Help my macbook keeps starting on it's own
hello i've just brought this secondhand macbook 2007 , it came installed with os x lion from it's previous owner , and it had this problem where it would just start up on it's own while the lid was closed .
so i uninstalled lion , and installed my own copy of os x snow leopard , but unfortunely it's still doing this auto start own it's own .
it seems to be doing this at anytime it wishes , it might take 2 mins after shut down before it starts up again , but then the nxt time around , it might take 6 hrs later , then it will happen .
i've run the disk utillies from the os x disk about 15 times now , and it keeps telling me about this permissions problem , which when i run the repair persmissions part , it just doesn't seem to want to fix it after it has finished .
i've tried doing the smc thing , and also taking out the battery , and holding down the power button for 20 secs .
the battery when i recieved this mac was stuffed and nolonger taking a charge , i was wondering if this could be the promblem . ?
i've tried most of the ideas floating around here on the net , but now i'm at a loss lol , so any suggestions would be fantasic .
p.s the mac will start normally , and also all my programmes are running fine , it also shuts down normal as well ............... confused as to why it keeps wanting to start on it's own at anytime of the day or night with the lid closed lol ????????
The permissions issue has nothing to do with the random startup. The MacBook does not even look at software until after it powers on. Since you have already reset the SMC, you are looking at a deeper hardware issue. Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

My battery cannot last the day now. Even with Advanced Task Killer, my applications are starting to open all day long every 5 minutes on their own. They never did this before the update. This includes apps like Facebook, Words with Friends, Maps, and whatever the new Media Hub.
Also this new Media Hub won't let me in to try to turn off any settings because it wants me to update. What is it? Can I get rid of it?PJNC284 wrote:
Ditch ATK and you should be fine. Those apps aren't doing anything for the most part unless you have them syncing which can be adjusted in the app specific settings. You'll just kill your battery like you're doing now if you try to keep them closed.
I agree with PJNC284, and get rid of the task killer. I found that it was somewhat useless because like he said, they will just start back up, and that takes resources and power to do. The biggest thing is the apps that sync, you need to make sure they are adjusted to suit your needs. Fast / more often the sync results in less battery life. -

I recommend that you start regularly backing up files that are very important to you, since a hard drive problem can easily wipe out those very important files. An easy way to do regular backups is to purchase an external hard drive for use as a Time Machine backup destination.
However, since your files had not been important enough for you to have backed them up when your hard drive was working well, you can try following the instructions on this page, in the “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility” section, to see if you can make a backup of them now. -
The led is on but the machine wont start up?
I have tryed to hold the powerbutton down and violet close, but when I try to start up, the same problem appears :-(I think you'll need to tell us a bit more: MacBook model, and what exactly happens.
For example, you're posting here under "MacBook Air" but refer to an LED... which the MBA doesn't have.
After holding down the Power button for a while (which shuts down the Mac no matter what), is that LED still on?
When you attempt to start it, can you hear the start-up gong?
Does the screen remain dark, or do you get to see at least a grey screen? If so, how far does it go before it stalls? -
IChat keeps starting on it's own?
I have a greyed out "iChat" bubble in my status bar always, and iChat will startup when someone instant messages me. Not that big of a deal, but it kind of freaks me out that people know when I'm home and using my computer. I have set my status to away, How can I turn this off?
User Accounts: I have no programs running on startup
iChat Preferences: I've looked all through here, and can't find anything.
Right clicking the iChat icon: options, open at login NOT selected.
There has to be something I'm missing.
Anyone else having this issue?

By default the AIM service is set up to do Off Line Messages.
You can visit your account page there and set it to Not do them.
(in fact if you get a AIMsysMessage asking if you want it and reply to turn it Off this is the only place to turn it On again)
Also by Default, iChatAgent (the support App) starts up at Computer Start up and there is a setting in the General Section that can make sure you don't get the surprise IM when iChat was Shut down but you are at the computer. (it's part of the Off Line Messaging set up)

Mail keeps running on it's own?
New Macbook Pro... I don't want to use the built in mail app. But it keeps popping up every few times I boot up, or my Macbook wakes up from sleep, asking to be set up. I've checked, and it does not have "Open At Login" checked in the dock, and it's not in "Login Items" in System Preferences. However it keeps starting on it's own and asking to be set up. Thanks!There is probably some other program that is running and trying to send a message. Many programs have a mail to option which would open the default mail application of the computer. If there is a different program you'd like to use you can change the default mail program in Mail>Preferences. Is there a program you frequently have open when the issue occurs? If you create a new user and go in to that user does the issue persist? If restart in safe mode, start while holding shift, does the issue persist?

my macbook wont start the screen turn blue and stay like that for hrs. It only work when i use safe mode, i try to use disk utilities to fix it but the disk utilities keep saying error and a bunch of other stuff. I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but my macbook keeps ejecting the disc. It started to install the first time and said it needed to restart to finish, restarted but ejected the disc. It ejects every time now. I've also installed the 10.5.8 combo update but that didn't help it. I've tried restarting the macbook with the disc in, holding c, all that. Why won't this work?!
Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

MY Macbook air keeps starting in "safe boot" mode, no idea why. I cannot get into the system because this mode makes everything write in capital letters and my password is in lower case. I keep turning it off and on but nothing changes and i cannot access my computer. Please can someone help me? Thank you
I'm not getting a clear picture at all of what problems you're seeing. If you are seeing online accounts have their passwords changed, those accounts are being hacked. Someone may already have access to some account and is using that access to reset passwords on other accounts. Change the password on EVERY online account you have. Be sure to use a strong password, and don't use the same password on more than one site.
If you are seeing changes to your bookmarks and browser history, your Apple ID may be one of the accounts that has been hacked. After changing the password on your Apple ID, you need to lock it down with two-factor authentication:

Beyond that, we will need additional details about what specific symptoms you're seeing in order to help further. One thing I can say, though, is that these problems are very unlikely to be due to any kind of malware. See my Mac Malware Guide to learn more on that topic. -
my macbook keeps beeping while its on, ita at random and not on a start up, it just happens while its on the homepage, if i turn the sound off it doesnt happen which leads me to believe something is running or on that i cant see to turn off
Your MBP has unusual symptoms. I suggest starting with an Apple Hardware Test:

i am using for first time the time machine and an external hard drive because I want to erase my macbook and start from zero files. Am i keeping my files in the portable hard disk when I will connect it again with the macbook or the time machine will erase all?

Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.
