You can upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.5 will run under10.6. You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... To upgrade your iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.

Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion for $29 from the App Store if you have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

Move the domain.sites file from one computer to the other.
The file is located under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. Move this file to the same location on the other computer and double click and iWeb will open it. Remember, it is your User Library that you want and not your System Library, as you will not find iWeb there.
Just create a new site on the same domain file and it will appear below the other site. If you want them side by side then duplicate your domain file and have one site per a domain file and they can then be side by side. -

How can I upgrade my systems to Lion?
Obviously, I'm not the most Mac savvy person. I want Lion at the very least. I currently have two systems in my home. An iMac and a MacBook. We purchased the iMac in 2006 and we are still running Tiger on it. I purchased my MacBook in 2010 and I've been running Leopard on that. I know Lion has been out for a while, so it's time for us to finally upgrade. The Tiger version we're running on the iMac is version 10.4.11 and the version of Leopard on my Macbook is 10.6.8. The processor on the iMac is 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and the MacBook's processor is 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

We went to Best Buy today since we don't really have any Mac stores close to us, I don't really like going to our Best Buy for Mac advice so much but it was really my only choice besides asking online. When I asked about getting Mountain Lion, the employee said that when it comes to our iMac, we have to get Snow Leopard first, and then get Lion from there. I wasn't very clearly on that and he seemed to be rushing us, so I decided to come here and ask. All I want to do is upgrade both of our systems to at least Lion. If it's a good idea to get Mountain Lion too, we'll probably get it.Note to all - Apple has left you stranded re Mt. Lion and future upgrades if you were an early MacBook Pro adopter.
My Mac Book Pro will NOT run Mountain Lion. It was purchased in mid-December 2006.
I took the serial numbeer to the nearest Apple Store and they confirmed: DO NOT INSTALL MOUNTAIN LION ON THIS COMPUTER. This unit has adquate RAM and DISK but it has something to do with how Apple uses the processor - even though it is a core-duo dual processor Intel unit.
So early and semi-early adopters of Apple computers have been left high and dry without an upgrade path at this point. Only choice from here on out is to buy a new machine.

[SOLVED]Install kernel failed and how can I repair my system.
In order to get suspend function, I try to compile a new kernel, I used the second method in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … rom_Source with makepkg and pacman. I download 2.6.31 kernel and makepkg is OK, but pacman tell me /lib/***(lots of
files name) can not be overwritten. I'm not very happy, what make matter worse, I reboot my
system, it seems it lost some modules, it do not mount ext4 partition and can not find Ethernet.
I have lots of data in this system, I could not erase the hard disk and re-install the whole system. Is there a good way to repair my system?
my system have 5 partitions: /,/boot,/usr, /home, /var, I hope these partition can be all reserved as possible.

Last edited by netawater (2013-06-14 00:48:56)First off - you should _never_ use the default name when rolling your own kernel, _always_ give it a unique name! (this way, you can always go back to your previous, working kernel/modules) - by the way - have you tried booting the fallback kernel?
One safe way of keeping your own data - boot from a live cd/usb stick without involving the current OS at all. Then use an external usb-drive (hey - these days you can buy a 1TB usb drive for less than 100 bucks - it's a no-brainer!) and copy all the data you are concerned about to the usb-drive.
Once that is done you can start experimenting - or just plain and simple reinstall or try to reinstall the original kernel. If some of your partitions wont mount (private data), then remake to ext3 _after_ having backed it all up.
I have not looked at the wiki, but I'm sure there is some warning about kernel naming - at least I _know_ that subject has been discussed in this forum. -

For speed there are Seagate and Hitachi 100 GB 7200 RPM drives.
For size there are 5400 RPM drives with capacities up to 160 GB and 4200 RPM with a capacities up to 200 GB.
