the same partition as os x using an OS 9 emac installation disc. I had to install OS 9 on the same partition as OS X because I am not allowed to repartition the school computer. I tested out classic in OS X, but it didn't play the games well. I then tried to boot naively into os 9 by going into system preferences, then to startup, and then selected OS 9 as what to boot into. When I restarted, the only thing I was left with was a floppy disk with a flashing question mark inside. I tried to boot back into OS X by holding the option key, but my only option for booting is OS 9. I then tried to boot back into OS X by holding down the "x" key, but it still tries to boot into OS 9. Could someone please help?
    Thanks!!
    -Stacy

    Hi, Stacy -
    Since the machine boots to the OS 9 Install CD, it is indeed OS 9 bootable, by definition.
    Since the installer on the CD was able to 'see' the destination drive, then that drive does have OS 9 drivers on it.
    Those two are the primary causes for a machine not being able to use OS 9 as a boot OS.
    I assume you accepted the default install of OS 9 and did not customize it. If that is the case, then it should have installed all files needed by your machine in order to use it as a bootable OS.
    About all that is left is make sure that the OS 9 System Folder has been blessed - registered as a bootable OS. To do that, boot to the OS 9 Install CD but do not run the installer. Instead, open the icon for the hard drive (if it is not already open), locate and open the System Folder (not the folder named just System - that's OSX). Drag the files named Finder and System (both are loose in the System Folder's window) out to the desktop. Close the Syatem Folder. Then drop those two files back into the closed System Folder.
    Once that is done the System Folder should be displaying a miniture glyph of the Mac OS logo superimposed on the icon for that folder.
    One other question, re the CD you used for the installation. Was it a Software Install CD specific to that machine (does it show eMac on the label)? Or was it a retail OS 9 Install CD (white label, gold 9)?

  • HELP! eMac not accepting Tiger upgrade 'hang installation'

    OK, I'm not a techhead but I'm learning! I'm getting a "panic" and "missing driver" msg when trying to boot Tiger disk on my eMac which currently is running Panther 3.9. It's freezing and displaying a 'hang installation'. There's something? I need, a driver? or perhaps something I need to clear or reset in Panther. The eMac is compatible, it's in the software. If anyone can help me out here I would appreciate it.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Are you using a retail Tiger install disc which looks like
    That does not say Drop-in, update, or upgrade on it?
    If not, then you are using the wrong disc, and that disc can't be used on an eMac.

  • Help, the hard drive died

    Help, hardisk died. 2 questions:
    1. Easy to replace the hard drive?
    2. The main issue is that I cannot see Order Number, EMC Number, Model Identifier, Serial Number, Intel processor number or any identification needed to buy a new hard drive, except the Model Number (which is A1278). The laptop was purchased in 2008 or 2009. The processor is 1066MHz. The hard drive (made by Fujitsu) has a serial number, model number and part number documented on the drive. How to identify a new hard drive?

    I found the original box, which says that:
    Part No. MB466ZH/A
    Serial No. W884990F1AQ
    So looks like this is my MacBook:
    However, there are so many hard drives that I am confused. How to ensure I get the right one?
    Would these work? How do I know if they would work?

  • Help Solve eMac Jittering/Flickering Screen Mystery

    The eMac: 1.25 GHz, 256 MB, 40 GB, CD, USB 2.0, OS 10.4.11 with all updates. S/N: G85506PTSCF, manufactured Dec. 2005 (week 50).
    It was purchased by a local grammar school in early 2006 and performed without flaw until recently. Now it has a constantly flickering/jittering screen when it's warm. There are no smells and no sounds, just an unstable video display. On cold startup the video jitters and jumps, and the vertical screen size shrinks about 2 inches from the top and bottom, then slowly grows until the Dock and Menu Bar can barely be seen. It does this a couple of times until it's warmed up. The horizontal size, which was set using System Preferences when the video had stabilized, does not change; it always shows a light color in the little "dot windows" at maximum image size on each side.
    Sometimes the video display stays rock solid for hours on end, going to sleep and waking up with just a hint of flickering/jittering. But most of the time the video display is constantly jittering, flickering and changing vertical dimensions, which is why it was taken out of service.
    It has passed every diagnostic test I could find to run on it. I even exchanged the meager 256 MB memory stick for a known-good 512 MB stick, which made no difference. The PRAM battery measures over 3.6 volts. I took it apart far enough to look at all the capacitors on the logic board, downconverter board and analog board. Everything inside the eMac looked normal: no bulging, no leaking, no tilting of capacitors, no smells. The hard drives tests OK on the Drive Genius 2 Scan test for bad sectors. I even did a complete archive & install of OS 10.4.11 to eliminate a possibly corrupted video portion of the operating system, with no change in symptoms. Booting into safe mode has no effect on the video problems either.
    I connected an external LCD monitor to the eMac, which gave me a mirror image of the eMac's screen display. However, none of the screen artifacts, flickering or image geometry changes that occur on a cold startup on the eMac's screen happen on the external monitor's screen. To me, that pretty much clears the logic board, which has the video chip and circuitry on it, of having a problem. That means the problem lies within what Apple calls the Display/Analog Assembly. This comprises the cathode ray picture tube, the video card on the neck, the analog/power supply board and the flyback transformer, plus some other little bits and pieces and cables. Apple's method of repairing any of these components is to replace the entire assembly, which costs 2-4 times what a complete, working, trouble-free eMac is worth on the market ($125-$150).
    The strange thing is that, once it's fully warmed up and has run a while, it sometimes is absolutely stable, with no flickering/jittering or other problems. The screen geometry even stabilizes and stops shrinking/growing/blooming while it's awake. It then is possible to adjust the image size and make other screen geometry changes in System Preferences and have them remain unchanged. There is a slight bit of jittering/image size changing when it awakes from sleep, but it doesn't last more than 15 seconds.
    My take on the eMac is that there is at least one capacitor or other on-board electronic component in the Display/Analog Assembly that has aged to the point where it has lost its ability to operate within its original specifications/values when it is cold (room temperature). But as the component or components warm up, the flickering, etc. are visual evidence of the values changing. Finally, after as long as an hour, when everything has reached its maximum temperature and has stabilized, the eMac sometimes performs quite normally. At most other times, it continues to jitter slightly and the vertical screen image blooms and shrinks slowly. The Dock and Menu Bar get pushed just out of sight, then slowly shrink to about a quarter-inch inside the image mask. The really odd thing is that the horizontal geometry appears to always be stable.
    This could be caused by one tiny component, or it could be an early warning of a flyback transformer problem. It's hard to say. I'm tempted to install a new set of capacitors on the logic board, but I'm not sure that's where the problem lies.
    I've Googled and mined the Apple knowledge base, but I've not found any similar problems, helpful insights or fixes. Help, please!
    -- Jim Scott
    Eureka, CA (no, our 6.5 earthquake last Saturday is not the cause of the eMac's problems)

    Hello Jim,
    There is one Mac service place that does a repair of faulty eMac capacitors rather than replace the logic board. Seems to be a solid fix, and much less than a new logic board. The good news is that, as you are in Eureka, they are not painfully far away.
    http://www.synaptech.com/catalog/
    They are in Eugene OR.
    One of the techs there is also a Level 4 member here and really knows eMacs, so he told me about the service. I recommend calling them and asking about the repair service--that particular service is not listed on their web page.
    The tech says that, due to costs of shipping a 50-pound computer across country costs so much, Synaptech often recommends the owner get the logic board out and send only it. However, with the firm in the next state, your shipping may not be as onerous. That would save your getting inside one of the less DYI-appropriate Macs.
