Boot your computer using the install disk (hold the C button while turning on the computer, with the install disk inside). Open Disk Utility and repair the disk and disk permissions.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Powerbook G4 Wont Start

My PB G4 wont startup. Tuttle on the G4 message board suggested I post here to see about some help. Disk Utility found nothing wrong, same with Hardware scan. I even reinstalled the OS 10.4.2 with no effect. The computer stalls at startup on the grey screen w/the apple and will go no further. Sadly that didn't do it.
The suggestion to perform the safe startup didn't work at all. It remained the same as ever: a blank grey screen. I waited for several minutes, then shut down and tried again.
When I started up in single user mode I was given a screen which was filled with "failed to load exrension com.apple.driver.AppleMacRiscPCI" with alot of junk in between.
It wouldn't let me enter any commands, at the end it repeats: "still waiting for root device"
    HELP!! Uh-oh...
    Thanks again,
    Antonio

    Let's start over.
10.3.9 was pre-installed and shipped with your Mac when purchased along with a 10.4 Upgrade install package?
Were you experiencing any problems with 10.3.9 prior to installing the 10.4 Upgrade?
You indicated that you re-installed 10.4.2. Was this the 10.4.2 Delta or Combo Update?
Do you maintain a backup of your hard drive data and if so, do you have a recent update?
The reason I ask, this may require re-initializing the hard drive or performing an Erase & Install (which erases the hard drive) using the 10.3.x install package that shipped with your Mac and then re-installing 10.4.

  • Help!,Powerbook Won't Start Up/No Power

My 15" Titanium Powerbook, 400mz will not power up, I hadn't used it in several months. I took it to a Mac software/network tech, who determined it was getting no power by connecting an adapter that has a green lighted ring on the plug, that did'nt light when plugged into mine, but lit up when pugged into his identical machine. After determining this, I received a pat on the back, a bill for $42.00, and he told me to go to the Apple Store in Durham, 45 minutes away.
I read in this forum that lack of use can cause the internal battery problems, but that unlit green plug suggests that it won't take a charge. Should I plug it in a wait anyway, try to take the battery out, Or should I just take it to the Apple Store? Thanks alot for any help.

Hi, Mark, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Sorry to hear about your accident.
I did drop the machine and haven't been able to start it up since.
This is sort of like saying, "Gee, I just can't understand it. My car was going fine until I drove it into that bridge abutment at 50MPH, but now it doesn't run worth a darn. What could be wrong?" You know perfectly well what the problem is, but you can't bear to acknowledge it.
In case there's enough left of your PB to benefit from a PMU reset, see this article for instructions. You'll need to know exactly which Powerbook model you have to locate the right directions for your PB.
Failing that, you're due for a trip to the repair shop if the PB still won't boot at all.

  • Need help now please. macbook wont start up

    I have a white macbook.
I was using it yesterday and the computer just shut off. I went to restart it and it does the chime, goes to the apple screen and just as the little circle under the apple spins, the laptop totally shuts down. it will not start.
I have tried to reset the pram and that didn't work. I just installed 10.6.4 yesterday....
Please help. I need the computer for work today.
    Thank you.

First thing to try, is booting from the restore DVD and installing a fresh copy of 10.6. If you're lucky, the 10.6.4 update just hosed your OS install, and a simple reinstall is all that's needed.
Once you've booted to the 10.6 installer, it couldn't hurt to run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu to verify the SMART status of the drive, and even run a repair disk operation on it.
If the SMART status is failed, or Disk Utility doesn't see the drive, then you're looking at a hardware failure. You'll need to take it somewhere to be fixed if it's under warranty, otherwise if you have some precision screwdrivers like a PH000 and Torx T4, you can replace the drive yourself with pretty much any 2.5" SATA drive.

  • Powerbook g4 wont start up

Went to turn on my 15inch powerbook g4 and it was just sitting at the blue screen. then after a minute it flashed black and the screen came back on with a blue screen and a picture of a folder with a flashing question mark and the finder icon.
I inserted my diskwarrior cd to try and fix the problem. Restarted the cpu and held down c button. Nothing happened. just the same folder with the ?
i have tried everything at startup.
Holding down all the different buttons i have read about.
I want to try and restart with the osx install discs but i cant get the diskwarrior cd out.
I have tried holding down the eject button
tried holding down the trackpad button at start up even tried to type in eject-disc in firmware. nothing will get the cd out.
Any suggestions so i can try and boot up with osx install disk?
Also everything worked fine the day before i.e. disc drive and hard drive
    Thanks

    HI,
back on with a blue screen and a picture of a folder with a flashing question mark and the finder icon.
Flashing question mark on boot indicates your Mac can't find a System Folder to boot from. Try booting while holding down the Option key which should prompt the Startup Manager window. You can then select the startup disk. If the PBook boots to the Desktop, move the DiskWarrior icon to the Trash. Hopefully that will eject that disk.
At this point, definitely boot from your install disc, run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairs.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you can't boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
You can verify the startup disk in Safe Mode, but not repair. Also, if you can't boot from your install disc, booting in Safe Mode you may be able to eject the DW disc.

  • HELP !! Computer wont start after i change from 133 to 166 on my FSB

    Hi...
I have a K7N2G. I changed the my fsb from 133 to 166. Afterward, I have not been able to start or boot my computer (my fans are on, but monitor is not geting any output).
Thank you and greatly appreciated to anyone that can help me.
    Yoge

Hahaha yoge i fell yr pain man cos i did the same thing 3 weeks ago!! I just got my computer back from the shop on Tuesday. What happened was i managed to kill some chip on the mother board and the chip had to be replaced.
    This is the story:
    Amd XP 2400+,
    MSI K7n2g-ilsr
    400watt coolermaster
USING THE ONBOARD VGA!!!! (im a dumb F**K, i noe this now)
dual channel 2*256mb sticks (transcend & Kingston value)
I had just installed the latest bios so the kinston is
      supported.
    High performance settings
    FSB/DRAM Ratio 1:1
The only values i had for the FSB were 100, 133 & 166Mhz so i put to 166, i pressed F10 to save and then black screen.
The power was on, the monitor was on, but the hard drive shut down shuted down. So i took a look at the back to check the 4 LED's, 1,3,4 were RED and 2 was GREEN which meant the memory module was damaged, or so it said in the manual.
Apparantly ur not supposed to overclock with the onboard VGA and it even says that in the manual (i must have skipped pass that, duh)
So yoge your gonna have to take ur computer back to the shop to get it fixed sorry to say.
I cost me $35 AUD + $55 for service charge but they oly charged me $35 for the sevice fee cos i am a regular customer.
Also when i got back my computer this week, i opened up the case and do u guys know what i found, a GeForce4 440MX graphic card!!! They gave me a free graphic card!! Woohoo
Well now my computer runs fine with no problems yet and my cpu runs at 25 degrees where as before it ran at 51 degrees.

  • HELP ! my ibook wont start after downloading 9.1 update

    Hi
i decided to update my os 9.0 on my old ibook, and downloaded all the updates that needed to be installed, i started off with installing the 9.04 update, and after that was installed i ran the 9.1 update, during the installation the system promted for a reboot, and after that my ibook locks up when the "loading" bar is in the middle in the starting screen,,, i dont have much mac xpereince, so i would realy apprrecieate any help !

    Hi, honkatped -
    Just happened to be around.
Okay - if it boots okay with Extensions Off, then it would appear you have an extensions conflict of some kind.
Re-installing the OS would not fix that. Instead, it will take a bit of work to find what is causing the problem - it may be an incompatibility with some 3rd-party software item.
First, restart - immediately hold down the Spacebar, keep it held down until Extensions Manager opens; it should do that just before extensions start to load (just before the march of icons across the screen starts).
Once Extensions Manager opens, select Mac OS Base from the Selected Set pulldown menu near the top of the Extensions Manager window. Then continue the startup.
If that boots okay, select Mac OS All as the Selected Set in Extensions Manager, and restart. If that boots okay, then some more work will be needed to isolate the offender. Let us know how it goes to that point.

  • Help! Macbook pro wont start!

So I have recently replaced my old HDD with the new Corsair 128GB SSD and everything was great. The installation was fast and it worked flawlessly.
One fine morning, it refuses to start. I press the power button and it would just start for 1 sec then turn off. I opened the macbook pro up and put back the old hdd just to see whether its the SSD but even then it wouldn't start up.
Any idea what could be wrong? I have double checked all the wires and everything which looks fine. Please help!

Insert the Applications DVD that came with the MacBook, press D key when your computer starts and run the extended test two times. If you haven't got a DVD, press D key when your computer starts

  • Help me please, Reader wont start!

Very wierd situation - Acrobat Reader would not start when I try to open a pdf file, instead heavy harddrive usage starts immediately, my PC hangs for some time and all of this goes on and on until I kill AcroRd32.exe process in Task Manager. After that heavy harddrive usage stops. This was going on with version 9 and recently I uninstalled it and installed Reader X hoping that this will solve the problem but the behaviour is exactly the same! I also have an old Reader version 5, that one still  works OK. But being old version I am constantly getting messages about new features that could be present in new pdf files.
Anybody has a clue what is going on with my Acrobat Reader X and how to fix it?

    Hi guys
My question has not been answered. But I've got some additional information. What I found out is that the problem is somehow linked to my local user profile! If I create another user and login as that user any version of Acrobat Reader starts up just fine. Also, if I login as myself but start Adobe Reader under another user using "Run as..." again it starts up no problem.
    What could be the problem?
    Cheers

  • [SOLVED] gParted wont start

I have Arch installed with KDE. I wanted to make some changes to my partiton table and thought of using gParted to get the work done.
    I installed gparted as:
    sudo pacman -S gparted
Now, when I try executing gparted form the GUI, I get the authentication window, where it asked for the user password. Upon entering it, nothing at all happens. gParted just wont start.
I tried running it from Konsole:
    sudo gparted /dev/sda
    I get an error as:
    No protocol specified
    (gpartedbin:2475): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
Please help identify why gParted wont start on my system.
