Help! My Imac has a very wierd screen problem!

Hey all Mac users.
I really hope that someone here can help me. A few minutes ago my screen went totally bananas! I was using photoshop when it happened. It didn't seem that my programs were affected, just my screen. I could see my mouse and move it on the screen.
This is the first time a thing like this has happened. I manually turned off the computer to restart it.
Here's a picture of what it looked like:
A friend told me that i should get a hardware/memory test but i think you need a cd for that or something? I am so bad at these computer problems..
I really hope that someone can tell me what's going on with my mac. I really don't hope that it will happen again!

Yes there is a hardware test you can run. Quite possibly it's still on the hard drive's hidden partition if you don't have the disks. More information about that here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1883
So what happened after you restarted the computer? Does - or did - the problem only occur while running Photoshop? If it has only happened once I'd wait and see if it does it again. It may have been just a one time glitch.

    scottxx,
That was very nice of you to provide your friend with a new phone! I am sorry to say that the device will not be able to activate while in Dubai. For a device to activate it must connect to the VZW network to become active. I apologize for any inconvenience.

  • Hello to all: My iMac has developed a video display problem. It displays everything in cartoon like colors - purple, green, blue. Can this be repaired? Is there a way to output to a different monitor? Thanks in advance!  isplays

    Hello -
My iMac has developed a video display problem. Everything now appears in a strange, cartoonish way. Purples, greens, blues. Can this be fixed, and if so, any idea how much it might cost? Also, could I output to a seperate monitor? I plan to replace the unit , but cannot right now. Thanks!

Go to System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing.
In the Display area, reset it to "Black on white" by clicking that checkbox.
You can also reset it by pressing Command-Option-Control-8

  • Help? iMac has no access to files. Only grey Screen. Boots up to Browser.

I need help! My iMac either has been attacked by Virus or Worm. I can boot up to a Firefox Browser but that is all. The iMac has no files accessable and the Desktop is just a grey screen. I tried inserting the Mountain Lion Disk but could not access it, and it can not be ejected. No external Disk is accessable.
I don't know what to do?

If you're running Mountain Lion (there isn't normally a separate install/restore disk unless you specifically made one from the downloaded installer file, so not sure what disk you put in the drive) try booting into the Recovery HD, select Disk Utility, click on Macintosh HD and select 'repair disk'. If any changes are made click on repair disk again until you get a clear pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
Restart holding Command=r to boot in the Recovery. More info here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
To eject the disk try restarting holding down the mouse button until the disk is ejected. Other possibilities for ejecting a stuck disk here (although you obviously need a working machine to be able to try them):

  • My iMac has a Kernel Panic screen come up on start up and I can't get past it no matter what I try. Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

My mac has a "Kernel Panic" screen come up on start up. No matter what I try I can't get past this to fix it. Any hints out there? Do I have to completely wipe my drive and re-install to fix this? I can't even back up my files before doing this as like I say I can't get past the Kernel Panic message.

There are some fairly informative articles about kernel panics...
    •OS X: About kernel panics:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Note the toggle triangles to get more info in the above article, some are
important steps, with alternative methods of accessing or performing a
suggested activity and may vary with the OS X version in use.
    •Resolving Kernel Panics:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
•Technical Note: TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics:
    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/technotes/tn2063/_index.html
The above TN covers several technical aspects to identify & troubleshoot.
Some are above the average user needs, but still can be rather helpful.
Hopefully you can get past the kernel panic screen, there are several
ways to attempt to do that, however if the issue is hardware, a reinstall
of the OS X may not cure the underlying cause of the symptom.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Whilst using photoshop my iMac has become very hot is this normal

Whilst using photoshop on my iMac it has become very hot is this normal

What iMac model do you have and what version of the Mac OS is it running? Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu is a good start. Its first window looks like this:
Note the two lines I've highlighted with the red arrows; post what they display on your computer.
Different iMac models have different heat tolerences and heat management options, so we can better help you if we have those two bits of information

  • IMac has become very slow

    Dear all,
My iMac (purchased in 2010) has become very slow. The response time of programs is slow as well as the start up process. I have upgraded the system to OS Mountain Lion when it was available (I've prechecked my system before wethever it is strong enough, and it was).
I have done OS software updates and as well restarts. But I am facing still the same issue. While surfing with Safari or using Office, the response time is long (the cursor becomes a rainbow-color-circle)....
During the time I have installed Norton by Symantec as a protection... don't know if that has any influence, too...
Any ideas how what the issue might be and how can i solve this?
    Thank you very much.
    Regards,
    Lucien

Remove the Norton/Symantec product by following the instructions on either of these pages:
Uninstalling your Norton product for Mac
    Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh
If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. Back up all data before making any changes.

  • Help: My PowerBookG4 has gotten very slow

All of a sudden my PowerBook G4 has become very slow. I get lots of beachballs while it is thinking what to do. It takes 5 minutes to restart and sometimes 5-10 seconds just to open a folder (with a beachball while I wait). All apps are running slow. I have a 60 GB Hard drive with 6.5 GB free space. I just run repair permissions (nothing needed to be repaired) and I veriified the drive with HD utility and it said it is OK. Here is the info on my system:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 12" Machine Model: PowerBook6,4;CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (1.1); Number Of CPUs: 1; CPU Speed:1.33 GHz; L2 Cache (per CPU):512 KB Memory: 768 MB; Bus Speed:167 MHz.

    Esteban:
Your HDD space is pretty close to the minimum 10%, although I suspect that is not the issue. However, you might benefit from taking a look at Dr. Smoke's FAQ Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk and free up some space before it gets too full and you run into further difficulties.
Your RAM at 512 MB is a bit meager. Your RAM will max out at 1.25 GB. I suggest you boost it to at least 1 GB.
I am not sure what maintenance procedures you do regularly. I suspect that one of the issues is that your computer needs maintenance. Download and launch MacJanitor and run the daily, weekly, monthly tests.
Here are some article on maintenance procedures which have al lot of excellent suggestions and links to resources:
    Macintosh OS X Routine Maintenance
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance

    Good luck.

  • Very wierd flash problem

Hi today i came back to my pc after leaving it to defrag over night, when i went on to youtube earlier it informed me that i didn't have flash installed when i know for a fact i did, so i went into add/remove programs and the flash activex and the plugin were not there! Last night there was Air/Flash ActiveX/Flash Plugin and Reader. The activex and plugin have just uninstalled themselves! When i look in program files there is "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Flash Player\AddIns\airappinstaller\" in that folder there is adobe air installer and a digest.s file, flash player folder is empty except addins folder and that folder is empty except for airappinstaller folder. Also in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash" there is Flash10n.ocx file ActiveX Control. WTH! Now this gets even better. When i go to get.adobe.com/flashplayer and download the file i get "install_flashplayer10_chrd_aih.exe" and it says "Description: Adobe Flash Player Installer, Company: Solid State Networks" When i downloaded the 11 beta i got "flashplayer11_b1_install_win_pi32_071311.exe" Description: Adobe® Flash® Player Installer/Uninstaller 11.0 d1, Company: Adobe Systems Inc.
What the hell is going on here? i uploaded the "solid state networks" file to virustotal none of the scanners flagged it but there is community members who say it is malware. Sorry if i'm going a bit in circles i'm just completely stunned as to what's just happened this has never happened before. I really hope i can get some help on this, thank you very much.
Also the icons for the files are completely different

I have my theory as for how your Flash Player got uninstalled.  Do you have automatic updates (Flash Player) enabled?
It would also be interesting to know the contents of FlashInstall.log in C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash
As already indicated in the other topic, it would be best if you uninstalled the current Flash Player completely using http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html and reinstall the latest version from http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/fp_distribution3.html

  • My iPod 5th gen has a very dark screen, help!

My battery died, so I plugged my iPod in to charge, however, the screen was very dark. I thought the problem might correct itself when it became fully charged, but it stayed the same. Changing the brightness in the settings menu doesn't do anything. I've also tried to reset all the settings on the iPod, but nothing happens. As far as I know, my iPod wasn't damaged in anyway beforehand. Is there anything else I can try?

Have you tried a reset or restore of the device in iTunes to see if that helps?  To reset the device, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, connect the iPod to your iTunes library and click the Restore button from under the iPod's Summary tab.
If the issue still persists, it's likely hardware related. A white screen could be the result of a loose LCD ribbon cable, or a damaged LCD screen.  Either way you'll need to have the iPod serviced in order to gain fully functionality of it again.

  • HELP! iMac G5 hangs at blue screen, but boots in Safe Mode

Please can anyone guide me to recover my iMac G5 PowerMac 8,2 running OS X 10.4.11.
Problem; Mac hangs on start-up at blue screen after grey Apple screen. Mouse pointer eventually appears but that is all.
Actions taken so far without success:
    1.  Disconnected the printer and rebooted - no success.
    2. Booted in Safe Mode - first time the screen was completely scrambled but with safe mode log on screen showing through.
2.1 Rebooted in Safe Mode OK This has not occurred again and I have entered Safe Mode twice more without problems.  But worrying!
2.2  In Safe Mode I ran disk Utility and verified and repaired Permissions, mostly old EpsonPrinter files.
2.3  I also verified the Disk, which was reported OK.
2.4  I was able to save critical documents to USB............  Phew!
2.5  Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    3. Reset PRAM
3.1 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success
    4. Reboot in Safe mode - works fine.  NOTE: time and date appear to be correct and dont need resetting.
4.1 Run Disk Utility again and Verify Permissions - OK.  Nothing needed fixing.
4.2 Run Disk Verify - Passed OK
4.3 Reboot in Normal Mode - no success.  Hangs at blue screen with mouse pointer visible and working.  Then pointer vanishes.
I would be most grateful for your help in moving this forward

Got to figure out which which of the things dropped when you boot in safe mode is causing the problem.

  • 23" imac has pixelated waves across screen then freezes

I think there is soemthing wrong with the display and anyone has experienced this? I googled and can't find anything to do with this. I don't know what to call it-- wave pixelated display problem?
The screen suddenly shows waves onscreen and i can't do anytihng except force it to shut down.
I have 4 gb 800 mhz DDR2 SDRAM. This computer is old, so I am feeling it is a hardware problem. It has happedn 3 times within 3 hours. It started when I tried to go back in Time Machine to retrieve a file. Then, the next forced reboot was the screen above, then the third time was in my husband's log-in.
I would think I have to make an appt with Apple Genius bar tomorrow.

Have you even heard about this issue before and help me find proper terms in order to search? That is what I am asking before I haul this heavy machine to the Apple store. The nearest apple store is less than 3 miles.
I don't have a warranty(long since expired), nor Apple care, etc. This computer is about 4 years old. I don't even know how to describe this in the search to begin with. I did a search on apple's help section and Googling but nothing comes up that matches this issue. You're not helping me by sending me to imac product FAQ.
