Help! Nano won't restore

Just got a Nano for my daughter's 12th birthday (she had a shuffle before). Everything install just fine and we put a couple of songs on to test it.
However, the next time we connected something went wrong and iTunes would not recognize the Nano. I've been through every trouble shooting step I can find--including restore. However, when I attempt to restore I get the message "firmware update failure. Disk write error."
I've tried every suggestion I can find. I've got a broken-hearted 12-year-old right now--Any ideas out there?

hi rcringer!
just checking on what you've seen so far. have you
worked through this document?
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when
syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when
updating or restoring iPod
also, is the Dell a desktop or a laptop? (that can
have some bearing on this.)
love, b
Yeah, I've gone through everything on that.
I've got a Dell laptop.
The whole thing is strange, since everything installed so cleanly (unlike the Shuffle installation)

  • Ipod Nano won't restore to sync

My brand new Ipod Nano won't sync with my Itunes.  The Itunes software tells me to restore my Nano, The screen it tells me to restore using isn't on my Nano, but I restore to factory settings, and it still won't work.  Gives me a message in Itunes"The iPod "iPod" cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application."  What???  I just plugged it into the computer after opening it in the box from the store?

Make sure the Enable disk use option is NOT ticked from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes. If you do have to remove this tick mark, be sure to hit the Apply button in the lower left hand corner of the window in iTunes to update the changes to your device. Then try restoring it again.

  • Nano won't restore or initialize or recognize...

    hello all
just loading up my new nano when it froze, with the little exclamation point icon. seems like a common problem. however, now it won't be recognized in itunes, but the disk utility knows it's there. it won't restore without an error, and when i disconnect and reconnect, the utility wants to initialize it, which it won't do without an errror either.
    any ideas how to progress?

What else did you do? Are you trying to update with the new firmware update? Had the same problem with my friends Nano and had to return it twice to the store... good thing they accepted... with the last one what I did is I took off all the firmware update and used the one that came with the nano... it didn't tell me to plug it to the wall the first time but the last one it changed the nano's display like it was in safe mode or something and then it has that display that you have to plugg it to the power block... so after plugging it to the wall try to reset it while charging and see what happens... that last step is what I didn't try before returning the nano... hope it will work... good luck =)

  • HT1339 My nano won't restore, it says  it can't because "files are being used"  Please help me get the "chipmunk's and Beiber" off my ipod!!!

I am trying to restore my nano to get my kids' chipmunk and beiber music off and it replys that it cant because files are being used.....what do i need to do???

First and foremost, just say no to Beiber
First, close all open apps on your computer and restart your computer. Open only iTunes when it restarts.
Then, I would reset your iPod, probably not needed but I would do it  any way. Hold the sleep/wake button and the volume down button until the Apple logo appears. Wait for it to completely start  up to where it is ready to use.
Now try and restore. If the iPod was synced with your own computer to put the music on, you can use it to remove it. Usually that is preferred instead of restoring.

  • IPod nano won't restore

I recently borrowed a 1st generation nano from a friend when my 30GB video iPod spazzed out. He's on a PC and I'm on a Mac but he told me to feel free to restore it and update it, whatever, because he doesn't use it much anymore. When I first plugged it in to my Mac, it told me to erase and sync, which I tried to do, but it gave me an error. So, I tried to restore it. It downloaded the new iPod software and as soon as if finished downloading, it gave me another error (-48) saying there was a problem with my network. I'm assuming it means my interenet network, right? Well, I've been on three different networks since then, and I get the same message every time. I've seached every where and I have no idea what to do. Help?

    Hi!
Thank you for replying – I did what you suggested but unfortunately it didn’t work After several restarts I managed to get the software to pick up the iPod Nano and I selected ‘restore’ but a few moments after the progress bar appears it suddenly says “can’t mount ipod” and exits. Within My Computer the iPod appears as a ‘Removable Disk’ but I cannot access the drive or format it – though within Hardware Devices’ Windows recognises it as an iPod.
Is there any way I can flash the drive with another piece of software so that the contents are deleted, then try to restore the iPod from scratch as it doesn’t seem to be able to read the drive contents properly?
    Thanks again

  • Nano won't restore

Hi, I hope someone can help me. When switching on my Nano it asks to be connected to Itunes to be restored. Once the restore process is complete, iTunes says the iPod is corrupted and asks to restore it. I have gone through the restore process again, only for iTunes to indicate the iPod is corrupt. I have taken it to an Authorised service centre and they say it will cost $169 to fix it as Apple will just swap it for a reconditioned one. Does anyone one have any ideas?

Hi Tom, thank you for responding. I have had the same problem using 2 computers, one is an HP Compaq nx8220 laptop running Windows XP Professional Version 5.1, the other one is a LG Tablet also running XP Professional. I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes on both. The problem originally happened when I was updating the iPod on the LG, I left it charging and when I returned a few hours later the iPod didn't work. I then went through the 5 stepts as per the web site which resulted in the iPod needing to be restored. I hope this helps.
    Cheers, Tony

  • 1stGen 4GB nano - Won't restore!

When I powered it up this morning to re-charge it I'm getting a blank screen with "Use iTunes to restore" (repeated in other languages)
when I plugged it into iTunes it goes into a cycle, the warning flashes - then the apple logo - then it goes blank before cycling round again.
I found out how to get into Diagnostic setting and have found that the "HD Info" is blank apart from "Model Number: " that's it.
any help or advice most welcome!

    Hi BlueFoxLeics,
Have you tried these five iPod troubleshooting steps?
    The Five Rs
If that doesn't help, then you could try forcing your iPod into disk mode, by following the instructions in this Knowledge Base article:
    Putting iPod into disk mode
With the iPod in disk mode, try connecting it to your computer and restore it in iTunes. Our main goal here would be to try to get your iPod restored in iTunes.
Is your iPod recognized when you try connecting it to your computer, or not?
You could also try letting your iPod's battery drain down fully. Then, when it reaches the "Low battery" screen (or simply dies on battery), let it recharge through a power source (preferrably a wall charger) for about 4 hours.
Any success with your iPod if can restore it in iTunes?

Your iPhone's iOS must be same or newer than the one in backups. In your case it is older so you need to update your iPhone and then recover it with backup.

You need to do as provided. If no change after restoring as a new iPhone or not from the backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem.

  • Ipod nano won't sync podcasts from iTunes after I "Restored" the ipod.

iPod nano won't sync podcasts from iTunes after I "Restored" the iPod.

If you've read the Technical Specification you will find that the nano can only use Firewire for charging, not for syncing:
    http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html
"Charging via USB or FireWire to computer system or power adapter (sold separately)"
So you can rule that out.
