Help: My PowerBookG4 has gotten very slow

All of a sudden my PowerBook G4 has become very slow. I get lots of beachballs while it is thinking what to do. It takes 5 minutes to restart and sometimes 5-10 seconds just to open a folder (with a beachball while I wait). All apps are running slow. I have a 60 GB Hard drive with 6.5 GB free space. I just run repair permissions (nothing needed to be repaired) and I veriified the drive with HD utility and it said it is OK. Here is the info on my system:
Machine Name: PowerBook G4 12" Machine Model: PowerBook6,4;CPU Type:PowerPC G4 (1.1); Number Of CPUs: 1; CPU Speed:1.33 GHz; L2 Cache (per CPU):512 KB Memory: 768 MB; Bus Speed:167 MHz.

Esteban:
Your HDD space is pretty close to the minimum 10%, although I suspect that is not the issue. However, you might benefit from taking a look at Dr. Smoke's FAQ Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk and free up some space before it gets too full and you run into further difficulties.
Your RAM at 512 MB is a bit meager. Your RAM will max out at 1.25 GB. I suggest you boost it to at least 1 GB.
I am not sure what maintenance procedures you do regularly. I suspect that one of the issues is that your computer needs maintenance. Download and launch MacJanitor and run the daily, weekly, monthly tests.
Here are some article on maintenance procedures which have al lot of excellent suggestions and links to resources:

Please post back with update or further questions or comments.
Good luck.

  • My mini has gotten very slow in the last week or so.

My mini has gotten really slow at everything in the last week. Most of what I do is done on the internet and I use Foxfire 4. Can anyone tell me how to run a system check that might help find the problem? Does anyone know of a problem with Foxfire 4 that might be causing this since I just down loaded it about a week ago.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
On Foxfire, try using Safari or Opera and see if you have the same issue. You can also check the Foxfire site under support to see if any OS X issues have been reported.
How much unused disk space do you have? General rule is keep 10%+ unused for systems usage. Less than that can really slow the system down.
Some have found periodically using OnyX can help with performance. Download from http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php and run the tasks on the cleaning and maintenance tabs. Before using any disk maintenance software you should have important data backed up.
If you want, you can run the Apple hardware test to ensure you don't have a hardware problem. It's on one of the gray OS X disks that came with your system. Look for the 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert and reboot holding the D key down, or hold the alt/option key and choose the Apple hardware test when prompted. Choose the extended test.

  • My iMac has gotten very slow lately

    Hi!
    I have an iMac 21.5-inch, purchased August 2010.  OS X 10.8.5
Lately it is been running very slow.  I double-click on an image, and Preview takes 30 seconds to open it.
I have done some reading and ran the EtreCheck report.  I see there are some things in red, but i don't know what they mean, and how to fix.  Any help would be so useful to me!  Thanks!

    Hello,
I recommend you do the following steps to make your mac go faster:
upgrade to 8GB of ram, especially since you have 2 free RAM slots in your Mac (the ratio for in/out shows that your RAM is used between 5 and 10 times too much, because of lack of RAM.
try using a bigger external drive for you Time Capsule Backups (your iMac drive is 500GB, so i'd suggest at least 500GB)
your drive is currently 320GB and it is full, so every hour, the mac is deleting older backups to make room for the new, and this slows down the mac.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    James

  • Why does my system freeze after ever update from Firefox...and has gotten very slow

My computer freezes during or after every update that come in automatically recently. It has also gotten extremely slow at the same time.

Your setup looks like it should really fly.
Often when people have serious slowdowns like you mention, it comes down to one of two things:
    a) Some problem with the user's account. One way to test if this is the case is to create a new admin user and try running FCP X from this new account. If the same projects that were slow behave well in this account you'll know that some setting, or cache, or login item, or whatnot in your own account is responsible.
    b) Some problem with a plugin. If there is a plugin that you use all the time, and maybe was not updated for the current version, and can cause slowdowns, then maybe you think it is the machine. See what plugins you are using, and run a test project without them. Does it run as fast as it should?

  • Running pacman has gotten very slow

When using pacman the download session has slowed to a crawl a slow crawl. Does anybody have any suggestions. I'm using pacman 3.

    Edit the following files:
    /etc/pacman.d/current
    /etc/pacman.d/extra
    /etc/pacman.d/community
Find the line with ftp.archlinux.org and comment them out for now. That site is having issues.

  • When I key on a website it will not come up all the sudden and the search times out. It is usually a click on attachment and Firefox has gotten very slow.

For example, I opened my Citibank file and tried to open my Visa account and it would not open and then timed out. I tried to open from my email my college board account and it only timed out. I went to Internet Explorer and they opened. Is there a problem at Firefox?

@Steve_Clairman, if you are looking for the orange Firefox button (abbreviated menus), it will appear if you turn off the classic menu bar:

  • My Razr has gotten so slow to respond to everything Any suggestions?

My razr has gotten so slow responding to everything. Any suggestions?

The above solutions are a Good start a few things I'll add, this what i do to my Razr's to keep them in the shape they are.
    1. shut the phone down at night unless you need it on.. power it down and then in the morning re-power up this is a good re-fresher I do this Quite often.
    2. If you can run your Razr through a System Cache at least every other week if you have allot apps and and other things running on the phone it might not hurt running it once every week..
    3. If you have apps slowing down the phone I'd try running it in Safe Mode see how it performs with it in engaged if you find problematic if you have an excessive amount of apps as Ref. suggested remove them..
    4. Add this app to your Phone <> System Panel App it is available in Free or Paid form I've had the paid Version for 3 years now on 4 phones I wouldn't be with out it <> Info for the App <> http://goo.gl/1mgfp5  <> the included link share's some light on the app.
    5. During the Day if you use the phone in a heavy way, Like using your apps, Camera, Text , Emails things like that you can Hold the Home button for a seconds doing this will bring up what you used to remove it either brush to the Right <> Left and it will clear it..
    6. If you bought a stand for your Razr and you can take it to work with you use it and a charger at your Desk that can help keep it charged it I have one of these Stands or Pedestal it's supposed to be called To look at shots of my stand and my Charge cord that came with it.. Follow below..

Read and follow these Apple Knowledgebase guides in the order shown, to help determine what the cause might be. If nothing helps, please post a new question with your findings, explain the troubleshooting steps you took and their results, and be sure to include your system information (e.g. OS X 10.6.8 and MacBookAir3,1).

An SMC Reset might be justified, in the event you still experience inexplicably slow system performance.
Reset the SMC, then test your MacBook Air again.
    SMC reset:
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
