Help! my laptop keeps shutting down itself.

When I power ON my laptop, after 2 or 3 seconds it automatically turn off. Then I press the power button again then nothing happened. When i close the laptop sceern and reopen it the laptop starts without pressing the power button  and after 2 or 3 seconds it turn off again.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? Thanks

Hi @Studemt
Welcome to the HP Community! I understand that your laptop does not start when you press the power button but if you close and reopen it turns on without you touching anything. This is very odd and I will be happy to help figure it out.
Let me start by getting some more information:
When you first start it up did you have to open the lid first or do you just shut it off with the lid open?
Do you typically shut it down or do you just let it go to sleep?
Does the same thing happen both when you are on battery and when you are connected to the wall?
What do you have your laptop set to do when you close the lid? If you're not sure this third-party link will show you how to do it.
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post solved your issue.

  • Laptop keeps shutting down???????

    Hi all,
I have an Equium laptop, which over the last few weeks has started shutting down on me!
Intially it seemed to be when it got hot,but now it shuts down within an hour of switching
on!!!! If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening,i would be very gratefull.
    Many thanks

I have a Satellite L505D-S5965 3GB SDRAM, 250GB HDD and have been having the exact same problem that many of you have. This PC was originally loaded in 2007 and purchased (NEW) in 2008 and I've been living with this shutdown for well over 3 yrs.
After reading every review and so-called help to this problem, I have tried them all (including a re-load of the-out-of-box-state), and I have found zero that work. On my own, I did try this: I went to the Toshiba Eco Utility that (I presume) is built-in to each Toshiba made. I turn this to -ON- and make sure the screen is @ a dim of 4 or less. Sure, this is no good for gaming, but this is not a gaming computer to begin with. It has worked. No more shut downs, not more crappy (can't start msgs). If I turn it off though, OMG - within' 30 minutes - I hear that "Pearmmm" sound many of you are all too familiar with - and it shuts down without warning. So my recommendation is to use Toshiba Eco Utility and keep the PC as COOL/COLD as possible. I'm no computer genius, but this appears to be a heat-related issue, and it's sad to see so many people having issues with their Toshiba (ON A TOSHIBA SITE/FORUM) and Toshiba has not acknowledged this issue as of yet. Trust me guys, this is the last Toshiba I will ever purchase. I hope THIS post helps someone out there. ~Blaz0n

  • Laptop keeps shutting down and restarting after touchpad dies

Trying to decide ehat went wacky on a friend;s Toshiba SATELLITE S105-3713 laptop (running WIndows Vista Home Premium).
FIRST: touchpad just stopped working; I hodeb up an external mouse and checked out the device manager - no touchpad existed at all!  Went rhough Control Panel - same thing!  As if there were no touchpad installed.
THEN:  Decided to donwlad and reinstall the driver but  as I typed it was as if something else had control of the keybaord - characters I entered were deleted as if the backspace key had been hit, or I selected a website and no sooner got there but I was returned back to the initial search screen.
Ran a quick anti-virus scan and came up with nothing.  Then I deleted the old Synaptic Touchpad  driver, rebooted and re-installed the driver from a flash drive (I had downloaded from the Toshiba support site using another PC).  Still no touchpad finction and system still behaving as if a ghost had contgrol of the keybaord and the pinting device.
NOW HERE IT GETS WEIRD!  Decided to shut the laptop down for the night but each time it shut down it staarted right up again!  Finallyhad to pull the power cord and the battery.
So...is it possible there is a nasty virus in here?  Or could a system short / partial failure cause this crazy behavior?
This is a backup system for my friend - has anew laptop with all current data on it so this one is not critical.
Should I try reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling the OS?  Or could htere be a hardware problem not worth fixing?
    Help!  Thanks  - Cindy

  • Laptop keeps shutting down when rendering 3D games

My laptop continues to shut down after about 5-15 minutes of playing 3D games, like Borderlands 2 and Half Life. The only exception to this is Minecraft (Only with the AtLauncher) and Portal 2. I have no clue why these games run correctly, considering that any other Java game won't stay on, and same for Source games. I have a Satellite C875-S7303. I know that it's an overheating problem, but I just want to know some ways I can fix/help this without opening the laptop. Also:This laptop is only 8 months old, it hasn't been dropped or cracked at all.

Hi If your going to play high end games, you are going to have to pay more than the 6 hundred dollars you paid for your machine. If it continues to get hot and shut down, you will be shopping for a gaming machine real soon. I would suggest a desk top next time if you want to be a gamer.Dokie!!PS Google Best Gaming Lap Tops.

  • Laptop keeps shutting down without warning because it thinks the battery is low, but it isn't.

My laptop is about 9 months old and recently it started to just shut down as if the battery were low. It is not low. It just did it now and the battery was at 80%. If I try to restart it it shows low battery and won't start. However, if I remove the battery and reinsert it, it starts up fine. Or, if I plug it in for a moment to start it up and then unplug it it works fine. The battery obviously still has plenty of juice left, but the computer is misreading it somehow. Although it still shows an accurate reading in the task bar. Any thoughts? Thank You.

    UltimateBid,
Thanks for the update. I do not see anything on my end that talks about it, you can try to update the BIOS and see if that resolves the issue, otherwise I would recommend service possibly.

  • Help! PC somehow shut down itself everytime i play game for a while.

I just upgraded my pc yerterday and i've got this super annoying problem. I just upgraded to MSI P67A-GD65 + MSI N560 gtx TI Twin Frozr2 OC, intel I7 2600k, 16 gig of ram and 3 hd with total of 2.5 TB storage. I have this psu called AmacRoX SPEED POWER AX650-S it serves me well for more than a year before i upgraded my pc yesterday.
So i have this problem, whenever i play a game in full screen, somehow a minute or two later my pc just died for no reason, and it start itself a couple seconds later. I've tried finding a solution on the net for a day and nothing works. I've tried not using newest driver, I've tried turning off that auto restart feature on the start up & recovery option thing but it still won't give me a blue screen. I don't know what else to do.
Btw here's what it said on the sides of my psu :
    AC Input : 100-240Vac - 10-5A 50-60hz
    DC Output :               +3.3V +5V +12V1 +12V2 +12V3 +12V4 -12V +5Vsb
    Max Output Current :   35A    30A   18A     18A     18A      18A   0.5A    3.0A
    Max Combined Pwr  :        180W                           624W
    Total Power             :                        650W
Is my psu really the problem? Cause as of now i don't have any more spare budget and just hoping that theres a button that i just have to push to fix this problem. I'm really desperate right now, Any help is appreciated! THANKS!!!

To check your PSU look at the labeling/sticker on it. It will have the complete set of stats there and there should be a line that says 12v check those to make sure that it gets at least 30amps on the 12v rail.
If it doesn't say 30a or more under the 12v then the PSU has been your issue the whole time. Also, don't simply buy a "more powerful" one. Get a more reliable, a tested, a known brand. One that is known to be decent. I Suggest a Corsair TX650v2 or higher.
Moving from 450w to 1000w won't cure your problem, it needs to have the amount of amps on the 12v rail which is requested by all the components of your system. If it doesn't have enough power to support your rig under strain, it will shut off to protect your investment. You're lucky you didn't buy too cheaply and make a bomb out of your PC instead.
I don't understand why people skimp out on the Heart of their rigs. The Power Supply is what pumps the much needed blood (electricity) to your organs (PC components). Without the proper amount, it doesn't work.
Use this link to figure out what kind of PSU you need:

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery

  • My mac keeps shutting down by itself

My mac keeps shutting down by itself. Seems to be when I'm trying to edit video on FCPX or when kids are playing a game. Its an older 2009 20" imac 2.66 Ghz Intel core Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.9.4
How can I stop this please? Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Have you tried creating a new user account and launching the apps there? If they work under the new account, then it is possible that you have a corrupted pref file.
I had this happen on my eMac, but it was when I was a newer Mac user and didn't know much. I ended up reinstalling to OS - which corrected it - but that is a bit drastic.
Let's not do that, but try some other troubleshooting first.

  • Why my 2009 desktop with OS Maverick keep shutting down by itself

Why my 2009 desktop using OS Maverick keep shutting down by itself?

When it shuts down, the screen blanks (more like turns grey, like the color of the background when on the log in screen). It reboots immediately, so at first the problem was presumed to be restarting, not shutting down and powering back on. The computer is usually very warm, and definitely gets hot easily. A test was run determine when the fan would turn on to start cooling the computer by running digits of Pi, and the tester concluded it was too close within the safe temperatures before it would permanently affect the computer. (I believe this was within 5ºF, but I am not 100% sure.) The times when it will turn off and reboot do not seem coorelated with much if anything. It has done this at multiple times, among running varying amounts of programs and for different lengths of time: right after logging into the user, within a minute of after it has turned off and rebooted, within 5 minutes, 10, 30, even 60 minutes of turning off and rebooting, when only running one program such as Firefox, when running various programs such as Firefox, iTunes, Microsoft Word, Sticky Notes....
    Basically, it makes no sense.

Because there is something wrong with the iPad? Try restoring the device with iTunes. Start with that.

Help please I have a power mac 8.0 mac osx 10.3.4. The problem is that it keeps shutting down on its own with no warning. this is totaly random with regards to the length of time. all I do know is the bottom right area of the mac feels warmer than the rest of it. does any one have a idea how to solve this.

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

Perhaps you could try this to resolve your issue: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
Try booting up to Safe Boot and see if you still have this issue in "safe mode." This will help you determine if the issue is caused by 3rd part sofware, or some other type of OS corruption.
