Help! My internet is slow on my G4

I have been noticing a severe slowdown on my internet speed on my G4. The computer itself is running just fine for me, but connecting to websites is sloooooooow! Tonight, I could not even watch any videos online because it was taking so long. However, if I go to another computer, everything works fine.
I am on DSL with AT&T, I have run DSL speed checks and I am getting a good signal of Download = 5.015 Mbps, Upload = 635.62 kbps, so I should be getting a good speed.
I have done tweaks also on my browsers and DNS Servers to try and speed them up with no noticeable effect. Also, I have cleaned cache & history as well as upgraded firmware on my router.
I am at the place that I am wondering, could I have so much old files from other programs that it is slowing me down? Should I blank my HDD and start over with a clean install.
There is actually no reason this should be happening when the rest of the system is running fine.

First, 5Mbps seems too fast for DSL. None of our local providers can hit that number. Most speed testers measure the maximum speed possible. I found one that seems to be more realistic as if it's reading actual speed at the moment of the test. Here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-speed-test/
I've noticed it's results vary with time of day, suggesting it is giving real numbers (we're on cable and the activity on our neighborhood node is very much time-dependent). Anyway, post the numbers the CNET test gives and we can go from there.
I don't think machine speed has a lot t do with it. Our cable modem serves five Macs ranging from an old G3/500 to a 2.2G Macbook Pro; all seem to get and display pages at roughly the same speed. I know I can't tell a difference.

  • Help! iOS 6 slows down internet! Downgrade iOS 6 to iOS 5?

Ever since I upgraded to iOS6, my iPad 2 Wifi became very buggy, internet somehow slows down considreably. Facetime, in particular, gets interrupted by a black screen with "poor connection" message frequently.
I have a 2Mbps internet, yes it's slow by worldwide standard, but it was adequate to do facetime video chat in iOS5, I had no problem whatsoever then, this only started after I upgraded to iOS6.
And it's not a connection issue, I've checked and rechecked. My other devices works fine with the same connection. ****, I can do HD 720p Skype video chat very smoothly on my laptop with the same 2Mbps connection, but somehow VGA resolution video chat on facetime is choppy?
I thought things would eventually get better with more upgrades, so I kept upgrading. 2 weeks ago, I upgraded to the latest 6.1.3, and facetime somehow got worse, black screens with "poor connection" seem to appear every 5-10 seconds.
I have spent the last 4 months trying to find solution to this "poor connection" issue. I have tried all the suggestions I could find on the net, I have reset my router, reset my iPad's network settings, change the date, etc. But nothing seems to work!
I'm fed up, I tried to downgrade my iPad back to iOS5 today. I just found out that Apple blocks us from doing so and it's impossible to do without jailbreaaking my iPad? Is there no legal way to downgrade to previous version? I feel that iOS6 is inferior to iOS5.
If there isn't, is there any other way to fix this poor connection issue? Please tell me something I don't know. It feels like I've read and tried every solution on the net and nothing seems to work.

The problem likely lies in your router regardless of whether other devices aren't displaying it. I use Facetime with iOS 6.1.3 and a 2 mbps internet connection without a problem.
Check for a setting for QoS in your router and turn it OFF. Also check for WMM.
I you need more help please give the make, model and version of your WiFi router.

Didn't want to make you feel like an Idiot. Just pointing otu that most all externals come, these days, formatted NTFS as the world runs on Windows computers and at least the last 2 Win OS version will only install and likes to use NTFS formatted drives. So most drive manufacturers Pre-Format their drive in that format.
What do you mean "I'm Cloning Time Now"? I don't get the TIME reference?
You Clone the install of OS X from a working Mac to the External. The Cloning willl make that external Bootable (It will boot on like Mac computers).
Then when that is done disconnect that external and connect it to your Mac. Start your Mac and it should boot off that external. If it doesn't then Restart and hold down the Option key and select the external as the boot drive.
Once the your Mac starts from the external the cloning program should already by running as it was running whenn the clone was made. Select the external as the source and your internal as the destination. you may want to shut the cloning program down and first use Disk Utility to Re-Partition your drive as One Partition.
Hopefully that will get rid of the encryption you enabled and give you a clean freshly formatted drive to clone to.
Then start up the cloniing software and do as pointed out above.

  • Internet is slow using Airport

For some reason my internet is slow when i am using Airport at home. But when I am at my friends house using airport is much faster. Can someone help me solve this issue. My internet is too slow at home...help, thank you

I had a slowed internet problem for a few weeks after using train wifi. While on the train I altered my Location settings in Network preferences. Last night I looked at Location settings and found my home router was not actively chosen. I made the selection and I'm up to speed again. Hope this helps.

  • Disconnected everything and now internet is slow

I had to disconnect my imac becuase i was getting carpet installed. So I connect everything and hook it back up, and now the internet is slow and laggy. youtube vids take about 5 times as long to load as they used to, i can't preview songs in itunes without rebuffing every 2 seconds, and now i can't connect to the internet with my wii or psp (used airport for wireless connection). If all I did was disconnect it how would that slow down my internet.
Info: use PPoE to connect to internet, have sbc yahoo dsl or att (i'm not sure since they merged, but my bill says att),
    Thanks all.

as a follow up i took a speed test on speedtest.net and here are my results. Avg download is about 520kb/s, and my avg upload is about 630kb/s my ping avg is 32ms, and my distance is about 50 miles from the server. If i shared the these test results when i call my isp, again i have sbc yahoo dsl, would this help out my case??

  • Internet really slow on my Mac

Hello, thank you in advance for any help.
My computer slows down to a really slow pace that i can't even check my email. I've checked my connection but it seems to be fine.
My husbands internet works fine - which leads me to think it is the computer.
I've tried rebooting the internet but it then just says it cannot connect.
I do still have tiger - wold upgrading it really help it? I do plan on buying it but, I can't till November. (BOO!)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is your husband's internet on a separate account on the same computer, or a separate computer? If it is a separate computer, it is possible you have issues connecting to your router/airport base station/wireless access point.
Do you have a separate box for your internet, and the connecting of multiple machines to the internet? That's the router, airport basetation, or wireless access point. The modem which either hooks into the phone line directly, or the cable line directly, or the satellite dish directly is often able to have a more reliable connection to the computer than the router. To test this, turn off the modem, and connect the computer directly to the modem. If the modem has a LAN and WAN ports, connect it to the same LAN port your husband's computer was hooked up to, and make sure your internet settings are the same as your husband's. If this does not sound like your setup:
    1. What is your internet service provider (who do you pay to have internet service)?
    2. What modems and/or routers do you have?
    3. Is it just one computer hooked up, or multiple?

  • Since I updated my iPad 2 to IOS 7 internet is slow

Since I updated my iPad 2 to IOS 7 internet is slow, so slow it is unusable.
Safari, Google Chrome, other browsers, Updates, Youtube, App Store all get time outs. Internet is unworkable.
On the internet a lot of the same stories. They say downgrade to 6.1.3, but Apple does not allow that.
Called to Apple support, they say never heard of, your the first. Internet tells another story.
The iPad has crashed 2 times now, so I installed a total clean version without back up, but same problem. Did every tip on the internet to speed up, like clearing cache or third party cookies on, etc. Sometimes it looks like it helps but after a few internet pages, again time outs.
    Please help!

    Wow that was simple.
Reboot the iPad and refresh the router!!!
I have been searching on the internet for hours.
Reïnstalling and everything, but no restart like this and no restart of the router.
    Your my hero.
    Thanks super much!!!!!

  • My internet has slowed down, other macs in the household seem to be fine.

  • How can an external drive cause my Internet to slow to a crawl and then fail?

I have two WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3 new drives. One I'm using for Time Machine and one for CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I have been trying to use them with my new MacBook Pro retina 13-inch.
For the last few days I've had weird problems trying to connect them via a USB 3 hub. I though the hub was the problem (because things seemed to be fine until I introduced a hub into the equation) and already returned one.
But now I see the same thing happening even without the hub.
It appears that one drive, when connected to a USB 3 port (it doesn't matter which port), even when it's doing nothing (I erased and and removed the CCC task), causes the Internet to slow to a crawl, and then stop. All connectivity ceases.
The instant I unmount and remove the drive the Internet springs back to normal speeds - over wifi about 110 Mbps.
Disk Utility says there are no problems with the disk. So does WD's only diagnostic utility. And the firmware is up-to-date.
The other disk, running Time Machine, seems to have no issues at all.
I guess I will return this drive. It could be subtly defective in some way. But what way? Why would an external USB 3 drive affect the Internet connectivity?
    doug

I came across this post while in search of the answer to the very same question only I am experiencing this problem when connecting to a USB 3.0 hub and nothing else.  The resuling slowdown in my internet speed leaves me hanging intermittently between screens in Safari, sometimes indefinitely.  When I remove the USB cable, normal speeds resume.  Activity Monitor shows no undue load on the CPU.  I did not notice this problem until just recently.  Could this have something to do with the recent OSX patch.
BTW: I am running a 2012 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Anybody have a clue as to what might be going on here?

  • HT5730 After I installed 10.8.48.4 Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection.  How can I get back to normal operating speed?

After I installed 10.8.4, my Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection -- unless it froze up completely.  How do I get my system back to a normal operating mode?  Can I dump 10.8.4 and go back to the one that at least worked?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they also slow?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they also slow?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it slow there too?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Help for Internet Explorer 11

Where do I find Help for Internet Explorer 11 ?
I have Windows 7 64-bit and IE11 but I can't find help for that latest browser. In Help and Support, I only find help for Internet Explorer 9
My problem is that since installing IE 11, I am unable to pin pages viewed on the screen to my Favorites; that is the pages that are pinned are different from the pages being viewed.

    Hi
from Desktop IE... Help>Online Support menu
    or go to
    http://answers.microsoft.com
Include the full address of any webpages that you are having issues with.
Pinning is not the same as Adding to favorites.... Web sites program how their sites are to be pinned or added to the Win7 or Win8 Start menus.

  • Internet is Slowing Down

Ok, look I know that there are some very informed computer techs here. That is why I came here to the Apple forums,,And what I want is the truth. Yes I want you to cough up the truth one of you tecchies out there who are familiar with what exactly in the 9e11 is going on here? The INTERNET has slowed down all accross the U.S.A.
I have tried with a reformatted Apple with 10.4.9 ,,,A fresh new PC, a Mac book at my friends Look, it does not matter where I go. The internet has slowwed down. I have ATT with the DSL Elite Package and when I do a speed test it says 5.3 Mbps. or so. But in real life is runs like 750 Kbps. Here I live in the North Bay Area, Napa Valley. So I am close to the main hubs in San Jose and San Fran.
So what gives? What is going on?
Ok now here is the deal, I clearly remember ripping fast speeds for YouTube and all those sites and stuff would download FAST! Now since about 2006 it has been rapidly slowing down. It seems that the bandwidth testers are not giving a true speedtest. I think the speedtesting system has been hacked or they are all unified in decieving everyone. I am not being fooled anymore. The internet has slowed down. Way down.

Of course you go to check your speed and "they" devote all resources to make it look good!
While I'm on Dial-up, my GF of 32 year has Comcast with it's bloated speeds & further boated "Burst" speeds, which last about the 1st KB, LOL.
I am not being fooled anymore. The internet has slowed down. Way down.
It's not your Internet anymore, It's Sell, Sell, Sell, even if we have to use inefficient Flash Code, or Proprietary MS code... give 'em a break, Billions of income is no good if you can't turn it into trillions overnight!
    Still...
Use Firefox with several of it's great Add-ons, and Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers for the Interface you're using...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Then Apply. These are safer/faster than most ISP's DNS numbers, and have been patched against DNS poisoning.

  • Internet connection slows down after a while

I have a wrt160n connected to an arris cable modem.  When I set it up it works fine - after a period of hours the internet connection slows down a lot.  If I then connect my computer directly to the modem it is is fast again.  But to get the signal to the router working fast again I have to reset the modem and power cycle the router.  Is there a conflict - is my router rationing access or what?

You should download and upgrade/flash your router's firmware...
    Download the Firmware from here
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
If your Internet Service Providor is Cable follow this link
If your Internet Service Providor is DSL follow this link
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1350 and click Save Settings...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -

    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
