Help, my mbp crashed disk utility wont stop running

A couple of days ago, I was using firefox, google earth, and vuze.  I was trying to close some stuff down as my mac was slowing down pretty bad.  She locked up, couldn't force quit... persisted, shut down with the off button.  After that it wouldn't beboot, and I had a dark gray screen with spinning wheel.  I couldn't boot into safe mode, so I went to the disk utility it ran for many hours, and did nothing. It found errors, but did not progress in fixing them... Just said estimated time 1 minute.
Any ideas?
It's a mid 2009 intel 2.66ghz, I believe.

What is the SMART status of your hard drive? If it's "Failing," just replace the drive immediately. It will be much easier for you to try to recover data from it when your MBP is back up and running properly again. You'll need an external enclosure or a SATA-to-USB adapter and a downloaded copy of Data Rescue 3 or FileSalvage, both of which offer free demo versions that show exactly what the full purchased version would be able to recover.
Data Rescue 3: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
FileSalvage 7: http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id= 1
There is no guarantee that you'll be able to recover any or all of your data if the drive has suffered a mechanical or electronic failure.

  • Does Your Disk Utility App Stop Running Under Mac OS 10.9 - Mavericks

I am using a 2012 MacBook Air running Mac OS 10.9 - Mavericks. The Disk Utility app Verify function stops running, most often during the "Checking Volume Information" part of the test, and does not display any results. The app does not crash: I can run Verify over and over. The app simply stops running. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a Drobo (2nd Gen) attached to my early 2009 Mac Pro via Firewire and it consistently has this problem with the Disk Utility app on Mavericks.
Maybe there's a timeout on the Disk Utility.
It seems that diskutil and fsck on the command line work.
First, get the device identifier for the volume you want to check:
    bash-3.2$ diskutil list /Volumes/Drobo
    /dev/disk5
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *17.6 TB    disk5
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk5s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Drobo                   17.6 TB    disk5s2
then, use diskutil to  verify the volume:
    bash-3.2$ sudo diskutil verifyVolume /dev/disk5s2
Started file system verification on disk5s2 Drobo
    Checking file system
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
    Checking extents overflow file
    Checking catalog file
    Checking multi-linked files
    Checking catalog hierarchy
    Checking extended attributes file
    Checking volume bitmap
    Checking volume information
The volume Drobo appears to be OK
Finished file system verification on disk5s2 Drobo
You can also use fsck in debug mode if you like more verbose output. Here I first unmount and then use the raw device:
    root# diskutil umount /Volumes/Drobo
    Volume Drobo on disk5s2 unmounted
    root# fsck_hfs -d -l -f  /dev/rdisk5s2
    ** /dev/rdisk5s2 (NO WRITE)
            Using cacheBlockSize=32K cacheTotalBlock=98304 cacheSize=3145728K.
       Executing fsck_hfs (version hfs-226.1.1).
    ** Performing live verification.
** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
       The volume name is Drobo
    ** Checking extents overflow file.
    ** Checking catalog file.
    ** Checking multi-linked files.
    ** Checking catalog hierarchy.
    ** Checking extended attributes file.
    ** Checking volume bitmap.
    ** Checking volume information.
** The volume Drobo appears to be OK.
            CheckHFS returned 0, fsmodified = 0
    Then remount:
    root# diskutil mount /dev/disk5s2
    Volume Drobo on /dev/disk5s2 mounted
You should really read the fsck man page if you go this route. There are many options and many ways you could accidentally do something you don't intend to do.
    Enjoy!

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

    Choose the method for:

If this does not help, you may have to take the MBP to the Apple Store  to have it checked.

  • HT1782 disk utility wont fix my hard drive please help!!! it has assignments on it

hey i usually use disk utility to fix my hard drive problems of been invisible, but lately, doing disk utility and repairing the disk doesn't seem to work anymore? do you guys have any other suggestions, its a seagate go flex hard drive

You need to boot to recovery mode to repair the boot drive (partition containing the operating system). Hold cmd+r on boot up, or hold the alt key and select recovery when you are given the options of what partition to boot to.

  • Disk utility wont resize/add/delete a partition (HD is part of a raid)

I have two SSD set in a raid 0 in my MBP 15" late 2011 (Mountain Lion 10.8.2)
    256gb Samsung
    120gb Vertex 3
My Vertex 3 is partitioned into 2 parts
    1.  70gb set in raid 0 with another 70gb partition in the Samsung
    2.  50gb dedicated to Windows 7
My Samsung is partitioned in to 2 parts
    1.  70gb set in raid 0 with the other 70gb partition in the Vertex 3
    2.  The rest of the space in this SSD is just for data storage.
The reason why I did it this way is a long story since it deals with issues in the optical bay SATA speed limitations so that's a different topic.
    So here is my problem:
I have two 70gb partitions set in raid 0 between the two SSD's, the 50gb partition that was in the Vertex 3 dedicated to Windows.  After a while I realized I dont use windows that much and wanted to erase that partition.  Erasing it was easy, but now with the 50gb space left over I try to use disk utiility to divide the 50gb partition into 2 parts and it wont let me.  The satus bar says "preparing to partition disk" for 30 minutes and it doesnt budge.
To make matters worse, I deleted that partition by clicking the minus sign on the lower right corner, and now that partition is completely greyed out.  When I try to press the plus sign to add in the remaining free space in my Vertex 3, it wont let me.  The satus bar says "preparing to partition disk" for 30 minutes again and it doesnt budge.
Does the 70gb raid partition in the Vertex 3 prevent disk utility from making further changes to the Vertex SSD?  I am pretty familiar with disk utility and know my way around it but I have my hands tied in this situation.  Please help!

    Things I've tried:
    1.  Booting from an extenral HD with Moutain Lion and trying to use DIsk Utility to make changes to the Vertex 3 partition, same thing occurs (it hangs for 30 minutes with no progress).
    2.  After I deleted the 50gb partition from the Vertex 3, it is now greyed out.  Now when I try to press the add sign in disk utility to add back that 50gb empty greyed out space to make it for free storage (choosing Mac OS Extended, journaled), SAME THING HAPPENS.
It seems as though once I deleted that partition from the Vertex 3, that 50gb space is now totally unuseable!
By the way, I dont have filevault activated if that info helps at all to diagnose it.

  • 10.4.11 Installed -Safari Crashes, Disk Utility Won't Open

Installed 10.4.11 yesterday via software update on our 2.0GHz Core Duo Macbook Pro.
After installing Safari crashes seconds after opening (it freezes then crashes) and then I downloaded the 10.4.11 update from Apples website (using firefox) but Disk Utility won't open it. If I try and launch disk utility myself it just bounces in the dock once and closes. Please help!

Same here - two identical iBook G4's, both updated to 10.4.11 - one is fine and everything works, the other one has the following problems: safari crashes 100% of the time, USB devices are failing to be recognised (mouse, storage key etc).
Looking in /var/log/system there is an error message saying a previous version of a kernel module is already loaded (cant get to the original error message text sorry!).
Looking on other forums looked like a simple 'trash the cache' fix - which I did - and hey presto the usb devices started working - but not safari. Messing around trying to flush out a safari cache failed after a few attempt, as did fixing file perms, zapping PRAM, booting from open firmware, and all the other usual things mentioned in the forums.
As it happens the iBook has nothing precious on it - so though to reinstall from the original installation disk. iBook G4 specific OSX Tiger distribution disk 1 inserted, but iBook now refuses to boot from it - holding down the c key on reboot just pops up a blue screen with a folder icon on it and an alternating finder and question mark logo - as in 'error I can't find a system on this installation disk' - the iBook then boots from the internal disk - getting nowhere fast.
Out come the Leopard install disks, and iBook quite happily boots from there and is right now doing a clean install from them (like I said nothing precious on there and thats why I cant get to the original error message...).
I've seen lots of posts about folks struggling to boot from the original install disks recently - wondering if patch 11 did something to knock the OSX version number on the machine greater than the version on the shipped G4 install disks??
And there is something very odd about patch 11 that seems to have hit this iBook and not my other one - they both installed fine, they have identical software apps on them and they are both the same spec.
Can't help more than this - but given I've seen these issues raised in several places worth adding to the thread.

  • Multiple app crashes, disk utility has no First AId tab

My Apple apps are almost all crashing; Mail, Ical,System Profiler, iChat, and when I try to repair permissions, Disk Utility loks very different and only gives me a screen to restore a disk - no First Aid, in fact no tabs at all.
I verified the disk using my install dvd - it saw no problems.
Before this happened, I installed Journaler, repaired permissions and also backed up to an external drive - initially using Silverkeeper 1.2. When that said system error, I realized it was not the latest version. 1.3 ran fine. Then I (stupidly) used Macjanitor to do clean up. I see now that there is a more recent version of that too. Have I cleaned out some essential file?
I am reading the link on xlab about multiple app crashes and searching the archives here - any help would be deeply appreciated!
    Phoebe

It was a classic mistake - I did a backup after the update, and had a setting in Silverkeeper that copied more recent files BACK to the computer from the external drive. Dumb Dumb Dumb... Since parts of my 10.3 System and Apps were more recent than the out of the box Tiger Dvd, I then had a mix of 10.3 and 10.4 trying to work together. Big mess, glad I figured it out. Did a clean install of Tiger, then added all my files from the backup.

  • Repeated crashes, disk utility says disk is fine

My Macbook Pro (2007-era?), running Snow Leopard, has been suffering frequent crashes for the past several months.  There appears to be no consistent trigger, but I will suddenly get the down-from-the-top screen of death that tells me I need to press and hold the power button to turn it off.  When it starts up again, the problem appears to have something to do with spinlocks and mutex'es.  I have tried repairing disk permissions, but that doesn't work.  Interestingly, if I repair disk permissions twice in a row, the second time still reports that it is changing permissions.  When I run "check disk" from the disk utility, it says my disk is fine.  Even booting from the startup disk and running "repair disk" reports that the disk is fine.  Any ideas?
Side note 1:  The battery no longer works correctly, so if the power cord is unplugged the computer runs for a minute or two and then shuts off unexpectedly.  I attempt to avoid this, and when it does happen I immediately repair disk permissions.
Side note 2:  I have MATLAB R2010b installed, and this often crashes itself, reporting a segmentation fault.  The MATLAB crashes and system crashes do not appear temporally correlated, and the system will crash even when MATLAB is not running.  Deleting and reinstalling MATLAB does not solve the problem.
    Thanks for any help!

    Sample crash report:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x226ec0): "thread_invoke: preemption_level -1, possible cause: unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.15.3/osfmk/kern/sched_prim.c:1471

  • HELP!!!  Disk Utility problems

So I ran Disk Utility after installing leopard and i am getting this problem:

    Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 173300 instead of 173299)
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I ran disk utility on tiger before i upgraded and had no issues with my drive. What's going on and how can I fix it?
I was also on hold with Apple for and hour and forty minutes. Then I got hung up on. I called back and I got the "In order to give you the help you need, you will need to speak to one of our Agents. Since none of our representatives are availble, you'll have to call us back later. Thank you for calling Apple. Goodbye." I guess I won't be getting any help there so if anyone has any infor that might help please share!

    Try this
Boot holding down Apple/S and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
    *fsck -fy*
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - _run the command again and keep doing so_ (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
    reboot

  • Disk Utility wont startup

I'm trying to start Disk Utility (under mac os 10.4.8, intel) but it wont startup. It bounces one time in the dock and then dissapers.
I tried a copy of an other computer, but the same problem. I Repaired Permissions in the terminal. I've reset my P ram.
This didn't work at all. Anyone an idea?

    Wow, that's not good.
The first four bytes of a "Universal" Mach-O loadable object and/or executable should be (in hexadecimal representation, which is what the "0x" prefix signifies):
    <pre>0xCAFEBABE</pre>
but instead, it's saying that the first four bytes are:
    <pre>0xCC8B45D0</pre>
In other words, the internal data of the file has been altered or is otherwise incorrect so that it's unusable.
Before doing anything else, I would, if you haven't already done so, startup from your Install DVD/CD and use Disk Utility to make sure your disk directory checks out okay. Use the Verify/Repair Disk buttons to do this. How to repair this problem short of an Archive and Install is a bit tricky.
What exactly did you try copying from another Mac? That could work, but you need to make sure that you only copy it from a Mac of the same architecture: Intel-Mac to an Intel-Mac and PowerPC to a PowerPC Mac. Note that the Disk Utility application itself is most likely fine, there's no need to copy that. What you want to copy is the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/. Copy that "DiskImages.framework" folder from another Intel-based Mac and put it into the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ folder on your (damaged) Mac. Replace the existing copy. (You'll need to click the "Authenticate" button to enter your password in order to accomplish this). Then try launching Disk Utility to see if it will launch successfully.
    Hope this helps....

  • Disk Util wont read my .dmg backup

    Hello,
Because I changed my hard drive, I thought it was wise to partition the new one with Disk Utility so it would have two partitions so I could just make a .dmg from the Mac OS parition and the Bootcamp partition over to the new ones.
While it worked for the Mac OS one, it didnt for the Bootcamp one and I couldnt boot Windows XP anymore.
When I asked the Bootcamp Assistant to setup my system it said it wasn't happy with my partitions and need a GUID disk.
Since mine was in AFM, I had to erase everything on it and put it in GUID with a single partition.
Now, before doing this I had Disk Utility erase the second partition I did on the new drive, make the Mac OS partition the whole disk and used Disk Utility to make a .dmg backup of the drive.
Since I formatted in GUID with a single partition, Disk Utility decided it doesn't like my .dmg backup anymore.
I reinstalled OS X Leopard from scratch and tried to mount it but it says no valid filesystem inside.
I tried to raw copy it with dd in terminal on a USB disk but same thing, it won't mount the drive.
When I use the restore function in Disk Utility, it says error 254 cannot validate filesystem.
I used it once successfully to check it before erasing the master drive and now the backup won't work anymore.
I am very upset, this 90 gigs backup contains all my photos, music and files.
    Thanks for your help!
    Pierre

I had a 320Gb drive with OS X on one partition and XP on another.
I bought a 500Gb drive, I thought I could do the same 2 partitions and just copy over the OS X and XP partitions to have everything work like before.
But it didnt work so now I have a .dmg containing my original OS X partition that I would like to copy over to the new HDD but it wont work as the dmg has not filesystem in it according to Disk Utility and gives an error 254 when I try to use it with the restore function.
However, I used this very same dmg file once yesterday to restore the drive. It was fine except that the new drive wasnt set to be a GUID drive so it would only boot so far but won't get into Leopard, hanging one line before launching the login app (I have the boot sequence set as verbose so I could see where it hung).
And now the same dmg file isn't working anymore on the GUID formatted 500Gb drive.

  • Disk utility wont format external drive

    Hi all
I have a friends 1 TB toshiba external drive, purchased at office works. I am trying to format it for NTFS so he can use it to watch the movies he is copying on any machine, xbox etc..
using disk utility I am erasing the 1tb drive with the NTFS format option, then I am creating the partition with NTFS but after formatting, it is only allowing me to read. I have tried formating the hard drive with Mac OSX journaled and then creating the partition at 1tb with NTFS, but getting the same issue.
I am a little confused as I just did the same thing with my 2TB drive I purchased from Office works as well.
    any ideas?
    bret

Hi Bret.  I am not sure I fully understand the details of your problem - the mention of another drive (the 2TB one) confused me a little.  I'll try to help though because it doesn't look like anyone has had a chance to reply to your question yet.
As far as I can see, OS X doesn't write to NTFS formatted drives by default.  It appears you can enable it by altering the mount options, e.g. http://learnaholic.me/2013/11/11/enable-ntfs-write-on-mac-os-x-mavericks/
Alternatively, perhaps just formatting it as FAT32 would achieve your aim - although now that I check, it doesn't really look suitable as it has a 4GB file size limit and some of the movies could be over that.
    Hope that helps.

  • External drive crash, disk utility unable to repair

I have a 250GB LaCie external disk. I use it to store files that I use with Final Cut. Unfortunately I had a Final Cut crash while the disk was running (or maybe it was the external disk that crashed). This has caused my disk to cease operation. Mac OS recognises it and suggests a repair but disk utility cannot repair it. Is there a way I can recover any of the files from the external disk?

  • Disk Utility wont allow me to check off "Master Boot Record"

Today I purchased a new Toshiba 3tb external harddrive, I am setting it up for use with both mac and windows however when i plugged it into my macbook (OsX 10.8) it came up as "Read-Only" So when attempting to format it in DU I continuously got an error saying "Invalid Request" I read around online and found an article which I thought was going to help me, which it partially did. I went into the partition tab options and changed it from MBR to GUID but now it doesn't show up properly in Windows without formatting it and when I try that it just goes right back to being Read Only for mac, is there any way to set it back to MBR or a go around to allow me to read and write on both systems?

The drive is setup as NTFS which is read-only to OS X. Do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT32.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Alternatively, you can purchase third-party software that enables OS X to both read and write to an NTFS formatted drive:
    NTFS for Mac 10.0.2
    Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.6
