HELP !! My external hard drive is corrupted with all my files !!!!!

So my Seagate Hard drive has been working fine for 1 year, and now when i plugged it in it does not show up on the desktop !
I go into Disk Utility, on the sidebar, instead of the name I set, my disk is now called "disk2s1". I tried to verify it, and it says:
Verifying volume “disk2s1”
Checking file system** /dev/disk2s1
** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
Unable to read directory (Input/output error)
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
So i tried to repair it
Verify and Repair volume “disk2s1”
Checking file system** /dev/disk2s1
** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
Unable to read directory (Input/output error)
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Please please help me ! I dont want to lose all my movies that I havent even watched. I can buy a brandnew hard drive to copy all my files in but the folder dont even show up on the desktop ! I tried to "mount" it but it doesnt work neither.

Some say "Disk Warrior" can recover corrupted file systems.  The cost ($70, I think) and extreme measures it uses makes it a "last ditch" tool instead of a "regular miantenance" tool.

  • What brand external hard drive is best with time machine

what brand of external hard drive works best with time machine?

Contrary to the other two replies, I will relate what I've read here: WD drives are fine, but their (cheap?) enclosures are subject to failure. Some buy a bare WD drive and install it in an Oxford Chip external enclosure (OWC / macsales.com would be one source). And, I have two LaCie Quadras and one OWC Mercury Pro - both are generally recommended here. If you want it bootable, most WD drives do not support it:

Please note: it's good to have an external hard drive which has its own power supply and, as mentioned, FW 800 or USB 3). You also do not need any software that comes on the external - you will most likely need to format it anyway because most come formatted for Windows, but that is easy using Disk Utility.

  • Best speed External Hard Drive to use with Final Cut Pro X ?

    Hey all
I'm looking at getting a new USB 2.0 external hard drive to use with FCPX, I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on minimum speeds and what everyone else uses.
I am looking at least 1-2TB.

I will warn you now that I am somewhat of a lone voice on these forums for recommending USB 2.0s.
I have used the 7,200rpm types with their own mains supply over the last 6 years (and exclusively for the last 3) and had no problems of any kind.
Having said that I am not a pro with tight schedules (or underwear!) but I have used DV, HDV, AVCHD with and without ProRes and AIC.
Most of my projects are short though I have done a number of 2 hour projects with comparatively simple editing and a few effects etc. One ongoing project has some 12 hours of DV which I dip into  occasionally.
I have a couple of LaCie FW HDs which I stopped using a couple of years ago in favour of the much cheaper USB 2.0s and didn't notice any difference, though as I said I don't have pro time constraints.
Now is not the best time to buy HDs cheaply as the autumn floods in Asia knocked out many of the main suppliers, prices doubled overnight and have still not got back to last summers figures (2TB WD Essential £69 with free delivery).
    Look at the price now!

  • What is a good external hard drive for use with a macbook air?

I am looking at purchasing a macbook air 13". What is a good external hard drive to use with it? Should I look for an external hard drive with its own a/c power or is the usb 3.0 capable of powering the external drive.

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

WD My Book Essential 3.0 WDBACW0020HBK.  What is a good external hard drive to use with Mountain Lion?

As Shootist007 said, go to /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.  Select the drive you want to reformat in the Disk Utility Sidebar and make sure it say's Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If so, simply hit the Erase button. Once that's done go back to Time Machine and reselect it if needed.
If you continue to have problems with the drive, I've always used OWC drives with few issues.  Others use Lacie drives.

  • Will using an external hard drive cause me to have duplicate files on my itunes library?

I put all my ITUNES MEDIA folder on my external hard drive from my older computer.. I recently bought a new computer and installed Itunes. I synced some of my Itunes purchased songs back on by using my Ipod.. however the songs I ripped from my cds are still not reinstalled in my library.. I will have to use my external hard drive or re rip those.. and there are a lot of them.. since I have already replaced some of the ones I purchased back on using my Ipod will it duplicate them if I use the prefrences method and return them all from my external hard drive? If i delete my files that I have already returned on my new computer before using my external will Itunes remember which are Itunes purchased music and which arent as well>??? also how exactly do you move music from an external? just plug it in and click the prefrences box about syncing files and keeping Itunes library organized?? any other thing to click?

An iTunes library consists of both the media and the database that knows which files are in the library and hold details of ratings, playcounts, playlist membership and other details not stored in each file's metadata.
Depending on how you have moved content to your external drive you may find you are only moved the media, but not the database. If you import this media into a new library it will work, but your library will be seen as "new" with respect to any devices that you have and iTunes will want to erase and reload them, losing you current selections, settings and data on the device.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable. Alternatively you could copy over the iTunes folder and make sure your external drive has the same drive letter on the new system as the old, however moving the library into a portable form will make every subsequent move that much easier.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

Yes, it can. Launch iTunes with the Option key held down and navigate to that instance of the library.

  • Itunes backed up on external hard drive now corrupt

My 2000+ songs were backed up on an external hard drive. It suddenly gave me a corrupt error message. Ran the check disk. It advised me that I needed to /fix to correct problem, but it wouldn't accept that command. Went to Geek Squad & they tell me drive is empty, but for a fee they can send it off for more extensive recovery. For whatever reason, some of my iTunes files are also on my 13-year-old Windows drive, but not all. It's random music, too. Some recently purchased, some not. Trying to explain this to an Apple person has proven to be difficult. I had already tried all the "tricks" they have suggested.
Half of my library is "purchased" music, but trying to retrieve them from the iTunes Store is not happening. It still thinks they are downloaded. The songs that get the exclamation points then clear when I exit iTunes & then restart it. Then when I try to play them I get the exclamation point.
    Any other advice?
    Thanks!

I honestly thought they were backed up, along with a few hundred pictures. I actually went in and manually did a back-up a couple of months ago, because it didn't appear that it was following the schedule & auto-backing up. I'm just a 55 y/o, non-computer-literate mom, who now has adult children & am doing this computer thing on my own!! My computer is really old. Bought it when Windows ME came out!! HA! Saving for a new one, but our daughter's wedding this summer got in the way.
I thought about the delete-thing. Wasn't sure if that would work. Going to try (test) that now.
Thanks for your quick response & help.

  • How do i use an external hard drive in conjunction with my itunes account?

I'm having so much trouble locating music from my itunes account that i previously transferred onto an external hard drive.  I regularly get messages with each sync i try to do telling me that songs could not be located.  Also when i try to play certain songs they have a circled in front of them which prevents me from playing them even on my computer.  I've tried everything in my knowledge to rectify this problem but i just cannot find a solution. Please help.

    Hello ryanbenson,
With this issue its best to start from scrach.
-Create a folder on your external, call it itunes music.
-Find all of your music on your computer and cut and paste it all into that folder.
-In itunes click music under library on the left and delete all of your music.
From here you want to add everything back into itunes from the itunes music folder on your external.
-At the top of itunes click edit, prefrences, then advanced.
-Make sure keep itunes folder organized is checked.
-Make sure copy files when adding to library is un checked.
-At the top it shows iTunes media folder location, to the right of that you can change the location to the external hard drive, to the itunes music folder.  You will have to keep the external connected to play songs in itunes and sync but this is how my itunes is set up.
-Click ok on the bottom right of the prefrences window
    After all that,
-Click file at the top, then add FOLDER to library
-Navigate to your external and click the folder that has all the music.
-Click ok or add folder or choose folder
From here all music will start importing back into the library. iTunes will stay organized. You will be able to sync and play your music again.
    Hope this helps.

  • External hard drive stops working with AP Extreme after Time machine touches it

    *sigh*
    Ok.
I had a 1.5TB external HD connected to my Airport Extreme (henceforth to be known as APE) working fine, albeit with unexpected slow transfer speeds....not the point. Moving along.
Updated to 7.6.1 firmware. Ugh. I wish apple would have their standard idiot mode plus an advanced option.
    Getting to the point.
I decide that im going to try Time Machine but there is no way that im going to try doing the inital backup over wireless. I disconnect the external hard drive from the APE and connect to my computer start the backup and decide encryption is a good idea. Turns out, bad idea as it puts some kind of encryption on the whole volume not just an image which i assumed it would do. I  decide that this time machine idea is stupid and wonder why the **** its trying to backup 130GB of data after i excluded a lot of data. Anyway. I remove the time machine data, do into disk utility and remove the encryption and plug it back up the the APE.
No dice. The drive will not load at all on the APE and i believe it has something to do with some funky timemachine encryption voodoo. I want to avoid formatting this drive.
    So.
    Help?

I reformatted and its now working.
