Help my mac won't start up all I have is a blue screen!

Last night my mac failed a security update, which I thought was strange but didn't take too much notice. Now it won't start up all I have is a light blue screen and a grey spinning circle
Help!

Nunu,
Ended up re-installing OS X all seems ok now although itunes won't work. Have downloaded system updates but now quicktime isn't current enought!
ARRRRRHHHH!
Well since you have a 450 I would suggest you keep a clone of your updated hard drive. That way if something happens you can just clone back from your update and not have to go through all the updating.
I've done that with my iBook and it's now crashed 3 times so it's sitting here waiting for me to put in a new hard drive. I have two clones of it so no problem.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • My mac won't start at all. Please help urgently. Thanks!

My shockwave was not working. So I decided to quit all programs and restart my mac
    It doesn't restart at all.
There is a ding and then it just gies power off.
Tried safe reboot but still the same thing happen.

Did you try booting into your Recovery partition? Hold down the command and R keys whilst booting and if you can get to your Recovery partition use Disk Utility to verify your disk and, if needed, repair the disk.
If it can't be repaired, then it's likely dying.

  • Help! mac won't work at all

My Mac has been having problems with the main hard drive (very slow, doesn't want to start up). I had an external drive that I added and when the hard drive wasn't working, it would directly load to the external drive.
Now it is not loading at all - it gets stuck on the question mark/folder screen.
I am a single mother... Please guide me - what is the best way to fix my computer so it is working well? I have no extra cash right now, so inexpensive is key...
    Thank you!!

Update - I tried updating to 10.4.9 but it froze on
the very last minute of update and would not load
again. I tried doing the disk utility but it does
not recognize the main hard drive. It is not
available as a selection. I went to reselect the
start up disk and the osX is not available. I
selected network (went through the globe) went back
to start up and tried to select nothing, but couldn't
    - so I selected Tiger DVD as start up and ejected it.
Now its stuck again on the question mark.
Suggestions? How can I repair the drive or get it to
start up on OSX? It is stuck on the question mark
    folder.
I am having other errors too like I was editing an
excel file and then the whole file got wiped out.
Now when you open it nothing happens. I forwarded
the file to my work and it is blank inside.
When I boot and hold X there is no effect.
Does anyone know what the "option" button is on the
microsoft keyboard (thats what I have).
It seems to be not recognizing the hard drive.
It used to recognize my external drive as an
alternative, but now that is not even working...??
Also, if I do HAVE to have it fixed what is the
easiest/cheapest way? Do I have to drag it in
somewhere? Is it going to break my empty wallet?
Thanks for ANY help you can offer.
When I first fired my spanking brand new Power Mac G4 i bought for my wife, the first thing that greeted me was a blinking ? mark. When I called Cupertino for help, the tech there told me to immediately take it back to the Apple Store and have the HDD replaced. He said, " you got a dead hard drive"
He was right. After the replacement, I haven't had any problems, so far. So this could be a possibility. Just my two cents.

  • My Mac won't start up all the way

if it gets to any screen, it's paw reset... So I reset and it won't restart.

Not sure what your Mac issues are but they're not good. Try these commands in Open Firmware if you have not already.
    1. If the Mac no longer boots to Open Firmware then force it to Open Firmware:
    Command-Option-O-F
    2. Once in Open Firmware try resetting the PRAM from there:
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
    3. while you are in Open Firmware you can attempt to eject the DVD with:
    eject cd

  • Need help. Mac won't start up from HDD

My problem is: I went to system preferences, chose network startup from the Startup menu. My mac rebooted itself and tried to connect from a network drive. After it didn't find any network drive I force restarted it. When it booted up again it was the flashing question mark folder on the start-up gray screen. I followed everyone i knows advice to try to start it up from the start-up disk.
I also tried holding Apple-s. I held down the command button, option button, and control button for a least 45 seconds each. Nothing has worked.
I am 100% positive that it is because the computer will not start up from the Internal Hard drive, Which i am also 100% possitive is not broken or corrupt. I can use all the advice and solutions you guys will give me.
    Thank You,
    Brody6786
p.s. the following keys don't work on my keyboard:
    both shifts, z, a, q, 1, f1, delete.
I have an external keyboard but it seems it doesn't turn on until the gray screen appears.

    HI,
When it booted up again it was the flashing question mark folder on the start-up gray screen.
That can mean several things. One, your Mac can't find a System Folder to boot from. Or two, the hard drive is failing or failed.
Go here: A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

  • Please help. Mac won't start.

Please help me. I have no AppleCare so I can't call them.
My mother bought me a MacBook pro earlier this year but we didn't purchase apple care. Right now I'm having a problem with startup. Everytime I try to start my MacBook Pro up, it automatically goes to os x utilities. It never did this before and I don't know what to do. Can someone please walk me through how to get my computer back to normal? I really can't afford another computer right now.

If it's less then a year old it's still under warranty and Apple will fix it free. In fact you can go to the apple.com, support and chat with someone who could probably tell you how to fix it.

  • Mac won't start after failed OS upgrade

I attempted to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard using an installation disc. The installion failed and now my mac won't start. It hangs on the apple logo screen for about 2 minutes then dies. I've tried booting from the disc and using the repair disk utility but I get an error saying the disk can't be repaired and instructing me to back up my files and erase the disk. Problem is, I can't get to my files because all I can do is boot from the disc drive. Can anyone suggest a way get the installion to work, or a way to back up my files?
iMac is 3 years old, 4 Gb ram and 2.66 Gh processor
Any help would be much appreciated.

Possibly we can save some of the files.
When booted from the Install Disc...
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
Hopefully you have another external drive and can Image the whole internal drive to an external.

If you have a external USB enclosure - trying installing your hard drive in that enclosure and connect it to your usb port - restart your macbook while holding down the options key.  If you Macbook boots to your desktop then you have a faulty cable.  If you get the same error, then your hard drive just died on you.
    good luck.
