Help!! my g4 is dying.......

the most bizarre thing happened this morning.
got home from apple store last night with a brand new end of line xeon octocore mac pro. went to bed. got up this morning and started using my aging g4 867mhz single processor on the internet and it suddenly made a slight "pop" noise and both monitors turned off. the power light and fans stayed on, but the restart button didnt work so i powered down by holding in the power button.
restarted. no "on" noise, but fans spun up and power light came on. monitors display "no signal" message. immediately i thought my graphics card (an ati radeon dual monitor card) had died....it has been acting up for a while now (sometimes when i boot up there will be vertical stripes down the screen and strange pixels around the cursor. a reboot/ several reboots usually sort it out.
however, i tried logging into the mac from my networked mac mini downstairs with no luck. does this mean it's something more serious?
the main system hard drive was replaced a couple of years ago, and has shown no suspicious behaviour. tried disconnecting all preipherals (except mouse and keyboard) with no joy.
i need to get some stuff off this mac, and would ideally like to get it up & running again in case i want to transfer old tunes from cubase 5.1/ halion sampler/ various third party pluginsd/os9 into logic studio...by bouncing down the parts as audio)
am thinking of doing the following later:
disconnect mouse/ keyboard & restart
try to boot from original cd
reseat agp
reseat memory
check for light on motherboard - is there one on a g4?
reset button on motherboard - any ideas where it is anyone?
replace clock battery?
remove hard drives and put in external usb enclosures, then connect them to another machine.
anything i've missed?
does this problem ring any bells with anyone?
power light on, fans on, no response from keyboard (eg: eject cd), no response from restart button.
was looking forward to messing with my new mac, but now i'm going to be cursing this one instead!

Hi-
The poor ol' QS just didn't want to let you down, and has been struggling on to please you.
After "sensing" the replacements arrival, the machine knew that the chance to pass on had come.......
OK, disconnect everything but one monitor, the keyboard and mouse before going any further.
Try a boot. If a no go, try the monitor in the other graphics port.
If that doesn't work, repeat with the other monitor.
The next step would be trying to boot to the OS Install disc.
If still a no go, try the PMU reset.
From there, if still no boot, reseat everything, repeat the above steps.
remove hard drives and put in external usb enclosures, then connect them to another machine.
Could try a Firewire Target Disk Mode transfer. But, that assumes some amount of video, and the ability to boot.
was looking forward to messing with my new mac, but now i'm going to be cursing this one instead!
Now, now... Be nice to the old friend that served you so well!

Just had an employee terminated most acrimoniously and had an iPhone 5C that was a brick. Apple support can help remove the lock. Better hold onto your original receipt and record the Serial# !  I do not mean the MEID or IMEI but the Serial# found on the original box or Settings>General>About. In my case no receipt or Serial#.  2 hours on the phone between Apple and Verizon and got what was needed. Submitted form and got reply to allow 2-10 business days.

  • Help!  My computer died... is my library gone!

Our computer died Monday. We were not able to recover anything from our hard drive. When I downloaded Itunes on to our new computer, my library was empty. All of my music is loaded onto my Ipod nano (newest generation) If I hook up my Ipod to my new computer, can I get my music back? I'm afraid to hook it up b/c I don't know what will happen since my library is now empty. Can someone please help? Thanks!!

Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod.
The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • _ (Help, my iBook is dying)

    <html>
    <title>
    Help
    </title>
    <body>
I think my iBook contracted an STD after playing with his buddy, the iMac G5.
(N.B. the iMac is not relevant to the problem, just like the <html> codes[I'm bored!?])
But anyways, my iBook is a 1.33 14 inch. I got it in December 2004 (X-Mas) I use it every single day of my life! But now my battery is dying, it dies at a rate of 1% per minute ± Therefore MAX operating time is ±1.4 Hours. I do not turn off my iBook ever, I sleep it.
But anyways in XRG (X Resource Graph) my current is given as about 1400 mAh. Less then half from december last year (2900). My iBook is no longer under warranty and I have no money for a new battery. I'm wondering if anyone else has dead battery issues?
If so can anyone help me get over my iBook's Terminal illness?
    </body>
    </html>

Why! My poor iBook's life has been shortened by so long. It's still a young computer. Better save up for a new battery for X-mas. By then I'll probably get a new one for the same price!
Why Are iBook batteries quoted to last so long? Are people expected to only use their batteries for a month then replace them? I just think that the rate of deterioration is far to great! Just say, If I had applecare, which I don't, would I get a new battery or replacement of some type?

  • Help! Phone just died

Hope someone can help! My phone has just died. I had this morning and using it fine and then just died, my sign of life, charger makes no difference. It was just in my bag, nothing spilt on it, not dropped, nothing! Literally just died... Help!

  • Help, the hard drive died

    Help, hardisk died. 2 questions:
    1. Easy to replace the hard drive?
    2. The main issue is that I cannot see Order Number, EMC Number, Model Identifier, Serial Number, Intel processor number or any identification needed to buy a new hard drive, except the Model Number (which is A1278). The laptop was purchased in 2008 or 2009. The processor is 1066MHz. The hard drive (made by Fujitsu) has a serial number, model number and part number documented on the drive. How to identify a new hard drive?

I found the original box, which says that:
    Part No. MB466ZH/A
    Serial No. W884990F1AQ
So looks like this is my MacBook:
However, there are so many hard drives that I am confused. How to ensure I get the right one?
Would these work? How do I know if they would work?

Does it make any sense to replace the hard drive for a laptop whioch is 6 yrs old?

  • Help Help! Screen just died (pics attached)

I have a 20' iMac G5 that I got about 3 years ago. When I went back to my computer after dinner tonight, the screen looked like this (look at links for pics). I had used the computer 2 hours beforehand and the screen was working fine. I have never dropped it or anything; it has basically been sitting in the same spot for 3 years and hasn't received any damage. What is going on? I looked all over this board for anything related to my problem and couldn't find anything. I tested around with this dying screen and found out that I can still log on and I can hear the sounds when i change the volume. So I'm thinking just the screen is crazy. I really need this computer seeing as it has all my work and all my music (very very important). What is going on with my screen? Is there any way to fix it? If it is impossible to fix, how can I get my music and other things onto an external hard drive?

Sorry to say this, but it looks like your LCD panel went bad. If you have AppleCare that is still in effect, submit a report to AppleCare right away.
Also do this - Shut down your iMac. Connect an external display. Restart your iMac. If the external display works, then there is a problem with either the LCD panel or the Inverter in your iMac.
Assuming the external display works, you can use it to run your iMac while you back up your music & other data. Or just keep using the external display. Replacing the LCD panel is not cheap.

  • Help! My Monitor died!

I apparantly need to replace the monitor for my G4 and can't figure out what will work on it. My husband seems to think that since the original was a VGA, that it needs to be replaced by another VGA. Is it possible that a TFT monitor would work (or whatever you call a flat panel display). Are there any other options available?
We took the original one to the Apple store to be checked out and they couldn't get it to work, so I think it's probably a lost cause. I figure a replacement is necessary, but I don't want to have to put a lot of money into a new one.
    G4 Graphics, G4ibook   Mac OS 9.0.x

What model Mac do you have? You say you have a VGA port, so your Mac is probably not an MDD or FW800 model. If you are not sure, check here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418
Or you can type in your serial number on the main Apple Support page, where it says "About your Apple product".
If you have a VGA port then you can surely use any VGA monitor. Is that the only port you have for video? If so, it may be possible to use a DVI or ADC flat panel monitor with an adapter such as this.

  • HELP! eMac Keeps Dying

I have had my daughter's eMac in repair three times now and am my wit's end. Every time I turn it on, it works for a while, and then when I cold boot, the power button will not turn the computer back on. And then we go back to the Apple store again for repairs. What in the heck is happening? I have never ever had these problems with other computers. Any ideas???

    John Brasher,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
What's been repaired or replaced? What repairs did the repair shop report on the three occasions they've had it? Have they replaced the power switch itself? (The pins on the wire connecting the button to the motherboard are reported easy to bend.)
You may want to check the Apple: Find Service website and check if there are alternate service providers in your area.

Well, My iPod had sopme dead pixels, but now the dead pixels are moving!!!!
    how can I repair it?
can I send the iPod to USA to fix it, or change the screen?

I would try a disk mode restore and if the issue persists after that I would send it in for service as a scroll/click wheel issue.

  • Help. Airport Driver Dying?

I'm having the exact problem described here: http://www.omnigroup.com/mailman/archive/macosx-admin/2004-May/046689.html
Basically, sometimes when transferring a lot of information (it manifests itself especially when I'm playing online games, but not exclusively) my computer stutters for a moment, probably outputting a lot of information to the syslog, and my AirPort connection dies. Signal Bars are still visible on the menubar, and the network panel thinks it's connected to the internet. However, it seems no packets are actually being transmitted or received. Furthermore, clicking the airport status in the menu bar shows only the current airport network where there used to be many before. If I disconnect from the current network and then click the airport status, it will show NO networks. It's not an issue with the network; other computers which use the network including my old G4 TiBook work fine while this is happening.
Turning the airport off and on from the menu or the network system preference does not resolve the problem. Unloading and reloading the kext doesn't seem to resolve the problem. Playing with ifconfig doesn't seem to solve it. Restarting the computer, however, solves it every time.
This seems to be the same behavior that the poster on the omnigroup forums is describing 3 years ago. Has there been a solution since then?

  • Help!!! Computer died and soon will be the owner....

    Help!! Help!!
    System died and need help..
System used to work seamlessly but 2 days back something happened. When working on the pc half way through, system resets itself (like someone pressed the reset button). Quite often, thought was virus attack.. update my norton and scanned throughly --> No Virus Detected. Panic sets in and check bios... nothing was changed as b4..
Doomsday --- still trying to find the fault and all the sudden blackout.. System resets but constant in black screen ,cd-rom drive blinks as normal, cooler fan running, but harddisk no motion at all. D bracket shows memory error(ram?). Tried removing all PCI cards and cables to cdrom and floppy, remaining only motherboard( K7T266 Pro2 ), CPU ( athlon xp 1600+ ), video card ( nvidea 64 mb ) and 256mb DDR ram.
Pray it will work.. but it didn't.... D Bracket still shows same fault, removed ram and try booting up still same problem and shows same fault..
Can anyone out there help with advise?? Really appreciate.. Cos going crazy without my computer.. Thanks Thanks!!!
     ;( [size=15]

I did... all the 3 slots gave me the same response..
Shouldn't be my power supply for it been working for 1 year plus already... now guess my concern would be the ram, motherboard and harddisk...

  • Help! I'm running out of options

I was having a lot of problems with my phone last week so on Saturday I decided to Factory Reset it. It seemed to help with the battery dieing so quickly. However when I did go to charge the phone all 3 of the chargers i had for the phone did not work. If i shoved the charger in real hard and held it at a certain angle i could get it to charge long enough to turn on and then my fingers would start to hurt from holding it in so hard and at an awkward handle. After dealing with that for a few hours I decided to just call Verizon. What a wonderful experience. I have no complaints as to how that phone call went. They we going to send me a new phone over night and with Christmas being tuesday i figured i wouldn't recieve it until wednesday.
I finally recieved my new phone wednesday night. Upon recieveing the phone i took everything out of the old phone ( memory car, sim card, battery, back) and put in in the new phone. I plugged in the new phone and expected it to start charging!...
it didn't... well it did but for about 2 seconds until i slightly nudged the phone and it stopped charging. SO me thinking then I had broken the chargers jamming them into the other phone i went out to a verizon store and purchased a new charger. YAY!
I got home plugged in the charger and........ nothing.   if i plug it in and don't move it at all then i may get a tiny charge but then that error message of critically low battery will begin to flash on and off the screen because the battery decided it wasnt to charge and uncharge.
I'm unsure at this point as to what to do. I have a new phone and a new charger and it still will not charge?!?!??!
do i call then again? do i go to the store? help?!?! what do i do

First, buy a new battery.  To me it sounds like your battery has failed because it will not charge and it also sounds like if you can get it to charge a little bit it goes "dead" very quickly.
One way to test if it's the battery is to go to a Verizon store and ask if you can temporary move the battery from a test phone to yours just to see if that fixes your phone.
By the way, take your charger and USB cable to see if you can charge the test battery.
