HELP! My macbook has taken my grey's DVD hostage!

So about a month ago I was watching one of my Grey's Anatomy DVD's on my 15' MacBook Pro and it decided to literally take my DVD hostage! I've tried everything ie: Holding the trackpad down during start up, tilting the laptop at various angles and hitting the eject button etc...
The system wont recognize the DVD and it doesn't spin. It just makes sounds when it comes out of sleep mode or starts up.
Any help? please????

Have you tried holding down f12 during bootup? I ran into a problem with an upgrade xp pro disk needing another disk to verify the upgrade... It got stuck in a loop and f12 was the only thing that worked. I read somewhere for old mac books f12 was the key...

  • HELP! MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, and...

    Hi all
I noticed that there many of you have the same problem, but I really need some advice here, my MacBook Pro cant recognise or burn DVDs but only CDs, well actually occasionally it does recognise the DVDs then it burn but cannot write (on Toast), also in many other apps, like iDVD or DVDSP, it does run well on the first part of the burning but then failed at the end, with all kinda diff error msg. I have tried using many diff brands of disc too, inc verbatim.
So I borrowed my friends external DVD writer (actually a cheapy one with no brand), when I tried to burn using the external then an error msg comes up and says the writer cannot recognise the disc.
I dont wana get the MBP to repair but just wana get a external DVD writer to solve the problem, cos i need to use my computer and dont have a replacement mac, but now I am worry if the problem i now having is a system problem or just hardware, not sure if it is because the DVD writer i borrow is cheapy so it doesnt cope with mac, or just my MBP have system error that cant burn DVDs...
But my MBP can burn CDs so it is not a hardware problem? and if that is a system problem so even I buy a new DVD writer wont solve the problem?
btw, I have tried many solving methods like rewriting permission, reset PVRAM, etc
    PLSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS HELP

I'm having the same problem you are on my 2.4GHZ Core2Duo MBP running 10.5.2. It will sometimes recognize DVDs, sometimes not... it chuggs and clunks and then spits the disc out. If i re-insert it a view times it will show up on the desktop. I get failures from Toast as well as iDVD. If i keep trying i have been able to burn files onto a disc with the finder, but then the burner fails during the verification. If put the disc back in the contents appear to be correct (after a quick look). Burning CD-Rs seems to be working fine, that with the occasional DVD write seems to point away from the HW. I am trying with both Memorex DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD-Rs...
I have tried the command/option-PR reset combo with no luck.
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    -graham
PS the specific error i got from iDVD was: The error #-2147352539 was reported…

  • Im so frustrated.  Please help. Macbook has a virus

So I downloaded a wirless samsung new camera on my Macbook and it came with a virus or something.  I had no issues with my computer until I did this.  Now it crashes on me and keeps reobooting.  I have tried to delete the camera in safemode but it won't let me.  How do I get my computer running again.  I'm so frustrated.   HELP!!!!  Geek squad wanted $200 just to run a diagnostic.  ridiuculous

I found a website computer repair shop about 75 miles from me.  I emailed the guy and he wanted my serial number and IOS i was running.  I am hesitant about this
He cannot use this information to hack your computer.
However, you should be cautious about computer repairs. Do your research before leaving your computer with someone. Some folks aren't trustworthy, and may install malware for their own nefarious purposes while the machine is in their hands. I would be especially leery of this guy if he actually asked you what version of iOS you have on your MacBook Pro, since iOS only runs on iPhones, iPods and iPads, while Mac OS X runs on Macs. If he actually said iOS, he doesn't know squat about Macs and shouldn't be allowed to attempt to repair yours.
Is there no Apple Store close to you?

  • My wife's MacBook has a virus! Help, please.

    Hi,
My wife's computer has a virus. I've never seen anything like it on any computer. It's as if a mad person has taken control of the mouse and is operating it continuously by himself—opening and closing apps, locking out us out as we sit watching as helpless bystanders. Turning off the computer, etc. does nothing. Help.
    Best,
    Joseph

It is not likely a virus, but for info read Klaus's User Tips and the link to Thomas Reeds SafeMac site.
Do a restart of the MacBook and see if that helps, and are you using a mouse with the MacBook or the trackpad?
If a mouse, unplug/unpair it and use the trackpad.  If that helps then try attaching the mouse again.
If this continues and you are using the trackpad it could be a problem with the trackpad or its interface with the system...visit the Apple store genius bar and have the techs run their diagnostices to see what is causing this behavior.

  • My macbook has question mark flashing on a grey screen and no functions, my macbook has question mark flashing on a grey screen and no functions

    Hi
My MacBook has a question mark flashing on a grey screen and no functions, help?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'llsee a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • I have attempted to upgrade os4 to os7. icloud has taken an old expiered email address for which i do not know the password. It will not recognise my current email and password with itunes.  Any help appreciated

I have attempted to upgrade os4 to os7. At the end, it threw an error that i had to turn off "Find my iphone" on my phone, which seems to be impossible at that stage as i could not access beyond the upgrade screen.
I thin chose to set up as new iphone, but icloud has taken an old expired email address for which i do not know the password. icloud will not recognise my current itunes email and password, so i now have os7 but am unable to restore from my itunes back up.
Desperately need help please... Any help appreciated
    Thankyou

If you don't know your password, don't know your security questions and don't have a rescue address or don't receive a reset email, you should contact AppleCare who will initially try to assist you with a reset email or if unsuccessful will pass you to the security team to reset your security questions for you.
If you are in a region that doesn't have international telephone support try contacting Apple through iTunes Store Support.

  • The screen on my MacBook has been flickering and shaking up and down. It starts flickering, shaking, gets 'pixelated,' then eventually begins to fade to white and freezes. Restarting sometimes helps, but only temporarily. Why is this? How can I fix it?

The screen on my MacBook has just started flickering and shaking up and down while I am using it. The screen starts flickering, shaking, gets pixelated, begins to freeze, and eventually fades to white. Why is it doing this? How can I fix it?
It is a newer MacBook, just over 1 year. It is well cared for, hasn't been dropped, etc. I don't want to pay for expensive repairs for such a new computer, and I certainly can't afford a new one!
I've tried updating my system like the Support page suggested, but no improvement. The problem started just the other day, and is progressively getting worse.
.... as I typed this, it did it again. Only, this time it did not flicker and shake, but got 'pixelated' (pixels came up checkered-like darkened and lightened). It did this for about 2 minutes and then stopped after I did not touch the computer.... Now it is flickering... HELP!

it means that it is not a hardware issue.  Other then that, Im not too sure.  Sorry I can't help you any further, but Im sure others members of this forum will read your question and be able to help you.  Good luck

Help - i recently made put together a high quality movie for a relative, it has taken me months to complete and it goes for a total of 9 hours and 43 minutes ,however, it won't let me export the video at all! please help - its taken ages to make it!

    9 hours??!
Twice the length of a cinema epic?
How are you expecting to distribute it?
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • My MAcBook has 10.7.5 I wanted to update to Mountain Lion. I am told I cannot do this. Why? Also, my desktop has Calendar and MacBook has ICal I cannot link them together. Any help there?

My MacBook is 10.7.5 I wanted to update and purchase Mountain Lion app. I was told that I couldn't. I can understand, why? Also my newIMAC has Calendar and my MacBook has ICal. They are not linking together. CAn anyone help?

No, the model 4,1 Early 2008 MacBook will not be able to run Mountain Lion.
It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion requires 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion no longer supports Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

Restore the device using the most recent backup.
If you have not backed up the device recently, then there is nothing to restore.

  • My MacBook has a grey screen with a folder and a question mark in the middle what does this mean?

My MacBook has a grey screen with a folder and a question mark in the middle what does this mean?

It means a valid system cannot be found. You need to reinstall OS X.
    If you have Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you have Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
