Help! My fan is not spinning!

recently I've just posted about hard spinning fan
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2358805&tstart=0
but today, it's not spinning at all (at least around 800 rpm)
yesterday, I booted to Windows 7 to play starcraft 2 (with high graphics settings)
I clearly can hear the sound of the fan + heat
then, when I booted back to Mac OS X, it's total silence. and the rpm is 0

Run the hardware tests from you original install DVD (by holding d at Boot) and see if it reports any MTR (fan motor) or SNS (temperature sensor) errors, if so contact Apple about a repair.

  • Satellite A100-773 - cooling fans are not spinning

    Hello,
My notebook fans are not spinning at all,
I installed speed fan and it does not even recognize the fans, the temperatures are 60-70 degrees, but when I stressed the laptop to 80 degrees the "emergency" fan start very low until it went down from 80.
Does it have to be hardware problem or because the fan did actually work it might be software issue? Can someone guide me where to look?
    Thx in advanced
    Yoni

You should definitely check the options in the Toshiba power saver (if preinstalled and available on you notebook).
But to be honest I dont see any serious problems with your notebook.
If your notebook doesnt overheat then the fans work fine.
With overheating I mean a suddenly shut downs. In such case the notebook would shut down to prevent the hardware from damage.
But it looks like your notebook runs ok However, you could check if an BIOS update (if available) would increase the fans performance and sensibility.
    Bye

  • Lenovo G770 Fan not spinning up after resume from sleep or hibernate

    Hi guys,
My lenovo G770 is facing an issue where when ever I resume the system from either sleep mode or hibernate, the fan does not spin up, as a result I have to either restart the system or open the system, pull the wire of the fan and put it back in the power socket.
Lets make 2015 the year of the #DO
Did I or someone help you today? Press the star on the left to thank them with a Kudo!
    Solved!

    Hey Abdul,
Welcome back.   If the fan runs normally on first boot until you suspend / resume, then I might imagine this is power management quirk, or something confused in the embedded controller.
    1) Try going into BIOS and reload defaults - this might refresh values there.
    2) Try uninstall / reinstall power management driver and the energy cut software (Idea power manager).
Did you recently update BIOS or drivers?
I would also try some temp monitoring software just to see how CPU temps run after you come back from sleep to see if the fan should be running.

  • GTX 760 one fan occasionally stuck (not spinning)

    Hello everyone.
Has anyone encountered this problem that I'm having with my only 2 month old MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr Gaming OC Edition card?
When I start up my PC, only one of the two fans will start to spin, first at normal speed but then it will soon accelerate to full speed. I guess that the card detects that one fan is not spinning so it will automatically accelerate the other to full speed for heat protection. When looking, I can actually see the not spinning fan blades do very small movement (1-2 mm) back and forth, like it's trying to spin, so there is power at least. Powering off the PC and restarting multiple times will not help at this point.
The weird thing is that if I lightly nudge the blades the fan will then start to spin and work normally again for maybe a week (5-15 PC start-ups on average), before the problem re-appears again.
The problematic fan is spinning freely if I take out the card and spin the fan blades manually, there is no more resistance than in the normally working fan. So it's not a case of broken bearings or dust in them, or any kind of physical obstruction.
It's a pain in the ass, to get the fan spinning again I always have to open my case to physically touch the fan blades. And that workaround only helps for maybe a week. I didn't plan on having to open my PC case every week when I bought this card.
I have updated drivers several times, and can't really believe this could be a software issue. The card is is only 2 months old, and was working perfectly for the 1st month.
I'll soon send the card to warranty repairs through my retailer, unless somebody can suggest a software side fix for this problem.

    Thanks for your reply.
I'm not able to save the vbios, when I try it with GPU-Z, my PC freezes completely.
    The card is N760 TF 2GD/OC, S/N 602-V284-300B1409112019.
GPU-Z says BIOS version is 80.04.C4.00.2F (P2004-0010), MSI Live Update 6 gives Graphics card BIOS version as NV284MH.350 and does not offer any update.
Are you able to check with that information if there is a newer vbios available?
Would attempting to update the vbios void the warranty of the card?

  • Mac Pro PSU fan not spinning...

    System: Mac Pro (early 2009)
After a while the system shuts itself down, and then repeatedly does so while trying to boot back up. After letting it sit a couple of hours, it boots back up, but again starts shutting itself down.
I opened it up and noticed the PSU fan was not spinning - which eventually caused the PSU to overheat and power off.
I ran a hardware test, and got the following error...
    4MOT/1/40000002: PS-0
I searched on the Internet for this error, and it seems (I assume) that this error means the PSU fan is bad, but I plugged it into another fan port on the motherboard and it worked fine. I then, plugged one of the other fans into the PSU Fan port and it did not work.
    I reset the SMC.
I reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard)
I loaded "Fan Control" software (PSU Fan stays at 0 RPM and cannot be manually adjusted.)
At this point I'm guessing it's either the power supply itself (which I find hard to believe), or the PWM controller for the PSU Fan is not working. To get around the issue, I'm ordering a "simple" (2 wire for power only) fan to replace the built-in fan and a manual (knob) speed controller. (Total of $10, until the real issue can be determined.)
If anyone could help any further, I'd appreciate it.

Wanted to add reason I didn't think it is the PSU...

Most of the fans in the cabinet are under control of the SMC software. They do indeed run full speed with no software intervention, as a fail-safe mechanism. (Software crashes, fans roar at top speed.)
A program like "SMC fan control" can provide visibility to the temperatures, and SOME control of the base fan speeds. My recollection is that the PSU fans 'do their own thing' (unlike the main cabinet fans) and are not software controllable. Components inside the power supply determine the temperatures and adjust its own fan speeds.
If that is the case, when used in combination with your analysis above, you should be able to trace back to an output amplifier (intended to modulate fan speed) that is DEAD and stuck at an output that is telling the fan not to spin. I would hope a 29 cent component was responsible.
A short in the backplane seems exceedingly unlikely. Most of what the power supply does is directly onto its discrete wiring harness. The main DC harness to the motherboard uses high-current connectors. Using more than one of those for signaling or fan speed seems more wasteful than power supply designers could tolerate.

  • Fan not spinning up/no module for ACPI PM

    I'm a little confused here.
First off, this is a laptop (an old Toshiba) with a Celeron-M (420?).  It can't run too long before shutting down because it gets too hot because the fan will not spin up.  The actual fan is fine, as it runs properly on windows.
I looked around when I was trying to get ACPI up and running for power management(it couldn't find a proper module to use) and found this:
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33104
    Do I need this?
I did try installing it yesterday (with the working pkgbuild in the most recent comment) and while building the kernel, it "spammed" warnings all over and I didn't bother using it.  I didn't change anything in the kernel config menu.

Toshibas for whatever reason are not friendly to Linux. I'm running one with "acpi=ht" in the grub boot line (results in "select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out" error for both cores, but does not with acpi=off). There are no ACPI functions (nothing in /sys whatsoever) but the fan does speed up and down at times (unlike with acpi=off, where it always runs at default speed) (temperature from the only hardware monitor found hangs around 64 degrees celsius, usually),
    [skyalmian@alcyone ~]$ sensors
    k10temp-pci-00c3
    Adapter: PCI adapter
    temp1: +63.0°C (high = +70.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
and no power management to speak of, including battery -- it's all unrecognized by the system, even with installed packages. Meh, I'm fine with it, though. It just means that without knowing the status of the battery I keep mental track of how long the system is on when not plugged in. This Toshiba L505D-S5983 had a poor battery rating on Windows @ only 2 hours max doing generic things, so I round down to just one hour. I was using it one day without it plugged in and it just shut off when the battery went empty.

  • X240 Fan Not Spinning Until Very Hot

I have an X240 and notice that the fan only starts to spin when the laptop gets VERY hot.  There seems to be no in between, either the fan is not spinning at all or it's going as fast as I can.  Are there any tools that I can use to troubleshoot this?

Try resetting your SMC and PRAM.

I also have a 3000 N200 running Windows 7. In the last month it started overheating and shutting down. I don't feel any air moving, so i don't think the fan is running. In case it's related, the Nvidia driver crashes fairly regularly (some other sites thought it might be related.)

  • Msi GTX680 Lightning - Fans *not* spinning backwards at startup.

Hi guys, just got this card. It looks great + the board design seems very good indeed.
Problem I'm having is that the fans aren't spinning backwards when the computer starts. One of the reasons why I went for this card was that I thought this sounded like a great feature for stopping dust buildup - Which I hate.
My rig is pretty old, and the motherboard is an nVidia 680iSE (PCIe 1.1 I *think*):
    QX6700 Extreme @ 2.6GHz (cooled with Zalman 9700)
    680iSLI motherboard
    4GB Corsair Dominator RAM
    AX860 860W Corsair Platinum PSU
    Silverstone TJ07 case
    5 HDDs
    30 inch Apple Cinema Display
PSU is brand new, the rest, bar some HDDs is from 2006... Planning on upgrading to the following in the not too distant future, which should hopefully be a better match for this GPU:
    CPU: i73930K
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 *2011* Dual Radiator CPU Cooler
    Motherboard: Asus P9X79 Pro
RAM: 32GB Corsair, 8GB DIMMs, quad channel.
If any one can help with this fan issue I'd really appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    Robert
(also, should I be seeing a large improvement over my previous GTX 480, or will the improvement be minor due to the other parts of the system being old?)

    Hi guys, thanks for replying.
I've barely had the chance to test the card yet, but so far it seems very good indeed - There is nothing 'wrong' with it at all that would require a vid to demonstrate (it starts up just like a 'normal' video card).
The only thing I'm talking about is the automatic 'msi dust removal tech' as mentioned in reviews and on the box, also here (albeit for the GTX580): http://event.msi.com/vga/msifantechnology/page3.html - As I said I really liked the sound of this feature as I tend to hold onto my components for a long time and thus longevity is important to me. Seems like some people would rather have a quiet start and thus msi patched it out with a vbios update, however personally I'd rather have 30 seconds of noise and a better performing/longer lasting unit.
So yes, what flobelix is talking about is what I was asking: an older vbios would re-enable the 'msi Dust Removal Tech,' but unfortunately it sounds like I'd lose other updates. I was hoping the only update was the removal of this feature in which case I could just use the previous vbios. Would you agree that it's best to just stick with the latest vbois? What other updates would I be missing out on and what is GOP support?
Thanks a lot for the info/help, much appreciated.

  • Macbook Pro Late 2011 13 Inch Fan Not Spinning?

Hello. I have had my macbook pro (13 inch late 2011) since January of 2012. It has worked great, until now. It has been getting very hot and iStat Pro says that I'm running CPU at 191 idle. Also, the exhaust fan, also the only fan, is at 0 RPM. Can anyone help me out and tell me why my fan won't spin?

We're not Apple, just end-users like you. You'll need to get a quote from an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
The fan would be the cheapest fix I believe. This site shows not too complicated steps to access to replace a fan in your model:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Late+2011+Fan /7654/1
The site makes no mention however of replacing a sensor.

    hi,
i moved my g5 the other day, and i noticed the fans at the back are not spinning. i think they're the exhaust fans. i looked in hardware monitor and ot says they are. but i can see they're not.
    anyone have any ideas?

sorry, just being a ****! realized that those blade looking things aren't the fans. and the fans are spinning.
    sorry!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Ti4200-VTD8x Fan not spinning

    Hi,
I just discovered today that the fan on the Ti4200 I got 9 months ago is not spinning anymore and the card is getting quite hot. I tried cleaning it with an can of compressed air but it didn't change anything. Usually when the PC boots up it'll spin for 1 or 2 turns and then stop. Is there I can do to fix it? I tough about putting some WD40 in it but I'm not sure it is a good idea... if this is not a good idea what should idea is there somewhere I can take it for repairs? (I live in montreal (Quebec/Canada))
    Thanks a lot
    Dalaran

    Dalaran,
You can RMA the card back to MSI so that they can fix it or you could go with an after market VGA Cooler.
    Take Care,
    Richard
