HELP! nano frozen in lock mode

Hi there,
While listening to my nano yesterday, as always I put it on hold to save power, and I accidentally dropped it on the floor face-down. Since then, the click wheel has been frozen in lock mode and is unresponsive. I have tried toggling the hold button back and forth many times, as well as trying to restart my ipod, in addition to letting it play until the point the battery dies and then connecting it to power (I read this may help?), all to no avail.
Are there any ideas as to how to solve this problem? Will this problem just stop on its own?
Please help! Thanks in advance.

Update: I just went upstairs to try the hold switch again, and I had this thought: this whole problem started when I dropped my iPod while it was on hold, so why can't I drop it again? So I smacked it (when I say smack, I really mean a little harder than a tap) a couple times on a hard surface and guess what? It works again! I'm sure this didn't solve the problem long-term and that I will need to get it repaired in the near future, but for now my problem is solved! I'm kind of afraid to touch the hold button now, though.
I might still send it in for repair just to avoid this happening again in the future, but only if it happens again in the next couple days/weeks.

  • Ipod frozen on lock mode

My ipod is frozen on lock mode and i have a big flight in a few hours what do i do??  My computer won't even reconize when my ipod is plugged in and neither does my ipod.

Important: If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, it may be because iPod is paused or the Hold switch is in the locked position. If so, a lock symbol appears on the screen. Slide the Hold switch to the unlocked position and check the screen.
If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, the steps to reset it vary by model. You can easily tell which iPod model you have if you're not sure.
Products AffectediPod nano, iPod mini, iPod
To reset an iPod with a Click Wheel, including:
    iPod nano (4th generation)
    iPod nano (3rd generation)
    iPod nano (2nd generation)
    iPod nano
    iPod classic iPod (5th generation)
iPod with color display (iPod photo)
    iPod (Click Wheel)
    iPod mini
    iPod mini (2nd generation)
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
To reset iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector)
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons simultaneously until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
If you are still unable to reset your iPod, use only one finger from one hand to press the Center (Select) button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Menu button.
When you reset iPod all your music and files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. Date and time are preserved (unless the iPod reset itself because it had no power and then was reconnected to power). Other customized settings, such as Bookmarks, On-The-Go Playlists, Shuffle, Backlight timer, and so forth are preserved from the last time the hard drive turned on.
    To reset iPod shuffle:
Disconnect iPod shuffle from the computer (if connected).
Move the switch on the iPod shuffle to the OFF position.
Tip: When iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible.
    Wait 5 seconds.
Move the switch to the play in order or the shuffle position. The green stripe will be visible in either position. For iPod shuffle (2nd generation), slide the power switch on (and you can see the green stripe).

  • Nano Frozen in Lock (hold) Mode

Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this - I'm new to this. Anyway-
My ipod nano is frozen. I know how to restart it normally; but the problem is that it's locked in off.
    - I turned it off then locked it.
    - I unlocked it and it wouldn't turn on.
    - I tried to restart several times but got nothing.
    - I plugged it into a charger and it comes on but you can't do anything since it's still locked.
    - I tried switching the lock on and off but it was still stuck on lock.
    - When I unplug the charger from the Nano it goes right back to off.
    HELP!!!

  • Nano 3g frozen in locked mode

Today while trying to update my music my Ipod froze. I tried to lock and unlock it. Now it is stuck in pause mode with the lock icon on the screen. I can't get it to unlock, play, turn off, nothing. It is stuck on and completely unresponsive. Any Ideas?

That would be great if the unlock button responded.
I have a frozen display, unlocking does not enable the buttons to allow reset and it will not mount.
And I have study material in it for my exam later this week...annoying but I can get other copies.
I think I will have to wait for the battery to go flat - the screen is still on so I hope this only takes a day or two.

  • Nano frozen in lock

My Nano is stuck in lock; it is all lit up and looks like it wants to work, but nothing happens. Have tried unlocking - it seems like the switch may not be making contact! Nothing shows up when I plug into the wall AND when I plug into the computer. It worked 2 weeks ago...now nothing. Help! Please???

okay i just read a couple more posts and i actually fixed it, so if you're having the same problem as me, maybe this will work.
"Have you tried resetting your iPod? Go ahead and try it again, just to make sure that you're doing it the correct way:
First, toggle your iPod's "Hold" switch back and forth a couple of times. (leave it on the white side of the switch area, which is the Off position)
Then, press and hold the Menu and Select (center) buttons together for 5-10 seconds.
You might need to try this quite a few times. For more effect, try connecting your iPod to a power source while you reset it."
I did that and it shut off, then turned back on, and now it works fine.
    Good Luck!
    Hope it works for you!

  • Nano frozen in locked position

My nano is frozen in the locked position, therefore I cannot reset it. I have seen this question but no real answers. Should I just return the nano?

I bought my Son the Nano 4gb; anyway after about 1 week it completely froze. So I brought it to the Apple Store and they hooked it up to their computer and reset it; loosing everything of course but at least it was working. They also said if it kept happening to come in and return it. Now this morning it happened again; I tried numerous things and none of them seemed to work. I wanted to try plugging it in directly to the Wall adaptor. So as I am walking around the house looking for where my Son might have put the Wall Adapter it all of a sudden went on; I don't know if it's from the warmth of my hand or maybe my hand was squeezing something for a while; I am not really sure. One thing I did notice though is that both times that this freeze happened it was raining for days on end; so maybe it's sensitive to Humidity.
After doing a lot of research online this Freeze Problem seems to be a big issue with the Nano. And the Apple Store knew what to do right away like they were used to doing it. If there's a Bug with the Nano then Apple should fix it and recall it; replacing it with New Nano's.

  • HELP: Ipod frozen in diagnostic mode, "hpdetect hp fail"

Hi there - any help on this would be highly appreciated - my ipod began displaying the "unhappy ipod" sign and when I plugged it in to my computer, windows said it had malfunctioned and needed resetting. I tried resetting it manually (menu and select) and then by fluke managed to enter diagnostic mode. Tried going into reset, but it didn't appear to do anything, went into HP TEST, and it came up as HPDETECT HP FAIL, and has not budged since. I can't seem to exit diagnostic mode, go onto any other tests or reset it. There are no mechanical noises coming from it either. Any ideas how to get out of this and how to get my ipod working again?

The sad iPod icon is almost certainly indicative of a hard drive failure which the diagnostic test would seem to confirm.
    This iPod needs service.

  • IPod Nano stuck in "lock" mode

My iPod nano seems to be stuck in the locked position - not "locked" because I created a password for it, but it simply displays the lock symbol in the upper left corner regardless of how many times I flip the switch back to what should be "unlocked."  Because of this, I have no control over it.  When I disconnect it from my PC, the screen turns black and I cannot operate it.  Battery is fully charged.  Have tried soft reset many times, restore several times - no luck.
    Suggestions??????
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello paolamike,
Not much for options here.  You'll need to have your iPod serviced either by Apple or a third party repair company to have the hold/lock switch replaced.

  • Please help: Nano frozen (very hot when recharging...)

    Hi,
it seems my almost brand new (used 4 times...) Nano 2GB has got some problems
When I'm recharging it (by Apple USB cable plugged into USB port on my WinXP Pro PC with last version of iTunes installed), it becomes really really hot on the back and the famous folder with exclamation comes out.
    - There's no charge icon or other icons...
    - Display is not lighting
    - Nano is not turned on (battery low and not recharging)
    - I tried to restore it pressing menu/play buttons for 10 seconds, the apple icon appeared but then I cannot turn the Nano on.
Should I try something else or do I need to bring it back to the shop? What scares me more is the back getting so hot that you cannot keep nano in your hands.
    Thanks,
    Massimo

I will bring the Nano back to the shop, hope they could help

  • Ipod touch scree frozen on zoomed mode despite restore  - help please

my ipod touch screens have been frozen on zoomed mode . i did a restore thro itunes and even then it remains in a zoomed mode . screen is not responsive . any help please or is it a vist to the genius bar.

    Hello manickam,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
See this article about how to disable the Zoom feature. Keep in mind that the controls or actions to navigate with your iPod will be slightly different due to this feature being on, which would explain why you are getting no response when touching the screen.

My Ipod nano says its locked and screens on and it's staying frozen.  I have tried pressing the menu and select button simultaneously and still not reset.  What should I do?

Right click on the iPod Nano icon.  "Eject" should pop up.  At least that is the way it works on Macs.

When I went to turn it on it was in DISK MODE. How did it get set to DISK MODE?
    Thank you.

Thank you, it worked just fine. I guess Apple has replaced operating instructions for these forums! Again, thanks for the help.

  • Stuck on Lock mode

I've tried resetting it, I've held the buttons down, I've let it empty its battery (I left it alone for more than 42 hours, but there's no way for me to tell if it died), but it's still stuck on Locked mode. Not Screen Lock, though. It's really frustrating.
I've toggled the Hold switch and it appears fine other than being locked. It uploads into iTunes, which I have the newest version of, and I can update it and stuff, it just is locked and I can't get into it.
    Please help!
