Help! My T61 suddenly no longer recognizes my DVD-RAM drive!

Today I tried to retrieve some photos from a DVD and then a CD placed into my T61s DVD RAM (Mat**bleep**a UJ-852 ATA) ... and the drive was not recognized by the system.  It was not displayed in the "My Computer" listing.  The drive powered up whenever I insert a disk, but nothing else happened.
The device properties box says:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)
"Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
But when I check, the system replies came back that the proper driver was already installed ... and that there was nothing else out there that was a "solution".
What can solve this sudden problem?
Many thanks,
-- Mike in San Jose

Solved!
Go to Solution.

Thanks!  A variation of the latter seems to have worked and restored the DVD-RAM to proper working order:
1) Disable drive
2) Uninstall drive
3) Remove drive
4) Shutdown
5) Restart
6) Insert drive ... system recognized the drive, loaded the drivers and operation has been normal.
Thanks for the tip. (I had disabled and removed/inserted it before, with no success.  But until reading your note, I did not have a shutdown/restart in between.)

I installed Windows 7 and my Pavillion dv6500 no longer recognizes the CD/DVR drive.
It's not even in the device list!

    Hi:
What is the specific dv6500 model you have?  If you don't know, please look for the product code which is on the same sticker as the serial number and post it.
It is possible your notebook may need the chipset driver installed.

Have you tried all the ports?
Have you tried with a different cable?
Have you tested all the ports with other devices to see that they are functioning?
    Ciao.

Solved the problem by dumping my external HD onto another computer. Re-formatting and re-installing the data.  Not what I wanted to do but it solved the problem.

Use a data recovery product such as the ones listed here, and then get a replacement drive.

Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Do you mean the external hard drive is not mounted on the iMac desktop?
Check if Disk Utility sees the drive. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. If the external shows up in the left column, select it and click on Mount.
If it does show up this way, I recommend using DU to Repair Disk.

  • T60 HDD res. partition, USB ports and DVD-RAM drive no longer recognizing data/media!

I have a base installation of the IBM T60.. I made no modifications to the setup or configuration of how the HDD is structured nor have I downloaded and installed any strange drivers... only automatically downloaded drivers from Microsoft update and manually downloaded driver updates from the Lenovo website.
One day everything was working fine.  Next day, my USB devices, reserved partition (can't remember what this is called) and the DVD-RAM drive stopped working but power was still getting to these devices.
My DVD-RAM drive is seen as a DVD-RAM on first bootup.  When I insert a CD or DVD media in the drive, the Explorer tree changes DVD-RAM to CD-ROM in the Explorer (really strange).  It behaves like there is no media in the drive.  Cannot boot with that drive either.
In addition, I have external USB HDD and Flash drives as well.  None of them work on this T60 anymore.
When I plug in an external USB HDD or Flash drive, I get "not formatted" error message and a prompt to format my drives?!
I tested these USB external drives on a desktop machine and verified that they are working 100% fine.  So the problem has something to do with my IBM/Lenovo T60.
It almost seems like something broke on the motherboard perhaps?  I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates as well to no avail.  Please help.  Thanks in advance for your time and consideration of this issue.

  • LR 4 suddenly no longer recognizes files.

My LR 4 suddenly no longer recognized my memory cards. I am using the same cards and cameras but consisitently get the error message:"files not imported because the files could not be read. they are jpg and nef files...I am stuck without my workhorse! Any advice is helpful. This has never happened in 6 years

This error message means you don't have write permission to the destination folder (the folder where the files are going to be copied to). One reason this happens is that the folder has accidentally been changed in the Lightroom Import dialog box. Please check to see if the specified folder (perhaps different than the folder you had previously used) has WRITE permission and if not, change the permissions.

  • IMac, suddenly, no longer recognizes Cannon PowerShot SD750

For some odd reason my mac no longer recognizes my camera. It worked fine a week ago but when I plugged it in today, iPhoto doesn't automatically open and it doesn't even show up on my desktop. The only place where I can find it is in the system profiler, under the USB section. I tried repairing the permissions and restarting my mac and formatting the card in the digital camera but, so far, no success. All that happens when I plug the camera in is that the last photo viewed on the camera shows up on the camera's lcd display. This is pretty frustrating and any help would be highly appreciated.

I'm not sure that iPhoto's the problem - after all, Image Capture doesn't see the camera either, right?
    However, to re-install iPhoto
    First: *Back Up Your Library*
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applcations Folder to the trash)
    2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’

  • DV9000 No longer recognizes my CD-ROM drive

HI guys, I am by no means a computer guy, but I have been trying to figure out why my laptop no longer recognizes my CD drive.  It had the 3 yellow exclimation points in the devise manager, 2 for Base System Device and 1 for Coprocesser.  I updated the drivers which did get rid of the exclimation points, but now my CD drive is no longer listed in the Device manager.  I did an internet search and it says I need to delete the upper and lower filters, but when I go to the registy as I am instructed there are no listings for either one.  Someone suggersted I install a virtual drive so I downloaded magicdisc which did bring the CD-ROM entry back to the device manager but its only the one for magicdisc, my origanal drive is still not recognized.  I have tried everything and would really appreciate any help you can offer.  Thanks

    Hi:
You can try one of the resolution steps, 2, 3, 4, or 5.
One of those steps will normally resolve the problem.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
The other problem that could be specifically related to your dv9xxx model, is the fact that the motherboard is going out and picked just now to do so.
Some of the most common problems with the dv9xxx motherboards are the sudden and unexplainable disappearances of:
    Wireless
    Audio
    DVD drive
    Video
These problems are all related to the motherboard defects that were prevalent in this model, and the only resolution you would have would be to replace the motherboard (not recommended), or use an external USB DVD drive.

Since you haven't provided any helpful information all I can suggest is this:
Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. If the drive does not appear in DU's sidebar listing, then it most likely has died and needs to be replaced. Take it into Apple for service.

  • A505-S6005 No Longer Recognizes Disks in CD Drive

My A505-S6005 laptop no longer sees discs in the DVD/CD drive.  Explorer still shows the drive, Hardware Manager says the driver is current and that the device is working properly, but nothing I put into it is recognized or accessible.  I don't know if this is a Toshiba problem or a Windows 7 issue. Any suggestions?

    Looks like a hardware issue.
Can you try booting off a Boot CD or DVD.  Try going into windows in Safe mode.  This will help narrow down the problem.
    Good Luck,

  • IMac no longer recognizes my DVD player after upgrading to DVD Player 4.6

    Hi,
Several days ago I upgraded to Tiger and then 2 days ago, through "software update" I upgraded to 10.4.3 and also upgraded to DVD Player 4.6
I just discovered that my computer no longer sees the DVD player and an inserted DVD doesn't show up anywhere (when I check under "Hardware" and then "Disc Burning" under "About This Mac" it says "No burning device was found."
I tried reinstalling the upgrade (DVD Player 4.6) but it says it can't because there's no valid DVD player in the system (my computer has a Superdrive and I've played and burned DVD's a plenty in the past several months).
Any help/info will be GREATLY appreciated!!

  • My late 2008 Mac Pro no longer recognizes my DVD Player/Recorder.

It stopped working properly after I installed one of the later Snow Leopard updates.  When I insert a blank DVD I don't get the icon on the desktop that I used to get.  It seems to recognize music CDs, however.  I can't record to CD or DVD.  Has anyone had this problem that might be able to tell me how to fix it.  I could just purchase a new "SuperDrive" online, but I'm afraid its an OS problem and not the hardware itself.  I figured I would install Lion and that would fix it, but it didn't.  Any help would be appreciated.

well, you could try using one of those brush type cleaning dvd things, or blasting the lens with compressed air. If that doesn't work, you may have to shut your Mac Pro down, take the side panel  off,  disconnect the power cord, get in there, disconnect the power and data cable from the dvd drive, wiggle it out, take off the top cover of the dvd drive, clean the lens with a cotton swab and some pure isopropyl alcohol, clean out any dust and crud in there, put the top cover of the dvd drive back, wiggle the drive back in, reinstall the data and power cables, put the side panel back on, then reboot your Mac. Failing that, repair permissions. Your drive may also be toast, especially if you've been using it a lot. Did you know you can pretty much use any ATAPI dvd burning drive in your mac? it's true. I put a lite-on dvd drive from a pc that was about to fail into my mac pro's 2nd dvd drive cage, set both drives to cable select and it worked fine-just like that
    hope that helped

  • Drive no longer recognizes blank DVD's since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard

Hello, I have an issue with my Super Drive (the UJ-875). Since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard, the drive no longer recognizes any blank media in it. I've tried -R, +R, -RW and +RW. No dice. The discs can be put in the drive and ejected without issue, it's just they are never displayed in Finder or Disk Utility. When I try to burn a mounted disc image, it simply sits there saying "To begin, insert a blank disc". I've tried using the exact same spindle of blank TDK -R's that I was using before I upgraded the O.S. I also tried some blank Sony media and it doesn't recognize it. It should be noted that the drive doesn't seem to have any issue with previously recorded discs. Those appear to read just fine, it's only blank media that looks like the issue. Any answers you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Below is the Disc Burning information that's displayed in About This Mac:
