Help!  My MacBook won't automatically recognize my new Airport Express's home network.

Hello all.  I recently purchased a new Airport Express to replace my old 2008 Airport Express and I set up the new Airport Express using the same Network name (e.g., let's call it "MyHomeNetworkWiFi").  With my old Airport Express, whenever I turned on or woke-up my MacBook, it would default connect to the "MyHomeNetworkWiFi" network.  Now, with my new Airport Express, whenever I turn on or wake-up my MacBook, there is no automatic WiFi connection.  I need to open my WiFi list and manually select "MyHomeNetworkWiFi" to get the connection.  It does not ask me for the security code each time;  it just wants me to manually select the network to join.
How can I get it to automatically connect to my default network?
When I go into my Network Preference, I see my "MyHomeNetworkWiFi" listed there.  When I click on Advanced, I see "MyHomeNetworkWiFi" at the top of the list.  I"m not sure what else to do.
(Incidentally, my iPhone and iPad do not have this probably.  The automatically connect just fine).
Thanks!

OK -- Please disregard.  I figured it out.  The answer had to do with going into my network preferences, removing "MyHomeNetworkWiFi" and then adding "MyHomeNetworkWiFi" back.

My 15" MacBook Pro randomly loses connection to my AirPort Express wi-fi network. I have to switch off wi-fi on my Mac then switch on again to reconnect. Any reason why this random occurrence keeps happening which never happened before? Any solutions and fixes would also be welcomed.

In the airport utility, you can alter the radio modes... and change the channels from automatic to a manual one.
Hold down the Option key, and  click on your wifi icon, it will tell you what channels are currently being used on your OSX.

  • Airport Utility won't recognize my new Airport Express

I see similar ports but don't understand the solution.  Just bought an Airport Epxress to use for AirTunes from my MacAir notebook running Lion.  Downloaded the right Airport Utility.  After plugging in the AE, the amber light was solid then just flashed.  The manual (pg 32) was no help.  Airport Utility finally recognized the AE and I was able to configure it. The utility showed my my wireless network and  asked me the WEP. I entered than and it said successful. Said window would stay open until AE restarted.  Never did.  I finally powered it off and on a couple of times.  Airport Utility cannot find it now. Just continues to flash the amber on and off.  The manual is kind of useless since it says to select the base station from the Airport Utility menu. I don't have anything to select.

How are you connected? Meaning, how is the Mac
running the AirPort Utility attached to the new
AEBS(n) and the AX's? Your problem is likely that the
AX's are already named and configured to operate in
the old network, but your connection method doesn't
    provide visibility to them...
Thank you for posting back to me. I finally got them to work and your explanation I thinks explains to me what happened. (I got them up and running just before I saw your reply.) I unplugged both of them and connected them via an ethernet cable to the new aebs and also did a hard restart for both. They then showed up with their alphanumeric titles, not the titles I had given them. Airport Utility recognized them after that. Hopefully my experience and your explanation will help others too. Thanks again.

  • MacBook won't automatically sleep

My MacBook won't automatically sleep anymore. If I close the lid or command it to sleep, it will. But it will no longer automatically sleep. I've tried tons of fixes and searched for hours on the internet, but still have not found a solution. I seem to have noticed that this starting happening after I installed Windows XP via Bootcamp, so I'm guessing that the problem is related to that. Any ideas?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit. If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • MacBook Pro loses wifi connection upon wake since I bought a new AirPort Express

Hi. I've been using Apple devices and computers since february 2008 and had no problems until now. I currently own an early 2011 13" MacBook Pro and a PC running Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10. Until early February, I used a 2nd gen AirPort Extreme to connect to wifi upstairs, being connected via Ethernet to my ISP's modem located downstairs which provides a weak wifi signal (of course my ISP says it's impossible since their modem is the best on the market), not even compatible with Apple's wifi systems (all other French ISPs modems are compatible with it), that's why I had to get a 30 ft ethernet cable running down the stairs. My connection was lost everytime I went upstairs/downstairs so I bought a new Airport Express to replace my ISP's modem wifi signal and I'm using my AirPort Extreme to extend the wifi network upstairs. Now all my devices and computers have a strong wifi signal anywhere in my house with only one downside: My MacBook Pro (and only it) loses the wifi connection upon wake after sleep and I have to disconnect/reconnect it manually. I didn't bother installing Windows on it as I removed the Superdrive to setup a DIY Fusion Drive a few months ago so I can no longer boot optical medias and I can't know if it's a hardware or software problem. Again, everything was working all right on it until I changed my Wifi network configuration a month ago when I bought my Airport Express.
    Can anyone help me ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Well this isn't making sence.
What is the model # on your extreme?

  • How do you set up a MacBook Pro and a PC with one Airport Express?

I have a MacBook and my roommate has a PC and we're trying to set up my new Airport Express at our college so we can hook up our computers and printers to it. I had it so that my laptop worked fine, but hers would "connect" and not really have any internet connection at all. Class starts on Thursday, so help would be kindly appreciated!

I'm a great believer in the KISS principle.
Configuration is simple if you start from a factory default condition.  Connect the Airport to AC power and finally to the Internet modem (or modem/router).  Open Airport Utility on your Mac or other computer and accept all of the recommendations.  After confirming that it works, insert your desired administrative and WiFi passwords.
Do not expect the Airport to respond instantly to the configuration commands.  BE PATIENT!

  • Lots of existing threads, but no consistent answer - what settings need to be applied to the 2012 (new) Airport Express for it to work at hotels with an ethernet only connection?  Any answers specific to Japan would be helpful.

Lots of existing threads, but no consistent answer - what settings need to be applied to the 2012 (new) Airport Express for it to work at hotels with an ethernet only connection?  Any answers specific to Japan would be helpful.  I would prefer not to take my old Dell laptop and just be able to use my Ipad 2 via the wireless connection that the Airport Express creates.  However, I can configure the Airport Express at home prior to leaving if that is the best thing to do.

I have a very similar problem with my AE! My MacBook, MacBook Pro & iPod Touch (1st Generation) all get a GREAT signal from our AE. BUT, our iPod Touch (2nd Generation) and new iPad (WiFi) get terrible signal strength unless we're right next to the AE!! Tech support at Apple is of no help! I'm ready to sell them all! This all started when we got the last OS update for iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad. So it must be a software issue not a hardware one..
    Any ideas?

  • HT4600 Just bought a new  Airport Express trying to get the other airport clients to recognize new 802.11n Wifi?

Just purchased a new Airport Express 802.11N instal with new hi speed Xfinity moden in same location.  Cant get a green light on the 2 remote client  airports located in other spaces in home.  Help?

What is the exact model of the Xfinity modem that you have? Is the new AirPort Express connected directly to this modem by Ethernet?
By "remote client airports" do you mean additional AirPort base stations or Apple computers?

  • Help?  I keep getting "Unexpected Error" everytime I try to use my new Airport Express to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule.

I am trying to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule using the new Airport Express I just bought, but no matter what I try I keep getting "Unexpected Error.  Try again".  The Express is still flashing Amber.  I cannot get it to turn green.  What am I doing wrong here?  Please help me.

Locate the AirPort Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup.
Power off and restart the Time Capsule
Shut down and restart the Mac. Turn on the wireless on the Mac and temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the AirPort Express. In other words, you want to set up the AirPort Express using wireless, since that is the way that it will be used.
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything, and hopefully announces a message of Setup Complete. Click Done.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Avoid obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as much as possible.
Walls, ceilings, mirrors, heavy furniture, etc. just kill the wireless signal quality. Keep any cordless phones as far away from either router as possible.
It would be much better if you could plan to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable, as best case.....you will be losing about half of the network speed trying to use wireless to extend.

  • My wireless iBookG4 sees my new Airport Express, but my PowerMac G5 won't!

My wireless iBookG4 sees my new Airport Express, but my PowerMac G5 won't!
I find this really strange. I have a cable modem coming in. There is an Airport Express hooked up to it. I use this to allow free movement about the house for my iBook, bhile my PowerMac g5 stays wired via ethernet.
Now I have purchased a second Airport Express for the living room, hooked up to BOSE speakers. The iBook sees the new Airport Express and can brpadcast iTues to it, no problem. The problem IS, I can't get the PowerMac to see the new Airport Express AT ALL--- it only sees the original one (the one that has the ethernet connected to it) PLUS--- the new Airport Express LCD flashes amber, not green... what is going on???

The new Express is not really on your network but is able to communicate with the laptop using Bonjour. Here's Apple's explanation for the flashing amber:
Startup is complete, but AirPort Express didn't get an IP connection. Depending on your setup, it may mean AirPort Express is out of network range, unplugged from Ethernet, lacks a path to the Internet (or local router), or that there's an issue with your Internet service provider.
Does your PowerMac G5 have an Airport card? If it does then it isn't associated with the new Airport. Both should be listed under the Airport menu but only one has a checkmark. If it doesn't have a card it won't be able to see the new Airport until you configure the new Airport as an extension of the first wireless network, called WDS or Wireless Distribution System.

  • I downloaded the new Pages and Numbers through my app store but when I open my old documents, it still tells me my 30 day trial is over. How do I get the computer to automatically recognize the new applications?

More information: I have a 3 year old MacBook and had been using "Microsoft for Mac" until last week when I took my MacBook in for some upgrades- including the operating system Lion. I have been unable to use the Word, Excel, etc. programs because they are not supported on the new operating system... and I already used my 30 day trial of iWork when we first purchased the computer. I decided to buy Pages and Numbers through the App Store icon. When I open the Pages and Numbers under my Applications, I can get them to work. However, when I open old documents saved on my computer, they go into the 'old' iWork messages of that my trial has expired. How do I get the computer to automatically recognize that I've purchased Pages and Numbers?

You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

  • My brand new laptop won't even recognize a new device (iTouch)

I just got a new Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista 32-bit OS for school, and it wont recognize a new device when I plug in my iPod Touch. My iPod doesn't even say it is being charged. I tried every USB port on multiple devices, so I know they all work. Also, when I plug it back into my old computer where I first synced it, it works just fine. Help me please, I can't go off to school without being able to use my iPod, it was quite an investment.

    I fixed it. It's a long story.
When I first installed iTunes, whenever it was running, every seven seconds a message would pop up saying 'AppleMobileDeviceHelper' was malfunctioning, or something of the sort. So I got sick of it, found the program in "Program Files" and uninstalled it. Well, I have been hopelessly browsing through all sorts of iPod help files on the internet, and one said to try to reinstall iTunes, and mentioned the AppleMobileDeviceHelper, which sparked my memory of deleting it, and led me to believe it was my problem. So after uninstalling iTunes, I went back to reinstall it, and saw it gave the option of "Windows Vista (64-bit)" or "Windows XP or Windows Vista." When I first installed it, I had no idea there were multiple kinds of Vista, so I must have automatically just picked the first option, bringing the weeks of distress.
Boy do I feel dumb, but hopefully people can learn from my mistake.
