Help!  My MacBook is starting up in Unix!

Today I was completing my software updates, and was installing the security update. It asked me to restart my computer, and when I did, it started up in Unix. I am able to start up in safe mode, but when I restart it goes back to unix. I had this problem 3 other separate times (while installing the firmware updates), but it always managed to resolve itself.
In unix it says: mDNSResponder, throttling, respawning too quickly, etc.
It then tries to restart...says the same thing and finally ends with
MacBook_I have no name!
Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions?
It would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure. I've seen people have the trouble but there's never really any common thread between them. Make sure you go to System Preferences->Startup Disk-> and make sure your OSX volume is selected.
I guess it's just one of those anomalies assuming it doesn't happen often or without using the keystroke to invoke it. At least you can get out of it now.

  • Hi i need help my Macbook dosent start up

I tried to repair from the osx utilities and it says it cant repair the hard drive that i need to restore but i dont have a backup and the files in it are very important what can i do? Im really worried please help me
Someone reommended me to reinstall OSX but im worried that might delte my data
I have friends with Macbook can i backup with their computer or what do you recommend me to do

    javierunited,
I recommend that you start regularly backing up files that are very important to you, since a hard drive problem can easily wipe out those very important files. An easy way to do regular backups is to purchase an external hard drive for use as a Time Machine backup destination.
However, since your files had not been important enough for you to have backed them up when your hard drive was working well, you can try following the instructions on this page, in the “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility” section, to see if you can make a backup of them now.

  • Help my macbook keeps starting on it's own

hello i've just brought this secondhand macbook 2007 , it came installed with os x lion from it's previous owner , and it had this problem where it would just start up on it's own while the lid was closed .
so i uninstalled lion , and installed my own copy of os x snow leopard , but unfortunely it's still doing this auto start own it's own .
it seems to be doing this at anytime it wishes , it might take 2 mins after shut down before it starts up again , but then the nxt time around , it might take 6 hrs later , then it will happen .
i've run the disk utillies from the os x disk about 15 times now , and it keeps telling me about this permissions problem , which when i run the repair persmissions part , it just doesn't seem to want to fix it after it has finished .
i've tried doing the smc thing , and also taking out the battery , and holding down the power button for 20 secs .
the battery when i recieved this mac was stuffed and nolonger taking a charge , i was wondering if this could be the promblem . ?
i've tried most of the ideas floating around here on the net , but now i'm at a loss lol , so any suggestions would be fantasic .
p.s the mac will start normally , and also all my programmes are running fine , it also shuts down normal as well ...............   confused as to why it keeps wanting to start on it's own at anytime of the day or night with the lid closed lol ????????

The permissions issue has nothing to do with the random startup. The MacBook does not even look at software until after it powers on. Since you have already reset the SMC, you are looking at a deeper hardware issue. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

  • Help - my MacBook wont start?

The led is on but the machine wont start up?
I have tryed to hold the powerbutton down and violet close, but when I try to start up, the same problem appears :-(

I think you'll need to tell us a bit more: MacBook model, and what exactly happens.
For example, you're posting here under "MacBook Air" but refer to an LED... which the MBA doesn't have.
After holding down the Power button for a while (which shuts down the Mac no matter what), is that LED still on?
When you attempt to start it, can you hear the start-up gong?
Does the screen remain dark, or do you get to see at least a grey screen? If so, how far does it go before it stalls?

  • My Macbook has started running really slow, help!

Hello, my Macbook has started to run at a far slower pace than usual. I have had my macbook since December of 2010 and for the past few weeks I have noticed that the rainbow wheel would appear when I would try to do even the most simplest of things (i.g. open Microsoft Word). Using the terminal's top command I would notice that the fc-cache would use a high percent of the system. However that ceased using the command "fc-cache -f -r -v", and it seemed as if the font fc-cache stopped. However that did not stop the problem.
I then decided to run a EtreCheck run and the following came out:

I'll take a wild guess that the most noticeable slowdown began after you installed OS X Mavericks.
    1. You have plenty of hard disk space, 205GB available of 250GB, but you have only 2GB system RAM installed. 2GB RAM was adequate for acceptable performance using OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Technically, Apple specs say that OS X 10.9 Mavericks REQUIRES just 2GB RAM, but realistically, 2GB is not nearly enough to run it with decent performance, especially if you run both a browser and other application programs simultaneously. Your system can hold a maximum of 16GB RAM. Upgrading to 4GB RAM would absolutely help performance. Upgrading to 8GB might provide additional performance with OS X Mavericks. I won't speculate on the benefits of 16GB.
Disclaimer: I use OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion as my primary operating system, about 8 hours every day. I run Mavericks once a week or less for a couple of hours, and for only one application, so my experience with Mavericks is limited, and your use is likely considerably different. I use OS X Mavericks to run Windows 7 using Parallels 9, in order to use my licensed copy of Windows MS-Office 2011.   I didn't like Windows 7 performance with Parallels 9 running in Mavericks with just 4GB installed on my mid-2011 2.5Ghz iMac, so I upgraded to 8GB.
Macs are notoriously picky about system RAM, and not all RAM vendors are the same when it comes to Mac. I recommend purchasing your Mac RAM upgrade from Apple, Crucial.com, or Other World Computing http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_Whi te
Depending upon where you purchase the RAM and whether you are confident to install it yourself, a 4GB RAM upgrade will likely cost well under US$100. 8GB would likely cost around $100. Your Mac can use up to 16GB, at a cost over $200. Before spending any money to upgrade an older computer, always consider how much you're willing to spend on a  4-year-old computer, versus saving that money, if you have plans to purchase a new(er) Mac in the near future.
Recent generations of Mac computers seem to be highly reliable. My son has a mid-2009 aluminum MacBook Pro that easily survived 4 years of college and is still going strong. We just recently upgraded his system to 8GB RAM so he can try out Mavericks on a spare external drive before he decides whether or not to upgrade.
    2. You're running Google Chrome browser. I don't use it based on advice in several discussion threads within Apple Support Communities from users who are far more knowledgable that I am about such things. They say the Chrome browser does not use RAM very efficiently, and that Firefox and Safari are better.
    3. You haven't rebooted your computer in 34 days. With such limited RAM, until you upgrade, rebooting the computer at least every few days could increase performance a little bit. Some programs, particularly web browsers, often take huge amounts of available RAM and open dozens or even hundreds of links, then don't release RAM properly when you close browser windows.

  • Macbook wont start... help!

  • My Macbook Pro started running really slow

This week my Macbook Pro started running super slow, taking ages to open programs and giving me the color wheel alllll the time. I've never had problems like this before! I'm not running many applications or doing anything unusual but it's just running extra slow. Once or twice it has also totally gone to sleep while I was in the middle of using it, and I had to wake it back up. It has also been getting really hot and the battery life seems worse...! This is all new, I'm using my computer just as I always have but it suddenly has issues.
The only thing it has been doing for a while is sometimes the screen will go blue - this either corrects itself within a few seconds or if I close my Macbook and then reopen it, the screen is back to normal. This is very rare though and I don't know if it's related to the slowness problem.
What can I do to fix this??

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. The "etrecheck" output is irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Starting up in Unix

Hello all. So my white Macbook will only start up in Unix, and says the following:
    bad system call
    responding too quickly - throttling
more failures will cause job removal
Macbook - I have no name
Now, I am able to start up in OS X using Safe Boot, but I'd really like to be able to listen to music and do all the other things Safe Mode doesn't allow. If anyone has an idea of how I can get my computer to start up normally, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sam

  • Please help, my macbook pro won't boot

    Hey there, i need help
My macbook pro wont start, so after i press the power button, the apple logo will pop out with a rotating circle below the logo, and there's also a bar below, but in my case that bar will only run til almost complete (there's only about 0.1cm left) and it'll suddenly go off
I've tried to use Safe Mode boot and fsck -fy, they didn't work.
I've also tried to enter the Disk Utility and repair the hd, but it keeps on experiencing error, it says "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk ...." for both the TOSHIBA and Macintosh HD
From what i remember i haven't ever used the Time Machine backup before
How do i fix this without losing my files? I have bunch of important projects there and i need to finish them soon
    Please help, thank you

    Hi srhnizomi,
If your Mac will not boot past the grey Apple screen, you may find the following article helpful:

  • Help! MacBook fan keeps running after shutdown!

Twice since getting my MacBook a month ago, I've shut down the computer and put it in its carrying case, only to later notice it still emitting heat and its fan running a couple of hours later.
None of the power indicator lights is on. I could neither get it to start up or shut down (even after holding down the power button for over 5 seconds). The only way I could jolt it awake was to plug in its power adapter and then turn it on.
One random factor that I haven't willingly checked is that this may be happening when I close the screen immediately (1 second) after shutdown is complete. Maybe I'm jolting it before it completely shuts down?
Anyone else having this problem? And has anyone found a solution? I hope I don't have a dud here.

MacBook (Intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I've had this too.
You need to let it all shut down completely before you close the screen or move it. Don't just let the screen go black - you need to make sure everything has stoped moving etc. It seems to be a bit tempermental about this! Apparently it gets confused if you shut the lid too quickly and tries to sleep instead.
After making sure I shut down properly I haven't had the problem again.
    Hope that helped.

  • Macbook want start and makes a load beep

A friends Macbook wont start, when pressing the power button the macbook goes to a blank grey screen (with no apple logo) and also makes one load beep
    Please post any help
Sorry but because it wont start cant tell you what operating system or model

Try booting from the install disk.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.

  • My macbook stops start up

hallo I am a newbie and I'm from indonesia.
    please help me
I have macbook pro 13" 2009. Several months ago (december'14) my macbook hangs and shut down. I don't know why, when I tried to turn it on, the display won't show up (keep dark) but it still sounds well like you know when macbook turns on. I went to ibox then they said I have to change my monitor display. The original mac is so expensive like it costs $550! I rather buy a new macbook huh? I'm so desperate I'm still on college I don't wanna spend a lot of money so what I've done is just keep my macbook in home.
Yesterday I'm curious and try to turn it on. It works! my display shows up and start up. I keep waiting but it takes too long. Then my start up is already half way but its suddenly shut down by itself! I didn't do anything. the power battery is on. What should I do? I keep try it for like 5 times but it keeps shut down at halfway! so desperate....
Please help my macbook.... please help me
thank you so much for you!

    Hi nruk
Yes I have password protection on but it was set to automatically log in.
Before anyone else wipes their mac and starts afresh can I just say there is a way you can view your files. In fact you can view your entire machine. heres how:
    1. start the machine in Firewire mode (hold the T key in and press the start button - the machine should eventually bounce a firewire icon around the screen even when the screen looks like the one above).
    2. connect your computer to another mac via firewire cable.
    3. Go into 'System Preferences'
    4. Click on Startup Disk
    5. Select the Firewire drive (which is your currently unaccessible machine) as the start up computer
    6. hit the restart button
Your current mac will now restart but it will restart using the system folder from the inaccessible mac.
You will now be able to view your broken mac's desktop and all the files etc.
I believe a problem arose with the graphics card on this machine - It may not be permanently damaged but at least by accessing the mac using another computer screen I was able to salvage all the files I needed and set up the VNC so I can remotely log into it without having to be connected.
I would be very interested to know if you all had other monitors attached to your machines at the time
    Hope this helps
