Help, my PowerBook G4 doesn't start...any suggestions?

I'm having trouble starting my Powerbook, and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for starting the computer, or consolation if there is no hope.
Every time when I try to turn the computer on:
-The LED on the power cord blinks/turns green
-The computer makes the turn-on chime
-I get the "You need to restart your computer...." screen (which i've discovered is kernel panic)
-the front LED doesn't light up, blink, etc
Occasionally, but not always:
-I get the one beep when I turn on the computer, signifying no RAM detected
-The first few times I tried turning it on it didn't finish the chiming beginning sound (but now it does)
What I've tried:
-Turning on the computer in safe mode
-Zapping the PRAM
-The wait and try again method
-Looking for the hardware test CD. (It is currently among the missing, my computer is from 2003, and I have access to later versions, would they work?)
Other facts of note and possible relevance:
-My computer has been acting strange for the past few months; setting its clock back to 1969 when I turn the computer off, randomly setting the default language to Greek, etc.
-About a month ago the computer suffered a fall, causing a dent and the battery to be not removable my the usual methods. Otherwise the computer's functioning seemed the same.
Any words of advise/possible diagnoses are appreciated!

The article What’s a kernel panic explains a bit more, the phenomenon you have been experiencing.
Kernel panics can be either software based or hardware based. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Resolving Kernel Panics has an excellent approach to dealing with your issue. Since you suspect RAM, I would pull the RAM module in the user serviceable slot and see if that makes a difference. If the RAM is not the culprit, and all it may need is reseating, since the jolt of the fall may have dislodged it from being securely seated, then you will need to look elsewhere. Next, boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer and run all tests in a loop by holding down Command + L during the tests. Report back on your findings.
To test software/directory issues run Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back with what you find during these procedures.

    iDVD doesn't start any more.
    On the 20th of March my iDVD 4.0.1 worked as well as allways but on the 21/3 it any longer did not start. I tryed starting it from iMovie such as I used it on the 20/3 and it does not start either.
    I ask if it can to be an acceptable attempt of solution, to drag the aplicacion iDVD into the wastebasket, to install it again from the cd's that come with the computer and finally to update it with the revision 4.0.1
    Can be any relation with the version of QuickTime?

    If it were me, I would downgrade QT from v7 back to v6.x.x as that is the stable version to use with OS 10.3.9.
    In addition, I would run the list of maintenance applications found in this post (or ones like them)...

    Thank you both for your responses! I watched a video on how to remove the hard drive - special tork(?) screwdriver and too many steps for me to feel confident about doing it myself, so I took the computer to an Apple Store - and thank God, the hard drive appeared undamaged - they are transferring the data to a new Macbook Pro. The loss of data was the scariest part, so I am breathing again!
    The laptop was three years old, I was hoping for another year or so before upgrading, but such is life. I appreciate your upfront advice.

    Not sure what adapter cable you have but if your new machine is a mid 2011 iMac you need this cable. Not a replica of the cable you need the adapter cable Apple sells:

    What happens when you try?  Do you get an error message.
    disconnect from the wifi and try on cellular data, if you can access the apps, then the problems lies with your router.

  • I set my Thunderbird email account settings to get email automatically but it doesn't. Any suggestions?

    I want to leave my Thunderbird email program open on my laptop during my work day and have my email downloaded automatically and a audible alert sound to let me know I have new mail. I have set my account settings so that this should happen, but it doesn't. I also tried setting in account settings for it to download once per minute, and it didn't. Any suggestions why this might be happening and what I can do to make it work?

    Set your auto check to 15 minutes and see it work correctly. If you want mail frequency less that that stop using pp mail and use IMAP and then only on servers that support Push mail.
    A setting of 1 minute is simply not going to work and is really only available for those who are connected to their own on site server via a fibre cable.
    Ultimately remember that email is not SMS or IM, It is email and it arrives when it does and most certainly not immediately.

    I have no idea what happened to it. I took it to Hungary where I used it for a year. Everything was fine until I moved back home.
    Now, when I try to turn it on, it beeps 3X, the sleep light on the front is constantly on, blinking 4X occasionally, the screen is black, and nothing else happens.
    The only thing I did with it was move it around a bit since security at London Heathrow was a disaster. What’s the matter with it? Thanks for any help!

    Same exact thing happened to me. After about an hour on the phone with Apple Care (they had me reset the PMU and PRAM, but did not instruct me to reset the RAM card), I was told that it might be that the RAM card is defective, so I should try having it replaced. I had it replaced by a certified apple technician (my 512 MB card was removed and replaced with a 128 MB card that I had not been using), and I was told that it was working again. When I brought it home, it worked for a few minutes, then the computer froze completely and would not respond. I had to do a force quit and restart, and when it started up the same thing happened all over again with the black screen followed by 3 beeping sounds and a blinking activity light (4x repeatedly).
    I was told by Apple that if changing the RAM card did not solve the problem, it may have something to do with the logic board. I hope this is not the case, and I will have to wait until Tuesday to speak with the technician who did the original RAM card replacement.
    I have not tried doing the steps recommended in the first reply in the order that was recommended. I wonder if I should try that on my own to see if that will help, or if it is better to wait and see what the technician recommends?? I would rather not have to wait til tuesday though!

  • Help ! Mac Mini doesn't start up !!!

    I have an Intel Dual Core Mac Mini, with Bootcamp. The 80GB hard drive is splited in 65 GB (Mac OS X), and 15 GB (Win SP2). Default partition OS X. Until yesterday it worked perfectly for 3 months.
    Problem: When I start up the Mini in OS X, normaly or choosing the OS X partion I just have the grey Apple and the turning wheel. However if I choose the Windows partition it works.
    Start up Atempts: I already tried starting up normaly, waited for more than 20 minutes, nothing. I also tried restarting form windows, nothing...
    I connected the Mini to a friend's iMac as a Firewire Hard Disk and all my files are there, so Im reluctant to reformat the entire disk without first trying to recover my partition.
    What was I doing before ? I was downloading (OS 10.4.7 Update) but it wasn't even installed since the conection broke, I removed Butler wich make hangout the start up for to long, and I worked a few minutes in other programs, and the shut down went somewhere else, when I came back some hours later there was just the Desktop and NOTHING else no way to do ANYTHING. I shut down and got stuck.
    If someone can help I would apreciate it !

    Normally I would suggest you startup from your install disk and run the Disk Utility. But, if you have access to another Mac and can attach your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode, that might work just as well. With your Mac mini connected, run the Disk Utility on the Mac mini's hard drive. Your files may still appear even if there is some file directory damage. At least with your friend's Mac you might be able to backup some of your important files if you do end up needing to erase and install...

I've got a startup problem with my hp laptop. it is a dv7 1175nr with 64 bits windows vista. the laptop suddenly went off yesterday while i was listening to music and on charge. on my first attempt to turn it on, it booted partially and went off again. on my second  attempt , a message came up on a black screen with startup options with one of them "startup repair(recommended)" . the computer went off immidiately after the message. the laptop no longer came on on every other attempt to turn it on. I observed that the ac adapter wasn't warm which made me to suspect it was a problem with the adapter. secondly, the LED beside the ac adapter port does not come on when adapter is connected to an ac supply. I really wonder if the problem is that my adapter got bad and the computer ran out of charge or that the computer its self has a problem. My worry is that the computer is just 11months old and I have just a few weeks to go for my waranty to expire. I intend to foward the problem to hp if it turns out to be a breakdown in the laptop system. I will be very grateful to read suggested diagnosis and solutions from you guys.

    From the symptoms that you have described it looks like it might a problem with the adaptor as its neither getting warm neither is the indicator light glowing. It might also be a problem with a blown battery. I would suggest you to call HP as the unit is still in warranty and you can have faulty part replaced for free.
