Help:My MBP died. Does it pay to fix it?

My mid-2009 13" MBP died the other day. Was stuck on grey startup with circle and slash through it ( like international no sign that you would see for smoking but in grey). After posting about it all were in agreement that my Hard Drive was probably the issue. Received my new Crucial SSD today. Installed it no issue. Formatted it no issue. Tried to restore from Time Capsule and was told that my backup was corrupted. Not too worried as I had everything backed up and had the disc for the 10.5. Leopard that originally came with the computer. Thought I would install the OSX then go through the process of upgrading and installing everything else.
I had just successfully completed the new installation of the OSX (absolutely no issues). I then received an error message and the machine shut down with the darkening curtain coming in top to bottom. Now, it will power on to the Apple logo but no spinning time clock below. Cannot boot to recovery by Command-r.
Thoughts about what could be wrong? Seems like an issue bigger than my hard drive. Does it pay to put money into this computer at this point? I am sure just having someone diagnose the issue will be several hundred dollars.
Thanks for all your thoughts.

First off you installed 10.5 on a machine that the firmware has been changed.
Believe it or not, you could have installed 10.6 from the disk too, it's a full OS X 10.6.3 minus the free iLife, just hold the option key to boot from it. This would have been better as 10.5 has been mothballed basically.
You can extract your free iLife from the 10.5 disks with Pacifist from CharlesSoft.
Thought I would install the OSX then go through the process of upgrading and installing everything else.
Does this mean you installed 10.5, then upgraded to 10.6, then upgraded to 10.7?
I then received an error message and the machine shut down with the darkening curtain coming in top to bottom.
That's a kernel panic. Could have come from third party software (if you installed it), or else it's bad OS X install somewhere along the line.

Command r "Recovery Partition" only works in 10.7 and 10.8, so if 10.7 didn't get installed, you don't have one as it's a new boot drive.
If you only got 10.5 on that machine it could be because 10.5's time there was no SSD's.
You need to use the 10.6.3 disk, erase the entire drive and format OS X Extended Journaled, install 10.6.3 and Software Update to 10.6.8. before doing 10.7 or 10.8.

BTW Apple can't help you as it's your SSD. If you want them to take care of it, remove the SSD and have them place their own new hard drive in there, test the machine and install 10.7 or 10.8, then if the machine is fine, take it home and use Carbon Copy Cloner with SATA to USB adapter, erase and clone to the SSD and try that.
Also because SSD;'s are rather new, there might be some more tricks like enabling TRIM etc. on them or it could be a problem with that particular SSD and Macs.
See MacOwnersSupportGroup, they have more experience with SSD's.

  • Does it pay to upgarde my MBP

    Hi,
I have a MacBook pro. One of the early Core 2 duo models. 2.16 core 2 duo. Does it pay at all to sell this and upgrade? What do do you think it would be worth?
IT is a 15" model excellent condition matte screen.

Not knowing what you do with your MBP it's hard to say. Rather than go up and back with you asking questions why not just state what you need it for, what programs you run and what makes you think that a new model would be that much better.

  • My (Snowleopard) MBP died, but I had it backed up externally with TimeMachine. I bought an Air and used Migration Assistant which worked to bring the data over.  However, I've now got two versions of "me" on Air - I only want one with all my info. Help!

I know it's generally recommended (if you're going to bring data from one machine to another) to update the OS on the source computer before transfer.  However, my MBP died unexpectedly and my information was backed up with TimeMachine in SnowLeopard.  The Air I bought as a replacement runs Lion.
I was able to use Migation Assistant to bring my info/programs/etc over...but I've now got the user set up initially (in store) with Lion when I made the purchase - and I now have a second "persona" that contains all of my backed up information from the time capsule.
Given that the Airs have (relatively speaking) smaller amounts of memory, and that I dont' want to be bouncing back and fourth between profiles, I'm wondering if it's safe to delete the "new user profile" (ie the one set up via Lion while in store) and just use and keep the "me" I brought in from the time capsule.
I've never updated a MacOS before - let alone under these circumstances, so I've got a fair amount of trepidation around the whole process.
What is the best way to wind up with one user profile, keeping all the information from my old machine and deleting anything superfluous as part of a secondary profile?
Thanks in advance for any input you can provide surrounding this process!

    Thank you!
I can't tell you how terrified I was when deleting the superfluous account...but it went just swimmingly!

If you were instructed to call them, then that's what you should do. They will probably need to verify your identity before helping you with the security question.

Does the iPod connect to other networks?
If you restored to factory settings/new iPod and still does not connect to any network that indicates a hardware problem.
If you only can't connect to your network that indicates a problem with your network.

Doesn't sound like it.  It sounds like you're being logged-off.
Does your Mac go through the complete Restart cycle -- black screen, gray and/or blue screen momentarily, startup chime, etc?
If you're not sure, do a Restart just to watch the process; the next time the problem occurs, see if it's the same.
You need to know which it is, as these will have very different causes, and different places to look for a solution.

  • 13" MBP died. Only a black blank screen and blinking lights are visible. Any ideas??

My friends MBP died the other night.  He put it on sleep mode one night and the following morning, and when he went to turn it on the following morning it would't.  Only a black blank screen and blinking lights.  There is no sound or anything.  BTW it is a mid-2010 MBP, no added hardware, everything stock. It wasn't custom configured, and I believe he upgraded to Lion earlier this year.  I read somewhere that depending how quickly the lights are blinking could indicate a specific problem.  Is this true? He is planning on taking it an Apple store, but figured we would try here first since it is a bit of a drive, and the warranty has expired. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  We are just trying to get an idea of what we are dealing with. Thank you!

    Looks like hardware problem.
Apple can fix it. Take it to Apple as soon as possible.

  • How does one pay their bill

I have been a Verizon wireless customer for10+ years and switched to FIOS internet and TV a few years ago.  When I first switched I set up the one bill account, where it then took me over 8 hours on the phone to finally get FIOS and wireless Verizon to acknowledge each other exists.  All went well until thismonth's billing cycle.  When I went to log into my account, the system decided to make things more convenient for me by no longer taking my old user ID and password, but giving me the opportunity to get a new user name and password.  All I needed to do was enter my home phone land line number, which I don't have a land line, or my account number with the new user ID which I can't get because I can't log in to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.  After spending over an hour on the phone listening to the electronically generated drone of the voice telling me all agents were busy, mind you this was starting at 8:45, 15 min prior to the go time, and listening to the wail of the Kenny G music, the agent told me that it wasn't their department.  After another 40+ minutes of aural torture, I gave up, went out and shot several furry creatures and contemplated the meaning of life.  How does one pay their bill under these circumstances?  I even tried to use the 969 phony home phone  number they gave me.  What are my options and yes, in one month I will be canceling anything to do with Verizon TV and internet.

Sorry you are having difficulty, an agent with access to your account will reach out to you directly by email, private message in the Forums and/or the billing telephone number on your Verizon account for more information to help you resolve your issue.

  • Mbp died

My MBP was bought in August 2012 and has been working great so far. Yesterday i turned my mbp off and everything was fine, battery level was 60%. Today i want to turn my mpb on but it won't go on. It does nothing. No sound, no lights, nothing. Even the battery indicator on the side doesn't do anything. When i connetc my adater on the mbp it gives a green light like the battery is full, and now the battery indicater works and gives me 4 dots but my mbp still does not go on. and on the side where my magsafe goes in it smells burned, a strange smell. I have no idea whats wrong. My mbp is 2 years old and i have never had a problem with it. Can someone help me please.

If that is the case, there is nothing you can do at home to fix it, and there isn't much we can say here other than to take it to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider as soon as you can.

  • Please Help!  MBP Won't Turn On... T_T

So, my beloved MBP (2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo) finally bit the dust after years of service. Today, after work, when I press the power button, the sleep light turns on and I hear the faint sound of hard disk activation for a second. The screen stays black and there is never a startup chime. I've changed the RAM and hooked it up to an external monitor, but the monitor gets no signal and the MBP still does not turn on (same symptoms). After I leave it like this for 30+ minutes, nothing changes, but the laptop does get warm.
So, is the motherboard dead? Please help!!!

Although the lack of a startup chime bodes of other things, it may well be worth taking in the computer with this Apple article in hand:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Your MBP has the nVidea 8600M GT chipset that is the subject of the Apple Repair Extension Program (REP) that the article details. Apple Stores and AASPs have a test gadget that will determine if the nVidea chipset has failed. If it has, the repair is free to you for a period of four years from date of purchase whether you have AppleCare or not. The repair consists of installing a new logic board.
As you are in NYC, there should be an Apple Store nearby.
If they determine the chipset has not failed, then you have the option of asking for a "Depot Repair." This is a flat fee service that pretty much fixes anything they find wrong as long as the case does not show evidence of damage. The fee is around US$300--much cheaper than a new computer. I do not know if the replaced DVD drive will negate your qualification for this service.
One late-breaking thought: if you use headphones, can you here the startup chimes?

  • In Final Cut Pro I was trying to move an Event Library from one hard drive to another as explained in the Help section.  After doing so, I received a message that my event is already open with the same identifier as the new one I just creat

In Final Cut Pro I was trying to move an Event Library from one hard drive to another as explained in the Help section.  After doing so, I received a message that my event is already open with the same identifier as the new one I just created on the new disk.  It says the second document cannot be opened and to move one of these documents out of your Final Cut Events folder.  It also says to avoid this problem, copy events from within Final Cut Pro, but that is what I did in the first place.  What should I do to avoid the double opening conflict?

What exactly are you doing and what version are you using with OS X 10.8?

  • Is there a way to get help even if I have to pay?  Haven't gotten help here

I haven't gotten help here on the question I posted...see below. Is there another source of help, even if I have to pay for it? thanks
I copied my iTunes folder to an external drive as a backup. (I suppose I should have "exported" it.) Then that computer's motherboard crashed. I have a new computer and have copied the iTunes files to the C drive. iTunes seems to find the music (3000 songs, etc) but my ratings, and playlists are missing. How can I restore them? ( I do have my IPOD with all the stuff on it.)
    Pleas help....thanks

There are applications that purport to retrieve playlist information from your iPod. I'd look for posts by Zevoneer.
For future reference, you need to copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the one with the music in it)when you back up. The ratings and playlists information are stored in the iTunes Libary file.
I believe the support contact information is all on the main support page. There is also a link, "Contact Us" at the bottom of this page.
    Best of luck.

If you are going to upgrade your harddisk, why not upgrade to SSD harddisk. You macbook pro supports SATA II SSD drives acccording to these Specs. SATA III is backward compatible with SATA II, so you can buy SATA III drive if you can't find SATA II drives.
Upgrading to SATA II SSD drive you give you super fast performence.
These are a few Segate SSD drives from amazon, that are not that expensive, I guess.
As for Western Digital vs Segate comparison, I second clintonfrombirmingham's suggestion. Western Digital never works for me.
    *** After the harddisk upgrade
    Install latest OS if possible
